- "Kelsey House exceeded our expectations in every way! As soon as we saw our first sunset from the amazing porch we immediately felt the stress of "real life" ebbing away.Lazy breakfasts and long cocktail hours/dinner on the porch were the highlight of each day, as was walking our dogs down Adams Landing Road. There was plenty to do when we left the property, which had everything you could possibly need in a lake house- high quality bedding, towels, kitchen and bathroom supplies etc. We do want to mention that when VRBO's advertise "well-stocked" it often means "cluttered" and this was anything but the case. Jack very kindly welcomed our dogs and had a nice bed, bowls and dog towels (it was raining) on hand We had a lovely time learning about the history of the property and meeting Jack's son but, as others have said, we had complete privacy. Honestly can't think of any flaws and hope to be back! Thank you, Jack."

ARTICLE FROM THE BOSTON GLOBE
One downshifts upon arrival at the two-town island community of South Hero and Grand Isle on Lake Champlain. There are speed zones to observe, certainly, but also many bicyclists to respect, for this is a cycling Eden. But mostly you slow down psychologically, almost automatically. That’s because the island has all the soothing attributes of any seashore community but with one major difference: Instead of ocean expanse, one gazes across water at summits, the Green Mountains over which the sun rises, the Adirondacks over which it sets. There are winding country roads to explore; and farmers’ markets, orchards, produce kiosks (honor system), ice cream stands, art galleries, and even a winery that beckon you to stop. Grand Isle is full of speed bumps, all welcome.

DINE
For fine dining in a sporty atmosphere, try the Blue Paddle Bistro (316 US Route 2, South Hero, entrees $15 to $28, open for dinners Tuesday-Sunday, brunches Sundays on holiday weekends. For terrific hand-cut fries and other fried foods stop at Kim’s Snack Bar (corner of Routes 314 and 2, Grand Isle, no phone or website). Two spots for formal dining require a short drive across a drawbridge to another island, North Hero, to Shore Acres Inn & Restaurant (237 Shore Acres Drive, entrees $18.95-$37.95) and The North Hero House Inn & Restaurant (3643 Route 2, entrees $22-$27), both offering lakeside views.

DURING THE DAY
Bikers can enjoy the views along Grand Isle. While vacationing at the lakeshore it’s hard not to think occasionally of fish or other critters of the deep. For a sense of what’s below Champlain’s surface, stop by the visitor center at the Ed Weed Fish Culture Station, a state hatchery (14 Bell Hill Road, Grand Isle, open 8-4 daily, including holidays, for self-guided tours). Visitors can view Champlain’s most common fish species, feed fingerlings in their tanks, and stroll along the banks of a pond, occasionally catching a glimpse of osprey and other lakeshore birds. If art’s your thing, check out Grand Isle Art Works (259 Route 2, Grand Isle, open Monday-Saturday 10-4, but until 8 on Thursday, Sunday 9-3; café hours Tuesday-Saturday 10-3, dinners Thursday evenings), a gallery in a 1797 farmhouse featuring the works of some 75 Vermont painters and crafts people. For a dessert or to spoil your appetite, stop at Vermont Nut Free Chocolates (10 Island Circle, Grand Isle) for specialty chocolates made without nuts or peanuts, a special blessing for anyone with nut allergies. And for some history? Consider one of the oldest log cabins in North America, the Hyde Log Cabin, a state historic site (Route 2, Grand Isle, just north of the intersection with Hyde Road, open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 11-5). The small cabin, with furnishings, was built around 1783 by a Revolutionary War veteran, Jedediah Hyde, whose descendants lived in the structure over the course of 150 years. And, finally, all followers of the apple-a-day adage, should consider Hackett’s Orchard (86 South St South Hero) or Allenholm Farm (111 South St South Hero, offering a “petting paddock” of farm animals for kids) Both orchards also sell varieties of berries, fruits and vegetables, plus ice cream, cider, maple syrup and other Vermont food specialties. Hackett’s Orchard in South Hero offers fresh produce.

For renting bikes; North Hero House or Hero's Landing.
Also LOCAL MOTION OF VT in Burlington

DURING THE NIGHT
Face it, after a day at the beach or hours of bicycling, you may not be in the mood for a raucous nightlife — which is good because all options on the island are low key. One might visit to Snow Farm Vineyard (190 West Shore Road, South Hero) on an evening of tastings or musical performances. For frothy Vermont brews, and a chance to watch the Red Sox on the flat-screen, try McKee’s Island Pub & Pizza (513 Route 2, South Hero) McKee’s, offering subs, pasta, and salads, is also a good place to take the family for dinner. And if it’s really the simplest of pleasures you’re pursuing, you can stand in line at Seb’s Snack Bar (295 Route 2, South Hero), an island institution, for a close-up view of Americana and a “creemee,” ice cream cone, shake, or float.

ARTICLE IN THE US NEWS-2021
There are few places in the U.S. where you can island hop via car. The Lake Champlain Islands in Vermont is one of those places. These five islands, which sit on 120-mile-long Lake Champlain, are all connected via U.S. Route 2 (also known as the Roosevelt Highway). The islands are home to beaches like Alburgh Dunes State Park and White’s Beach, farms (including Snow Farm Vineyard and Hackett’s Orchard) and plenty of lovely trails. The bike-friendly Island Line Trail is a particularly scenic pathway that crosses the lake from Causeway Park on mainland Vermont to South Hero Island. There are some hotels on the islands, and camping is available at Grand Isle State Park. Plus, since Burlington is less than 24 miles southeast of South Hero Island, you can always book accommodations there.

- "This property is a clean, comfortable, rustic camp right on the lake. The view is beautiful and the property is quiet. The neighbors are very close so don’t plan on any kind of party. We will probably rent the property again. Charming" - "The view is unbeatable. Totally gorgeous all the time. The cabin is clean and accurately described in the listing. The beach is rocky, as is the lake, so bring water shoes! Even in July, the cabin was cool and comfortable. No ACs in the cabin, but we wouldn't have used them even if there were any. We did use fans just to pull in some extra cool breezes, since we love cold for sleeping. Kitchen and bathroom were well equipped. Beds were comfortable and clean. Overall BEAUTIFUL location!"

The owner was communicative, accommodating and provided a cozy stay much to the satisfaction of our crew." - "We absolutely loved our time staying at Jodi’s property! It was comfortable with everything we needed to have a relaxing time right on the lake!! The dock was perfect for fishing, boating and sunset watching. The camp fire circle had seating for 6 and is surrounded by beautiful flowers! The yard was big enough for our pup to play fetch. And the living room looks over the lake so it was perfect for wet mornings of lounging with coffee watching the birds! This place had everything you could want or need! Jodi was a fabulous host - very responsive with great suggestions on places to dine and things to do. We’re already planning our return visit in the fall!"

- "Cabin is even nicer than it shows online. It's well provisioned and the owners are two doors down and very responsive. Stephanie and Peter patiently answered every question quickly and went above and beyond with our traffic-delayed late arrival. The kitchen is stocked so you could easily stay awhile and the towels are plentiful. The cabin was spotless and the grounds are well-maintained. The lake is literally steps from the front door so all you really want to do is hang out on the porch and feast your eyes on the water. There are beautiful roads to walk just 1/2 mile from the cabin, if you want to see the lake from other views. The mix of residential and agriculture under a big, starry sky invite longer stays than we had. This is a quiet find in an unbelievable setting and the hosts couldn't be nicer."

We loved our stay and thanks to a great host!" - "A cozy wooden cabin with views of the lake and easy access to all the attractions of the upper and lower islands. - "We really enjoyed our stay at this house. The grounds and view were fantastic. There was some issues with kitchen light, but most likely only needed a new bulb. There were plenty of fans available and the weather was beautiful, so that was nice to be able to have a cool breeze. Burlington was only 35 minutes and offers some great dining and shops. The ferry to Plattsburg was costly, but OK. We'd rent here again." - "A wonderful, relaxing, place to stay with family. The views from the lake were stunning! The front porch had lots of rocking chairs and adirondack chairs to watch the sunset and sailboats go by. It even had steps going down to the lake and a dock to sit on and/or get in the water. "

Guest Reviews:

- "We enjoyed a lovely quiet stay at Vancie's cottage. This is a summer camp, which is exactly what we expected and were very pleased with the experience. We arrived to a clean camp with lots of extras left behind by others, oil, zip locks that sort of thing. We cooked most meals there on the very clean and working gas grill, the kitchen had plenty of dishes for all of our needs, although we used paper when possible since there is no dishwasher (we knew this). The kitchen was clean, but it is a camp kitchen and quite small, it does have all you need, but not a lot of counter space. It still worked out well for us. The porch is big with plenty of room for all six of us to relax and play cards, the lake is right there with a nice clean shale beach (water shoes helpful) and dock. The dock wasn't very useful since it was so high out of the water. The water temps were very comfortable, we paddle boarded, kayaked and just had a blast playing in the water. "

We took the house for our daughters graduation and we wanted a place to host a cookout for her friends. Badmitten and kayaking. Worked out great. Only nit is that you are encouraged not to drink the water out of the tap so bringing bottled water is a part of the deal."
