The Aurora is a free standing home in the heart of Grand Marais near the harbor. Designed by celebrated Minnesota architect David Salmela and newly constructed in 2018/19. This collection of modern homes has been featured in Mn. Monthly, Midwest Home, Arch Daily, and other publications around the globe. We have even won awards for this architecture as far away as Sweden. The Aurora is the smaller sister to The Sky House and the Horizon, two sibling properties to Aurora in the exclusive enclave called "tre søstra" which means "three sisters" in Danish. Aurora is one bedroom, one bath, plus a very nice sleeper sofa for one adult or two children, and floor bed for one. There is a roomy main living space that seems to float above the area buildings and has wonderful view of the harbor, the town, and Lake Superior. Although designed ideally as an upscale oasis for two, 4 people can stay here in a pinch. The Aurora provides an inspiring modern space that allows for privacy among those sharing the lodging, and also provides a captivating view from the great room area on the top floor of the Grand Marais harbor, the neighborhood, and the town close by. She has a desk area in the bedroom, a walk out blue stone patio from the bedroom, a planning desk in the hall, an all tile bathroom with walk in shower, a large entry area, a full laundry, a beautiful flight of stairs to the upper level, a balcony, panoramic windows, fully modern kitchen with top of the line appliances, lighted drawers and butcher block countertops; dining for 4 with 6 possible, a custom sofa that sleeps one adult, or two children, a custom floor bed for one, and a gas fireplace. Everything is in walking distance from our little micro community in the heart of Grand Marais. Every restaurant, bar, coffee shop, gallery and Grand Marais' famous beach are all within a very short stroll from your private residence. The home is designed in modern Nordic fashion based on the original Stabur design- a work building commonly seen in Northern Europe. This design culminates a timeline of Scandinavian and Nordic design that the Miller's began on the property next door that also honored northern work buildings in the roots of their designs. There is off street parking under a car port. There is an electric car charging station in the carport as well. There is a fully modern and capable kitchen, an architect designed built in sofa and contemporary gas fireplace. Note the unique skylight with modern light treatments and the push button electronic pop up television that you can leave hidden if you wish. There is also a balcony. The entire home has slate floors and modern cabinets. There is a utility room with full size washer and dryer. Everything about The Aurora is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. These homes have an incredibly small footprint both structurally and environmentally. The foundations were designed to take up as little of the yard as possible- by being small at the start and increasing as you go up just like the old Stabur upon which this design is based. The energy efficiency is profound because these are composed of structurally insulated panels which are incredibly efficient. No cost has been spared to make the Aurora the highest quality, most significant architectural addition to Grand Marais' beautiful landscape. We hope you will find it warm, welcoming, and a once in a lifetime experience in one of the world's most magical places. We have written a detailed guide to what we consider the most special "secret" places in the area. You can pick and chose your own adventures with it for reference depending on your tastes and the weather. That guide is available to you inside the home and also sent out via links to videos. - "This is a wonderful place to stay in Grand Marais! The house is lovely and the view every morning is gorgeous. Plus, the location is excellent and within walking distance of great places to explore and dine in Grand Marais." - "Great!" - "It was memorable to learn that the property was intentionally designed to be based on squares, no rounded corners or angles. As a result, the modern vibe and tastefully decorated interior made for a relaxing haven and the surrounding scenery of Grand Marias seemed to be a bonus. From the welcoming reception of the cherry blossoms to hiking the ‘secret’ trails, the entire experience was invigorating. A must “do again”."

The Writer's Cabin is a quaint, long established residence hidden in the oldest part of town. It has been fully restored and modernized to provide all the creature comforts and yet remain historic in nature. This is an original "Tiny home" as it was originally constructed nearly 100 years ago. We did expand the bath to accommodate the jacuzzi, and we raised the ceilings and brightened the entire cabin. A sauna is available on a first come first serve basis for an additional fee. Contact us for details. The Writer's Cabin is set amidst lush landscaping for privacy, and the cabin is only steps from the harbor. All amenities are provided including an enameled cast iron gas fireplace, a therapeutic air tub for two, a queen bed, a well equipped modern kitchen with oven and stove, smart Roku TV, an antique secretary writing desk, high speed wireless internet (best in town), and various objects of interest representative of famous writers and local writers including locally written books and Ernest Hemmingway's favorite model of typewriter. A sauna is available for a fee on a first come first serve basis and all info on it can be found on our web site or inquire with us here. Attention Air BnB guests: If you paid the dog fee through Air BnB it only covers one dog, you will be responsible to contact the cabin owner to pay for any 2nd dog. We do not recommend more than 2 guests in the Writer's Cabin, it has one queen bed and one non fold out sofa. The base rate included 2 guests and additional guests are $30 per guest up to 3 maximum. 4 guests are possible but it is going to be crowded. Dogs are $100 per dog with a maximum of 2 dogs. The property is kept exceptionally clean and we try to remove all evidence of dog hair between stays. Our cleaners work very hard to remove all evidence of dogs and that takes time and effort and we appreciate anything you can do to help.
With nine windows and one skylight, there is great natural light throughout the little cabin.
Seagulls and fog greet you when you rise.
This is simply a spectacular location right in the historic residential heart of Grand Marais very close to the harbor- yet still private and relatively quiet compared almost anywhere else in bustling town of Grand Marais. We are not on a busy street or on highway 61. You are perfectly positioned to discover the town and participate in the small town buzz.
The outdoor space has a balanced blend of sun and shade, functionality and whimsicality. This is a space intended as an exclusive retreat from the rigors of small town life. It is designed so that you can be as private as your vacation requires. Dense shrubs, apple trees and tall fences ensure your own seclusion. The feeling is that of a secret retreat just off the main avenues.
We love dogs. Dogs are allowed at this property with your acceptance of our dog rules and payment of the fee. No dogs under 1 year old. Each pet fee is good for one dog. $100 per dog per stay and it is the guest's responsibility to ensure payment of the fee and to be familiar with our dog rules. No cats or other creatures :-). Dogs are not allowed on furniture without a fresh, clean blanket that you provide that they can not scratch away. Dogs must be kept in portable kennels if you are not present.
Lastly, we recommend you consider trip insurance- especially in winter, or if you are taking classes that may be cancelled. We have discounted our rates on our direct website by an additional 7% (the total savings between our direct site and say... another famous site is now 14-21% but only if you book on our direct site). We are doing this so that you may select trip insurance during your booking process. It will be offered to you while you are completing your booking and they charge 7%. We do not make any money on that. The cancellation policy we have had for 10 years is as follows:
You may cancel within 48 hours of your booking transaction for any reason. After that you can cancel with a 10% penalty up until 60 days prior to your arrival. After that you may cancel but your deposit can not be refunded.
If you have trip insurance you can be reimbursed according to which policy you chose. And we are subsidizing it for you by having reduced our rental rates well below any other rates where our properties can be found. It's up to you, pocket the savings and run the risk of cancellation, or still get some savings and have the peace of mind of having some of your investment in your vacation protected in case of unforeseen events. The 'Lighthouse' is a special lodging overlooking the town and harbor of Grand Marais from its center. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. You can sit up in bed and view the harbor and the big lake beyond. If you would like to access the sauna please contact the owners in advance or book it yourself on our website and set up a reservation- it is an add on expense and is first come first serve. Total is $49 per night plus tax and it is booked on our direct site. November and April have sauna specials- please go to the sauna listing to see those. At the Lighthouse there is covered parking that leads to a stairway that takes you up to the Lighthouse. The view of the old harbor from the balcony is stunning. There is a wrought iron table and chairs on the balcony for relaxing. Inside the Lighthouse you will find a queen bed, tile shower and bathroom, galley kitchen, custom dining table for two, LCD TV (please bring your own streaming codes, there is no cable or area broadcast content). The bed is set at an angle and faces southeast to capture the views of the harbor in the morning through large windows. Many of our guests yearn for a connection with nature, the lake, the community, a reconnection with each other, and permission to come to a full stop for deep rest. There are transom windows around the perimeter of the apartment that let in light from all points on the compass but do not compromise privacy. Eye masks are provided for those that want to sleep in :-). Notice how the light changes as the day progresses. Observe the color differences around sunset or early in the morning as the Great Lake passes through its moods. The ceiling is very high and is vaulted and timberframed with unique 'Dragon Beams' from local timberframe artisans. Topping the lighthouse is an octagonal lighthouse cupola that lets light in all day and moonlight at night and contains a genuine ships lantern that you can switch on from the bed. And on top of the cuppola is a custom copper ball, in keeping with the lighthouses of the North Shore. The antique ship's light that occupies the cuppola can guide you as you walk home after a night of festivities in the town. There is an all cedar Finnish Sauna next door to the Lighthouse for your exclusive use for an additional fee. Usage comes with robes and additional towels and complete instructions. Simply state you would like to add the Sauna to the notes of your stay when you make your reservation and we will contact you with details and availability. If sauna availability is important to make your decision to stay with us then please message us before you make your reservation so we can see if it is available during your stay. Watch the fog roll in and out from your bed while you drink your morning coffee, and listen to the strains of local live music as the town celebrates the short summers at night. The gally kitchen is small but thoroughly modern with all the necessities. The Lighthouse is above the 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin', a restored historic log home. The Lighthouse is known for its inspiring charm. There have been plays and musicals written here, a fair number of proposals, and a good number of honeymoons. Come share the fantastic energy that is The Lighthouse.

Walk up to the entry area and pass under the arch to the first of 3 decks where there is room to store bikes in summer, and once inside, there is plenty of room to shake off the snow, hang the coats and set down the skis or snowshoes. Each bedroom is very private is separated from the other by a soundproofed floor and ceiling for maximum privacy. Each bedroom also has its own restroom with shower, work station, free standing closet, queen bed, and balcony or patio with great views for getting away from the group. Continuing up the inspiring staircase leads you to the primary gathering area on the top floor. This area is breathtaking with its expansive windows, view of the town and harbor, Lake Superior and the grounds. It is simply the best view from a lodging in Grand Marais. There is a fully modern and capable kitchen, an architect designed built in sofa for single sleepers, and a contemporary gas fireplace. The sofa can sleep one adult or two children as is, or it can be modified to sleep one adult above and one adult on floor cushions. Note the unique skylight with natural light filtering treatments and the push button electronic pop up television that you can leave hidden if you wish. There is also a wrap around deck on this top level with fantastic view of the rooftops and harbor and the town and of course Lake Superior. There is a utility room with full size washer and dryer. Everything about the Sky House is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. These homes have an incredibly small footprint both structurally and environmentally. The foundations were designed to take up as little of the yard as possible- by being small at the start and increasing as you go up just like the old Stabur upon which this design is based. No cost has been spared to make the Sky House the highest quality, most significant architectural addition to Grand Marais' beautiful landscape. We hope you will find it warm, welcoming, and a once in a lifetime experience in one of the world's most magical places. Sauna is available on a first come first served basis and is private- message owner to verify availability prior to completing your reservation.
- "This property was perfect for our visit to the north shore. Comfortably slept 4 adults and had every amenity we could have asked for. The views of the harbor were expansive. We will be planning a return trip!" - "We loved staying here and it was such a convenient location to walk into town for meals or shopping. I also took my dog to the local dog park that Todd had recommended!" - "Really wonderful, unique, and charming location! Very clean with all the comforts of home. The rooms feel very private and almost no sound carries between levels. We brought our 2 year old and he is very cautious, but the space would probably be better for children who can be safe on stairs. The hosts have so many unique touches to the property and the skyhouse has an unparalled view of the harbor. Extremely convienient and walkable to all the restaurants and sights in town. Highly recommend."

- "Three generations came together to celebrate a young adult who completed hiking all 50 Wisconsin State Parks. We hiked Big Bay State Park together as a finale. The cottage served as a perfect base for both that hike and Lake Superior kayaking the next day. Enjoyed seeing foxes, deer and listening to hundreds of birds on the great screen porch." - "We hade an incredible time staying in the Brickyard Creek cottage! We enjoyed reading in the screen porch in the evenings listening to the ambient sounds of birds and nature, while being protected from the mosquitos. Very close to town and the lake while being able to have peace and quiet in our own area was the perfect combination! (our only gripe was that the couch being small and uncomfortable, not bad!)"

As a small way of showing our gratitude, we’re offering a discount to our Canadian guests. We know times aren’t easy, and we want to make it a little lighter for you to visit a place that has felt like home for so many.
We’d love to welcome you back—whether it’s for a quiet retreat, an adventure in the woods, or just time to breathe in the lake air.
FAQ:
Is this cabin for everyone? — Not exactly… We want to be clear that this is an off-grid cabin that was meant to be used as a rustic retreat.
Is the bed upstairs? — Yes. The bed is located in the high loft which can only be accessed by a steep ladder. Guests use at their own risk.
Is there Wifi or cell network service? — There is some cell signal. Verizon tends to have much better reception than At&t or T-Mobile.
There is no wifi… some say for an even better connection :)
What is a “dry” cabin? — This means you will be completely off-grid: solar-powered lighting & charging, plumbing free, outhouse, etc.
What about water? — We provide drinking water in larger jugs May-October. Guests will need to bring any drinking or wash water November - April. We have a small creek in spring and rain barrels in summer months for collecting wash water. In winter snow can be melted for wash water.
What is your bathroom situation? — We have an A-frame outhouse just next to the cabin and a wood fired sauna most guests use as a means for showering. Guests who would prefer a little more water pressure can consider visiting the Grand Marais Rec park for a $4 shower, or buy a $10 day-pass to the Grand Marais YMCA to take advantage of the gym, workout facility, showers, hot tub, sauna, and pool.
Fire Pit & Grill? — Yes, May through Oct. We have a charcoal BBQ. Guests will need to bring charcoal and lighter fluid. There is also a fire pit. Wood bundles can be bought in town. Guests are free to use fire pit year round but are responsible for snow removal to use it if they wish to do so.
Do you have a coffee maker? — We have a pour over and filters for your use.
How remote is the cabin? — The cabin is easily accessed (approx. 300 ft) just off Hwy 61 on a maintained driveway. Your views are woods, nature & Lake Superior. While this cabin is completely private, there are neighbors several hundred feet through the woods. However, just as most cabins close to Lake Superior, you could have some road noise.
Winter Conditions:
We recommend AWD/4WD vehicle from Nov 1 to April 30. 2 wheel drive vehicles are free to use the parking at the bottom of the driveway (300ft from cabin). Due to plowing shortages we cannot guarantee that the road will be plowed on a daily basis.
We have 2 parking spots available at the bottom of the driveway in the case that guests are uncomfortable with driving the steep hill or that the conditions are unfavorable to do so. It is approximately a 300ft walk up to the cabin from the bottom of the driveway.
Pets
:
* Only one well-behaved and trained dog per cabin reservation is permitted, subject to an additional nightly fee. The dog must be over 12 months old and fully trained—no exceptions.
If your dog is likely to bark excessively or cause damage, we request that you leave them at home to help us continue offering dog-friendly accommodations. The credit card used for the reservation will be charged for any damages. If your dog exhibits excessive barking, disruptive behavior, we may ask you to leave without a refund and will not be allowed for future reservations.
* Ensure your dog is included in the reservation and that the pet fee is paid before arrival. Bringing a dog that is not listed on your reservation will result in a $250 fine in addition to the nightly pet rate.
* Dogs cannot be left alone in the cabin or on the property under any circumstances. We have wildlife in the area that is dangerous to dogs and can be fatal if left alone. If you’re unsure about your dog's behavior, please arrange for a pet sitter. Pet fees are non-refundable.
* Dogs are not allowed in lofted areas, beds, or furniture. Please remember to pack your dog’s cozy bed for their stay!
* Owners must clean up after their dogs and dispose of waste properly. Failure to do so will incur an additional fee.
* Clean your pet’s paws before entering the cabin.
* Dogs must be leashed at all times on the property—no exceptions. Keep your dogs under strict control at all times around the site and nearby in woods which has lots of wildlife.
* Any damage must be reported within 1 hour of arrival; otherwise, you will be held responsible. Items chewed on or destroyed will be replaced entirely at the guest’s expense.
* We’re pet friendly but also cleaner friendly! If cleaners have to clean pet waste, rid of strong odors or stains are left behind requiring an excessive amount of time, we will compensate them for their time at your expense.
Regarding Service Dogs and Emotional Support Animals: Emotional Support Animals differ from trained and registered service animals. Emotional Support Animals must comply with our pet rules and the pet fee must be paid. Service dogs are welcome without an additional fee. You will be asked two questions permitted by the ADA:
1. Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
2. What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
Service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered unless these devices interfere with the animal’s work or the disability prevents their use. In such cases, the animal must be under control through voice, signal, or other effective means and never left alone.
If a pet is misrepresented as a service animal, we may seek financial restitution, report fraudulent claims, and evict the guest without further notice, with no refund for the remaining stay.
Note that, as of 2022, both vacation rentals and airlines no longer recognize Emotional Support Animals as service animals. If you have an ESA, please book a pet-friendly property and pay the applicable fees.

- "Cute little space for relaxation, privacy, and great views of Lake superior. I liked the concept of the environmentally friendly property. Since I was headed into the boundary waters next, this was the perfect gateway to the extended outdoor getaway." - "Loved this little slice of heaven on the north shore. We had a wonderful day of hiking and enjoying Grand Marais, and then we were treated to the best thunderstorm all cozied up with the fireplace in the evening. The bucket shower was so slick and felt great to get cleaned up and chill in my spa robe in the sunshine on the deck after a long day in the woods. We can’t wait to go back!"

(In May of 2024, we finished building a wood-fired sauna and off- grid shower building at this property. Hope you'll like it!)
Placed along the gorgeous Fall River, this A-frame cabin has a secluded wilderness feel, just two miles West of Grand Marais. Take advantage of Grand Marais' renowned restaurants, shops, and shoreline or relax by your river-side campfire after a day of exploration or relaxation. Enjoy the surrounding wood, river, and trails of this 25 acre escape. Relax or catch up on a good book in the sun-filled and spacious interior, from a hammock between two birch trees, or on the large front deck surrounded by nature.
Our family loves hiking the north shore's rivers and always thought it would be great to have a cabin on one of those great rivers. Here it is!
Even though the cabin is located only a mile from the shore of Lake Superior and 2.5 miles from Grand Marais, it maintains a truly North woods, off grid feel: a winding private gravel road heads up the hill from Lake Superior, crossing over a small creek, where you'll park at the trail head. From there you'll hike 400 yards (about a 5 minute walk) on a foot path to this charming cabin in the woods, perched along the bluff of the Fall River.
A cart is available if you want it. The cabin has a well-equipped kitchen with pots and pans, silverware, glassware, a propane stovetop, a double insulated cooler, and over 30 gallons of water for drinking, dishes, and cleaning.
There is a cozy bedroom downstairs with a queen bed and up the spiral staircase is a window-filled loft with three twin beds. All beds will be supplied with pillows and bedding.
There is a small solar powered system supporting the lighting for the bedroom, kitchen, and loft and a phone charger.
The Sun-Mar compost toilet is environmentally friendly, convenient, and comfortable. The deck and included hammocks offer the opportunity to relax and bask in the 25 acre wood and listen to the river run.
Some will enjoy splashing in the river, or swimming beneath the waterfall where the Fall River meets the lake. Some will buy a day-pass to the Grand Marais YMCA (around $10) to take advantage of the gym, workout facility, showers, hot tub, sauna, and pool or visit the shower facility at the Grand Marais municipal campground $4.
The newly constructed A-frame (2019-2020) is comfortable with many windows and a vaulted ceiling that offer abundant natural lighting and breezes.
Kids and adults alike will enjoy walking along the bank or through the moving water of the larger Fall River, or racing sticks, and rock searching on the smaller creek. From the cabin, expect to see deer, squirrels, and birds ranging from songbirds to woodpeckers, grouse, ravens, and bald eagles. The woods are also home to less frequent visitors like black bear and moose. Coyote and timber-wolves can be heard howling nearby as well. Also keep an eye out for edible (and non-edible) mushrooms as well as wild raspberries.
All of this, a short bike ride, run, or drive from the Lake Superior shoreline and Grand Marais!
"This off-grid cabin offered us a truly unique Northwoods experience that allowed us to disconnect and experience off grid life in the woods while being a few minutes from downtown Grand Marais. It was the best of both worlds, both stunningly beautiful... can't wait to come back!"
- "I loved how remote this cabin was. It had everything we needed for our stay. The kids couldn't get enough of playing in the river. We most certainly will be back!" - "We absolutely loved our time at River Run! Last year our family stayed in the other property, Ferny Fern. Now it has become a summer tradition. It’s so nice to be off the grid, hike in with the kids, and have a camping like experience but with a cozy cabin. Thank you! We would love to return!"

5 acres with plenty of wilderness to explore!
Ever since we spent 5 months backpacking around Europe, we have wanted to provide a place to host travelers ourselves, and this is the result of those dreams!
Note: We've previously listed this both as an individual room and as an entire house, depending on when we were living in the house ourselves. Therefore, some reviews are from guests who rented the entire house while we were away. We currently live in the house and are just renting the room.
Guest access
You will have exclusive access to the guest bedroom we call the "North Shore Nest," as well the bathroom directly across the hall.
You are free to use our washing/drying machines, and microwave/stovetop (if needed to reheat something, we ask that you not cook big meals in our kitchen).

We live in the same house and work in Grand Marais, but sometimes work from home. We respect your privacy and don't expect much conversation! Everything is set up for easy self check-in, but we will be available by message if a need arises during your stay.

Please note that though the house is single-level, there is a short flight of exterior stairs up to the front door.
WINTER ACCESS: We live on a narrow road in an area that gets a lot of snow. Guests should bring a vehicle with 4-wheel drive or snow tires if booking in November - April. While our road and driveway is plowed, we cannot guarantee that it will be plowed first thing after a winter storm, and vehicles without 4WD or snow tires may get stuck.

Welcome to Siren’s Landing on Madeline Island. I have a sweet little private guest house for you. Cozy bed sleeps two. Refresh your spirit in this little nest in the woods. Fall asleep to the frogs singing in the pond. In the shared space (main pic): Grill on the back deck. Soak in the sunlight through antique windows. This place was creatively built by different islanders with much love and I hope you feel it. It’s also a quick walk to the beach or a short bike ride into town. See you soon!
The space
Boozhoo (hello)!
I’m Kelsey, and welcome to Siren’s Landing.
Siren’s Landing is a unique, solar-powered, off-grid cabin in the woods with a cute little guest house, affectionately called the Sun Shack, just for you. The rest of the house is available for guest use, except for the master bedroom, which is mine;)
The property revolves around the main cabin (featured in the landing photo, with giant windows) with 4 out-buildings (including yours) connected by a big back deck with a fenced-in yard.
I’m a wheelchair-user, so most of this space is made to be wheelchair accessible. Your space is not ADA, although I do have a ramp available upon request.
The Main cabin is a 24x24 ft space with the kitchen, couch, living room and dining area all available to you. The big windows let in beautiful light, and the eclectic interior creates a cozy atmosphere to make you feel both inspired and right at home. All power comes from Solar and propane, which you’ll see out back.
The bathhouse is an 8x10 foot space with cedar paneling, a big roll-in shower, flushing toilet and sink. The heat is propane. This cabin is a short, 15 foot distance from the main cabin.
The Sun Shack (bedroom #2): 10x12 foot whimsical little space with a Queen bed, soft and cozy bedding, and window above your head for sweet morning light and fresh air. The door also has a window for more light, and another west facing window. This little bungalow has no power, however you’ll have a rechargeable lamp and battery-powered fan, so you can read by moonlight and stay cool. Just a stone’s throw from the bathhouse and the main cabin.
Enjoy the back deck with your coffee/tea in the morning, or grillin’ and chillin’ anytime.
There’s also a bon fire ring and seating in the yard for your nighttime fireside fun. Don’t forget the s’mores!
This place has a very special, old forest with lots of little friends and plants and fungi. Keep an eye and ear perked for the turtles in the driveway, frogs in the pond, talking owls, and lots of deer friends. If you get up early enough you’ll see mama and her fawn on their daily morning walk through the yard. And if you’re really lucky, you might see a black bear. Check out the Animal Spirit book on the bookshelf if you’re curious…after all, you’re on the island of the yellow flicker, otherwise known as the yellow breasted woodpecker. Welcome to Mooningwanekaaning (in Ojibwemowin), or Madeline Island.
See you soon;)
Kelsey
Guest access
All spaces are accessible for guests, except for the moon shack, which is storage. Enjoy!
Other things to note
Another reminder that the Sun Shack is featured in the pictures but it is not the main photo on this listing. The main photo is the main cabin, which is a shared space. The Sun Shack is your private guest room. You will also have access to the bathhouse, which is a shared space for use of the sink, toilet and shower. The sun shack is just a stone’s throw from the main cabin and the bathroom, just off the front side of the main cabin and the driveway.

The downstairs includes a bathroom with shower that is near the bedroom that is exclusively for your use. Towels, shampoo, conditioner and body wash are available for your use as well as a hair dryer.
Bedroom door locks from the inside only. A small refrigerator is in the room.
For weeklong guests, additional space in the host's refrigerator may be used.
The house is shared with host (no other guests). Host occupies the upstairs, but may use the kitchen and the kitchen entry door to enter and exit the house. You will most likely not have much contact with the host during your stay.
Other spaces available to the guest include:
Dining room next to the bedroom with large table for your use

Gas fireplace in living room
Kitchen - Microwave (Stove and oven are NOT included in one or two night stay) and Toaster

Portable air conditioning unit is included in the bedroom during summer months.
This property is set in the middle of Park Point, which is a lovely island that juts out five miles into Lake Superior. This is a quiet neighborhood (no parties allowed).
The beauty of this area is year-round, with beach access. There is a path behind the house that leads over the dunes and down to the lake. It is marvelous to walk down there year-round or to sit up on the dunes and watch ships, kayaks, etc. go by while enjoying a glass of wine.
Please note that poison ivy is on large areas of the dunes anywhere on Park Point. Stay on the carpeted path on your way to the beach to avoid running into it.
Guests can enter the front door with a door code. Host will usually greet you at the door.
Please ask for any help that you may need getting around Duluth, Canal Park, things to do, etc. I am laid back and very respectful of your privacy. If you want total privacy, that is fine, please let me know about your communication preference.
Canal Park is trendy old warehouse district; a bustling neighborhood of shops and restaurants, two miles away. If you like long walks, it is. possible to walk there, and is fun to walk via the beach there or back. Buses run on Park Point every hour beginning around 6:00 am until 7:00 pm so you can also catch a bus to and from Canal Park for 75 cents each way!
While down in Canal Park enjoy shopping, dining and using the boardwalk right on Lake Superior! It is a great place for people watching or to view the amazing lake traffic going through the canal, including 1000-foot freighters moving through (see schedule for boat arrivals and to know when the bridge is going up).
The sidewalk in front of the property is likewise enjoyable and safe to use even in the early evening hours. Also popular on Park Point are biking, roller blading, kayaking (bring your own!), canoeing, cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
Please make note that in the summer when boats are going through the canal and the bridge is up (we call this being “bridged”), the traffic can extend quite a ways down the point. If you have to be somewhere at a specific time, especially in the summer months, make sure to leave early. Check out the online schedule for boat arrivals.
Also, in winter when we have snowfalls, allow for 12 hours time to get plowed out (usually much faster, but one never knows).
Please remove shoes in the entranceway, to keep the floors clean.

Guest access
Guests can use the downstairs living room, dining room and microwave in the kitchen. The rest of the kitchen is for host only. The house is owner occupied but most of the time, you will have the shared spaces to yourself.
During your stay
I will be around most days but I spend most of that either in the kitchen downstairs for mealtime prep and eating, and the rest of the time I am upstairs. This will allow for guests to have the downstairs, including the living room with TV, or the dining room and kitchen eating area to themselves most of the time.
Please ask how to operate the sauna and plan for 45 minutes to one hour for it to heat up, depending on how hot you like it. If you are here for a weeklong stay, you can ask host for laundry directions.

Placed along the gorgeous Fall River, this A-frame cabin has a secluded wilderness feel, just two miles from Grand Marais. Take advantage of Grand Marais' renowned restaurants, shops, and shoreline or relax by your river-side campfire after a day of exploration or relaxation.
Enjoy the new sauna and off-grid shower house! Rest or catch up on a good book in the sun-filled and spacious interior, from a hammock between two birch trees, or on the large front deck surrounded by nature.
The space
(We typically keep a two night minimum, but occasionally we have a single night sandwiched between two longer stays. We invite single night stays on those nights and have a handful open. Please check the calendar for updated availability.)
Our family loves hiking the north shore's rivers and always thought it would be great to have a cabin on one of those great rivers. Here it is!
The lush green vegetation surrounding the cabin transforms into dazzling fall colors in September and October. Spring melt turns the otherwise meandering, cascading Fall River into a powerful torrent you can hear from inside the cabin.
Even though the cabin is located only a mile from the shore of Lake Superior and 2.5 miles from Grand Marais, it maintains a truly North woods, off grid feel: a winding gravel road heads up the hill from Lake Superior, crossing over a small creek, where you'll park at the trail head. From there you'll hike 400 yards (about a 5 minute walk) on a foot path to this charming cabin in the woods, perched along the bluff of the Fall River. Please take a moment to look over the map when you arrive at the cabin. There are no fences or much in the way of signage to mark property lines, so please be aware of your location and be considerate of neighboring cabins and land owners when exploring the area.
A cart is available if you want it. The cabin has a well equipped kitchen with pots and pans, silverware, glassware, a propane stovetop, a double insulated built-in cooler, and over 30 gallons of water for drinking, dishes, and cleaning.
The A-frame has south-facing floor to ceiling windows that showcase the surrounding woods and allow plenty of light and warmth. For brisk spring and fall nights there is a small propane heater to take off the chill.
Take advantage of the newly built wood fired sauna and off-grid grid shower house on property.
$10 day-pass to the Grand Marais YMCA to take advantage of the gym, workout facility, showers, hot tub, sauna, and pool (check hours online at cook county ymca).
The newly constructed A-frame (2020) is comfortable with many windows and a vaulted ceiling that offer abundant natural lighting and breezes.

This quaint cabin is filled with windows bringing views of the surrounding wood. It features a polished/rustic interior complete with well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and wood stove. Fall River access and guests now have access to a new wood-fired sauna and off grid-shower house.
The space
One of a kind Northern getaway!
A short drive up the hill from Lake Superior, and three hundred fifty yards along a beautiful wooded footpath will bring you to this unusually secluded and ultra cozy North Shore cabin.
There are some seasonal views of Lake Superior from here, but the real allure of this cabin is the beautiful spot it's been carefully set on. There is a wide variety of North woods flora and fauna, meandering creeks, and the gorgeous Fall River in your back yard... all of this while being within easy reach of Lake Superior, Grand Marais, Lutsen, Gunflint trail, etc.
It's a great place to appreciate dark starry skies and total silence. Guests who walk the trail quietly will routinely bump into deer, grouse, eagles, ravens, pileated woodpeckers and less frequently fox, bears, wolves, and even moose.
The many South facing windows invite sunshine throughout the cabin while overlooking the surrounding wood. The deck, hammocks, and campfire area make for a relaxing outdoor space.
The clean cozy comfort of this charming cabin is a fun contrast to the wild landscape that surrounds it . A queen bed in the spacious bedroom and a comfortable futon in the living area allow up to four guests a good night's rest. A well equipped kitchen with propane stove and oven, over 30 gallons of water supply, ice stocked cooler, dishes, pots and pans, cleaning supplies, etc. allow for great meals inside (or use the campfire grill for an outdoor cookout). The wood stove quickly takes off any chill in the spring or fall.
Some will find it a great place to unwind and explore, never leaving the property during their stay, while others will take advantage of this cabins close proximity to the great restaurants and shops of Grand Marais as well as the Lake Superior Shoreline, waterfalls, and endless hikes within the area.
Guest access
While at the cabin, we invite guests to freely explore the woods, creeks, and River on the property. Because there are no fences or obvious markers along property lines, we ask that you review the map of the area to avoid walking through neighbor's property. We also ask guests to leave a buffer area around the neighboring cabin on the property. To help maintain the feeling of seclusion, please avoid being within sight of the neighboring cabin (with a couple cabins on 26 acres it's pretty easy to do).
Other things to note
This is an amazing place for adults and children to relax and explore, but please be aware of some potential pitfalls. Especially with small children, consider the woods can be discombobulating and one can lose their way if away from a path. There are several creeks and a larger River that at times are meandering, but at other times rushing and cold. There are wild animals living amongst you. While bear and wolf issues are extremely rare, but they're presence in the area is frequent and should be noted. Probably the biggest concern is that guests may not properly stow away trash, recycling, or food , resulting in a returning bear. For the sake of future guests and the bear please be careful of your food and garbage.
