"Turnstone" was designed by renowned coastal architect and surfing filmmaker Paul Witzig and is a stunning house purposed designed and built for its wonderful location and beautifully fitted and furnished.

Turnstone sits on Porky Point King Island with close up views of the Southern swells. The sea is on three sides and all rooms have ocean views. See sea eagles from your bedroom.

It is a short drive to the new Ocean Dunes Golf Course and about 30 minutes to Cape Wickham.

The famed Cheese factory and Dairy is a kilometre away. The airport is ten minutes drive and Currie, where there are supermarkets and arrange of shops including a pharmacy and newsagent and Post office, is 20 minute drive. The local hospital and GP are also located in Currie.

The ocean right out front is full of crayfish and abalone. Many varieties of fish are caught right off the beach in front and of course all round the Island

For Bird lovers there is an abundance of life on the beach in front . The house is named after the Ruddy Turnstone which can be seen seasonally on Little Porky Beach. Pied Oyster catchers are a favourite. Sea Eagles are spectacular visitors

Winter guests can enjoy the ambience of the Jindara wood heater. Wood is supplied. Nobo electric wall heaters too warm up the double glazed house in winter. Big sliding doors and ceiling fans provide comfort on the warmest days of summer.

The house is designed for passive solar living and is cool in summer and warm in winter. There is a large ground mounted solar array that supplies the house with power backed up by the local grid. Water is heated via an Edwards solar heater with an electric booster for cloudy periods.

A spacious living dining and kitchen are tastefully furnished. For the traditionalists a wonderful new Esse wood stove provides an alternative to the modern electrical oven and induction cooktop that sits beside it. The kitchen is suited to the chef in the family with high quality equipment. We do our very best to keep the knives sharp!

A huge granite topped bench links to the solid wood dining table which can seat up to twelve

A big TV is now linked via digital signal to the Tasmanian network. A small DVD library is provide for entertainment. A Telstra modem provides basic internet services by wireless through the house

Three bedrooms are reached via a double glazed "breezeway "that connects the two wings of the house and guarantees absolute quiet even when others remain in the living area. The breezeway can be opened onto a deck with stunning views of the Southern Ocean and Little Porky Beach just 100 meters away .

The main bedroom has a spacious bathroom ensuite. The two other bedrooms share and equally nice bathroom that also serves as a laundry

Local cheese and bread on arrival, easy to locate key safe and a well appointed outstanding home in an absolutely stunning location. Our hosts David and Bianca were very easy to work with, we were able to access the house immediately we left the airport due to it being empty the previous evening and it was clean and well stocked with fire wood for the evenings. Access to the beach is simple and Turnstone is very central to amenities in Curry, the Airport, King Island Dairy etc. We spent 3 nights, 4 days exploring the island and happily still didn't get to everything. The house faces north to optimise solar power generation. Water is supplied from two sources: a natural spring 500m away and a rainwater tank. Natural gas heats hot water and the oven/stove. The system has been meticulously thought-out and designed for a low-touch and automated home system that requires minimal human involvement. Although off-grid, the modern comforts of living are available – reliable telstra phone reception, fast starlink internet, Apple TV, Netflix, Kayo and Binge.

This beautiful property stretches down to the water’s edge and encompasses 600m of coastline. With direct access to the beach from the property, it’s only a short walk on a designated walking track to cool-off (or brave the cold!). Along the coastline there are plentiful abalones and crayfish waiting to be caught and served up for your next meal (please be aware that a valid Tasmanian recreational sea fishing license is required which can be obtained online or from the local council building in Currie).

Southern rock lobsters and black and greenlip abalone are found here (a Tasmanian Recreational licence is required for those who wish to take on-shore). Buttons by the Beach is fully secluded and private, however it shares part of the driveway with Red Rock Hut - an eco-friendly tiny house - which sleeps up to 2 guests - located 500m away (if availability allows, both properties can be jointly rented, sleeping up to 9 people between the two). Spend your next King Island holiday in our spacious, renovated home. 85 Main St (on the corner of Main St and Arthur St) is conveniently located 1km from the heart of Currie.

Perfect for families and small groups, this home has room for relaxing or entertaining.
Snuggly sheets, soft pillows, fluffy towels, abundant hot water and plenty of heaters will keep you nice and comfortable during your stay.

Bigger clans will find plenty of beds for all. The house has 2 larger bedrooms with a king bed in one and 2 single beds in the other. The 2 smaller bedrooms have a single bed in each. There is a second king mattress in the sunroom. The mattresses range from firm to soft, to suit all tastes.

The kitchen is well appointed for those who love to cook. We make sure there is a variety of ingredients available for use, as well as milk and coffee pods. Coffee lovers can choose between pod coffee (using compostable pods) or get the cold drip coffee going.

The enormous sunroom is filled with natural light all day. There's room for meals, relaxing, exercising, games, music, arts and crafts or watching a movie. If the weather keeps you inside, the kids can literally climb the walls (sorry adults, the climbing wall is only for supervised kids to use).

The bathroom has bath and shower, with separate toilet. Washer and dryer are found in the laundry.

Outside the house you'll find a large trampoline in the middle of our 8 avocado trees. Veggie gardens and fruit trees provide seasonal ingredients to flavour your cooking, and a very cute greenhouse hosts some more tropical options. Please help yourself to whatever is ready.
Guests have the use of the whole property, with the exception of the garage which is used for storage and not suitable for guest use.
We don't mind if you smoke, we just request that you do it outside and dispose of butts in the bin.
If you can't find a recycling bin, don't worry, there isn't one. Unfortunately our tiny, remote community has limited recycling at this time.

Currie is a laid back town, generally very quiet even if you're on the main road as there is very little traffic. The locals are very friendly and will always give you a wave when they pass.
Our house is a short 1km walk from the Currie town centre and walking distance to Currie harbour, lighthouse, lookouts, big beach and little beach.
There is no public transport on King Island, so you will need to organise a hire car or tour if you want to explore more of this ruggedly beautiful island (and it's worth it!).
Ocean Dunes golf course and our local golfie are close by, but Cape Wickham Links is a fair drive to the top of the island.
Please note, only mobile phones on the Telstra network work on the island. If your phone is with Optus, Vodaphone etc, you will enjoy quiet time on the island as your phone will not work. There is no internet at the house, if you need the internet you can use it at KIRDO (King Island Regional Development Office) or the Library.
If you get hungry after 8pm, you might have to whip up a feast at home. Most restaurants stop serving food by 8, and there is no late night service station to buy essentials.
