We weren't sure what to expect, as this was our first time to Mozambique, and we had initially planned to visit the Quirimbas rather than Bazaruto (we ended up deciding to save the north for our next visit and focus on Vilankulos/Bazaruto, Inhambane/Tofo, and Maputo during this trip). The Anantara was better than expected. Everything was well arranged--before our trip, they were in touch with us and arranged the (free) shuttle/boat transportation from the airport in Vilankulos to the island. When we arrived at the resort, we were greeted by a troupe of (very touristy, but nonetheless appreciated) local dancers along with the GM. We were then taken to our rooms in little golf carts, where we had a chance to relax and enjoy our beautiful room deck with pool and sunbathing area. There were three separate restaurants at the resort, with different meals available at each one--we loved the different food themed nights and found the food to be excellent (and on a side note, per discussion with the head chef, all the non-pork meat items were verified halal). We did two amazing tours, the sand dune surfing (led by Claudio, who was phenomenal) and snorkeling (by Ernesto and ?Fernando, who were also wonderful) where we got to visit Pansy Island and had a dugong swim right up to our boat. Overall, a life changing trip and I can't recommend the Anantara highly enough! Thanks!"

I found the 4x4 trip to the resort more heartbreaking than bone-jarring. The indigant people live off very little. I was wondering if a boat transfer from Pemba would be possible? The accommodation in the suite was lovely, very comfortable and spacious. With two air conditioners and ceiling fans, you are well protected from the sweltering heat and humidity in your chosen accommodation. The food was generous as all buffets tend to be. It did tend to be repetitive though, even lunch and dinner. I’m not sure I would recommend it as a place to get some R&R. That would depend on how busy the resort is I guess, but you mostly run into other guests at meal times and at the beach. The spa is lovely and well worth a visit for a treatment. Overall, a very pleasant stay and introduction to Mocambique "

However, you should note that the hotel is 8km from town. I was happy to run/walk along deserted beaches most days to get to town/kite surfing. I then took a ride back. If you are taking rides both ways -- which are charged at around US$20 -- you will run up a substantial transport bill. You have to travel in a 4*4 as the last 3km are unpaved/sand. You can do this cheaper on the back of a motorbike but everyone says it is seriously dangerous.| I also had a small issue with the Internet connection having to be renewed each day. Nonetheless, it is a great location if you want peace. Walking north from the hotel is even quieter and more beautiful than going south. Final tip: I took some 'barefoot' running shoes and they were great on the beach. Take up almost no room in your bag but provide enough protection for running and against razor clams when in the sea -- these are fairly common and can give a bare foot a bad cut when dragged across one.
