- "A bed for everyone!" - "My husband and I stayed for 1 night on our way to Kansas City for a baseball game. Phil and Dawn were very gracious and accommodating hosts. The home is also very close to everything Manhattan, KS has to offer. Our room was just as pictured and the bed was extremely comfortable and the en-suite bathroom was spacious and the shower had good water pressure and plenty of hot water. Phil's breakfast consisted of homemade quiche Lorraine, freshly baked bread, fresh fruit from their garden, and locally sourced veggies. It was excellent and kept us full until dinner time. Thank you Phil and Dawn for such an easy and pleasant stay. We hope to return and spend more time enjoying more of what Manhattan and the Flint Hills area has to offer."

The recent home remodel was a complete reset for the property. We basically built a brand-new house inside an old one. The house was taken down to studs and rafters. Walls, bathrooms, and a stairway were all moved and a large fireplace was removed to open up and create a huge living space on both the main-floor and lower level. The home has been remarkably and tastefully decorated with unique mid-century-modern furniture and art pieces that were currated from all over the United States. (For the non-initiated, "mid-century-modern" (MCM) refers to a movement in interior design, product design, graphic design, and architecture that was popular from 1945-1970. The MCM design aesthetic is modern in style and construction. It is typically characterized by clean, simple lines and generally does not include decorative embelishments.)

This house sits on a corner lot and has a shaded, fenced back yard.

There is a queen size bed in an open room with the dining table near the kitchen. A futon sofa in the living room can convert to a comfortable full size bed. The futon sleeps 2 children or one adult comfortably. Two newly remodeled bathrooms with showers means no wait! Some toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, and lotion provided. All linens provided. If you would rather stay in and cook no problem! The well stocked kitchen has everything you need, and the dining table seats 4. There is a coffeemaker and coffee and tea available. The Loft is on the second floor, overlooking the art gallery of The Volland Store. At night, unless there is an event open to the public, you have the gallery to yourself. Guests tell us it feels like "a night at the museum." The Volland Store is in an official dark zone. The skies are full of stars - and if you plan it right, there is a full moon.

Truly a rural retreat in the heart of the Flint Hills. Coffee is provided, but bring something for breakfast.

The space
The Loft is located in a historic general store that has been re-purposed as an art gallery, an events venue, and a community gathering place. The Volland Store sits in a working landscape midway between two small towns in the heart of the Flint Hills. Coffee is provided, but bring something for breakfast if you’re not inclined to make an eight-mile trek for ham and eggs. Internet reception is good. However, cell service is problematic. U.S. Cellular is the preferred provider in the area, but for other providers, a drive to the top of a nearby hill usually works. You won’t find all the conveniences of an urban environment; you will find something better. Bring your sense of wonder and discovery and a desire for a unique experience.

The Volland Store is a Place for Art and Community. Normal operating hours are 1-4pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and there are occasional events that draw a crowd to the Store. Please visit our website (Happenings>Current Happenings) to see the events that may be occurring during your stay. You are welcome to attend any of our events or gatherings!

Guest access
You will have access to the art gallery, the full kitchen (including oven) on the gallery level, a patio outside the entry door, and 27 acres of prairie and meadow, and a walking trail through the woods that border the property. Country roads are good for hiking, and the gravel roads are ideal for gravel-riding cyclists.

Please note that commercial activities by guests are not allowed in the Loft, in the Volland Store building, or on the grounds of the Volland Store. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Other things to note
There is no TV, nor is there a microwave. There is an oven available for your use, in the kitchen on the gallery level.

Internet service is good. U.S. Cellular is the best carrier for cell service. Other carriers may be problematic. We suggest you download driving directions and door codes from your phone before leaving home. You may not be able to access cell service as you draw near to Volland.

This second tier lake home is just a short walk to a private dock. Enjoy the private patio and picnic table along with a full kitchen and grill.

The lake also offers a golf course and a restaurant.

The space
This property is one bedroom, one bath and one great room that includes living space, full kitchen and dining space. The one bedroom has one queen bed and a set of twin bunk beds. The living space includes a hideaway couch. There is parking enough for 4-5 vehicles.

The house is a historical farmhouse in Alma. We like how homey it is, but we love to share it with our guests.

Delve into the history of this unique and memorable renovated 1898 limestone schoolhouse. Ring the bell, write on the 125 year old blackboard and explore the original details throughout this amazing property. The culinary kitchen, great room and large deck provide spectacular views of the Flint Hills. We are located a half mile North of I-70 on Route 99, the Road to Oz. The quaint downtown of Wamego is only 10 minutes away and 25 minutes from Manhattan, both with shops, food and entertainment.

The space
Make your way down the landscaped walkway and enter through the double door fir archway. Step into the belfry where the original tin ceiling and rope to ring the school bell can be seen above. The walls of the belfry are lined with the original beadboard, slate blackboard and school bench. The hanging coat rack was repurposed from the upper front panel of a 1903 Gabler piano made of Honduran mahogany that was found on the property. Take a moment to browse through class lists, books and photographs of past students.

As you continue down the belfry there are bedrooms, one on each side, which were originally cloakrooms. The north bedroom has a repurposed headboard made from the original cloakroom doors. The bedrooms have new, comfortable queen mattresses. Two large windows in each bedroom let in lots of morning sunlight and allows a view of the beautiful Kansas sunrises.

At the end of the belfry, you will step into the grand entrance room which was originally the classroom. The large symmetrical, vernacular windows, typical of one room schoolhouses, were constructed to allow natural daylight to illuminate the building, even on cloudy or rainy days. These windows allow visitors to take in the ever changing Kansas landscape. The original beadboard ceiling and wood floor make this room stunning. It features all of life’s little luxuries with open plan living and a gourmet kitchen. Relax in the sun filled living space on the comfortable sofa chaise that surrounds the inviting fireplace and big screen television—the perfect place for a movie night with the whole family with access to all of your favorite streaming apps. Prepare an amazing meal or do some baking in the kitchen. There is a French door fridge/freezer with filtered water and ice dispenser, a built in microwave drawer, convection oven with air fryer and gas cooktop and a dishwasher. Serve up all your culinary creations at the dining room table, island or on the deck for a less formal setting. Guests also have access to a washing machine and dryer so they can pack light wash on the go.

One step down from the kitchen/living room is the bathroom. This former infirmary/washroom boasts a double end slipper claw foot tub to be enjoyed by two. Please note there is a step into the glass onyx shower. The original limestone wall is present, allowing guests to see and feel the remnants of an authentic limestone schoolhouse.

Proceed upstairs where a second bathroom and bedroom with two twin beds are located. The view of the belfry and great room from above is spectacular.

Enjoy fresh coffee in the morning on the spacious deck with plush seating. Watch the hummingbirds and wildlife that often come to visit. Relax, get cozy and spend the evening roasting s’mores by the propane fire. End the day with a glass of wine while enjoying the cool Kansas evenings and the sights and sounds of nature.

We built our home 24 years ago and have loved the time our family has spent here! Lake Wabaunsee really is the "Gem of the Flint Hills."
If you want a relaxing, beautiful place to connect with your friends or family, this is it! It's like going back to the 50's where families played games and just enjoyed being together. Our large house has 5 bedrooms and 3 baths, laundry room and beautiful screened in porch. This is a perfect retreat for family reunions or friends' getaways.

The space
Our paddle boat and canoe are available for your use. Life jackets are not provided and guests should bring their own if planning to use the paddle boat or canoe. Fishing gear (poles, hooks, etc) is also not available and guests intending to fish should bring their own. Fishing licenses, boating permits and bait are available for purchase at the bait shop by the swimming beach.

Lakefront property in the heart of the Flint Hills with private access to the lake. This property is located on the beautiful Lake Wabaunsee. This property is also located near the Wabaunsee Pines Golf Course. Lake Wabaunsee also offers a swim beach, boat ramp, and bait shop. If you don't feel like cooking you can enjoy a meal at The Lodge at Lake Wabaunsee-Wild Olives.

Stay in and enjoy the beautiful views and newly constructed space or get out and explore the beautiful Flint Hills. This space offers an open concept kitchen, dining, and living room space.
