The location is 20 minutes from the state capital of Augusta, on the Winthrop-Monmouth town lines. At night, start a campfire in the lakeside fire pit with plenty of firewood provided, roast marshmallows, sip a glass of wine, watch the glow of the fire, listen to the loons, and reflect on the day and start planning the next.

Annabessacook Lake has a new, state-built, boat-launching ramp that opened in the fall of '22 along Holmes Road. The lake continues to be full of bass, some giant pickerel and pike, and plenty of perch and sunfish for the kids. Some +30-inch-long pike were caught during recent summers by renters. Several pairs of loons live on the lake and their beautifully haunting call can be heard day and night. In addition, eagles, ospreys, and cranes also reside on the lake and wild turkeys live in the nearby woods and occasionally visit.

The “Loon’s Nest” is 3 miles from downtown Winthrop, with small-town shopping, and a large grocery store and drug store; 4 miles from the town center of Monmouth with its renowned summer theater; five miles from the nearest golf course; 15 miles from the state capital of Augusta with its shopping, cinemas, restaurants, and only one hour away from LL Bean and the outlets of Freeport.

Naughty Dog Private Island Log Cabin
Cabin
Monmouth, Maine, USA

Summary:
Be alone with your pup enjoying leash freedom on this remote island. Your 1400 acre backyard is Annabessacook Lake. Enjoy pristine surroundings, a rustic, off-the-grid log cabin, with solar lighting and a hot shower. Swimming, boating, fishing, birding, and relaxing by the fire - do it all (or not). Prepare for adventure! Pack light: Bring your vacay clothes, pups, favorite food, & be ready for a blissful, private island get away. It's AWAY away.

The Space:
Naughty Dog Island is the perfect place to unwind and relax. There are lots of possibilities without a whole lot of interruptions from the outside world. Think of it as a place with a timezone of its own, where one can just be centered and present without a care in the world. It's also the worry-free place for any dog to have the freedom to explore their inner canine: even naughty dogs deserve a vacation.

Life is simple when you visit Naughty Dog Island on Annabessacook Lake. Enjoy an amazing sunrise from the front porch of your very own private island cabin, take a swim off the dock, or paddle around and explore the pristine 1400 acre lake. Unwind by the campfire, watch the sunset, and listen to the loons as they settle in for the night. Catch a glimpse of the eagles and osprey roosting in the trees overhead. If you're the fishing type, get ready for world-class bass fishing in Annabessacook Lake!

Island life is barely "roughing it", even though electricity is battery limited and plumbing is eco-unconventional. Modern amenities include: an indoor composting toilet, a private, outdoor hot shower (available during the non-freezing season), and a toasty wood stove with an infinite firewood supply. You've got choices if you need a hammock: Indoor, shoreside, or on the swim dock - hammock "emergencies" can be solved anyway you like.

COOKING: We make cooking easy: Pack heavy on food, light on gear. We supply: kitchen utensils, dishes, pots and pans, French press, coffee, tea, sugar, salt, pepper, and drinking water from our homestead well. You can cook on the propane grill and stove, or over an open fire. Naughty Dog Island adventures involve minimal visitor preparation because this is GLAMPING: bring lots of food, vacay clothes, and your pup. We'll take it from there.

HOW DO I GET TO THE ISLAND?
Every island adventure begins at our shoreside parking/dock area. From there, you've got options: Paddle, Ferry, or BYOBoat. See the details below for schedules, limitations, and FAQ. Know that we make island access for you, your crew, and your gear convenient, free, and part of your adventure.

RETURNING GUESTS: We appreciate folks who return year after year. If you've misplaced the Island Withdrawal Syndrome coupon code, remind us of your last stay and we'll send you a new one. We can't have you suffering from IWS, now can we! Also, if you are looking for an exception to minimum night requirements, please reach out.

FREE STUFF: Every Maine Island adventure includes: FREE island transportation, camp chairs, unlimited firewood, lantern, fire starter, matches, canoe or kayaks with life vests and gear. Explore Annabessacook Lake!

DOGS ON VACAY: We're dog people and Naughty Dog Island is pet-friendly for all pups. We screen all four legged visitors right after the reservation is made so that every island visitor and ferry passenger is safe and prepared. The process has the following questions: Does your dog get along with other pups and humans? Is your dog’s history bite-free? Are you willing to keep your pup on leash during your trip out? And, are you willing to be responsible for any damages your dog creates?

If there's a "NO" in there, DON'T WORRY! Because Naughty Dog Island is a private island, ANY dog - even unsociable ones - can be leash-free and worry-free. We just need to know about our four-legged challenges on the ferry-ride. Our pet fees are $30/night per pet, which gets settled up after the reservation and screening are completed.

LOOKING FOR A SHORT STAY OR WANT A SUPER DEAL? So that guests looking for longer stays have options, our minimum night stay requirements tend to start high early in the year and then drop by Summer. So if you've got a quick stay in mind and are surprised by our minimum night stay requirements, check back with us. The closer we get to an empty night, the more flexible we will be.

Same goes for our pricing: if you've got specific dates or stay in mind, book early for the sure thing. But if you're flexible on dates, flexible on which stay you want, and don't mind biting your nails while waiting for a price you like, then save the link and check back. We have a first-come, first-served booking policy, but our pricing gets lower, the closer we are to an empty night.

Guest Access:
Guests enjoy private and exclusive access to the entire Naughty Dog Island.

You are also invited to explore the shared areas of 1 Big Sustainable Island from sunrise to sunset, a 1/2 mile paddle from Naughty Dog Island. You're welcome to take the early arrival ferry there, explore during the day, and check in at the appointed time. Or, you can paddle over on your own schedule.

ACTIVITIES:
There's lots to do on 1 Big Sustainable Island and (as has been the tradition for generations in the neighborhood) visitors are encouraged to stop by (so you might have some company from the neighborhood on the island during daylight -- after dark, however, the island is closed to the public). Activities in these shared areas include:

Hiking or walking on more than a mile of trails
Swimming
Swinging off the rope swing at the lake's edge
Watching the sunset from Sunset Rock
Resting in one of the hammocks sprinkled about the island
Fishing off the dock
Canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding
Sauna lake plunging

We are happy to provide safe luggage storage so you can enjoy free early arrival or free late departure. Guests can take advantage of the shared areas and activities either before check in or after check out.

The Neighborhood:
Annabessacook Lake is our 1400 acre backyard of clear water, good fishing, and great neighbors. Whether they are year-round residents, summer vacationers, or visitors, most folks you'll meet will tell you that they have been coming here since they were a kid.

Getting Around:
Getting to the Island: You’ve got check in options

CHECK IN YOURSELF by:
* Bringing your own boat or boat plane - we have a public boat launch, free parking for your rig at our place, and free island dock space for convenient boat tie-up.
* Paddling yourself - Take one of our canoes or kayaks and paddle the 30 minute trip across the lake to your stay. We can shuttle your gear on the next ferry if you want. Or,

CHECK IN WITH FERRY SERVICE:
Free ferry service to the island runs at:
* 9:45 Early Arrival - We’ll shuttle you to 1 Big Sustainable Island early and while your stay is being prepared, you can begin your “Island Time” early. We’ll safely stow your gear and let you know as soon as your accommodations are ready.

* 3pm and 5pm - With the standard check in ferry, we’ll move your crew and your gear to the island and help get you settled in.

Pre-arranged Special Ferry Service is available at other times for a $60 one-way fee during regular hours (between 8pm and 7am, the cost is $100 and a hot cup of coffee for the Boat Captain). We'll transport your gear and all your guests on this 10 minute private boat ride.

FREE PARKING: Park in our private parking area for free. Cart your gear to our shoreside dock to begin your "Island Time" journey.

Other Things to Note:
OUTHOUSAPHOBES: We're with you!
New guests might wonder about our island, off-the-grid bathrooms. Rest assured that our compost toilets are designed with usability in mind. They smell great!

We have all been to rural outhouses where this is not the case. It's the number 1 complaint (or is that #2?). Which is why, when we built each of our toilets facilities, we did something different. Through management of airflow, separation of liquids from solids, application of saw dust, and optimizing the force of gravity, we have a composting toilet system that has been in place for years with very little odor and maximum sanitation. So rest easy: if a member of your party is an "outhousaphobe", know that so are we!

- "Our stay was amazing! The location was beyond what I expected. It was so peaceful and relaxing Kent the property owner was fabulous, anything we needed or wanted he brought to us. I highly recommend this property and we can’t wait to go back!" - "This tiny island is the perfect place to take a break from the real world, disconnect, and connect with nature. Everything is exactly as advertised: the amenities, canoes, kayaks, shower. Kent was so helpful and brought fresh ice packs for our coolers, battery packs to charge our devices.. he’s a great host. The water around the island is shallow, our dogs loved walking around splashing in it. The ferry ride is easy and they have wheelbarrows to help load your stuff from the car to the ferry. We had the best time. I suggest bringing a lot of reading material so you can hang out on the hammock (one outside, one inside). There is a grill, a fire pit, rocking chairs. If you want to shower, you can pump the water for a few minutes and then clean up. We were so pleased with our stay that we will definitely be back! Thank you, Kent!"

Nice quiet spot" - "We had a great stay." - "This cabin was perfect in every way and the lake and property was amazing. Quite area, even felt safe enough not to lock the door when we went out." - "My husband and I stayed at Camp Axelrod for a week in August and we had the BEST time! From the start of the booking process Amy was very responsive and answered any and all questions we had. The camp/cabin is small but functional and comfortable and has a full bath with a tub which is sometimes hard to find in a camp. The yard is HUGE and beautiful! The beach area is excellent - sandy bottom and not mucky at all. We brought our pup and we tethered our floats to the dock and we floated around and relaxed every day, cooked on the grill and had a campfire in the fire pit a few nights. There’s a Hannaford’s about 10 minutes away for any groceries needed. Amy’s parents live next door and were very welcoming yet completely unobtrusive. We had plenty of privacy and would definitely book again!!"

Island Tree House Glamping
House
Monmouth, Maine, USA

Summary:
Rest easy in the Oaktagon Tree House of 1 Big Sustainable Island. This off-the-grid unique home is perched on a 14 acre island 1/2 mile from shore on Lake Annabessacook. The 900 sq. ft. octagonal home, built around a live Red Oak tree, is designed to make your stay comfortable in the midst of the forest canopy. Every treehouse island adventure includes enjoying the sights and sounds of Maine's natural beauty from a canoe or kayak: fresh air, clean water, and the songs of the loons.
Serving the naturally curious since 2015.

The Space:
The Oaktagon Tree House on 1 Big Sustainable Island is an octagonal home that gets its name from the live Red Oak tree (her name is Annie) that grows through the middle of the home. It's a great place to enjoy a family vacation, host a gathering, or just unplug from hustle and bustle. Step inside and you will be awestruck by the cedar panel aroma and the natural canopy sound track..

It's an open cathedral living/dining room with two fold out futon couches, a small breakfast table and a large dining table that seats six. Simple living is barely "roughing it" even though electricity is limited to the solar lighting system and battery powered devices. Plumbing is eco-unconventional.

COOKING OPTIONS: We make cooking easy, so pack heavy on food, but light on gear. A compact and complete kitchen has all the cooking utensils you will need to prepare meals -- just bring a cooler with your favorite food and we'll provide the kitchen to get the food prep and serving done. We supply: kitchen utensils, dishes, pots and pans, French press, coffee, tea, sugar, salt, pepper, and drinking water from our homestead well. You also can cook on the gas grill and stove on the back porch or the kitchen stove inside.

A small indoor 1/2 bath adds modern convenience to the experience. It is equipped with a composting toilet and hand sink. Take a hot shower (available during the non-freezing season) in a separate, shared building a few steps down the path.

Warm your hands and feet in front of the small woodstove - kindling, and infinite firewood come with the accommodations. (You can't visit Maine without at least seeing a woodstove!). Use it for cooking, creating some ambiance, or just taking the chill off a cool evening breeze.

Sleep soundly in the queen size comfy bed in the sleeping loft that is made up with extra blankets and a comforter. Two futon couches convert to a queen size and a full size bed in the living room. Another lounging option is to linger in the indoor hammock that you can attach to the tree in the living room. Island life is barely "roughing it", even though there is no grid-electricity and running water.

OUTSIDE THE OAKTAGON:
The large deck looks into the canopy and down to the dock. It is perfect for grilling and enjoying an outdoor meal, bird watching, and having a firefly counting contest. There is also an outdoor fire pit, complete with plenty of free firewood to enjoy a fire while enjoying an evening breeze.

The Oaktagon comes equipped with a few fishing poles and a small tackle box with an assortment of jigs, flies, and line. You are welcome to use them -- just be sure to get a fishing permit before you do so you can be on the right side of Maine's fishing laws. Annabessacook is known as a world class bass fishery -- we don't even have to stock 'em -- it's that good!

FREE STUFF: Every Maine Island adventure includes: Free island transportation, camp chairs, unlimited firewood, lantern, fire starter, matches, canoe or kayaks with life vests and gear. Explore Annabessacook Lake! On the island there is a rope swing, a mile of walking paths, benches and hammocks.

DOGS ON VACAY: We're dog people and the Oaktagon is pet-friendly for most pups. We screen all four legged visitors right after the reservation is made so that every island visitor is safe and prepared. If you can answer "YES" to each of our screening questions, your pup will be approved: Does your dog get along with other pups and humans? Is your dog’s history bite-free? Are you willing to keep your pup on leash during your stay? And, are you willing to be responsible for any damages your dog creates?

If there's a "NO" in there, DON'T WORRY! Check out our stay at Naughty Dog Island. It’s a private island with a log cabin where ANY dog - even unsociable ones - can be leash-free and worry-free.

Guests enjoy exclusive access to the Oaktagon Tree House where they can enjoy privacy and shared access to 1 Big Sustainable Island.

There's lots to do on 1 Big Sustainable Island and (as has been the tradition for generations in the neighborhood) visitors are encouraged to stop by (so expect some company from the neighborhood on the island during daylight -- after dark, however, the island is closed to the public). Activities in these shared areas include:

Hiking or walking on more than a mile of trails
Swimming
Swinging off the rope swing at the lake's edge
Cooking over an open fire
Watching the sunset from Sunset Rock
Resting in one of the hammocks sprinkled about the island
Fishing off the dock
Canoeing, Kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding
Sauna lake plunging.

We are happy to provide safe luggage storage so you can enjoy free early arrival or free late departure. Guests can take advantage of the shared areas and activities either before check in or after check out.

HOW PRIVATE IS THIS?
Each of our eco-island stays is designed with privacy in mind. There are 5 (soon to be 6) stays on 1 Big Sustainable Island. Unless you go looking for neighbors, you probably wouldn't know they are there. Every site has its own corner of the island. You might find folks in the public areas of the island (ie bathroom, boat rack, ferry ride, rope swing, and trails), but your sleeping and eating accommodations are private. Also know that our Island support team (if they're not already on island) they're a text away, if you need help.

The Neighborhood:
Annabessacook Lake is our 1400 acre backyard of clear water, good fishing, and great neighbors. Whether they are year-round residents, summer vacationers, or visitors, most folks you'll meet will tell you that they have been coming here since they were a kid.

Interaction with Guests:
Kent, a Registered Maine Guide and Commercial Boat Operator, and our Island Support Crew are available if needed - either on the island or a text message away.

From dawn to dusk, the island common areas receive visitors from the surrounding community who want to hike, swim, explore, or take the rope swing for a ride! These are our neighbors, friends, and are our helpful "security guards". At night, the island is quiet, peaceful, and restricted to overnight guests. Four (soon to be five) other sites are remotely located on the island and share some of the bathroom and shower facilities.

Guest Reviews:

- "We loved the peace and quiet!!! Such wonderful night skies!!!! We loved our cabin The Oaktagon!!!" - "The folks at 1BSI have thought of everything! It was so easy to enjoy being off grid with the many ingenious and creative ways they have designed and implemented comfort measures everywhere (solar and battery powered solutions, compost toilets, a hot showah, etc.). We thoroughly enjoyed the boats and hammocks on offer as well as the unlimited firewood. We are very much looking forward to returning again and again to explore the varied lodging options on the sweetest little island in Maine. Thank you to Kent and crew! Just pack your essentials and a good attitude! This is our second visit, but it definitely won’t be our last!" - "My wife and I spent some time here during our honeymoon and it surely made it a trip to remember. Everything about this experience was unique in its own regard and we left with plenty of awesome stories to tell. From the ferry to the furry welcoming committee, other kind guests we met staying on the island to the awesome and extremely helpful hosts, this was an incredible experience we recommend to anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Heck, we almost didn't want to write this review because we kind of wish it was our own little secret. Thank you for your hospitality Kent and Heather 😊"

HOW PRIVATE IS THIS?
Each of our eco-island stays is designed with privacy in mind. There are 5 (soon to be 6) stays on 1 Big Sustainable Island.

- "We had the most amazing time staying at the Nautilus. Kent was a generous, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic host who made sure that we had everything we needed for a successful getaway. We were even able to check-in early and enjoy the Nautilus for a few bonus hours. We are so grateful! This summer has been a fast-paced and hectic one, and this trip offered us the opportunity to slow down, look around, and be totally present against the most beautiful natural backdrop. We swam, canoed, grilled, played lots of cards, and had the most special time. We will be back, most definitely!"

Guest Reviews:

- "We had two adults, two teens and one very active dog. Guess who was NOT thrilled with the no-plumbing no-electricity situation?!? But that’s the point- reconnect with nature and slow down. We even got them off their phones for a while. (Although internet is strong! Totally remote workable) The island is beautiful and serene and clean. A great escape from the hustle and bustle of DC (where we live). We fished in the canoe, wandered around in the kayaks….. Our dog Archie roamed the island (he is very friendly and we got permission from every other guest before we let him loose!) and he truly felt like a king. We’ve never seen him so happy. Don’t let the no-plumbing deter you- it is more than liveable and actually a strong reminder of the excess we live in during our usual lives. It is open to the public and there are other guest houses so it’s not totally a “private” island but it was rare to see other people and when we did everyone was super nice. Kent and Heather are *GREAT* hosts— kind, welcoming, accommodating…. And will do everything to make your stay wonderful. Thank you!"

- "Very comfortable lake house with everything you could want in late summer in Maine. Property had 2 kayaks, a canoe, a stand up paddleboard, and 3 fishing poles (though one could use more line) and we definitely enjoyed launching all of the above and swimming from the dock. Back porch is screened which was very helpful for bugs and rooms had fans to keep things cool at night. Our family had a wonderful time and would definitely consider renting again."

Guest Reviews:

- "Could not have asked for a better way to end our vacation than a visit to this island. For being a sustainable space it does not lack in amenities conducive to comfort, and the setting is pristine. I had particular fondness for the rope swing!!" - "Our stay at Hemlock Haven, was nothing short of magical. My fiancé, Jess, and I spent three unforgettable nights immersed in nature’s beauty. We loved the peaceful ambiance, especially the crisp fall air and foggy mornings by the lake. The hammocks were a favorite spot for us to relax, read, and craft. As two chefs, we had a blast cooking over the fire and experimenting with the smoky flavors. Each evening, we cozied up to the sounds of the night, even catching a haunting chorus from coyotes (or perhaps wolves?) on one special night. Kent was an amazing and gracious host, sharing stories about the island and lake, offering advice on how to make the most of the island's amenities, and bringing an unmatched sense of humor to brighten our days. Hemlock Haven was the perfect place for us to reconnect with ourselves and each other. We can’t wait to return!"

Modern amenities include: a compost toilet, a hot shower (available during the non-freezing season) with towels and soap nearby, and a toasty wood stove with infinite firewood. Island life is barely "roughing it", even though we have battery-limited electricity and eco-unconventional plumbing.

Also, if you are looking for an exception to our minimum night requirements, please reach out.

COOKING OPTIONS: We make cooking is easy, so pack food, not gear. We supply: kitchen utensils, dishes, pots and pans, French press, coffee, tea, sugar, salt, pepper, and drinking water from our homestead well. You can cook on the propane grill and stove, or over an open fire.

FREE STUFF: Every Maine Island adventure includes: Free island transportation, camp chairs, unlimited firewood, lantern, fire starter, matches, canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddle boards with life vests and gear so you can explore Annabessacook Lake! On the island, there is a mile of walking paths, benches and "emergency" hammocks. This is FINE GLAMPING not hard camping - we do all the rustling for you.

DOGS ON VACAY: We're dog people and Loon Point is pet-friendly for most pups.

But if you're flexible on dates, flexible on which stay you want, and don't mind biting your nails while waiting for a price you like, then save the link and check back later. We have a first-come, first-served booking policy, but our pricing gets lower, the closer we are to an empty night.

Guest Access:
Guests enjoy exclusive access to Loon Point where they can enjoy privacy and shared access to 1 Big Sustainable Island.

Swimming
Cooking over an open fire
Watching the sunset from Sunset Rock
Resting in hammocks sprinkled about the island
Fishing off the dock
Canoeing, Kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding
Sauna lake plunging

We are happy to provide safe luggage storage so you can enjoy free early arrival or free late departure. Guests can take advantage of the shared areas and activities either before check in or after check out.

HOW PRIVATE IS THIS?
Each of our eco-island stays is designed with privacy in mind. There are 5 (soon to be 6) stays on 1 Big Sustainable Island. Unless you go looking for neighbors, you probably won't know they are there. Every site has its own corner of the island. You might see folks in the public areas of the island (ie bathroom, boat rack, ferry ride, rope swing, and trails), but your sleeping and eating accommodations are private. Also know that our Island support team (if they're not already on island) is a text away, if you need help.

* 3pm and 5pm - With the standard check in ferry, we’ll move your crew and your gear to the island and help get you settled in for FREE.

- "It is impossible to put into words how amazing my stay was at 1BSI. From arrival to departure, everything was perfect. Kent was responsive and brought me any supplies I may have needed. The island itself provided a great place to unwind, meditate, and relax. I even was able to work remotely on the island (thanks Kent for supplying rechargeable batteries daily). Cell service was strong. Highly recommend whether you’re looking for a remote place to work, a place to disconnect, or a mixture of both. Will definitely be coming back again."

- "Perfect lake front property quiet great place to relax and make memories. Loved it ❤️" - "We had a wonderful vacation at "Relax in Maine!" The house was clean and comfortable with all we needed for the week. The owner was very responsive to our questions. We highly recommend getting a tour by Captain Jim who lives on the lake, if available. Great fishing and relaxing. The water behind the house is a little weedy making it tough to swim but there is good swimming just a short kayak trip away. Overall this is a great place to stay!"

- "There aren't enough words to describe how wonderful the host and location and setting and amenities of this home are. Jenn is so caring and thoughtful. She went so far beyond preparing every detail she could think of. The hardest thing was figuring out where I wanted to relax between the hammock, the lounge chairs, the dock, the hot tub, the patio, or inside the house. The kayaks and paddle board were also such great activities to have as options. The lake is the perfect size... just small enough to keep big boats away and just big enough to have space to roam. This is a dream property with space and peace and activities... I wish I lived here. Can't wait to come back. Thank you so much, Jenn!"
