The cabin had comfortable beds (enough for 8 and extra if needed) in two bedrooms with a wood fire and firewood provided. The kitchen had everything you need to cook your own meals. The cabin is very secluded, warm and clean. There is no TV or Wifi, which was another positive for us. The nature reserve is beautiful and there are walking trails nearby that can be done with a young family. The environment is the main focus of the site and every effort has been made by the owners to ensure that visitors are doing their bit. Pademelons and possums come visiting our porch. The owner is friendly and knowledgeable and we had a great experience. We hired a Hyundai I20 and had no issues getting up hills but you just have to take care getting there. The Huon Valley and Ranelagh is a beautiful place and nothing is too far away, especially if it's nature that you want to see. We thoroughly recommend a stay at this very special place."

No-one actually knows when it was built, or by whom. It used to be surrounded by an orchard of Democrat apples on three sides, from back in the day when there were apple orchards all the way back to Huonville. It was often the person whose job it was to pick that orchard, who lived there.

It is now a fully-renovated one-bedroom cottage sitting in the heart of Valleyfield farm. We named it “Tiny’s” after the local nickname of the much-loved, diminutive (and likely longest-tenured) tenant.

It was nearly falling down already, in places. Joists were rotting. Weatherboards were back to bare timber and unpainted for over 20 years. A tacked-on bathroom with a too-low ceiling and off-kilter floor gave the most recent ‘wing’ of the place a “crazy-house” feel.

We considered tearing it down, but we’re so glad we didn’t. It’s been a struggle, but we’re thrilled to have preserved this link to the past.

Locally, this little house has been known as “Miss Havisham’s” (referencing the neglected abode of the Great Expectations character), “the Mustard Pot” (it was once that crazy colour), and most recently, simply “the hovel”, as it decayed under decades of neglect.

Valleyfield has seen six generations of the same family since it was established in the 1860s by pioneers living on the southern alluvial flats of the mighty Huon River, before there was even a bridge connecting them to the north.

The Melukurdee people used to take a trail through what is now Valleyfield, over Lane’s Hill at the top of the farm, to Franklin. This relatively short walk gave them access to different food sources at opposite ends of the journey, as the river snakes around those hills and changes from freshwater to tidal, salty waters along the way. Our family’s history includes stories of the Melukurdee people stopping by the houses to ask for pins, which they would fashion into fishing hooks.

We’re proud of the farm’s heritage. We’re not proud of the fact that this is stolen land.

A beautiful, old Aga oven is the kitchen centrepiece - but that's just for decoration! The electric oven is much for efficient.

In this large open plan space is the huge dining table, suitable for sitting 8 guests. The large table is perfect for platters and entertaining. There is also direct access to the outside deck where the Weber Q BBQ lives.

The master bedroom houses the ensuite with a toilet, vanity, and shower. The communal bathroom has a large shower, bathtub, toilet, and twin vanities. In the room opposite is the laundry room, with the washing machine and separate dryer. There is also plenty of space for hanging out laundry outside on the veranda and garden.

Our award winning gardens are a utopia of Tasmanian flora and fauna - you may be lucky enough to glimpse the resident platypus in the pond, or spy the marsupials and their joeys during dusk. Discover the babbling brook at the bottom of the property amongst the blackberry bushes; explore the hidden patches of blossom amidst the towering poplar trees; admire the herd of alpacas in the adjacent field, who may be hungry for a handful of hay over the fence. There is so much magic to see and admire in this stunning site.

Take a fresh morning walk up the hill for an expansive 270-degree view across the valley, or head down to the dam with a glass of wine and light the fire pit. If you love animals, you can pull an apple from a tree and feed the cows or try to cuddle a lamb (If you can catch one).

Guests also have access to full laundry facilities and an outdoor playground for younger visitors.

While the cabin was designed for two, it can sleep up to four adults using the double bed in the loft. Access to the loft is via a ladder, which may not be suitable for very small children or guests with mobility concerns.

Equally as peaceful and picturesque you will feel a million miles from any where whilst in reality being only 30 mins from Hobart and only 10mins to the village of Huonville. The Huon valley is a beacon of natural produce where the apples have become cider, and fine wine pours from its vineyards, and fresh produce can be easily found at roadside stalls and valley eateries. Add to the mix the Huon Valley’s natural assets and you have a compelling combination – the peaks of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area run along the valley’s western edge, while the namesake Huon River winds gently through before pouring into the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. On your way from Hobart you must call into Willie Smith's Apple Shed and grab some locally made apple cider to enjoy by the inside wood heater or down at the outdoor fire pit. Pulling up to the house under cover parking is provided. Then walk down the steps around to the front door. Upon entering the house you will be greeted by the lovely pink blush of the first living area which then opens to the dining area and kitchen. The kitchen is the perfect hub for preparing food with modern appliances and a walk in pantry. Off the second living is the main living area complete with the woodheater and the most plush lounge where you can sit back and take in the view of the surrounding hills, watch TV or just be mesmorised by the flickering flames of the fire. Through the lounge is the master suite with king size bed and private ensuite and walk in robe. At the other end of the house you will find three bedrooms each with a queensize bed. The main bathroom is also located at this end of the house. The bath is deep and inviting and the bath salts are just devine. Seperate laundry facilities are available including a seperate washer and dryer. The outdoor dining table is perfect for enjoying meal in the freshest air your will ever breathe whilst having your breath taken away my the changing hues of the surrounding hills, valleys and mountains. Go as far south as you can get on the walk to South Cape Bay, where the Southern Ocean thunders ashore and Australia’s southernmost point – South East Cape – is almost in reach. The walk (4hr return, 15.4km) forms the eastern end of the week-long South Coast Track. Scale one of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area’s most accessible mountains on the walk (3-5hr return, 7.4km) to the summit of Hartz Peak, or head to different heights on Tahune Airwalk. The centre, which sits on the bank of the Huon River in Franklin, is the only school in Australia teaching traditional wooden-boat construction.
