Because the townhouse is in a residential area, there are no pubs, bars, or restaurants nearby. We had to drive to Ennis "downtown" to get dinner. Also, be aware that your GPS may lead you astray, as it did us. We ended up at the train station, which has a similar address. Luckily, the townhouse is only about a half mile from the train station. Overall, we enjoyed our one night stay."

The Friary at the bottom of Abbey Street was founded by the O’Briens in the 13th century. Many of its original features survive. This restored 19th Century cottage enjoys a wonderful location on the coast road overlooking Galway Bay and the Aran Islands and beside a beautiful sandy beach. It has a beautiful stone walled garden and ample parking.

The half door entrance leads to a hallway from which there is access to the dining room, sitting room, kitchen, 2 downstairs bedrooms and main bathroom. Upstairs there are 3 further bedrooms and an additional WC.

This cottage has a large well equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washer/dryer, large fridge/freezer, electric cooker, etc. There is a large dining room table and chairs overlooking the patio area and the Atlantic ocean. This is a wonderful location to watch the sun go down over Galway Bay. There is also a separate dining room with a large hand cut stone fireplace. This is one of two fireplaces in the cottage, the other is in the sitting room. There is a complementary fire starter pack and bag of turf provided. Additionally there is oil fired central heating throughout the cottage.
The bedrooms are very spacious with good lighting and ample storage space. There are two bedroom downstairs (one single room and the other with a set of bunk beds) as is the main bathroom. The ceiling has oak beams, home to a collection of antique jugs. The dresser houses a selection of fine china, linen and silver cutlery for your entertaining needs. The welcoming entrance porch, adjacent to the kitchen, provides storage for everyday equipment and is decorated with lovely pictures and mirrors themed around domestic birds. Water is sourced from a natural spring well for your good health.

SUN ROOM:
The spacious sun-room has a gothic theme with high ceilings, larch beams with wrought iron. The once-off dining table and tall chairs were designed and carefully crafted by a cabinet maker using burned elm wood. This is a very relaxing room in which to sit and watch the swallows in summer or the doves hover over the lake. In the morning, rabbits and hares wander close to the house;- undisturbed nature at your window cill.

LOUNGE:
The elegant, cosy lounge is decorated with Victorian-style furniture, ‘his and her’ chairs, wing backs and chaise lounge. The limestone fireplace with its large wood-burning stove is certainly a pleasure to sit beside on a winter’s evening just listening to the antique wall clock ticking. The front entrance porch off the lounge provides spectacular views of the lake and mountain.

BEDROOM1:
The pitch-pine stairs leading from this room brings you to the master-bedroom with its large antique- inlaid bed and a beautiful large deep bath provides relaxation in the tastefully decorated bathroom.

BEDROOM 2:
The twin-bedded room on this floor is airy and comfortable with beautiful views of garden and countryside.

BEDROOM 3:
The single downstairs en suite bedroom is a cosy retreat freshly decorated with toilet de Joui fabric. This theme follows through to the large en suite bathroom.

GARDEN
The extensive garden has many facets, lavender-scented beds, rock roses, mature trees, scree beds, vegetable plots, fruit trees and a variety of berries for winter preserves.

The three cut-stone patios provide seating for different times of the day, here you can sip your wine/morning coffee in privacy, watch the horse’s graze, cattle resting or hares and foxes in the early morning dew, the natural music of the song-birds and the domestic birds as they roam the garden freely.

And the roosters sound wonderful in the morning. Her two dogs are so well trained and are a pleasure to be around. Our dear host has a wonderful eye for details and her house and it furnishings, antiques and ambience, made us feel as if we were living in the 1920's, like in the movies, but with all the convenience and amenities of today. A real hand has to go out for her forethought and design that she put into constructing a new house that had such an old world feel. It was a privilege to stay their for a week (I wish it could have been longer), and given the opportunity, we would stay there again in a heartbeat! We cannot say enough about how we appreciated the area, but especially about making all our new friends! Thank you so much"

There are eight bedrooms in all and each of them is ensuite.There are three king bedrooms on both the second and third floors (so 6 king bedrooms in all) and the 4th floor has one room with two single beds and the other with a double bed – ideal for children which share a bathroom between.Two of the king bedrooms have a small sitting area and TV.There is a beautiful stand-alone bath on each of the floors – a real treat to enjoy during your stay.

Although there are 8 bedrooms, we have set the ideal number of people to 12 as that is the number that could most comfortably stay. Larger groups could also rent the adjoining almost identical house alongside.

The Courtyard is shared among the houses and offers plenty of parking right outside your door.At night time the houses are lit up spectacularly.To the rear is the beautifully landscaped shared walled garden area.Filled with flowers and seating here and there, this would be a wonderful place to escape with a good book or newspaper.

This beautiful cosy one bedroom cottage is the perfect blend of old meets new. It retains all the traditional features and open brickwork of the building but it has been transformed and modernised to make this charming retreat perfect for one or two people.

The vibrant coloured half door gives an indication of the style and beauty of this property before you even go inside. Our beautiful limestone home is located on “The Wild Atlantic Way” 6 kilometers from Ballyvaughan Village on our family farm. Our home is in the Burren National Park.
Our home has its own fresh mountain spring water that is thirst quenching and refreshing and flows down from the springs all year round.
Gleninagh Pier is across the road, a fabulous place for swimming and diving, when the tide is out a beautiful sandy area to enjoy.
Our home is ideally situated for fishing, local walks and trails.
We have oil fired hot water and central heating in the house. Our utility room has a washing machine, dryer and freezer.
The main bathroom has an electric shower, so is hot instantly. (No having to wait!
For the 2 power showers upstairs the water needs to be heated for about half an hour before you use them. The immersion switch is on the wall in the utility/laundry room (If you leave the switch to sink it will heat faster). Leave the power switch to the left on. Press the boost 2 times for ¼ hour, 3 times for ½ hour and so on, it automatically turns off afterwards.
The heating switch/timer for the radiators is in the utility/laundry room above the washing machine. Leave the power switch on the left on. Press the boost 2 times for ¼ hour, 3 times for ½ hour and so on, it automatically turns off afterwards.

Our home has mountain spring water. For drinking use the cold tap at the kitchen sink as it comes direct from the spring.

We have a lovely solid fuel stove in the sitting room. We will leave some turf by the fire. The stove gets really hot so use the glove to open and close the door. There is a silver bin outside the back door for ashes.
There are some games and playing cards in the press in the sitting room.
The washing machine and dryer are in the utility room, if using the dryer could you please put the hose out the window.
There is a travel cot, iron, clothes airer, ironing board in the press at the bottom of the stairs.
There is a first aid kit in the glass cabinet in the kitchen.
There is extra towels and toilet rolls in the press at the bottom of the stairs.
The red bucket in the utility room is for recycling.
The grey bin is for all other material.

There is a Farmers Market in Ballyvaughan every Saturday morning from 10am – 2pm during May – October.

Our lovely host, Marion, shared the rich history of the barricks with us and we were amazed at how much work went into restoring the property. We hired Damien (the chef that was offered to us), to prepare a meal the night of our arrival and his Irish Stew was delicious! He also stocked the kitchen with our requested items, arranged for golf for the guys and took them fishing (he's a fishing guide too!). We loved the local Power's Pub and highly recommend Vesuvio, the take-away fish & chips place just a short walk away. Even though it is in a remote and rural setting, it is ideally situated close to the Burren, the Wild Atlantic Way, and equal distance to Galway to the north and the Dingle Peninsula to the south. THE SANCTUARY - Main House

The Sanctuary estate consists of a renovated 100-year old cottage that is available for Air BnB guests. There are also separate outbuildings (stables) that have been converted into three self-contained studios next door to each other (Studios 1, 2, and 3). Studio 1 is also available for Air BnB guests (please see other listing for The Sanctuary - Studio 1: Self-Catering for 2). The host stays from time to time in Studio 3.

The space
In the main house, there is a kitchen, a dining room (that can accommodate 12 people), a large sitting room with home bar, a master bedroom with ensuite, and a separate guest toilet and shower room on the ground floor. Upstairs, you will find four bedrooms and the main bathroom with shower.

The Sanctuary estate, formerly a donkey sanctuary, sits on an elevated five-acre site in a peaceful, rural area surrounded by Gortacurka (Irish for Field of the Oats) Forestry. It has views in the distance of Mullaghmore Hill, the Burren Hills, Corofin village, Lake Inchiquin, and Ballycullinan Lake. One can relax to the sounds of the birds in the forest, hear the wind in the trees, or listen to the babbling stream that flows through the estate especially after a rain shower. There is very little light pollution here so on a clear night, the stars are quite spectacular.

Other things to note
In the kitchen, there is an oil-fired Aga Cooker with 4 ovens and 3 hot plates with an integrated gas hob and electric oven module that provides heat 24/7. It creates a cosy, warm atmosphere in the kitchen and home and is very welcoming when you return from a day's outing.

Bedroom 1 (downstairs) has an ensuite.

A starter pack of timber logs with kindling and firefighters is available for the wood-burning stove in the large sitting room.

The large sitting room also has a home bar with bar stools for entertaining.

There is a stream flowing through the land so this property would not be suitable for small kids.

As part of the house goes back 100 years, the ground floor isn't on one level. There is a step from the entrance lobby into the kitchen, another step from the kitchen into Bedroom 1 (downstairs), and a small step on the upstairs landing that deserve due care and attention. Your host will point these out to you at check-in.

Ample parking is available on site.

Some of the surrounding land is being landscaped in preparation to plant grass and Irish wildflowers but no work will be done during your stay.

Two outdoor cats live on the estate so unfortunately, pets are not allowed. These cats are not allowed into the house but they may occasionally peep in the windows and doors to say hello to you!
