A large deck extending from the second storey offers complete privacy, breath-taking panoramic views of the Southern Ocean, Currie Lighthouse and Golf Course, complete with a large hot-tub. "Turnstone" was designed by renowned coastal architect and surfing filmmaker Paul Witzig and is a stunning house purposed designed and built for its wonderful location and beautifully fitted and furnished.

Turnstone sits on Porky Point King Island with close up views of the Southern swells. The sea is on three sides and all rooms have ocean views. See sea eagles from your bedroom.

It is a short drive to the new Ocean Dunes Golf Course and about 30 minutes to Cape Wickham.

The famed Cheese factory and Dairy is a kilometre away. The airport is ten minutes drive and Currie, where there are supermarkets and arrange of shops including a pharmacy and newsagent and Post office, is 20 minute drive. The local hospital and GP are also located in Currie.

The ocean right out front is full of crayfish and abalone. Many varieties of fish are caught right off the beach in front and of course all round the Island

For Bird lovers there is an abundance of life on the beach in front . The house is named after the Ruddy Turnstone which can be seen seasonally on Little Porky Beach. Pied Oyster catchers are a favourite. Sea Eagles are spectacular visitors

Winter guests can enjoy the ambience of the Jindara wood heater. Wood is supplied. Nobo electric wall heaters too warm up the double glazed house in winter. Big sliding doors and ceiling fans provide comfort on the warmest days of summer.

The house is designed for passive solar living and is cool in summer and warm in winter. There is a large ground mounted solar array that supplies the house with power backed up by the local grid. Water is heated via an Edwards solar heater with an electric booster for cloudy periods.

A spacious living dining and kitchen are tastefully furnished. For the traditionalists a wonderful new Esse wood stove provides an alternative to the modern electrical oven and induction cooktop that sits beside it. The kitchen is suited to the chef in the family with high quality equipment. We do our very best to keep the knives sharp!

A huge granite topped bench links to the solid wood dining table which can seat up to twelve

A big TV is now linked via digital signal to the Tasmanian network. A small DVD library is provide for entertainment. A Telstra modem provides basic internet services by wireless through the house

Three bedrooms are reached via a double glazed "breezeway "that connects the two wings of the house and guarantees absolute quiet even when others remain in the living area. The breezeway can be opened onto a deck with stunning views of the Southern Ocean and Little Porky Beach just 100 meters away .

The main bedroom has a spacious bathroom ensuite. The two other bedrooms share and equally nice bathroom that also serves as a laundry

Local cheese and bread on arrival, easy to locate key safe and a well appointed outstanding home in an absolutely stunning location. Our hosts David and Bianca were very easy to work with, we were able to access the house immediately we left the airport due to it being empty the previous evening and it was clean and well stocked with fire wood for the evenings. Access to the beach is simple and Turnstone is very central to amenities in Curry, the Airport, King Island Dairy etc. We spent 3 nights, 4 days exploring the island and happily still didn't get to everything. The house faces north to optimise solar power generation. Water is supplied from two sources: a natural spring 500m away and a rainwater tank. Natural gas heats hot water and the oven/stove. The system has been meticulously thought-out and designed for a low-touch and automated home system that requires minimal human involvement. Although off-grid, the modern comforts of living are available – reliable telstra phone reception, fast starlink internet, Apple TV, Netflix, Kayo and Binge.

This beautiful property stretches down to the water’s edge and encompasses 600m of coastline. With direct access to the beach from the property, it’s only a short walk on a designated walking track to cool-off (or brave the cold!). Along the coastline there are plentiful abalones and crayfish waiting to be caught and served up for your next meal (please be aware that a valid Tasmanian recreational sea fishing license is required which can be obtained online or from the local council building in Currie).

Guests can enjoy private direct access to the beach with diving and snorkelling spots. Southern rock lobsters and black and greenlip abalone are found here (a Tasmanian Recreational licence is required for those who wish to take on-shore). Buttons by the Beach is fully secluded and private, however it shares part of the driveway with Red Rock Hut - an eco-friendly tiny house - which sleeps up to 2 guests - located 500m away (if availability allows, both properties can be jointly rented, sleeping up to 9 people between the two). Spend your next King Island holiday in our spacious, renovated home. 85 Main St (on the corner of Main St and Arthur St) is conveniently located 1km from the heart of Currie.

Perfect for families and small groups, this home has room for relaxing or entertaining.
Snuggly sheets, soft pillows, fluffy towels, abundant hot water and plenty of heaters will keep you nice and comfortable during your stay.

Bigger clans will find plenty of beds for all. The house has 2 larger bedrooms with a king bed in one and 2 single beds in the other. The 2 smaller bedrooms have a single bed in each. There is a second king mattress in the sunroom. The mattresses range from firm to soft, to suit all tastes.

The kitchen is well appointed for those who love to cook. We make sure there is a variety of ingredients available for use, as well as milk and coffee pods. Coffee lovers can choose between pod coffee (using compostable pods) or get the cold drip coffee going.

The enormous sunroom is filled with natural light all day. There's room for meals, relaxing, exercising, games, music, arts and crafts or watching a movie. If the weather keeps you inside, the kids can literally climb the walls (sorry adults, the climbing wall is only for supervised kids to use).

The bathroom has bath and shower, with separate toilet. Washer and dryer are found in the laundry.

Outside the house you'll find a large trampoline in the middle of our 8 avocado trees. Veggie gardens and fruit trees provide seasonal ingredients to flavour your cooking, and a very cute greenhouse hosts some more tropical options. Please help yourself to whatever is ready.
Guests have the use of the whole property, with the exception of the garage which is used for storage and not suitable for guest use.
We don't mind if you smoke, we just request that you do it outside and dispose of butts in the bin.
If you can't find a recycling bin, don't worry, there isn't one. Unfortunately our tiny, remote community has limited recycling at this time.

Currie is a laid back town, generally very quiet even if you're on the main road as there is very little traffic. The locals are very friendly and will always give you a wave when they pass.
Our house is a short 1km walk from the Currie town centre and walking distance to Currie harbour, lighthouse, lookouts, big beach and little beach.
There is no public transport on King Island, so you will need to organise a hire car or tour if you want to explore more of this ruggedly beautiful island (and it's worth it!).
Ocean Dunes golf course and our local golfie are close by, but Cape Wickham Links is a fair drive to the top of the island.

The kitchen is modern with a Smeg oven and induction cook top, Smeg fridge, microwave and Smeg appliances, Nespresso coffee machine, pots, pans and all utensils needed to make that perfect meal.
We also provide the essentials for breakfast like bread, butter, Vegemite, jam, peanut butter, a variety of tea, coffee, and sugar for your convenience.
The Baker’s old cast iron oven and the peel, which was last used in 1988, is showcased beneath reclaimed timber beams from an old Geelong pier.

Perfect for families and small groups, this home is an ideal base to enjoy your island getaway. Recently renovated, the home has Starlink internet, ample heating, abundant hot water, a stereo system and comfortable nooks throughout the house.

The space
The house consists of 2 large bedrooms with a king bed in one and 2 single beds in the other. 2 smaller bedrooms with a single bed in each. New mattresses and new super soft 2000 thread count bamboo sheets.
You'll be toasty warm with heat pump, bar and panel heaters throughout the house.
The kitchen is recently renovated and the laundry has a Bosch washer and dryer. The bathroom has a bath/shower with a separate toilet.
The new sunroom is huge - 12 x 5 meters, complete with a climbing wall, big screen TV with Netflix, recliner sofa, books, games and art supplies. The climbing wall has a king bed mattress as a crash pad, and we've put some spare foam mattresses in the sunroom, so we can accommodate larger groups if requested.
There's an expanding dining table which can seat 8. The well stocked kitchen has everything you need to cook up a storm, complete with a pod coffee machine and cold drip coffee setup.

This two bedroom apartment has lots of character with plantation shutters and with one of the bedrooms looking into the garden. 1 bedroom has a king bed which can be split into two long singles and the other bedroom has a queen bed.

The base rate for 2 guests is based on using one bedroom. Should you wish to use the second bedroom there is an extra cost of $60 for entire stay. We must be advised prior to arrival so room can be made up.

There are two lounge rooms, one is the entrance with daybed, television, heat pump/air-conditioning & the main living room with Tv, and Netflix, Stan available, so you can have endless movie viewing! A luxurious moody bathroom with iconic Aesop bathroom products also awaits, for those wanting to relax and soothe the muscles from a busy day sight seeing or a day of golfing. These products are something you find in only the best of places.

A weeks notice is required preferably. She will deliver them to us and we will set up a dinner table prior to your arrival or whilst you are out. Please ask for menu from us, if interested.

Oleadas is a wonderful restaurant a 3 minutes walk, reservations a month prior are highly recommended as it’s only small and extremely popular.
Legs wine & pizza bar is an absolute must, just delicious and all the sourdough is made lovingly by Ian.

Situated on 32 acres of oceanfront property on the west coast of King Island, Buttons by the Beach is a secluded, sustainable and fully off-grid beach house with uninterrupted views of the Southern Ocean and rugged coastline from almost every room. Sleeping up to six guests, Buttons features a fully equipped entertainer’s kitchen, a free-weights gym, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a quiet office. This coastal retreat offers all the modern comforts, while feeling a world away.

The space
The house has two outdoor entertaining areas: one facing north overlooking the ocean and one indoors which is protected from the elements and complete with large dining table, fireplace, BBQ and vegetable/herb garden (season-dependent).

The open-plan kitchen is thoughtfully equipped for entertaining and the pantry is well-stocked with essentials (cereal, spreads, pasta, sauces, oils etc). A mini-barista coffee machine, toaster, blender are provided for convenience. The dining table seats eight and has hosted many gatherings among friends.

At the heart of the home, you'll find the warm and inviting living area, offering awe-inspiring views of King Island's rugged west coast and the untamed beauty of the Southern Ocean. With the waves rolling in, no day or hour is ever the same; some days it’s calm and flat like a lake and other days the roaring 40’s makes it one of the most treacherous seas on the planet. The indoor fireplace is as rustic as it gets; as the logs crackle in the evening, you'll discover a sense of unparalleled relaxation. Cosy up in a snug blanket, with a glass of wine and a King Island dairy cheese platter, all while indulging in a movie - an experience that promises pure delight.

All three bedrooms have views of the ocean and high quality bedding is provided. The quiet office has a futon sofa bed which can accommodate an additional guest (which can be made up on request at no additional charge).
 
The gym in the garage is available for those who want to get their sweat on during their stay. There is a squat rack, competition barbell, Olympic weight plates, inclined bench, TRX suspension, stretch bands, dumbbells, plyo box, kettlebells, shakti mat, yoga mats, skipping ropes, battle ropes and more. Beach towels, fishing rods, a beach tent and 2 surfboards are also available for guests’ enjoyment at the beach. 

Buttons by the Beach is 100% off-grid and has zero reliance on mains infrastructure. The house uses a combination of solar and wind to generate power which is stored in high-grade gel batteries. The house faces north to optimise solar power generation. Water is supplied from two sources: a natural spring 500m away and a rainwater tank. Natural gas heats hot water and the oven/stove. The system has been meticulously thought-out and designed for a low-touch and automated home system that requires minimal human involvement. Although off-grid, the modern comforts of living are available – reliable telstra phone reception, fast starlink internet, Apple TV, Netflix, Kayo and Binge.

This beautiful property stretches down to the water’s edge and encompasses 600m of coastline. With direct access to the beach from the property, it’s only a short walk on a designated walking track to cool-off (or brave the cold!) Along the coastline there are plentiful abalones and crayfish waiting to be caught and served up for your next meal (please be aware that a valid Tasmanian recreational sea fishing license is required which can be obtained online or from the local council building in Currie). Buttons by the Beach has everything you need to retreat from the world, entertain with friends and relax in this special part of Australia. Buttons by the Beach is located on 32 acres of ocean-front property on the west coast of King Island. While remote, it is only a short flight from Melbourne or mainland Tasmania. Buttons by the Beach is located 20 minutes from King Island airport, 25 minutes from the main township of Currie and 20 minutes from Cape Wickham Golf Course. 

Guests can enjoy private direct access to the beach with diving and snorkelling spots. Southern rock lobsters and black and greenlip abalone are found here (a Tasmanian Recreational licence is required for those who wish to take on-shore). 

Buttons by the Beach is fully secluded and private, however it shares part of the driveway with Red Rock Hut - an eco-friendly tiny house - which sleeps up to 2 guests - located 500m away (if availability allows, both properties can be jointly rented, sleeping up to 9 people between the two).

Other things to note
Bedroom #4 is an office with a sofa futon bed which sleeps one additional guest (futon bed can be made up on request at no additional charge). The offices space is located off of the primary bedroom (door between bedroom and office).

Binoculars, although at times not needed, are provided to get a closer view, during the early hours, of the fishing boats pulling up their nets or lobster pots directly in front of the property.

Sea Eagles and other birdlife can be seen hovering or swooping for their catch right in front of your accommodation. At dusk the wallabies gather around each of the homes amusing our guests who at times are seen jumping for joy from one end of the house to the other to get a closer look at these wonderful and innocent creatures.

From the board walk you have access to the sunny garden area and bush track leading down to Currie harbour, beach, picnic grounds and free BBQ's.

The three separate areas GILLIGANS, STARLIGHT and SKIPPERS have their very own private and lockable access but all three can be opened up into one large home. There are many car parking areas for guests.

LAYOUT
4 Bedrooms and 3 bathrooms are on the upper level with kitchen, dining, living area and a powder room are located downstairs with access to the outdoor deck area, hot tub, outdoor shower and sauna.

All bedrooms can sleep either king beds or two king singles in each room.
The master bedroom is spacious with an ensuite, wardrobe space and stunning ocean views. The second and third bedrooms are ample sized also with wardrobe space and ocean views. These two bedrooms share a bathroom.
Our fourth bedroom is quite small, it is spacious enough with two single beds. Luggage to be stored in the mudroom. This smaller bedroom however has access to its own bathroom across the hallway.

Guest access
Guests will have access and exclusive use of the entire property.

The property is located by Little Porky Beach for which you can walk to in under 100 steps from the back doors. The coastline from here is lovely to trek along, by going north you can walk along the point to get to the main Porky Beach.

Car hire is essential for exploring the island. The main town Currie is 10 minutes drive. The property is private and secure and can only be accessed through double gates via a code. We have plenty of space for parking.

Our accommodation rate is based on a twin share per room. For bookings involving four people, two bedrooms will be allocated. Any additional bedrooms or bathrooms used beyond the initial booking will incur an extra guest rate of $250.00 per room per night. This fee covers additional cleaning and linen expenses. The maximum occupancy for this property is eight guests, ensuring an intimate and comfortable experience for all. If the property is left beyond a reasonable clean standard we may be required to charge guests an additional cleaning fee based on $60/hr to cover the additional cleaning costs required.
