- "This is a hotel of faded Highland splendour - but we are quite happy in such hotels. The staff are good and try to help and the room was quiet and comfortable. The shame is that the food caters to the lowest common denominator - coach parties. The choice for dinner was remarkably small and the food was average. The breakfast was not hot and the food in heated containers should have been replenished. The bacon was a welded mat of rashers - inedible. The hotel served our purpose but needs attention."

- "The comfort and peace surpassed my expectations, and this was great value. I was looking for something straightforward when I came to Kingussie to visit my daughter, and didn't expect this to be so pleasant. The room was large and comfortable and clean. There were no staff on site, but everything had been prepared and left ready for a comfortable stay. Entry was easy, with the PIN-code key locker. Breakfast was basic but perfectly adequate, and the coffee machine was great. There was plenty of room downstairs to eat and rest. For the price I paid, I would say this was about the best hotel experience I've had. Thank you!"

Over 130 years of Highland hospitality
We are very proud of our ongoing evolution and its enduring role as a central part of the Kingussie community.
The Star Hotel in Kingussie, has a rich history closely tied to the local community. First opening the doors in 1892 and continuing to be a staple of hospitality in the region ever since. The hotel has undergone various changes and management over the years, reflecting the evolving needs of its guests. In the 1930s, the Star Hotel was managed by a local family, who were well-known in the area. Noted for their service and the car they ran, which became a recognisable symbol of the hotel during that era.
Today, the Star Hotel offers modern amenities while retaining its historic charm. Featuring 21 bedrooms situated conveniently for those looking to explore nearby. Despite changes over the years, the hotel continues to serve as a central hub for not only visitors to Kingussie but also the locals.
Maintaining its reputation for warm Scottish hospitality!
Why “Jacobite” & “Wolf”?
The White Rose stands as one of the most enduring symbols of the Jacobite cause, representing unwavering loyalty to the House of Stuart. In the 18th century, it was worn proudly by those who supported Prince Charles Edward Stuart—better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie—in his 1745 attempt to reclaim the throne lost by his grandfather, King James VII of Scotland and II of England, in 1688. His supporters, known as Jacobites (from the Latin “Jacobus” for James), rallied from across the Highlands, Lowlands, and even from France and Ireland. Despite their defeat at the Battle of Culloden, the Jacobite legacy lives on through memorials and stories, marking one of the most pivotal chapters in Scotland’s history.
Kingussie, located in the heart of the Highlands, played a part in these historical events, inspiring the owners to name the Jacobite Bar & Grill after this rich heritage. Nearby, the ruins of a castle once belonging to Alexander Stewart, the infamous Wolf of Badenoch, remind us of the area’s medieval past. Stewart’s barracks were burnt by Jacobites in 1746, and today, the Wolf Sports Bar honours this fierce history with its name.
Kingussie continues to reflect its heritage with its elegant stone villas and grand hotels, including the Star Hotel, built in 1892 and now beautifully refurbished. Just beyond the village, visitors can explore Scotland’s history at the Highland Folk Museum or experience wildlife at the Highland Wildlife Park, both offering a glimpse into Scotland’s unique landscape and culture.

Wolf Sports Bar
The name of this area was due to the historical events, dated back to 1394!
Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan was the infamous Wolf of Badenoch the third son of King Robert II of Scotland. Earlier this year a team in Kingussie have harboured the dream of erecting Badenoch’s own memorial to Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan.
