Bathroom needs refurbishing. " - "This masseria has beautiful grounds, with plants and green everywhere. The swimming pool area is beautiful and spacious. The pool is large and ideal for kids, as half of it is less than 1metre deep. Plenty of chairs in the sun or shaded area. You can order food by the pool and the menu is very reasonably priced. My daughter had a very good burger for €6 (I think). The restaurant is quite good and very well served with large portions, this was the case for the meat and the fritura fruto di mari mista. The breakfast is plenty with cold cut meats, excellent bread, several cakes, cooked egg, fruits, yoghurt, cappuccino and much more. The staff at the breakfast and dinner are very kind and helpful. The only negative is that the check-in is cold and formal, which is unlike to many places we’ve stayed at. The room is basic but large with a king bed. My 6 year-old daughter slept with us and there was no extra charge, which was great. The WiFi in the room didn’t work well, but it worked well in the swimming pool. I would definitely come back!"

We chose Turosport as it was cheap but didn't realise at the time of booking it was a self-catering apartment, we did not find this out until we had read several reviews on various sites. This turned out to be a benefit as we could eat when we liked, especially early in the morning. The one room apartment was small and a bit dated in style but perfectly functional and clean with cooking utensils provided. A quick visit to the local supermarket soon provided all we needed. The walls of our apartment were paper thin and our amorous neighbours managed to wake us up with their nocturnal activities; Pack ear plugs. We ate in the hotel one evening and thoroughly enjoyed the set menu, plenty of it, cheapish and tasty. The bar is reasonably priced and; as the hotel has free internet access in the public areas we could enjoy a drink and do our e-mails in comfort. We did not get chance to utilise the indoor pool or any of the sports facilities but they were provided and, if you do not fancy the pool, then the beach is only a five minute walk from the rear gate of the complex. The closest beach has an unbroken view of 'industrial Taranto' but it seems to suit the locals and they are quite happy to swim there. The hotel was a bit remote for our needs as most of our business was in mid Puglia and required us to negotiate the Taranto rush-hour on a daily basis. The roads to and from the hotel are reasonable; a bit pot-holed but no worse than in UK. By the end of five days I was driving like a native. In summary; this hotel filled our needs of a place to sleep, eat and do our necessary correspondence. Had we been looking for a resort type holiday we would have been disappointed. I don't think it would suit young childeren. that said you are never far from open countryside, a beach or historic towns."

- "Great place" - "Very nice boutique hotel with a wonderful and helpful staff!" - "Angelo and his team couldn't have done any more for us. The room we booked was not described as a seaview room, but i emailed as it was a birthday weekend stay and we had a reply confirming we were in a seaview room. The room was spacious and exceptionally clean with a mini bar, stocked with water (and restocked daily) and pop on arrival. The bed was amazingly comfortable with sufficient pillows and nice bedspread. The seaview was of the fisherman boats looking into the little sea where you could see the mussels being cultivated. The toiletries were of good standard, as to were the coffee and tea facilites, a lavazza coffee maker and a kettle if you were a tea drinker. The atmosphere of the hotel was lovely, and the interior design was nicely thought out, not too cluttered but also not too sparce. The old area itself is going through a lot of rejuvenation which needs a lot of money injected into it to make it ultra special but Palazzo Mata is truly a diamond in the rough. Taranto itself was interesting. Initially we were not going to stay but after a trip to one of the nicest beaches we have ever been too, including the maldives, and a tuk tuk tour, both arranged by the lovely people at the hotel, we are so glad we did. The trip was the highlight of our 2 week tour of italy and we will definitely be back. All the team at palazzo mata (family run) should be proud on what they have achieved and definitely made us welcomed from the food, the icecream birthday "cake" & other"

- "We were the only British there and all other guests seemed to be Italian which was fine by us....it is Italy after all but it may not suit everyone. We travelled around Puglia and Basilicata and this was the place where English was least spoken and so our bit of Italian learned before travelling came in very handy. Be warned, I was told a particular meat was chicken and it tasted like chicken but my husband later discovered it was rabbit which I don't eat!! The room was tiny but we only slept there and were only there for 3 nights and so it was suitable. It was super clean but needs a little update. We had a card to slot in to start the electrics, similar to most hotels now, but we had to practically ram this in. We couldn't work the safe as we couldn't find the hidden button and didn't really want to ask but I am sure if we had done, we would have been shown. The balcony was small but we had a lovely sea view but only one chair and a few very old and broken pegs. The shower was small. I am small and struggled and I so I'm not sure how someone larger would manage. No tea and coffee facilities which I may have expected from a hotel. We only used the beach one morning but still had to pay 30 Euros resort fee (for use of the beach and loungers). You don't get towels and so take your own and you actually get a numbered lounger but they didn't tell us this until after we'd been sunbathing on one a few feet away for an hour!! The restaurant staff are the jewel here"

- "The hotel was very classy and clean. It was walking distance to manduria Town with nice places to eat nearby at very reasonable prices. Nicole and Sara were incredibly kind and couldn't do enough to help us with info on places to visit and otherwise. We would return here just because of the wonderful customer service received from them and the lovely hotel of course. Our family room was spacious and had an excellent jetted double shower which our 6 year old couldn't get enough of. We were lucky that we only had a child with because the room was tiny. We complained and all rooms are apparently the same size. I think images are only of exclusive bridal suites. V quiet when I was there so only one member of staff on reception/ breakfast but that was fine. The reception staff helped organise taxis, gave tourist advice and printed my boarding passes. Would urge caution if you are driving here, v narrow streets and sharp corners to get to hotel. The staff could not have been nicer and the location in town is excellent."

It felt a little unloved, with old fashioned furniture and some shabby fittings. My single, spring-frame bed and soft mattress felt like the one i used to have in the 1960s!! Finally, not sure why but for first 24 hours i had only cold water. Then just after returning from a day out it miraculously started running hot, as if someone had just remembered to put money in the gas meter. I probably was just unlucky and certainly would not advise against this hotel as a pleasant convenient base for a Taranto visit. "
