Great if like us you love wild NZ but are not campers. The house is warm (good heating) and full of character. Private except for cheeky weka in the garden, sounds of the sea and birds. Magic." - "Best accommondation ever. It was so so nice there! We really enjoyed it there from the first moment on! It is in such a good place, directly on the beach where you are all by your own most of the time. And its very quite there. It has a very nice garden and the house is in such a good state and really well maintained. Its very comfort with all the nice wood and all the windows. Its very bright. The people on the campingground, which is a 10 minute walk away from the house, are very friendly. First we were in a little shock because the fridge in the kitchen is very small. But there is a second big one in another room, behind the house. We didnt see the note at the fridge AT first. In this extra room is also a washing machine. The kitchen has everything you needed, there is also a Weber Grill outside. The bathroom is a little bit small and a little old. But it was ok! The sofas in the livingroom are not that comfortable, but are okay. But the beds are comfortable! From the bedrooms and the livingroom out you have a really great view at the garden and the beach! Everything was very clean! It was awesome there!"

This whare is set up as a simple yet cosy bach. There are no modern cons but it has everything you need if you are truly looking for a quiet, relaxing get away. No WIFI sorry, we like the fact you can temporarily switch off!
It hosts its very own little blue penguins who live right underneath the kitchen floor, who we have never bothered to try and remove as they are 1. a protected species and 2. we like them :) Hence another factor that makes this place unique.
It is only metres away from the beach and you can lay in bed at night and listen to the tide sweep in and out. Make your morning coffee and walk 20 steps to the beach whilst the kids play with the sand and stones before breakfast.
5 mins drive or a 15 minute walk will take you to The Charming Creek Walkway. Within 40 mins of the prestine bush walk you will find a swingbridge that overlooks the most amazing waterfall. Believe it or not, this used to be a railway for loggers!
Take the kids to the local dairy to get an ice-cream and a classic $1 mixture then walk across the road to the Ngakawau River where you can have a go at whitebaiting of (in the season Sept/Oct) or just try fishing for herrings off the bridge with a simple casting rod. (Bring your 0wn rod). Providing the sea is calm it also a great place to surfcast or set your contiki (if you have one).
You can get takeaways from the local Ngakawau pub or head north 12kms to The Mokihinui Tavern. 5 kms South in Granity there is a coffee kart and a local Craft shop full of amazing designs from talented creators from the whole community. Across the road there is the local OP shop usually open from 1:30pm. Ask if the local nursery is open and you may be able to get yourself some local native plants to take home. Check some of the old historical buildings such as The Lyric Theatre which still runs theatre plays. Take a drive 8 kms up the Millerton Hill and explore the Millertons tracks. Walk up the steps to the old bathhouse and get a sense of the old miners who used to trample this walk everyday rain, fog , snow or sunshine. You can also explore the Denniston Hill ( if you have read the Denniston Rose then this will give you an appreciation of the tough conditions of mining and pioneering of the past). Alot of the Northern area is great for biking and exploring. Our bach is also on route to the newly famous bike trail The Old Ghost Road Track. If its raining (as it does on the coast) there is always the indoor pools and sports centre including Gym and squash courts in Westport. And the Westport Coal Musuem. Great areas for hunting and a good central place for exploring Karamea and the beginning of the Heapy Track in one day. How bout hunting and fishing

- "This home is beautifully decorated, very warm and comfortable. Private space with a hot tub on the deck that was fantastic day or night. Everything you need is in this home and the host was very helpful. Would highly recommend." - "This property was absolutely stunning - a recent build - Joanne and Steve have created a paradise in Karamea at the end of the road (literally). I just wished we had stayed longer here and had more time to enjoy the house which had been thoughtfully planned and decorated throughout and was really just amazing. It was a great end to our trip up the West Coast of the South Island and one day I plan to bring my wife back here!"

- "Just as expected having been there before..really enjoy the area and did some walks" - "Great spot, but one large pot to cook pasta for 4 would have been even better! We did arrive late so our own fault a bit! Lovely comfy beds, and great showers thanks!" - "Beautiful location and friendly staff, reccomended" - "Located in a beautiful spot, the Treehouse provides spacious sleeping for 4 people. The heaters provided adequate warmth and the views lovely once the rain had gone. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room, but would be good with a little fridge upstairs too. The new toilet, shower and laundry block is great. And the outdoor dining and brazier area look good, although we didn’t use it."
