- "Our family of four had a great time in Coja. The house has a good layout, plenty of space including two outside terraces overlooking the river. Everything was clean, working and full of character which for us is the most important aspect. Just a few minutes from a lovely river beach with cafes. The town is also nearby, no need to drive, everything extremely pleasant. The neighbours were very nice and welcoming too. There is a road behind the house, but traffic noise not a problem as it is not busy. This is not a 5 star residence but it is homely, cheerful, comfortable, clean and relaxing and we felt it was very good value. The river beach is one of the best in the area although the house is also a good base to explore further afield. We had a marvellous holiday. "

The main bedroom has a double bed and the second bedroom has two single beds, there is a separate shower room. The cottage was so well appointed that I challenge anyone to find something that the owner did not provide. There were lots of personal touches around the house too which make it feel like a true home-from-home. Things like food basics in the cupboards was also very welcoming. The house is clean and tidy and everything is beautifully presented. Within walking distance is a lovely restaurant and river-side bar and over the bridge there are plenty of shops and small supermarkets. There is a market here too (details are in the house notes from Jane.) The small square in Coja is a lovely place to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine and a coffee or a glass of Portuguese wine. My partner and I stayed here around 3 weeks in November and the weather was surprisingly mild during the days when the sun was out. To keep warm in the evenings we had plenty of logs provided for the woodburner upstairs. I thoroughly recommend the place and hope to return one day. Thanks Jane for everything."

The river beach at Folques is less than 2kms away and the Rio Alva is approx. 5kms away. There are also many popular river beaches within a 10 km radius including Secarias and Coja where you can hire pedaloes and canoes in the summer months.
Arganil is the closest town with shops, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes etc.
The ancient university city of Coimbra is 45kms from here.
Approx. 60 kms away is the Serra de Estrela is the highest mountain in Portugal with spectacular views and ski slopes in the winter.

For those of you who have stayed at Casa de Xisto and those who are thinking of staying there I would like to let you know that after the terrible fires in our area the house remains undamaged! The land below the garden was burnt down to the bottom of the valley but there are already seeds growing through the ashes and we are beginning our replanting project with fruit trees, vines and olives. Please do not give up on the house as more than ever we need people to come and visit the area and bring with them some trade to the area. The calendar has been blocked untill the beginning of December but for anyone interested in staying there please get in touch.

Things to do: Most visitors to the Arganil area come for the peace and quiet and the relaxing atmosphere. You can stay by the house taking in the wonderful views whilst topping up your tan or discover some of the lovely river beaches along the Rio Alva where you can swim or just laze to your hearts content. An information booklet is in the house with more details. Canoes and pedaloes are for hire at some of these river beaches. The nearest river beach is at Folques 3kms from the house with a picnic area and parking.

If you want to go further afield there are more things to explore. The ancient Roman town of Conimbriga is approx. 1hrs drive. These are some of the best preserved Roman ruins in Portugal and there is a very interesting museum with artefacts found on site and in the surrounding area.

If you want a day at the seaside then the popular resorts of Figueira de Foz and Mira with golden beaches are only 1 hr drive from Bocado. Figuiera is a large town with everything for the family, Mira is smaller but still has fish restaurants and shops as well as a small lagoon.

Both Arganil and Coja have a selection of restaurants serving both local and more international dishes. Most menus will have a selection of chicken, pork and fish dishes which can be washed down with the local Dao wines.

The Portuguese wines are very good and of course the heavier Vinho de Porto or Port wine is a great way to finish a meal. Try the chilled white Port as an aperitif. If you are barbecuing you could try the Vinho Verde as an accompaniment this slightly sparkling wine is very refreshing served well chilled!

There are some wine producers in the area that will give a short tour of their caves and provide a wine tasting, you may need to book. The Quinta de Cabriz is one of these and there is also an excellent restaurant on site.

Besides the hall there is a spacious bathroom and two bedrooms. One room has a double bed, the other has two bunk beds.

- "Sadly the weather was cold and wet but our dear host did everything in her power to overcome our discomfort. Sadly the wood burning stove smoked, the new induction hobs had no pans that worked. However on the plus side the place is fabulous had the weather been good the pool would have been great it was lovely. We were taken to see our host’s cheese making facility which was fascinating. Her generosity and help were way beyond what one would normally expect . We ate very well on both her recommendations. The Gite was delightful if a little bohemian.
