- "This property is simply an old fashion motel. It is clean with no frills. The room was clean; it is on the other side of the street from the train noise which is constant in Gila Bend. I would recommend asking for a room facing away from the road to minimize the train noise. Most the motels are on the train side of the road. There is no frill breakfast offered. TV has over 100 channels to watch if that is your thing. We were there to hunt and didn't use the room much other to sleep and shower."

Had to unplug TV to turn it off. Office had damaged stairs. No disabled accessibility or smoke free spaces. Manager chain smoked to and from rooms. Owner was nice though."

- "Fun time for the SILs to get away, do some challenging hiking and have good reading time!" - "The property sits among the saguaros of the Sonoran Desert. There is even an amazing, mature saguaro that abuts the walk-out deck. A small gate allows you to leave the property and access state land that is covered with trails suitable for hiking, horseback riding, and driving ORV's. Skies are dark. The property sits about a mile or so off the freeway, so there is road noise when the doors are open, but it's not super loud. The home is located about a 20-minute drive from downtown Maricopa, so you have a way to go if you need something from town. For us, the remoteness worked as it was the scenery and easy access to trails that attracted us. Due to its rural location, we had a few hiccups regarding electricity and connectivity, but they were short interruptions and only on one occasion. The unit is one half of a duplex with the owner, Leona, living on the opposite side. Leona was a gracious host and worked hard to make sure all was running smoothly and that we had what we needed. The kitchen is fully furnished, but you had to kind of "dig" through a lot of extras to find what you needed sometimes. If you are only staying for a night or two, the very small, camper-sized refrigerator should be sufficient. It was too small for our longer stay. The 2 bedrooms have sliding door openings to the deck and great views of the desert. It's the west side of the building, so you get the afternoon sun and sunsets! Great stay!"

Located on 3.3 acres in the Sonoran Desert with great views of TableTop Mountain and the surrounding area. Birdwatching, Stunning Sunsets and Stargazing happen often here. Experience living in a beautiful earth-friendly oasis with a relaxing, earthy atmosphere. Simply and eclectically decorated. Two foot thick walls help maintain a comfortable even temperature throughout the home. An open southern-facing courtyard is surrounded by native plants. Two furnished bedrooms and a fold down futon in the Great Room make living for 5 comfortable and cozy.
(The futon sleeps 2.) Full kitchen and great room provide lots of room for eating and relaxing. Stove is gas. Far Infra-Red Sauna is available for use by request (add fee). TV can do approximately 30 local channels. Home is solar-powered. There's no landline here, so make sure you bring your cell phone chargers. Smartphones can get internet access out here...though signal strength will vary depending on your carrier. We use Verizon with rarely an issue.
NO WI-FI or cable. Do expect to relax. Perfect as a retreat for writers. We are not high-tech here. ;-) As of November 2018, we are opening our horse arena to our guests that would like to bring horses. $100 per month. We are minutes to the Historic Ajo Plaza and 5 minutes out to the desert to view many of our beautiful Sonoran Desert Vistas. We are also just 30 mins. from Organ Pipe National Monument. The view from inside is limited, but sitting outside you have a great view of our spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Our little house was one of hundreds built by the Phelps-Dodge mining company to house the workers at its New Cornelia copper mine between 1916 and 1985. We recently completed the first phase of a long term renovation plan and it's ready for people to enjoy.

This former mining town turned artist colony is emerging as a base camp for outdoor adventurers, astrophotographers, and everyone else who wants to revel in the remote beauty of the Sonoran Desert.

The town's burgeoning scene includes live music and dance shows, literature and art presentations, open air markets, and a growing range of artisanal culinary offerings, all with a Sonoran Desert twist that is unique to Ajo.

Phoenix and its metropolitan amenities are two hours away by car, and the laid back culturepalooza of beautiful Tucson is only a 2.5 hour drive along scenic AZ 86.

If you're feeling the need to get your beach on, bring your passport and pop down to the former fishing village and current resort town of Puerto Peñasco, a two hour jaunt across the Mexican border to the Gulf of California (don't forget to buy Mexican car insurance in Ajo before you go).

As beautiful as the desert is, Ajo's greatest natural attraction is its dark night sky. More than a hundred miles from the nearest major city, the absence of light pollution allows Ajo visitors to see the night skies of their ancestors. The backyard of the house is on the lowest fringe of Bortle 4. Bortle 3 is a five minute walk, and Bortle 2 is a five minute drive. (You'll need camping gear and a 4WD vehicle to enjoy Bortle 1.)

The Ajo Hideaway home itself is historic from the New Cornelia mining days but is very clean, modern and functional. The interior boasts 20 inch gorgeous desert color tile throughout, tile walk in shower and a fully equipped and functional kitchen. The new laundry machines have their own large room on the east side of the home. With large covered front and back porches, there is ample outdoor space for relaxing, barbecuing, and enjoying the sights and sounds of Ajo. Pride of ownership is evident in the Hideway's well maintained look and feel, with a clean and attractive property all around, including a ficus tree. All furniture and beds are high quality. The Hideaway sleeps five with the master sunset bedroom having a queen bed, the guest sunset bedroom has a full bed and in the living room area there is a fold out twin size sleeper sofa. For those chillier desert nights there are electric oil filled radiators for the bedrooms and an electric dura flame fire place mantel heater for the living area as well a cooling/heating unit in the living room. The bedrooms have individual window A/C units. The living space is open, airy and light, and easy to keep clean. The home is filled with beautiful southwestern artwork including many pieces from Ajo local artists. Ajo, and particularly its old Curley school apartment building, is home to many incredible regional artists. Behind the Curley school is the Sonoran Desert conference center with its pretty gardens, some of which are used to grow food for the community in conjunction with the Center for Sustainable Agriculture organization of Ajo.

The entire property is chainlink fenced for pets. For a 900 square foot home, the feel is much larger especially considering the laundry/storage room adds a lot more square footage.

The beautiful Ajo area abounds with activities such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, birding, star gazing, golf, motorcycle and atv exploration and wildlife viewing. Behind the town mountain are the Little Ajo mountains on BLM public land which offer thousands of acres of trails and stunning red rock and green desert scenery. Ajo itself is rich in history, being the oldest mining town in Arizona which once supported the New Cornelia copper mine. The historic townsite district has been wonderfully revitalized and maintained by the International Sonoran Desert Alliance and is home to incredible architecture, including old restored churches, schools and the iconic plaza buildings, all lined with old growth desert palms. Many of the buildings reflect the early Spanish influence in the area. The name Ajo itself literally means garlic. The Spaniards used the name during their early mining efforts as it was their way of spelling the Tohono O'Odham's word for a certain mineral found in the earth. The Tohono O'dham are the indigenous people of the land. The community in Ajo is diverse and colorful, reminiscent of an old west mining town but rich in cultural influence from the Tohono O'Odham, Spanish, Mexicans, Americans as well as other travelers from across the globe. Ajo is a rustic, yet peaceful, culturally progressive town, and it is equipped with all the modern conveniences you might need.

Ajo has a large, very well maintained park with pool, dog park, ball fields, tennis and basketball courts, and skate park. Just outside of town lies the Ajo country club for golf and the Eric Marcus small airport. Childs mountain lies to the north which is excellent for sunset viewing tours. South of town by about fifteen miles is the amazing Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and adjacent to the BLM recreational land all along Ajo lies the Cabeza Prieta wildlife refuge, which is also excellent for excursions.

Besides the stunning views in every direction, the climate in Ajo is phenomenal for those seeking to escape winter with abundant Sonoran desert sunshine and warmth. As the locals say, Ajo is where summer spends the winter. More times than not in this small town you will get a wave and a smile from people you encounter and most folks in Ajo are very friendly. The pace is slower in Ajo with only one stoplight and just a handful of restaurants. There is also an excellent IGA grocery, and hardware store.

Christmas time in Ajo is magical with the community gathering around the lit up plaza while Santa waves to all from the Curley school bell tower--a tradition well worth experiencing more than once. There are many social organizations, clubs, churches and events to enjoy in Ajo as well, just check in at the ever helpful Ajo visitor center on the plaza to see what's happening.

The Ajo Hideaway is located at the top of Ocatillo Street (don't be thrown off the misspelling of Ocotillo on the sign), just down from the corner of Sahuaro St and is a wonderful perch to enjoy the town from and get away from the hustle bustle of urban life. You may find yourself surrounded by hummingbirds, doves, desert thrashers and cactus wrens while on the front porch. The home is surrounded by native mesquite trees and native cacti on adjacent properties. Circle K and the Family Dollar store are just blocks away for convenience and just up the road a mile is the IGA grocery. Ajo is truly a magical place. "This is one in a million house and one in a billion hostess. Book, you will be the saddest when you leave and will be looking forward to coming back. The details: 1. The communication before you book and before you arrive is in real time, thoughtful, kind, knowledgeable - basically, everything you'd want it to be. Nita will recommend places if you are interested in a specific activity, Nita will bring extra gadgets so you don't have to pack them (in my case it was French Press, so Nita provided the French press and the coffee and cream - amazing hospitality!!!). Communication during your stay is the same - amazing, fast, kind, friendly. The best. 2. Arrival - the house is so welcoming when you arrive. The music is softly playing in the background, the oil diffuser is making the inside smell so nice, the hot tub is hot for you to dip in and look at the stars, the pool is there if you want to take the weight of the trip off your shoulders. 3. Amenities - I can't say enough. There are fluffy robes (I stayed in many 5 star hotels in many countries, these robes are VERY FLUFFY, much fluffier than I had ever experienced). The number of towels, also white and very fluffy, is unlimited. The wonderfully smelling soaps, shampoo, conditioner, hair products, creams, etc are all there. You don't have to bring anything. The number of pillows on the beds is mind boggling - and they are all comfortable. You can read in bed and be fully supported on all sides. The pillows are also very comfortable for sleeping. There is a small oven, you can warm croissants or casseroles. There is a one burner electric stove top - you can boil a tea kettle or fry an egg. There are marshmallows and power bars for sitting around the fire - the fire pit is included with 4 chairs around it to toast marshmallows and look at the stars. There is a ton of various tea bags, creams, spices for grilling. The grill is also included with all the tools. I couldn't think of anything that would be needed for a vacation that wasn't there. Blankets, candles, matches, water, ice, and all the tools and utensils are there. And the stars and quiet. It is so quiet, you'll sleep through the night with no interruptions. 4. Personal touches - Nita is the most gracious host I have ever known. When I arrived, there was a hand written card from Nita wishing me a lovely stay. There was a bag with presents under the tree with my name on it (I arrived 13 days before Christmas). There was the tree, all decorated and lit up with the Christmas music playing in the background. It was amazing! I felt relaxing right away. And I felt so welcomed all through my stay. Nita baked cookies and shared with me; she got pizza for her "boys" and asked me if I wanted any (I did and it was delicious!). 5. WiFi and work. Nita and her husband John put in the new wireless connectivity. WiFi was great - you shouldn't have any concerns if you are planning on working from the desert. I had the Zoom calls the whole week I stayed and the connection was great - no interruptions, no dropped calls, everything was working smoothly. I highly recommend staying at Nita's Casita. You will experience the out of this world hospitality and you will relax under the stars. The larger bedroom's window faces east, so you can see the sunrises, which are beautiful. The other bedroom's window faces west, so you can see the sunsets, which are also beautiful. The porches around the Casita offer a lot of shaded lounging spaces and, of course, there is a lot of space for lounging around the pool. Book, stay, relax.
