The original cabin was built circa 1930, and remains true to this day to it's beginnings; however some years later the kitchen, bath and bedroom were added to offer more space and the modern conveniences. The log walls in the living room are chinked with real buffalo hide and all the décor pays homage to the history and settling of the area. We have displayed a collection of Indian related items and artwork, as well as memorabilia of the old west, homesteading, hunting and trapping...all of which were a part of Black Hills history. The cabin sits on several acres, sharing a border with Forest Service, and only about 1500 ft. from the entrance to Custer State Park, one of the largest state parks in the USA.
The large living room's focal point is a beautiful, native rock arched fireplace with a gas log to take the chill off on cool evenings as well as contribute to the cozy ambiance. There is a full-size sofa bed. With the queen bed and double bed in the bedroom, there is room for up to six people to stay. There is a large, flat screen TV also in the living room, and access to internet. We do have a washer and dryer available for longer-stay guests. The charming country kitchen has a wonderful, huge window above the sink, affording a lovely view. And, the kitchen is equipped with full-size appliances, microwave, coffeemaker, toaster, dishes, pots and pans. We also stock basic staples such as coffee, sugar, salt and pepper, and also condiments like ketchup and mustard. We are actually licensed as a B&B, but instead of preparing a meal for you at a set time and place, we simply provide you with some fresh foods in the fridge, fresh fruits, cereals and most often something freshly baked. The well water here is so good you will not want bottled water, and has been tested periodically for safety. We have bicycles for your use, with a hiking, bicycle paved trail adjacent which goes to Custer. In Custer, this paved trail joins the Mickelson Trail, which is a rails-to-trails pathway which transverses the entire Black Hills south to north, with many trail heads to access sections.
If you like wildlife watching, just sit outside (or simply look out any window in the cabin) in the morning or maybe at sunset and don't be surprised if you see deer or turkey watching you. We will keep a supply of feed available to give them a treat, but be warned that if you do, they will be back!
As owners, we take pride in keeping the cabin up to your expectations. We do our own cleaning, and do not charge a cleaning fee. We are the new owners and our goal will be to do all we can to ensure your visit here is pleasant.
NEWS BULLETIN: We have just finished building another cabin on the Stockade Lake Cabin property. This will enable a larger family or group of friends to book both cabins and have more space and bathrooms! Or, for just two or three guests who don't need the space of the big cabin and want to save money, as "Hunter's Cabin" will be available at a much lower rate. The vrbo listing number for Hunter's Cabin is 1349230, so please check it out. The new cabin is a rustic type, one room concept with full bath and kitchen, and covered porch. I have included some pics of Hunter’s cabin on this site, so you can see what is available if you are needing two cabins on same location
- "This cabin is the perfect location for visiting Custer, SD and surrounding area. Roberta was a terrific hostess, complete with fresh fruit and blueberry muffins upon our arrival. Although we never needed anything, no doubt she would have been very accessible and responsive to any needs. An added bonus was seeing deer in the yard each morning and evening." - "Convenient location to the sights. Private location and interesting historical decor adds to the experience of the Black Hills. Lots of amenities that make you feel like it's your home too."

We have added Hunter's Cabin on the same property as Stockade Lake Cabin (VRBO #760445) is located. This makes the perfect addition to our already popular cabin when you are traveling with friends or family who need their own separate space and yet want to be near to share meals and good times. Perfect in every way.....Hunter's cabin is perfect size; large enough for two adults, yet smaller than the big cabin, and minus the tv, thus less costly to rent. Logistically to have more than two guests is difficult, unless a small child. With 480 square feet, it has plenty of room to spread out and enjoy, yet cozy for two. Perfect rustic luxury; new queen bed for a good night's sleep, full bath and kitchen, dining area with large windows to enjoy the views, cozy living area with a freestanding fireplace for those chilly evenings or rainy days which can occur at any time, and yet has electric heat to keep an even temperature of your choice. Perfect outdoor spaces; A covered porch across the front of cabin so you can sit out in all weather and enjoy watching deer and sometimes wild turkeys and even see Stockade Lake across the highway. There is an open patio area on other side off the kitchen with outdoor BBQ and seating area. And we have built a fire pit for your use with firewood, hot dog forks and cooking grate furnished. Hunter's cabin is brand new, but built to look like it has been here for a long time, and is nestled in among old-growth ponderosa pines which have been here likely 100 years or more. Perfect nest to return to after a day of fishing in lake, walking or biking on the bicycle path, also just across the road, or a sightseeing drive through Custer State Park with the entrance about 1500 ft up the road. Perfect headquarters for all your day trips through the hills to enjoy the endless points of interest, and only about a 20 minute drive to Mt. Rushmore. Perfect for those who truly want to bring a pet with them as they travel, as we allow one large dog or two small to medium sized pets. There is a modest pet fee charged at the time of booking.
- "We were blown away by our experience at Hunter's Cabin! The pictures don't do this cute little place justice. It was like having a home away from home. From the fresh fruit and delicious muffins Roberta left for us, to the offered use of kayaks, bikes, firewood and grill, we had everything we needed and more! We wish we would have stayed longer! Our biggest disappointment was we were so busy touring the Black Hills we didn't have the time and energy to kayak Stockade Lake, which was such a beautiful place. We enjoyed the resident bunny, doe and twin fawns. We loved listening to the coyotes and owls as we sat by the fire. We enjoyed the comfy recliner and the table for playing games when we were tired. We found the fully stocked kitchen perfect for making meals. If we needed it, we found it there! If we come back to the Black Hills, we will be sure to come back to Hunter's Cabin! We are on a long trip and pretty sure no other accomodation will top this one!"

The Laughin Place allows you to spend less of your precious family and vacation time driving and spend more of that precious time doing the things that matter. Right in the middle of it all, with easy access to highways and attractions, The Laughin' Place is a mile high, and is nearly surrounded by both the fabulous Custer State Park and the spectacular Black Hills National Forest. Both offer you easy access to hundreds and hundreds of acres of hiking, animal sighting, and exploring. So close to everything, yet so private.
Our cabin is a tri level home, very easy and comfortable. Much of it is finished in knotty pine, with a soaring slate chimney. The kitchen is updated with hickory cabinets, side by side refrigerator and glass top range. We have all the conveniences you'd expect at home. The loft looks out over the living room below, and features a door leading to its own private outdoor deck. The lower level features an impressive slate wall, a second kitchen, and walks out on to our lush yard.
Bathrooms remodeled and refreshed in 2021. Walk in showers in both bathrooms now, a nice update.
The main floor master bedroom has a king size TempurPedic bed. The loft has two twin beds and also a day bed with a trundle if you need it. The lower bedroom has a queen size bed and also a futon if desired. The lower level den has a full size pull out sofa.
Our expansive decks allow a person or two to relax with a quiet cup of coffee in the morning sun. Later on, you can watch the evening shadows fall, reliving your day with friends and family around the propane fire table.
The Laughin' Place is ideally located for your Black Hills vacation plans. Custer State Park is literally a stone's throw. Custer City is quick trip by car or an easy bike ride, coming and going. Outdoor fun abounds in every direction. Biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking, running and exploring.

- "We had an amazing vacation. This property was perfect for our 3 generations. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us!" - "Our family loved it here. This place is so perfect as it is super secluded (literally surrounded by nature) yet so close to town. We saw so many deer on the property and the kids loved exploring the rocks. The actual house was so much nicer than the pictures give credit. My three boys stayed in the loft and there was so much room. We barely even used the lower level. The location of the property was super central to all the things we wanted to do.. explore the national parks, ATV, Mount Rushmore, boating Pactola. Custer was our favorite town. It’s less touristy and had some great shops and restaurants. Beggin Burro, Custer Beacon and Baker’s Bakery were our favorite . Horatio’s Ice Cream parlor is also delicious. The owner was super responsive, checked in with us and gave some recommendations."

Secluded and comfortable three bedroom home located on the famous French Creek known as the "Jewel of the Black Hills". The house is vintage 1970's architecture and filled with character. There is an outdoor shower, as well as an outdoor cooktop and grill and a firepit. Fish for trout in French Creek without leaving the property, or head out for a hike in any direction. Children welcome, no smoking, no pets.
- "Such a beautiful quiet peaceful place to unwind and enjoy the days end after hiking and exploring! Multiple deer, 2 sets of fawns that would play in the yard, 2 bucks, and 7 wild Turkey including 2 babies! Having a creek in the back yard was the cherry on top! Home was inviting and well stocked, beds were comfortable. Todd & Michelle were always so quick to respond, and super host!!!" - "The proprerty was scenic and beautiful both inside and outside. The outdoor kitchen was well complimented and frequently taken advantage of. The property owners were personable and met us when we arrived. They were reachable/responsive to a minor issue during our stay. Overall, this was an excellent solution to staying within Custer State Park."

- "This property was perfect and everything was seamless!" - "The property was great- lots of room for us but we did have to move knickknacks to have a place to put our stuff. Everything was clean and ready to go when we got there except the refrigerator- found a plate of food covered in foil in there and needed to wipe down shelves before loaded our food. The owners were helpful with things to do in Custer and kept us informed about what was happening in town. It was a little weird when they came over the day before we left to mow the yard and packages were delivered for them while we were there. I was concerned about the master bedroom bed- the footboard was a little big and awkward to get around especially in the dark. And if you ever repaint the upstairs bathroom, can you move the mirror down a little- I know I am short but not that short and all I could see in the mirror was the top of my head. (and it was good that I was short or I would have hit my head on the TV in the master bedroom every time I got out of bed). All in all, we love Custer and would stay here again!"

- "Where to start?! We had the best stay in the Black Hills at this property. If you are looking to spend time with family away from the hustle and bustle of life while still having conveniences of home, look no further! It was brand new & clean with a fully stocked kitchen, laundry, plenty of towels, and best of all— 5 beautiful horses roaming the pasture in the backyard for a large part of the day. We stayed with our 4 kids ages 3-8, and we spent hours watching the horses and petting them when they came to see us at the fence. The property owner was immediately responsive to any questions we had! Location was secluded and SO QUIET (besides the sounds of elk bugling in the night and early morning!), yet still convenient to get to Custer, Custer state park, Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave, etc. If we find ourselves back in the Black Hills, we will definitely be back!"
