Guest Reviews:

- "The property could not have been better - every little thing has been thought of (especially impressed with the kitchen equipment and decent-sized pans), it is spacious and extremely comfortable and decorated beautifully - the photos really don't do it justice! Myself and my husband came with our 2 adult children and we each had our own double bedroom and plenty of space to hang out (the board games were great for a rainy day, we hadn't played Cluedo for years!) It is the perfect base to explore the area and there is lots to see. We particularly enjoyed the red kite feeding station at Castle Douglas and the nature reserve at Threave. Also found lots of little walks nearby and there are lots of interesting local shops and galleries. The only downside was that we couldn't stay longer! Absolutely A1 holiday experience - thank you! (and the welcome shortbread were delicious!) :D"

- "Beautiful cosy lodge in beautiful surroundings. Bengairn Lodge was immaculate inside with everything we needed for a fantastic week stay." - "We had a lovely stay in this lodge. The location is excellent being quite near to two small towns but with a very rural feel. The lodge itself is beautifully appointed, and after a day or two it became an OCD challenge to spot something the hosts had overlooked. I failed - I nearly thought I'd triumphed looking for a knife sharpening steel, but they'd provided one of those v-shaped thingies you pull the knife through. Every mod con the lodge was of good quality, including an air-fryer; (something I know nothing about). The cleanliness was top notch, and attention to things like recycling and eco-friendly supplies very well thought through.Wifi was blistering quick, which might not be everyone's concern on holiday, but its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.We are still gabbling on about how lovely the trip was, and planning a return - I think the place would feel really cosy in the winter when the weather is less kind (we had the best week of weather this time)."

Guest Reviews:

- "One of the best holidays we've had. Dunrod Lodge exceeded our expectation! Lovely large open plan living, big panoramic lounge windows giving beautiful views of Brighouse Bay and the wild-life we saw was a huge treat, deer and calves, birds of prey and bats We loved choosing our bedrooms and everyone agreed the beds were comfortable and the plumbing worked tremendously well (10 showers per day) However having to boil the water before we drank it was quite a pain, we wondered why we needed too? Dunrod lodge kitchen had everything and more we could possibly need and all to a good quality standard Our party covered a large age range (86 down to 17) and the location covered everything we hoped for, lovely bike rides locally and Galloway Forest, scenic car journeys to Carrick for the local ice-cream, sea fishing from the bay, exploring the path ways with our dogs and visiting Kirkcudbright Bag pipes night in the town was a delightful highlight All our party genuinely enjoyed our stay at Dunrod Lodge and there's even whispers about 'returning'! Just one other query - why is there so many flies located at the main garden gate? it was quite a trial getting in and out of the car with so many buzzing around ! However, a huge thank you Nigel for a most happy holiday in the delightful (and now much loved) Dunrod lodge"

Beautifully located on the river, the town also boasts a working harbour used by the local fishing fleet and a marina. Charming 200 year old Galloway cottage near Kirkcudbright
House
Twynholm, Scotland, United Kingdom

A very pretty stone-built cottage full of charm and character, Ivy Cottage dates back to the early19th century. Deceptively spacious, it nestles in a side lane in the attractive old village of Twynholm in the heart of Galloway. Only 3 miles from the harbour town of Kirkcudbright, 5 miles from Gatehouse of Fleet, and 8 miles from Castle Douglas, it is an ideal base for exploring this lovely part of Scotland.

The cottage's hillside position has made possible a delightful upside-down room layout. There are two double bedrooms downstairs (one en-suite), but the main accommodation is upstairs: a bright and spacious living area, a third double bedroom, a cosy snug or study, a stylish modern shower room, and a large and well equipped kitchen-diner with French doors leading out to a sheltered patio and garden with outside table and seating. The garden is very private and is not overlooked There is gas-fired central heating, and the living area has a wood burning stove.

There is a good fibre wi-fi connection, and there are flat screen TVs in the living area and one of the bedrooms.

The kitchen has a large gas hob, built-in oven and microwave, slow-cooker, large fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer.

Bed linen, towels, tea towels and toiletries are provided.

Easy on-street parking a few metres away.

Twynholm is an attractive traditional Galloway village on a hilly site, with interesting side lanes and an old mill lade. Centrally located in Galloway, it is only a few miles from the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park.

There is a nice pub, the Star Hotel, in the village, which serves mealsThere is also a car repair garage which sells fuel and incorporates a small village shop. Just outside the village, in easy walking distance, is the Cocoa Bean Chocolate Factory, which is a popular tourist attraction, especially with children, and also operates as a wedding venue.

Just three miles away on the River Dee is Kirkcudbright, with its elegant Georgian architecture, historic MacLellan's Castle, museum, planetarium, shops, pubs and eating places, and active fishing harbour and yacht marina. It became famous as a centre for artists in the early 20th century, and this tradition continues to the present day.

Five miles to the west, in a beautiful situation in the Fleet Valley, is picturesque Gatehouse of Fleet, with some good hotels/eating places, and the popular Mill on the Fleet visitor centre. There are lovely walks in Castramont Wood Nature Reserve, near Gatehouse, where deer and red squirrels can be seen, with a wonderful show of bluebells in the spring.

There are delightful beaches in the area at Knockbrex, Carrick Shore and Fleet Bay, all just around six miles from Twynholm.

The main town in the area is Castle Douglas, which is known as the Region's 'Food Town' and is just ten minutes drive to the east. The long main street is lined with numerous interesting independent shops, cafes and restaurants, and the town also has two good supermarkets. The ancient Threave Castle stands on an island in the River Dee a mile or two from the town, and there is an osprey-viewing platform nearby. The famous Threave Garden a short distance away is fascinating for garden lovers, and is also a popular wedding venue.

There are also Wildlife Photography Hides nearby, and our photo gallery includes photos of kingfishers, goldfinches and a sparrowhawk, taken there by one of our guests.

Dramatic ancient standing stones can be seen at Cairnholy, near Carsluith, near Gatehouse of Fleet. They are the remains of two Neolithic burial chambers, and are about 5.000 years old.

Beautiful Loch Ken extends from just north of Castle Douglas all the way up to New Galloway, and has areas for fishing, boating and nature conservation.

Ivy Cottage is an ideal base to explore all these fascinating places.

- "Glenterry is located in a secluded area of Dumfries & Galloway less than 10 minutes drive between Gatehouse of Fleet and Kirkcudbright. It is a very quiet area with the only other property for miles a couple of hundred yards away. The house was spotlessly clean, centrally heated and had all the amenities we needed for our stay. There is a twin bedroom downstairs and a separate wet room with toilet that requires a walk through the living room and kitchen to reach from the bedroom. Both of these are large and suitable for those with limited mobility - one of our party has Parkinson's and managed fine. Upstairs there are 2 large bedrooms with a large bathroom that has a walk-in shower. There is also a smaller room with comfortable armchairs for hanging out in. For eating out, I would recommend the Ship Inn and Masonic Arms in Gatehouse of Fleet, The Selkirk Arms in Kirkcudbright, The Old Schoolhouse on the A75 and Ernespie in Castle Douglas."

Established as a Royal Burgh in 1455, giving it status to trade with ports outside Scotland, Kirkcudbright has always been supported by a busy fishing trade. Behind this working harbour, its wide streets and pastel coloured houses, a mix of Georgian villas and Victorian townhouses, make for a very attractive town centre, complete with the ruined McLellan's Castle. Kirkcudbright is also known as the artists' town, established by Edward Hornel in the late nineteenth century and still the case today, with a fine collection of art galleries, crafts, cafés and antique shops. The area offers a quiet and relaxing atmosphere with attractive coastal landscapes and plenty to offer the whole family.

Guest Reviews:

- "The house was so beautiful and the location was amazing. Having tea in the sunroom every morning overlooking the bay was a highlight I looked forward to. The oldest granddaughter loved the piano. The rest of us enjoyed walking down to the bay and walking the many country roads surrounding the house. The location of the house was remote and it was a bit of an excursion on narrow roads to get there but it was well worth it. It was so peaceful and relaxing. There was no wi-fi and the reception on our cell phones was spotty, but it was not a problem (it kept the teenagers off their devices). It was a bit of a trek to the nearest grocery store but it was an adventure. My advice is to stock up when you do go to the store so you don’t have to make another trip. We had a wonderful time and if we are ever back in Scotland we would definitely stay again. Thank you "
