We had no idea to expect that we'd drive a rough cobblestone road up the mountain to stay the night in a fairy tale castle, complete with a tower and a truly BREATHTAKING view of the countryside from our tall French windows which opened up to admit a fragrant breeze. Truthfully, we chose the hotel only because it was close to Chavaniac-Lafayette, and we didn't expect much. But even if our expectations had been higher, I think this place would have exceeded them. A beautiful chandelier hung from a tall ceiling over our bed. And everything was old world charm but the rooms had modern amenities. TV, coffee maker, a beautiful bathroom with a heated floor. And a picturesque (and very reasonably priced) restaurant on the premises. There's also a truly delicious rustic breakfast. One can't expect multi-lingual staff at a place like this in remote Auvergne but the language barrier presented some comical problems for us driving in from Lyon to a place that has no street address, while trying to use GPS. We quite nearly got lost a few times. Thank goodness for the signs on the country roads pointing the way. We wanted to know more about the history of the place, but there was virtually nothing to be learned online and unfortunately even the staff members who knew English couldn't tell us much. Would go again in a heartbeat."

Very comfortable bed though traditional bolster with huge pillow and bed covers could be replaced. - "Quite good" - "The bathroom was minute but functional - luckily neither of us is overweight, or we may have had difficulties! The food in the restaurant was very good from starter to coffee. In a four-course menu, so often the main course will be excellent and the dessert hopeless, or vice versa. But here the whole meal was excellent from start to finish, and the pichet of wine was of a high quality too. The hotel has been thoroughly revamped and is presented in a modern way - it is no longer a "Logis de France"and is very well maintained. We did not dine here as we had already eaten, but did have a couple of beers. Our twin bedded room was very clean and comfortable and had satellite TV. The new owners are bikers too and there are plaques and magazines to reflect this. Also, there was no free parking even though the hotel listed this as an included item; we had to park on the street. The hotel manager was very rude to us and quite upset my wife. Even though I speak french and tried to explain what our hotels.com reservation said, the owner persisted to be rude and told us he didn't care. He said it was his hotel and he could do what he wanted. We love France and have never been treated this way by any hotelier in all our years of traveling through France. I could say more, but I will leave it at this: BE WARNED. THIS IS A HOTEL TO AVOID."
