A simple cleaning up might go a long way—pick up the empty beer bottles littering the grounds, take away the broken chairs around the pool, etc. The staff are overall very competent and friendly—not overly solicitous like you might expect at a higher-star hotel, but perfectly adequate. Meals are a good price, and the dinners were quite decent. Breakfasts left a bit to be desired; it’s nice to eat outside, but as you might expect, jams and honey and Nutella attract lots and lots of flies. The Internet works better outside of the rooms than inside. Worked well in my room on my laptop, but not on my phone or tablet. Don’t expect to be able to stream audio or video. Never had a significant power issue. It flickered a few times, but they must have a generator that kicks in. Biggest disappointment was the gym. This is a pretty well-appointed gym for an African hotel, but on my third day of using it, I was politely informed that it is actually separate from the hotel, and requires a monthly subscription (about $50, if I recall correctly). I wish I’d been informed about this earlier, as it’s a significant extra expense. The surrounding area isn’t much to speak of. I couldn’t find any decent restaurants in walking distance. You can walk to the National Museum and big downtown market, though."
