- "This place was awesome. It has some unbelievable sunrises, sunsets & views. If you love nature & peaceful surroundings look no further." - "We loved our stay at the Lake View Domes. Marie allowed all the privacy we needed but was a friendly face if we had questions or needed help. The views in the day were outstanding and always changing with the weather. The patio had seating to gaze across the valley towards Abiquiu and the lake. It was all we really needed! Our dog Odie was welcomed with open arms and hiking was available from the property. Perfect place for quiet and contemplation, we would go back in a heartbeat! Thank you Marie and Cindy."

- "What a great place. While it is small it does not feel cramped. There were ample supplies and it was very clean. Listening to the Elk trumpet while resting by the fire was the highlight of our visit. This cabin was a welcoming and restful stay after our long day at Chaco Canyon. " - "Wished we could stay longer. Quiet cozy cabin." - "Perfect spot for us after a day of exploring in and near Chaco Canyon, host provided excellent directions for access. It was too late and too chilly for us to enjoy the outdoor seating area, but we made good use of the plentiful dry firewood (don't laugh, we're from the Pacific Northwest where dry firewood can be a challenge!) to have a cozy fire in the woodstove. Impressive internet speed. We appreciated the bottled water and coffee/tea/cocoa selection!"

Full luxury in breathtaking natural beauty. Remote and private. So quiet you can hear your heart beat. At night, no city lights disturb your view of the star-studded sky.
From this 1,475 square foot Casita, you'll enjoy panoramic 360-degree views: Abiquiu Lake, miles of mesas, rolling hills, and the magnificent red cliffs surrounding the famous Ghost Ranch. To the south you'll see the 10,000-foot mountain known as El Pedernal, which Georgia O'Keefe made famous in her paintings, along with much of the near landscape.
Our Casita was built in 2008, and designed by a local architect in a southwestern yet modern style. It's fully furnished for comfort. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances, including a Bosch gas stove with heavy gauge grills for those who really love to cook.
Check out the Master bathroom: you can choose between a slate shower or a deep soaking tub to soothe your body after an invigorating hike in the nearby Jemez Mountains. Besides the 2 bedrooms, each with Queen beds, there is a Full Size Air Mattress RAISED Inflatable Bed with Built-in High Capacity Airbed Pump and Fitted Sheets with Bed Skirt for use in the Great Room overlooking the lake.

- "A wonderful spot, quiet , dark and so peaceful. Everyone loved waking up to the sunrise over the mountains and the sun hitting the red rock of Ghost Ranch. We took some wonderful walks and loved the cows and the coyotes." - "We were looking for a place to stay for a couple of nights after days of snow adventure at the Taos Ski Valley. My husband and I stumbled upon Vista de Lago and the pictures really captivated us. We've rented cabins and condos before but never tried a house surrounded by serene nature, away from the crowd! We had the 3 kids (teenagers) with us, and our Goldendoodle. The drive from Taos was already scenic but we were in awe as soon as we entered the Abiquiu lake area. It was a sunny afternoon when we arrived and everyone took their phones right away to take pictures of the hills and views of the lake! My 2 girls started collecting rocks and making rock formations! Even our dog was inspecting the rocks and the new terrain, running around freely! At night we were worried the kids will be bored because there was no cable, but who would need cable?!! After dinner we just chilled and chatted for hours, then watched a movie together from the DVD selection available. In the morning we watched the sunrise together and hiked around the area after a good breakfast. It was chilly in the morning but eventually warmed up to become an absolute perfect day. We were a bit worried about cayotes (from another review) and heard a couple of howling and bear-like sounds at night but realized that the community was fenced so should be safe. We were still careful though during our strolls as we had our dog with us unleashed. On the day of our checkout it started snowing and it was another sight to enjoy! Thanks to Larry for giving us this experience and sharing their beautiful house! He was quick to respond and gave us all needed info. We definitely recommend this vacation home and hope to return soon!"

Please see important NOTE at the end of this description regarding RV's and other recreation vehicles.
'It was all so far away--there was quiet and an untouched feel to the country and I could work as I pleased.' Georgia O'Keeffe
Serenity abounds at Casa Bonita, where it is easy to see why this country had such a profound impact on Georgia O'Keeffe. Light and open, this modern adobe rests on ten acres overlooking Abiquiu Lake towards Ghost Ranch, with gorgeous views in all directions. Picture windows throughout the living area allow you to appreciate the vistas from the comfort of the well-appointed interior. The covered portales (covered porches) are ideal for enjoying the tranquility of the environment. Admire the view of the Pedernal from the portale off of the master suite, or take in the iconic landscape of Ghost Ranch while you grill on the portale off of the kitchen.
Spend your days hiking, visiting area galleries, or reconnecting with your own creative side. And after enjoying the unique sunset at the end of the day, savor the starlight of the unadulterated night sky.
'My first memory is of light--the brightness of light--light all around.' Georgia O'Keeffe
NOTE: RV's, trailers of any sort, large trucks, and small vehicles: motorcycles, skimobiles and such are prohibited in this gated community, called High Mesas.
- "We come back to this home away from home every year. As the title suggests, we will return." - "We so enjoyed our stay at your home in Abiquiu. It was the highlight of out trip to New Mexico."

'Breathtaking,' 'Fabulous,' 'Stellar,' 'Magical' - Casa del Rio, a unique southwestern home awaits those who seek a glimpse into what the West was like – before it was “won.”
Casa del Rio offers timeless views of the Rio Chama, Abiquiu Lake, Ghost Ranch - with no other habitation to confound the imagination. The house rests on a mesa about 100 feet above the narrowest part of the Rio Chama, just before it empties into Abiquiu Lake. Guests of the Casa enjoy limited access to the private lakefront. Four circles of stones (tipi rings) found on the land are silent proof that these vistas have been enjoyed by people for hundreds of years.
Inside the 1500 square foot house, you will find all the luxuries and amenities of the 21st century. An open floor plan includes a great room, dining area, and kitchen; all under hand-hewn vigas harvested from the San Juan forest. Leather couches, swivel chair, Taos-made furniture - all make it a pleasure to take in the ever changing landscape in any direction. (Be sure to catch the dawn when the morning light descends upon the water). Hand painted retablo and santos, Navaho and Zapotec rugs, prints by RC Gorman, and Georgia O'Keefe all enhance the experience of being immersed in the southwest.
The kitchen features granite countertops, energy saving appliances, and an island with cooktop. A 42” LED satellite TV, WiFi, and soundbar provide connection to the modern world. (for those who must) Soft foam, queen size mattresses, resort quality bedding ensure your night’s rest – so you can be prepared for your next day’s adventure...
Located in the heart of the Piedra Lumbre (Valley of the Shining Stones) Casa del Rio was designed for outdoor living. Covered portales on the east, north, and west sides provide shade from the ever bright New Mexico sun. The concave shape of the house provides shelter from wind and wraps around an additional 800 square feet of a Colorado red flagstone courtyard. On the courtyard, or under the portal, you will find; a three-burner gas grill, two lounge chairs, a love seat, and table and dining chairs for four.
To complete your Abiquiu experience there is an outdoor hot tub positioned for panoramic river and mountain views. For those who prefer, there is also a two-person, heart-shaped bath. Full moon nights are so bright you can see colors on the walls of the river canyon. On moonless nights the stars seem so close you could almost reach up and touch them...
Regarding thecoronavirus, I would like my guests to know that I take the pandemic very seriously. In addition to already high standards for cleanliness, all surface areas and commonly touched objects like keys, doorknobs, TV remote, etc. are cleaned and disinfected between visits.
The waters of Abiquiu provide an important resting place for migratory birds; a virtual oasis in a land of desert and mountains. Eagles, osprey, geese, and many other species take time to have their needs met on their way to other destinations. Perhaps this description may one day apply to you!
- "Amazing house and beautiful views. We loved our stay." - "This was hands down the best VRBO we’ve ever stayed at. The view was incredible, home was clean and comfortable, location was quiet and peaceful, exactly what we needed! Add in the hot tub and it was perfection! Gordon has a magical property and we are so thankful he’s willing to share the experience with others!" - "3rd time staying there Will be back again Lots of great hiking in the area Fantastic sky full of stars Morning soak in the hot tub Loved it all"

NEW: The Alpaca Barnhaus and the alpaca barn are available for small weddings. Walk down the aisle through the pasture with an alpaca. Come up and look at our venue and see if this is the place for an unforgettable and unusual wedding.
Being in nature is magical, a retreat from the workplace. (Wi-Fi is available.)The Barnhaus has cell phone service. And a landline phone is available. Enjoy an isolation vacation to recharge your own batteries. Enter a world of nature.
Relax in the mountains in a perfect getaway/base camp--winter, spring, summer, or fall.
Centrally located in the Jemez/Valles Caldera area. The Barnhaus is ideal for small retreats for writers or artists. Plan your next adventure or romantic getaway at the Alpaca Barnhaus. You will be back!
The Alpaca Barnhaus is located on one acre in the Santa Fe National Forest just 3.5 miles off the National Scenic Byway known as “The Jemez Trail” (NM Hwy 4). This two-bedroom home is surrounded by aspen and conifers. Perched at the top of a mountain, the quiet serenity of the surroundings makes it a perfect getaway for couples or individuals looking for a retreat in nature.
Walk across a large meadow to the pond. Continue up the ridge to a gorgeous overlook of San Antonio Canyon where the San Antonio River offers great fishing (but you have to drive around because the steep cliffs don’t invite even the most adventurous!)
You may choose to hike to the river through Mushroom Basin. The hike takes about an hour one way. A picnic lunch may be in order. During the winter months, snow is on your nature menu. Close by is an excellent hill for sledding, and cross-country skiing is ideal. Near Los Alamos are down-hill ski runs.
The house has two bedrooms upstairs in the loft (queen-sized bed in one bedroom and full-sized bed in the other bedroom) and a half-bath upstairs in the loft. A single bed is downstairs. On the first level is a full bath with a shower. The cabin has a forced-air furnace, ceiling fans and wood stove. At this altitude air conditioning is unnecessary since the temperature in the summer rarely gets above 80.
The Alpaca Barnhaus is furnished in a way that makes you feel like it's your home, too. The kitchen is fully stocked with cookware. If you’ve forgotten to bring something, Amanda’s Country Store is just down the hill in La Cueva. For your convenience there's a washer/dryer with eco-friendly washing products. A picnic table is on the side deck. If the night is clear, take the comfortable air mattress outside and enjoy stargazing from the deck. We do not charge a cleaning fee as long as you leave the house as you found it. $120 if you do not care to clean the house. 90% of our guests clean the house. There are no additional fees.
OH, ALPACAS! The owners have an alpaca ranch near the Alpaca Barnhaus. Mickey and Evelyn will be happy to introduce you to these friendly fur-bearing animals. They are quiet, odor-free, gentle on the environment, and produce exquisite fiber that is made into yarn and other alpaca products. As you stand in the barn area, the alpacas will run down the hill, enter the barn, and weigh themselves! Indeed, you will get up close and personal with the alpacas as you learn about them and get a chance to feed them with their special pellet supplements. Alpacas are known to be the most intelligent of all livestock. Our guarantee: You and the alpacas will smile.
About 20 minutes south in historic Jemez Springs are restaurants, a saloon, a historic hot-springs bathhouse with massages, and an outdoor hot-springs pool. Jemez Springs is home to several outstanding artists, too. Farther south on Hwy 4 is the Jemez Pueblo Walatowa Center with its fine museum and native-American crafts.
In the other direction toward Los Alamos you will enter the awe-inspiring Valles Caldera National Preserve. Tours can be arranged online or in Jemez Springs. Off the road in the Valles Caldera you will wonder at the Valle Grande where you can usually spot elk herds.
Continue driving to Bandelier National Monument with its ancient cliff dwellings. This is another good place to have a picnic. Afterwards loop back up to Los Alamos and visit the two outstanding museums. The museum run by the historical society takes you back to the formation of the plateaus and the foundation and operation of the Los Alamos Ranch School. For the making of the atomic bomb, the Ranch School gave way to Los Alamos Scientific Lab. The second museum, The Bradbury Museum, takes you through the war years to the present.

Drive twenty-five minutes from Aspen Ridge Alpacas and experience the amazing Valles Caldera. The Valles Caldera National Preserve (now a national park) was a private ranch until 2000, when Congress created it from a well-known ranch known as “the Baca Ranch” in New Mexico’s volcanic Jemez Mountain Range. This 89,000 acre property is situated inside a collapsed crater. Studded with eruptive domes and featuring Redondo Peak (11,254 feet), this old ranch property is now being developed to explore a new way of managing public lands. The preserve is open to the public, but we guarantee you’ll find the visit unlike any other you’ve had in a park or national forest.

Evidenced by the photography, narratives and passion of companion properties listed on this site- and seared into the American imagination by the paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe- the Piedra Lumbre basin captivates; a thin place. From the edge of a mesa, Casita á Medida surveys it all: red cliffs forming Abiquiu Lake to the East, Ghost Ranch expanding to the North, Chama River Valley to the West and El Pedernal dominating the horizon to the South. Filling between are the ranges of Sangre de Cristo and the Jemez, Santa Fe National Forest and Kit Carson National Forest. And dark sky nights.
To experience this area takes time, a lifetime pursuit of many. Days of hiking, fishing, boating, rafting, discovering petroglyphs, searching for fossils/ historic remnants; trips to Santa Fe, Taos, Ojo Caliente, Navajo Lake, Heron Lake, Chama, Pagosa Springs, Silverton and Durango, CO. Casita á Medida is designed with the long stay in mind. Built in the spirit of Northern New Mexico with deep deference to the surrounding landscape, Casita á Medida is a compound style retreat with one building housing dual master suites and another the great room, forming a protected patio third living space. The vast windows frame the art listed above (follow the changing forms of El Pedernal while preparing dinner; overlook the serenity of Ghost Ranch as you relax in the soaking tub). Inside melts to out. Designed to be completely off-grid, the site also features sustainable design such as passive solar mass, solar heat-boost for the domestic hot water and radiant floor heat, as well as gray watering, rain catchment and Holzer spirited permaculture supporting landscaping designed to further the circle.
With dual master suites (featuring a King and Queen or Queen and two twins) and a separated great room/kitchen structure, Casita á Medida can be modified to meet the needs for your stay. Allow yourself the time to be able to appreciate the experience. Allow yourself permission that the enjoyment - and biggest achievement- was that the day was.

- "Everything about this property was amazing! No matter which way you turn you have gorgeous views. Would definitely stay again!" - "Absolutely stunning views out ever window you can sit on the deck and see Ghost ranch and the lake. The house has the perfect layout open and inviting. Located about 20 feet north of neighboring El Sol Studio, The Studios are a perfect pairing for travelling friends. The studios enjoy shared outside common areas including a flagstone patio, a charcoal BBQ grill, picnic table, outdoor seating, and free parking. All areas have views galore!
The Studios are perfect additional rooms for nearby vacation home rentals. They are also great lodging options for solo travelers, couples, outdoor artists or those taking workshops at Ghost Ranch. If you don't need a lot of space or a kitchen, The Studios may be a great option for you. There are two studios in the building so you may have a neighbor or friend on the other side of the building.
As small economy guest rooms, the The Studios do not have WiFi or televisions (although your cell phone should work fine at the location and you can use your cell as a hot spot). This is a great place to unplug and rejuvenate!
Bring all your food and drink provisions with you. Bring prepared foods or plan to prepare simple meals in the microwave, toaster oven or outside on the charcoal BBQ. While two plates and cups are provided, you will want to bring any dishes that you want to cook with. Bring your own charcoal and lighter fluid for the grill.
The studios are located outside the village of Abiquiu in a gated community on Abiquiu Lake. It is about a 25 minute drive to Abiquiu. There is a wonderful history in this area - from dinosaurs, to Native American pueblos, to Spanish explorers, to cattle rustlers, to ghosts and witches, to Georgia O'Keeffe - all the way to our current age where the past history and culture blends with the multi-cultral artist colony that Abiquiu has become.

You will also want to explore the Purple Adobe Lavender Farm, Bandelier National Monument, the nearby Cumbres Toltec Train, rafting the Chama River, the Ra Paulette Cave Tour, and Ojo Caliente.
You will need a car. During winter months, we recommend a 4WD or AWD as many of the roads in New Mexico are dirt/gravel. The roads back to the studios are dirt/gravel.

- "I had trouble locating the unit. A bit remote; had to travel a few miles on a gravel road. GPS info in listing is not accurate - GPS does not work well at the location. When I arrived, 1/2 of unit had no power. Called Tania, she came immediately and flipped the breaker switch back on. However, after my arrival, ABSOLUTELY no problems. Enjoyed the views, the peace and quiet, rainbows after showers on far side of lake. Pet friendly. I would recommend this unit to anyone who may be traveling in the area."

The setting is unique, the house is well maintained, and it's full of special little touches. Who knew I liked lemon cookies? The daily hikes on the property are great. The views and the quiet are magic. And we caught the spring blooms as a bonus." - "I almost want to leave a terrible review to keep this gem to myself😁 We arrived late at night we were welcomed with a warm and cozy home in the cold February weather. We couldn’t believe to the views we saw in the morning when the sun was streaming in our bedroom! We made gourmet meals every night and cozied up to the fire watching the winter storm blow through. Star gazing was amazing✨ Everything in the house was well organized with all the essentials to make the stay convenient. The place is far from a grocery store so plan on doing that before you arrive however Courtney and Shaun provided with essentials (coffee☕️) for the morning and a very pleasant stay. ❤️🌵"

We charge a 30 USD dog fee per dog. This fee is solely for our cleaner, she is a gem and has a very hard time leaving the place SPARKLING clean without a little extra consideration.
- "Our stay at The Land was very enjoyable. We stayed in the treehouse with our kids (5 years old and 18 months) and Grandma and Grandpa and used it as our base of operations for my wife’s elk hunt. The place has a great layout inside and the front porch and treehouse made for a the perfect outdoor play area for the kids. The lack of city lights and the front deck made for some beautiful views of the stars and planets through the spotting scope at night. It was located perfectly for hunting and we only had a short drive to our hunting spots each day. The amenities were as advertised and the lack of cell service makes for a good way to unplug from the normal day to day. The Wi-Fi was solid and allowed us to review maps at night and make our plans for the next day without issue. Contact with the owners was easy (we needed to extend our stay by one day) and during our discussion Jonathan asked if we needed anything and offered to drop additional firewood off at our place. He was very accommodating and friendly when we met him. This is a very pretty location and one we are planning to check into again, especially if we need a good base camp for a hunt in the area."

- "Fantastic in all ways...highly recommend." - "Our week-long stay was made 10x more memorable because we stayed at The Grand Hacienda. Each morning started with a hearty and healthy breakfast served with care by the hosts Carolyn and Tom. They made a space for guests to get to know each other as well as rest and relax in beautiful solitude. The property is set in a very private location with views overlooking Abiquiu Lake and the Pedernal - you couldn't take a bad photo if you tried. The accommodations were top notch and very comfortable - they took great care in designing and building the hacienda! We look forward to coming back again to explore more of New Mexico!"

- "Our few days at The Grand Hacienda, high on a mesa overlooking Abiquiu Lake and the surrounding stunning geography, were like a time apart; a place where time slows down and one is relieved, for a bit, of the noise of the world. This unique place is the product of two remarkable individuals who took the time and did the research to create a sophisticated yet down to earth, aesthetic and restorative experience. As artists (painter and architect), we deeply appreciate the "green" construction, the design and strategic siting of the building and each of its three suites, the thoughtful cuisine - creative, healthful and delicious! - the overall tone of the place, its tasteful landscaping and appointments. There simply isn't anything intrusive or abrasive in the entire experience. On the contrary, everything is designed to offer a time and space that is both stimulating and profoundly restful. Carolyn and Tom have created a jewel."
