Town: The small country town of Gatehouse of Fleet lies on the Solway Firth, in Dumfries and Galloway. The town offers Mill on the Fleet, a visitor centre in a former bobbin mill, which tells the tale of Gatehouse’s cotton spinning days. Also in the town are a small supermarket, chemist, bank, Post Office, two book/gift shops, a kilt making centre, two cafes and four pubs.
- "This property is in a brilliant spot, right in the centre of the village which is great for local amenities, yet in a semi rural location . It is really well equipped, neat and clean." - "Good size property in a great central location with local shop & several pubs in walking distance. Great park across the road if you have kids or taking a dog with you. On a personal level the negatives for me was the wooden stairs from back door to garden which are a bit steep as I have arthritis in my hips. Also the people living next door were rather noisy with a particular habit of slamming the iron front gate. These are just minor personal niggles so they wouldn't prevent me from recommending Laurelbank if you're looking for a good spot to base yourself for visiting the Galloway Forest or the beaches around the Doorway area."

It is set in a quiet street in Gatehouse of Fleet, a delightful village in this beautiful part of south west Scotland. Once known locally as the ‘Glasgow of the South’, the village used to have a thriving industry with cotton mills, shipbuilding, a brewery and its own port. Nowadays, its rich past can only be seen in the street names and inside the former textile mill, The Mill on the Fleet, which now houses exhibitions. There are many attractions in and around the town including the Mill on the Fleet Visitor Centre, Cardoness Castle and the popular Laggan Outdoor Activity Centre, home to one of Europe’s longest zip wires. For a more laid back day, there are delightful beaches just a few minutes’ drive away, including Mossyard and Carrick. The area has numerous walks available, from scenic coastal walks to forest trails. Together with sailing, swimming, riding, fishing, golf, boat trips and water sports close by, there is something for everyone. The area is warmed by the Gulf Stream, and many beautiful gardens flourish here, including Threave Gardens (National Trust). Granary is close to the Galloway Forest Park, the first Dark Sky Park in Europe, and being central to five of the 7Stanes, at Kirroughtree Forest and Dalbeattie Forest, it is a popular location for cyclists and mountain bikers. Kirroughtree has some of the best technical single track mountain bike trails in Scotland. Only a short drive away is Kirkcudbright, known as ‘the artists’ town’, which attracts visitors throughout the year who are drawn by the harbour, the historic high street and the diverse range of annual events and visitor attractions. The popular programme of summer festivities culminates with a spectacular tattoo - an event not to be missed! Shop 100 yards, pub and restaurant 20 yards.

The property was formerly a Forestry Commission Office and has been tastefully converted to a very attractive, cosy two double bed-roomed holiday home. This high standard innovative convertion was completed in August 2008. The main bedroom has en-suite bathroom with king size bed and the efficient underfloor heating throughout the property provides all year round comfort. The property is extremely light and airy as it benifits from south and west facing patio doors, with feature light shafts in the kitchen and living room. There is a modern well fitted kitchen with slate floor, where you can sit at the breakfast bar enjoying a wonderful view through the trees to the Galloway Hills or maybe spot a red squirrel leaping from tree to tree. As well as Red Squirrels there is Roe Deer and an abundance of bird life surrounding The Shack. During your stay we will provide a bag of feed for children (or adults) to feed the birds and squirrels.
In february the woods surrounding the Shack are covered with a carpet of snowdrops, making this a particular beautiful time of year to visit.
We have just returned this week, the snowdrops are wonderful and the wildlife is extremely busy. I have downloaded 2 short videos one of a woodpecker feeding with finches flying around behind and a red squirrel running down the tree next to the feeding table.

Silver Birch is a spacious timber clad lodge with breath taking views across the hills towards the coast offering modern, luxurious accommodation all on one level for 4. The lodge is located just under 2 miles from the picturesque small rural town of Gatehouse of Fleet which provides numerous opportunities for eating out - we highly recommend The Galloway Lodge for breakfast or lunch and The Masonic offers great food and beer! small shops, a delightful and testing nine hole golf course, tennis courts, river and loch fishing. As the area is situated within the Galloway Forest Park, nominated Britain's first Dark Sky Park, a clear night will present amazing opportunities for star gazing with the naked eye.

From the lodge there are extensive walks and mountain bike rides over hills, past lochs, through forestry and down the valley.
