Double queen rooms were on the slightly small side but didn’t affect our happy stay because the mattresses were good quality and the room was modern, very clean. In the morning we all enjoyed the make your own waffles with multiple customization options. It was only for one night and booked for its close proximity to thanksgiving point. As a Mother and frequent traveler this hotel checked all my boxes as a hotel I would happily return to: Modern, semi-luxurious, clean, multiple activities within the hotel (board games, pool/hot tub, pool table) enjoyable breakfast, comfortable mattresses, and fun for even hard to please teens. Suite 2 is "Annie's Room," where the original owner Annie Johnston Kearns stayed--she ran the hotel while her actor husband, Mose, traveled. The suite's crown jewel is its hand-painted floral wallpaper; you'll also appreciate the east- and south-facing windows and the darling vintage furniture. The suite includes a king-size bed, full-size sofa bed, kitchenette (with microwave, toaster, fridge, and coffee maker), and a dining table and chairs. A light breakfast and hot tub are also included.

Other things to note
When construction of the Victorian Eclectic hotel on 200 South began in 1892, it replaced a log cabin. The juxtaposition aptly illustrates Utah’s transformation in the late 19th century: the newly connected railroad had quelled Utah’s isolation as a pioneer frontier and brought East Coast and international influence.

Dogtooth brick arches around the windows and stately stained glass above the entrances—hardly a utilitarian pioneer style—anticipated what Springville would become: Art City, which some have claimed to have the highest concentration of artists per capita. In addition to its design, the inn’s proprietors have leaned toward the artistic. An original owner, Moses Johnson, was a prominent actor and drama teacher. His wife, Anna Kearns Johnson, mostly ran the hotel as Moses was away with a traveling acting troupe. Subsequent owners were William and Loretta Chase Kearns. Both Loretta and her son Howard, who grew up in the hotel, were professional visual artists. The Springville Museum of Art preserves their pieces in its current collection.

The inn has been run under many owners, some artistic and some otherwise, and has been called the Johnson/Kearns Hotel, Kearns House, Manitou Hotel, Valley Tavern Hotel, and the Victorian Inn Bed and Breakfast. In 1980 the inn had fallen into disrepair and was set to be demolished, but restorationists Craig Lott and Randall Poulsen recognized its potential. They restored it using as many original components as possible, earning a 1991 Utah Heritage Foundation Project Award. (They also acquired and restored the stone’s-throw-away H.T. Reynolds store, which is now run as Magleby’s restaurant.) The inn was first recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. After renovations in 2021–22, the property is now known as Art City Inn. All major systems are updated and it is furnished in a mid-century modern style with comfortable, modern amenities.

Over its 130 years, the inn has developed a sense of mystery. Why was the basement entrance blocked off with dirt and concrete for decades, only to be uncovered later? What was the menu like while it was run as a bed and breakfast? Was the inn really used as a hospital initially? What kind of travelers have been here, stopping off on the railroad depot just beside it? Which artists gathered here to collaborate and inspire? What are the stories of all the brides and grooms married in the front lobby? And is there really an owner’s life savings buried somewhere under the building?

We just updated Suite 7 with a solid wood canopy bed and a Sealy Perfect Sleeper Presidential Suite mattress. The bed could not be more inviting! The suite also includes a spacious living area with a double-sized sofa bed, 10-foot ceilings, double vanities, a dining set, and vintage appliances. You can park right outside your door, making this a very private yet accessible suite. It is a favorite here at the Art City Inn!

Other things to note
Art City Inn was originally built in 1892 by Moses and Anna Kearns Johnson. Moses was a prominent actor and son of the founder of Springville, Aaron Johnson. At the time, the inn was known as the Johnson Hotel and was one of three hotels in Springville, Utah. Two significant railroads connected the town to the rest of the US which created a need for accommodations for visitors, along with Springville's success in agricultural processing.

William Henry Kearns and Loretta Chase Kearns bought it in the early 1900s, and added onto it sometime between 1908 and 1925 with the two-story rear wing. Loretta and her son Howard were artists and while living at the hotel, they painted multiple pieces of art, now under the care of the Springville Museum of Art.

Throughout the following decades, it would be run as an inn under the names of Kearns House, Manitou Hotel, Valley Tavern Hotel, amongst others. In the early 2000s, most of the major systems were updated and it was then run as a Victorian-style bed and breakfast for several years. Finally in 2021, extensive renovations were started and then finished in 2022 to turn it into what you see today. Welcome to Art City!
