Spectacular setting for wildlife, this cottage is a gem, with its own tranquil gardens and woodland on a hillside near Cardoness Castle, with walks directly from the door. Little Boreland, is full of character and is an ideal holiday retreat for all ages from which to explore the beautiful, unspoilt Fleet Valley National Scenic Area. It is within a short stroll, 1/2 a mile, of the conservation town of Gatehouse of Fleet, with shops, cafés, restaurants, local arts and crafts, and the Mill on the Fleet Visitor Centre.

In 1951, Glencairn Balfour Paul saw the house from the road and fell in love with it. His brother Ian, a keen bird watcher and elder of the Kirk, lived there for twenty years from 1990, following which other family members now maintain the house and its grounds through holiday lets. It has caught the eye of many passing artists who have depicted the house and adjoining wood, including early 20th-century local artists such as A R Sturrock and A M Hotchkis. The Balfour Pauls found Little Boreland just magical.

There are sandy beaches and rocky coves along the coast while the hillier countryside is good for walking. Nearby the Galloway Forest Park, known for its starlit dark skies, has excellent cycle paths. There is so much to see and do with castles, prehistoric sites and specialist gardens, thanks to Galloway’s mild climate. Activities for children include Cocobean at Tywnholm, Loch Ken Activity Centre, Red Kites feeding station at Laurieston. There are ample opportunities for fishing, horse riding and golf. Nearby are many attractive towns including Kirkcudbright, the artists’ town, offering boat trips and art and craft shops; Castle Douglas, Scotland’s food town with many specialist shops and nearby Threave Castle and Gardens; Wigtown, Scotland’s national book town, and Creetown featuring the Gem Rock Museum.

The house features a very large modern kitchen with seating for 8 around the dining table and a large central kitchen island. This room is a great place to catch up after a day out. There is access from the kitchen directly onto a Raised Timber Deck with external dining and seating. Integrated appliances are available and a second fridge freezer is in the garage for when you need that extra cold store.

There were also some essentials in the kitchen for us - tea, coffee and dishwasher tablets for instance. The pool table and fire in the lounge make for a cosy evening in. The location is great for exploring the local area and the host has a guide of their local favourites you can use. It’s close to the A75 but not so close you can hear traffic, and a short drive from Castle Douglas and many nice walks and beaches. We really enjoyed our stay and will certainly be back!"

A large, welcoming house with a very relaxed atmosphere set in a stunning location in the popular sailing village of Kippford on the Solway coast, an ideal base for multi-generation family holidays.

Kippford itself has a small sandy beach and two pubs, both of which serve food. There are both forest and coastal walks available from the door, with sailing, golf and fishing all available nearby. The Byre @ Camp Douglas is a lovely and inviting barn conversion set around a courtyard and boasting picturesque views over Loch Ken. Furnished and beautifully decorated it is a large, bright and airy house with lots of space for all the family to enjoy. On the ground floor there is a fully fitted kitchen which has all the modern appliances you would need and the advantage of space for the large dining table so the cook need not miss out on all the fun. The bright and airy lounge has lovely views over Loch Ken and for the chillier evenings a large gas fired wood burning stove. Upstairs the three bedrooms are spacious, the master with an en-suite bathroom and there is a modern family bathroom.

Whilst The Byre @ Camp Douglas shares a communal courtyard to the front there is a private and fully enclosed rear garden with a summerhouse – the perfect place to sit and watch the sun go down over Loch Ken. The Byre @ Camp Douglas is set in a quiet countryside location which makes the most of the views yet is only a 5 minute drive from the small market town of Castle Douglas with its array of small unique shops selling local produce and quality gifts, some excellent restaurants and larger supermarket shopping.

If you want to explore more of this beautiful area then you couldn’t be better placed than at The Byre @ Camp Douglas as attractions are plentiful, from beautiful sandy beaches to dramatic cliff tops. With sailing, swimming, horse riding, fishing, golf and water sports all close by, there is something for everyone. On your doorstep is the Red Kite Feeding Station where the red kites are fed daily at 2pm, it really is a joy to watch. There are many beautiful gardens to visit including National Trust Threave Garden. Close to the Galloway Forest Park, home to the first Dark Sky Park in Europe, and central to five of the 7Stanes, at Kirroughtree Forest and Dalbeattie Forest, it is a popular location for cyclists and mountain bikers. Kirroughtree has some of the best technical single track mountain bike trails in Scotland. Beach 16 miles. Pub and restaurant 2¾ miles.

Ornockenoch House makes the perfect setting for a family get together with the house easily catering for groups of 14 and ensures peace and privacy while only being a mile or so from Gatehouse of Fleet. The house has views over Ornockenoch Loch to the rolling Galloway hills and the spacious accommodation has been refurbished and equipped to the highest of standards to ensure that you will have a memorable stay in this charming country house. The house is on the owner’s hill farm and estate ensuring tranquil surroundings with walks from the door.

The comfortable traditional country house style accommodation includes a spacious sitting room and a superb dining room which opens in to a large modern kitchen; the principal rooms all have views of the loch. The accommodation layout is such that there is plenty of room for everyone to find their own space. The ground floor single bedroom can be used by a Nanny, Housekeeper or Chef. If catering for a special event is required the owner is able to assist with arrangements.

Whilst the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park is on the doorstep the location of the house means that you can enjoy the stars from the house itself. The Park does however provide superb opportunities for enjoying all outdoor pursuits such as walking, mountain biking and wonderful wildlife including Red Deer, Red Kite, if lucky a Golden Eagle, Kingfishers, Otters and many more. The Solway coast has many quiet and peaceful beaches together with all the water sports that you would expect and nearby Loch Ken is a popular centre for water sports including sailing and course fishing. Galloway Activity Centre offers both land and water based activities on Loch Ken, booking is advisable.

Gatehouse of Fleet is a popular town with several pubs and hotels offering good food along with smaller cafes and restaurants. The Town’s annual Gala day is not to be missed and always has a good variety of displays for all tastes.

Scotland’s history and heritage can be explored with visits to many local sites including Cardoness Castle on the outskirts of Gatehouse of Fleet, Dumfries House near Cummnock or following the various Rabbie Burns trails. It is also worth taking time to explore the Galloway towns which include Kirkcudbright on the Dee Estuary with it’s artist links to the “Glasgow Boys and Girls” painting schools or a visit to Castle Douglas with it’s busy high street filled with galleries and independent shops.
