Salt Box Hideaway
Cabin
Strahan

Designed with comfort and ultimate rest and relaxation in mind, Salt Box Hideaway features soothing rich naval tones and a grand Tasmanian Blue Gum custom-made built-in bed. Sit by the cedar window and watch the rolling mist cover the hills as night falls, or rise early and embrace the tranquillity on the water's edge. We love to spoil our guests with complimentary port for you to sip under the stars.
This is a rustic part of the world and an important part of Tasmania's history.

The space
Our little hideaway is in a very special part of the world, designed for travellers seeking absolute relaxation and indulgence. This cabin is located on the edge of the Historically Listed Lettes Bay, right at the water's edge.

Strahan has amazing sunsets and magnificent skies at night; right under the Milky Way.

We have a little table and chairs for two hanging on the side of the shack so you can dine under the stars by the water's edge. Alternatively, on cooler nights you'll find an LCD TV should you wish to cosy up under the blankets and watch a movie.

PLEASE NOTE:
****The bed has been built into the wall to maximise space for guests. It is also a little higher than most beds to allow guests to enjoy the view without leaving their bed on wintry mornings. This will not suit older people with mobility issues as one side of the bed is built in against the wall. However, we do offer a small step ladder tucked in the kitchen cupboard next to the stove to put at the end of the bed if you need it.

****Also, please note, the shack is one of about 20 shacks in the little hamlet called Lettes Bay however there are only about 8 with absolute water frontage. One of them is our little hideaway. Not all of the shacks have been renovated and they are heritage listed so we aren't able to change much externally. Please search for the salt box online to read the history of the bay and how the shacks came to be.

****The shack is too far away from the car park to charge electric vehicles. This will have to be done in Strahan, at the NRMA hotel.

Guest access
Once booked in, you'll be emailed a one-off entry key code within 72 hours of your arrival. This code is used to access the smart lock on the front door. Alternatively, there is a manual lockbox next to the main entry of your Hideaway.

Other things to note
Salt Box Hideaway is tucked away in Lettes Bay, however still only ten minutes drive to all Strahan's main restaurants, hotels, coffee and supermarket. All experiences such as the West Coast Wilderness Railway, Strahan Helicopter rides and Gordon River Cruises are also only a hop skip and a jump away. (we suggest taking the family-owned red boat cruise)

We have some fantastic options to eat out including Risby Cove A La Carte Restaurant and Art Gallery and Hamer's Bar and Bistro. which offers locally caught fish and seafood and 42 degrees which has a seafood buffet for $59 in the summer months and the most magnificent sunset views over Strahan from high on the hill.

For the best coffee, customer service and homemade delights, head to the "Coffee Shack" on The Esplanade!

Tasmania's Most Iconic Stay — Captain's Rest
Cabin
Strahan

There are stays that fill time and stays that change time—Captain's Rest belongs firmly in the second category.

This historic fisherman's cabin in Lettes Bay Shack Village sits meters from Macquarie Harbour, framed by climbing roses and wisteria. Here, time moves to the rhythm of tides while dolphin pods surface just beyond windows designed for watching the world unfold at its own perfect pace.

The space
Nestled on Tasmania's remote west coast, Captain's Rest is a storied waterfront cottage where the essence of the heart of Tasmania whispers through weathered wood and the gentle rhythm of water lapping at the jetty. Through enormous antique windows restored with intention, morning light dances on still waters while little birds provide the only soundtrack needed.

Warmth here operates on multiple levels. The Nectre wood-burning stove anchors the space with endless comfort, transforming even Tasmania's deepest winter into cozy sanctuary. Unlimited local firewood ensures this ancient pleasure never diminishes, while modern heating and cooling systems provide seamless backup climate control.

Comfort is layered. The deep soaking bath, positioned to capture optimal jetty views, transforms daily rituals into restoration alchemy while unlimited hot water ensures complete surrender to the experience. A seasonally curated library adapts to different moods and moments, while Starlink connectivity serves those balancing remote work with retreat.

The compact but thoughtfully equipped kitchen provides everything needed to recreate cherished family recipes or experiment with Tasmania's incredible selection of produce.

Named Australia's Most Special Stay by Escape Magazine and featured in British Vogue, Condé Nast Traveler, Living Etc UK, and Milk Decoration France, Captain's Rest offers more than accommodation—it provides a true journey.

Created by an internationally renowned designer, this retreat serves those who seek depth over grandeur, solitude over spectacle. Whether guests come to write, to rest, or simply to breathe, they leave gently transformed.

This cottage has sheltered countless stories across generations and stands ready to shelter yours.

Guest access
Captains Rest is all yours, and the space around it is shared by fellow shack owners. Usually, the area around the cabin is quiet, and sometimes it's a hive of fishing, photography, boat building and community.

We are proudly an inclusive stay and all guests of any background or community are welcome here in this safe space.

Other things to note
Please kindly note, that Captains Rest is not suitable for children or pets due to the delicate nature of its furnishings, and the hazards of the water and aging jetties out front. We also only have a step-in bath — so this listing might not suit those who prefer to shower or have mobility issues.

We stock a basic pantry that includes: Ground Coffee Beans, Milk, Black and Herbal Teas, Salt, Pepper & Olive Oil with plunger or drip coffee-making options.

For any location shoots or events such as elopements, kindly touch base with our team to discuss your plans and we will arrange a beautiful package, tailored to you.
