Travelling by car to and from Quorn at night is dicey due to kangaroos - heaps sighted on and close to the road - Comfort and furnishing of the cabin is superb but let down by lack of services - it is normal to assume a TV will be in the room. We were disturbed during the first night by loud noises outside the bedroom - can only assume it was wild-life but nothing sighted out if window - limited lighting and absolutely pitch black at night - all good second night. Park is set up for camping and has excellent Camp Kitchen and bush trails - we appreciate some relish in the remoteness and disconnection from mainstream services but a bit too remote for us - I stress that the Cabin was superbly furnished and equipped - "

McKinley's Rest was built in around 1880 and was part of Quorn's famous Foster's retailing empire.[The historic Emporium supplied everything from farm machinery to glassware and haberdashery and closed in 2001].The house was fully renovated and upgraded in 2007 and is very comfortably and tastefully decorated with quality furnishings for home away from home accommodation. It is environmentally friendly, utilising it's own plentiful rainwater and has great insulation and reverse cycle air-conditioning, making it very comfortable in summer or winter.

The Savings Bank of South Australia (SBSA) building dates back to the early 1890's when it was built as a saddlery. Later converted into a shop and private Quorn residence by Mr J Rock, the Savings Bank of South Australia purchased the building in 1909 for £1,100 and opened a branch in the important northern centre. The SBSA later became the State Bank of South Australia and then a Bank SA branch before it closed on 13th September 1997. Fittings and furniture in the banking chamber were panelled with polished cedar and the counter was edged in brass, with an iron foot-rail mounted on the customer side of the counter. Gas was used to light the premises.
The SBSA building was subsequently renovated to become comfortable spacious holiday accommodation, centrally located at the gateway to the central and northern Flinders Ranges.

The SBSA is located within easy walking distance of the towns pubs, supermarket, bookshop, art galleries, craft shops, laundromat, post office, newsagent, chemists. The Flinders Ranges Visitor Information Centre is located in the Pichi Richi Railway Station and the new Silo art show is displayed nightly on the adjacent Quorn station silos. Both are a short walk from the SBSA.

In 1878 the The Pichi Richi Railway began as the Port Augusta and Government Gums Railway. The Quorn railway station became the cross-roads station when you travelled north to south, or east to west across Australia. Make sure you allow enough time to walk around the town and see the beautiful historic buildings and learn about this small famous town by following the Quorn Heritage Walk. During the Second World War, a great number of Australian troops passed through Quorn heading north and south. The Quorn Country Women's Association - CWA served over one million meals to troops passing through by rail. For more than 40 years Quorn has been the home of the Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society.

The local produce and craft market is held on the last Sunday each month in the Quorn Town Hall, just one block's walk from the SBSA. Here you will find locally grown food like figs, apricots, nuts, (depending on the seasons' produce) chutneys, jams, sauces and some unique craft gifts.

In Quorn town there is the lovely arid flora "Powell Gardens" at the eastern end of First Street which is well worth a visit. Here you can see hundreds of different flora which exists in this climate of extremes. A few years ago the Flinders Ranges Council renovated the "Quorn and District War Memorial Swimming Pool" so if you would like a swim please check the opening hours at the FR VIC, as opening times vary according to season and temperature.

Within the original RW Foster's Great Northern Emporium, (also in First Street) is the original Fosters Emporium where history in retail shopping just stopped.

The SBSA provides the perfect base from which to enjoy the range of activities in the majestic Flinders Ranges.

The Flinders Ranges extends in a north-south direction for about 430km from near Port Pirie to Mount Hopeless in South Australia. The ranges are composed of folded and faulted sediments of the Adelaide Geosyncline. This very thick sequence of sediments were deposited in a large basin on the edge of the ancient continent of Rodinia about 840 million years ago. During the Cambrian period approximately 540 million years ago, the area underwent folding, buckling and faulting into a large mountain range, the eroded stumps of which can today be seen as the Mount Lofty and Flinders Ranges. Before erosion, the ranges are though to have been up to 40,000 feet high.

From the SBSA it's an easy drive to Warren Gorge on the sealed road; or take some day trips to explore the Kanyaka ruins, Brachina Gorge, Wilpena Pound, Blinman, Hawker, Cradock (renowned for sunsets, pub food and art on display). Other interesting towns include Hammond, Bruce, Melrose, Moockra Tower and Laura.

Wilpena Pound is a world class attraction - a large, sickle-shaped, natural amphitheatre covering nearly 80 square kilometres, containing the range's highest peak, St Mary Peak (1,170m (3,840ft)) and adjoining the Flinders Ranges National Park. Wilpena Pound is well worth a scenic flight available from many surrounding points. The northern ranges host the Arkaroola wilderness sanctuary and the Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park. The central part of the ranges are notable for the Pichi Richi scenic railway and the southern ranges feature Mount Remarkable National Park and Port Germein gorge.

Fossils are found in the Adelaide Geosyncline - those discovered in the Ediacara Hills of the northern Flinders in 1946 are of worldwide significance for being some of the oldest examples of fossilized animal life ever found. They date from the very end of the Neoproterozoic, and in 2004 the location gave its name to the last geological period of the era, the Ediacaran. In 2018 two new fossils were discovered in the Flinders and named after Barrack Obama and Sir David Attenborough.

The flora of the Flinders Ranges consist of species adapted to a semi-arid environment such as sugar gum, cypress-pine, mallee and black oak. Moister areas near Wilpena Pound support grevilleas, guinea flowers, Liliaceae and ferns. Reeds and sedges grow near permanent water sources such as springs and waterholes.

Since the eradication of dingos and the establishment of permanent waterholes for stock, the numbers of red kangaroos, western grey kangaroos and euros in the Flinders Ranges have increased. The yellow-footed rock-wallaby, which neared extinction after the arrival of Europeans due to hunting and predation by foxes, has now stabilized. Other marsupials include dunnarts and planigales. Insectivorous bats make up a significant proportion of mammals in the area.

There are a large number of bird species including parrots, galahs, emus, the wedge-tailed eagle and small numbers of water birds. Reptiles include goannas, snakes, dragon lizards, skinks and geckos. The streambank froglet is an endemic amphibian.

Birdsong Gardens was named due to the abundant bird life that come to visit. We also have lizards, chickens , Meowmeaow the Cat and Zeus the Dog. We are situated on the South side of Quorn, walking distance to the Grocery Store, Post Office, Pubs, Railway Station, Silo Light Show, Cafes and more. There is a private garage available to store your vehicle depending on height. I now have a TV which is connected to Wifi The Kitchenette has a Microwave, Induction Hot Plate and Griller, Toaster, etc, but no hot water, a Plumber has been spoken to and am waiting for his arrival. The Shower does have hot water! The new Toilet door doesnt have a handle as yet as I need to paint the door, once I have a few days without bookings I can try and get this done.

Hello! Im Clarinda, from NZ originally, but have lived in Australia for over 20 years, both in Sydney and Melbourne. Looking for some time off the grid, this cottage is the place to stay. Simple cottage with no frills, the perfect spot to connect with nature, or visit Melrose & ride your bikes on the mountain tracks, hike the Heyson trail, ride the Pichi Richi railway, hike Alligator Gorge, and much more.
This cottage is a working cottage that we use when we are busy on the property, shearing time, crutching etc. It is a very hidden stunning property, with beautiful 400-year-old gum trees, a dam close by.

The cottage is solid concrete, with 2 main bedrooms, which are accessed off the dining & kitchen with only one access door to both rooms. The first room has 2 single beds, and the main room has a double bed. The other bedroom is outside off the verandah (we call the sleep-out), but still connected to the house. All clean sheets and pillows will be supplied.

The small kitchen is well-equipped and comprises 2 large fridges and an old vintage fridge used only for drinks or a freezer. The kitchen has 2 gas stoves\ovens.

The dining area has a massive original wood table that our shearing teams sit around and seats up to 12 people. The kitchen is fitted with a brand-new split system for your comfort.

A washing machine is available for use.

The cottage has all been recently painted and new tiled floors throughout the cottage.

Some firewood will be provided for an outdoor fire, upon request.

PLEASE NOTE This property is private. To access this property, there is a 1km of dirt road that can be bumpy, dusty, muddy or slippery, depending on the time of the year and road grading schedule. The upside is, you have no neighbours, can have a campfire, (But not in Fire Ban seasons usually October to April) can enjoy walks up the hill to see the incredible sunsets and sunrises and even see kangaroos roaming the property and listen to the kookaburras in the old gum trees.

As this is a working Merino property, we have two working kelpies who call this home. Billy, our tan kelpie, has a habit of waking up early and you will typically be greeted by working Kelpies Morton & Billy, on arrival. At night Billy does tend to bark —he’s simply letting us know he’s ready to get to work, or there are kangaroos visiting!

GUEST ACCESS:You drive up our private driveway 1km off the highway Come to our main house and we will direct you to the cottage 100m away from our main house. The road is dirt, therefore if it is wet it can be slippery.

Please be mindful this is a working Merino property and work sheds are strictly out of bounds.

ADDITIONAL SERVICE ON REQUEST:**We can also offer an additional tour up the top of the hills for an additional cost or a champagne & nibbles tour of the magnificent scenic 380 deg view of the Flinders Rangers and Spencer Gulf - please let us know if this is of interest to you as we can not always offer this during busy periods.

In summer & drought, this area is dry & rarely green. Water is a valuable resource.

The space
Kookaburra Creek is 10 kms north of Melrose, situated at the base of Mt Remarkable.
Our privately owned/family run Retreat is set on 80 acres of picturesque bushland. How's that for a backyard!
Abundant in wildlife, with endless natural beauty. Explore with the kids till your heart's content!
There are easy, short walking trails on our property. The Melrose to Wilmington Rail Trail bike track passes the property, giving a pleasant easy ride into town. There are also a network of Walking and Bike Trails in the National Park, right next door!
Our Retreat offers a variety of unique and creative accommodation options available for couples, families or groups. We can sleep up to 20 people, if all our accommodation is booked, more if sofa beds are used or you bring along your camper vans and tents! Accommodation ranges from this 2 Bedroom House, a Hut, Bedford Bus, 2 Storey Stone Workshop, a Loft and a fun little 2 Storey Stone Cubby House which is powered! The kids love it!!
Bush camping available also, a distance away from the accommodation.

Guests can feel free to explore our 80acre property.
There are a couple easy, short walks, ranging from 30-45mins return.

There is direct access to the Willowie Forest next door. This is part of the Mt Remarkable Nat Pk. Hiking options and also 20kms worth of single track mountain bike trails.

Guests can have an outdoor fire in the fire pit right next to the House.
(To be used during non Fire-Ban season only. 15th April- 1st Nov)
Please BYO campfire wood. (Weather permitting only.)

We are members of The Wildlife Land Trust. Being part of this organisation means we are trying to conserve our bush property and by doing so, creating a safe habitat for the wildlife. We ask that you don’t collect fire wood from our property or neighbouring National Park.
Chainsaws are prohibited.
We supply fire wood for the inside fires.
This wood is not to be used for campfires.

Other things to note
Rates are family friendly. Up to 4 children are free, under the age of 16yrs.
(Add them as infants when checking price)
Linen and bedding can be supplied for 1 Double, and up to 4 singles.
(Or 2 doubles and 2 singles)
Please let us know if you can supply some of your own linen and bedding. This will help us reduce our water use. Kookaburra Creek relies on it's own water catchment, and after a few drought years we've had to use water sparingly. We'd really appreciate it if it's possible.
The double beds have a single bed above them, and a sofa bed in the lounge room.
So plenty of beds to choose from. (All beds are very comfortable:)
Please note there is a TV which has DVD/Blu-ray and USB port for hard drives, but no TV channels.

The Retreat is accessible to most types of 2WD vehicles if driven with care.
The road is un-sealed, a little rough and stony in places.
Please drive at 15kms or less along the road, as there are many kangaroos and euros along the way.

The Workshop is a beautifully designed 2 story, rustic stone building.
Fully self-contained with well equiped kitchen.
The jarrah staircase with natural acacia railing leads to the upstairs lounge room.
French doors open to the balcony.
Relax and take in the pleasant beauty of the bush.
The Loft Bedroom joins onto the Workshop, accessed under the verandah.
Please note that there is a stairway to the double bed. The Loft steps are steep, so may not suit elderly people.

The space

The Loft Bedroom has a mezzanine double bed up steep steps and a single bed below. There are 2 sofa beds upstairs in the Workshop which can be used for sleeping.

The Workshop & Loft joins the neighboring Kookaburra House accommodation with a spacious undercover BBQ, gathering area.
This is a shared space.
The Workshop/Loft can be booked together with The Kookaburra House for groups. It's a great space for 2-3 families.

The road is a little stony in places. Please drive at 15kms or less along the road, as there are many kangaroos along the way.

The Wilmington to Melrose Rail Trail passes the property and will take you 10km into our nearest town of Melrose or 10km to Wilmington.

Other things to note
The Workshop/Loft is quite a unique setup, so here's some info about this space to check if it's suitable for you...
The Workshop and Loft bedroom are rented out together.
The Loft is a separate room but joint onto the Workshop. It has a double bed up quite steep steps on mezzanine floor, and a single bed below at floor level.
Please note that the steps going to the Mezzanine double bed are steep. It is not suitable for young children or elderly people to sleep up there.
There's not a great deal of space but an extra mattress can be laid on the floor next to the single bed if needed.(Ground level.)
The Workshop is a 2 storey building, kitchen/dining below and lounge room and balcony above.
The lounge room upstairs has 2 double size sofa beds. These can be used for sleeping, but we don't recommend for young children to sleep upstairs because of the stairway.
Please note: at this stage there are no gates on the stairways, so that you're aware with children.
The toilet/shower and Laundry facility is right next to the Workshop. It is a shared facility with our Bus accommodation guests, and possible campers staying.
The key for the private toilet/shower at toilet block is hanging on the notice board in the Workshop.
There is one toilet/shower that is locked and kept for Workshop guests only.
I clean the toilet/shower block every day when it is shared.

Enjoy this spacious 6-bedroom home with amazing views of the Flinders Ranges. Great for families and friends to gather and experience a country house and atmosphere. Wilmington is 17ks to the south and has plenty to offer with Alligator Gorge, scenic lookouts, interesting shops, groceries, and a hotel. Bring your bike and ride along the old railway track to Willowie forest and on into Melrose. Pichi Richi railway, iconic shops are 20 ks north in Quorn. The Heyson and Mawson trails are nearby.

Other things to note
Dirt road access, approx. 17.5 Kms. not regularly graded.
Beware of Kangaroos and wildlife when travelling in the country.

Pergola area contains a 4-burner flat hotplate BBQ and a Pot belly fireplace.
Firewood, split redgum can be supplied, $30 per wheelbarrow load. Message us as will need to organise with the supplier.
