No one answered the phone and upon reaching, they did not open the gate for 15 minutes, despite honking the car horn in the rain. • Polite but utterly incompetent Manager and his helper/waiter, who was about 20 years old had no clue about service. I had to help • The place is nothing at all like the photos; photos and website descriptions were completely misleading. Photos taken by fixing mirrors to extend the views/size. Only one house with 4-5 rooms in a line off a corridor leading straight to the kitchen. As a result the whole place had constant cooking smell. • Could not stay in the bedroom because of smell. The bedroom had no views, no TV or phone in the room. There were blood stains on the bedroom carpet. Bathroom door would not close. (I have photos to prove) Smelly towels, blankets and pillows We would not have accepted all this, but we had no choice at 6-7 PM on a rainy evening and no way to contact the owner, who presumably lives in Colombo and has left the property/guests at the mercy of the incompetent Manager "

- "It's a trip back into an imperial past, that is now open to many. High ceilings, a mix of wood floor and thick carpets, and staff in a range of uniforms. The level of English is good (sadly, my poor French wasn't up to the task of testing the staffs'). There is a good selection of eateries ranging from 'stuff yourself silly' to light bites. I highly recommend the Thai restaurant downstairs. I would avoid the coffee shop, where I was unsuccessful in attempting to buy over-priced cakes to take out - after the guy "serving" me walked off twice, to deal with other people, I decided that two can play the walking away game. So, overall good, if uneven."

The gardens were stunning and beautifully kept. The hotel was like a step back in time - not for those looking for a modern hotel - but the hotel was beautifully kept. My only comment would be that the bed was squeaky! Dinner in the fine dining room was a real experience with a large diverse menu and wine list. Yes you have to dress up but that is part of the whole experience and was one of my favourite nights so far. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive - maybe too much so at times. They would check on us every five minutes but it was really lovely to see that they cared. "
