- "Best hotel in Karuizawa, best view and best location" - "Great scenery!" - "Grounds and the buildings in general are very beautiful. The furniture is off-putting. Might be trying to create a “Meiji-era” feeling but it’s comes off strange. The use of all the dark colors is not cheery. A more modern touch would improve the experience. Staff were great. Expedia should improve communication about this property though, as we did not make any dinner reservations in advance, it was a bit of an issue. Lucky for us, it wasn’t so busy. We liked both onsen spas and had the most wonderful facial/massage experience."

Later, we decided to go for a swim and because it was stipulated that we not use the bath towels for swimming, we asked at reception if they had any towels we could use at the lake; they used Google Translate to convey that this service was not available “yet” (?) and then had a discussion in Japanese concluding in the confirmation that they couldn’t help us. We went and had a swim without anything to dry ourselves with, wishing we could walk through reception dripping wet to prove a point. They had a pool, but it was empty - at least the little water that WAS in it was put to good use by a large frog that lived there. Near the blocked-off small pier and beach outside the hotel, there were several rotting dead fish. There was a general ‘Hotel California’ vibe about the place and we got the sense that it was all a little bit sub-standard and lacked the sense of professionalism one would expect for the cost. The area itself is beautiful and the hotel has so much unrealised potential as a beautiful resort but it was definitely not at the time we visited in summer of 2024. Some of the staff seemed nice enough but the rude, unhelpful ones left a bad taste in the mouth. What a shame."

The hotel is about a 10 min walk from some restaurants and a supermarket. It is an easy walk next to a major road and some rice fields, but it is lacking in streetlights and can be very dark. It is about a 15-20 min walk from Echizen-Takefu station. The staff is friendly. They do not speak English, but this is expected - some attempt to engage in basic Japanese (and a translator app) will go a long way. Plan ahead if you want to call a taxi - at check-out, I was told that the next available taxi would not be available for another 45 mins. As I had an appointment to keep, I ran to the info centre (which has very friendly staff) at the train station (~5 mins run?), where I was able to get a taxi to come in 10 mins."

- "Room is spacious and very clean. It may have been a luxurious hotel but it is now running with little staff and decoration is a bit old-ish. The swimming pool is closed and has not seen water in ages. There are two onsen and they are both good. One is with a sauna and the other one is open air type. Breakfast was good and had a lot of different type of food, but mostly Japanese salty type of food. Hotel needs to be reached by car as it is in the middle of the woods. I liked the room, the quietness of the aera and the city nearby. Lovely area to rest."

- "Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba sits at the foot of the Cortina ski resort, which makes it a perfect ski in-and-out situation. The room had two single beds, and space for three futon with a max capacity of 5 persons. However, it was a perfect roomy space for my friend and I. Room was very clean, with a great view of the slope. It was a lot of fun to sit on the windowsill and watch the snow plows. The room had an assortment of glassware/cups and comes with a fridge, which is useful because there isn't much around the hotel itself to eat. Restaurant- nice buffet style dinner and breakfast (7-9am) . Be wary that breakfast time can be a bit busy/crowded if you come around 8am. Both meal times offered a good variety of western and Japanese food and was delightful. The beef stew was especially awesome. There is no notice on their site stating no tattoos allowed in the onsen (also boasts a great view of the ski slopes), but there was a sign posted outside the onsen itself. I disregarded it, as there were only Chinese in the baths and no one seemed to mind. It's a nice onsen, excluding that no tattoo sign. Staff are very kind, and when we were there, there were staff speaking Japanese, English, and Chinese. Tamura-san was very prompt with email replies. All in all, a lovely stay for a good price for convenience, cleanliness, and amenities."
