- "Our group of 7, ages 20-79, had a wonderful trip. First off, Marlinton is a great town. I’ve visited many times and get over as often as I can. I (and my family) love the area. From the beginning, communication with the owner was excellent. She promptly answered my questions and was also very gracious to me after I’d made a booking mistake. Thank you. The house itself is older, and the owners have done a great job making updates but still maintaining its awesome charm. It’s clear that they love the home. It’s an easy walk to downtown, which was great since Marlinton was having an annual festival and there was a show at the Pocahontas Opera House. We walked back and forth from downtown several times. All areas of the house were very clean, it has a large kitchen with everything and more you need to prepare meals, the main bathroom is good sized, and the living room and TV rooms are very nice. All the bedrooms are nice, and we slept well. The property has a large, fenced-in backyard with plenty of space and we loved the front porch. Internet was fast and reliable. Everyone in our group agreed this was a great place and we’d love to stay again. Absolutely no hesitation. "

Day trips to the just established New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. No virus in these hills and hollows, too remote! Come and enjoy the a vacation worry-free!
Welcome to a quiet farm in the Appalachian Mountains. We have a 100 acre mountain farm with two creeks and miles long views in all directions. The only sounds are Pileated woodpeckers, lambs calling for their mothers and a very rare plane overhead. The sheep love attention and are happy to pretend to pose for photos.
The house is a two story three bedroom timber frame with solar and wood heat that can sleep ten adults or 16 total with children on mattresses on the floor.
The kitchen has a full complement of all necessary cooking resources, a gas stove and oven, (which is working fine contrary to a sour guest's 'warning'), two refrigerators and one freezer, spring water of the highest quality, so there is no need for bottled water.
Pocahontas County, a brilliant gem in these mountains, has many local resources, the Greenbrier River and its Trail, the Cranberry Wilderness Area, for hiking, fishing and cross country skiing, Snowshoe Ski Resort, the best skiing in the East south of New England and the Gauley River for white water rafting in the fall, also the best rafting east of the Mississippi.
- "We stayed with our two little kids on this beautiful enchanting farm for a week and really enjoyed our time. It was exactly what we were looking for, a spot to disconnect for a bit, slow down, and to be in nature. We loved spending time getting to know Dan and the sheep as well! Would love to return again in the future!" - "This was my second time staying at Dan’s farm. Each time, I visited with a different group of 4-5 friends. If you are looking for a beautiful, remote, quiet trip, this sheep farm is an incredible option. Located in the mountains of West Virginia, the farm feels far from the outside world, but provides a great background for long walks, sleeping in, cooking, warm baths, board games, and reading. The land around the home is vast and free to explore — my friends interested in birdwatching especially enjoyed walks in the area. Otherwise, my favorite parts are the beautiful kitchen and dining area as well as the porch that look over the hills of the area. Dan is a more than hospitable host whose home provides so much comfort. This was my second visit here, but certainly not my last."

The space
"Drennen Ridge Guest House is a one-story home with a large, open living space that includes a living room, dining area and fully equipped kitchen . The house sleeps 4 guests. The large master bedroom has a queen bed and ensuite bathroom w/tub. Two additional guests can be comfortably accommodated in the second bedroom, which also has a queen bed, and full bath w/ tub immediately next to it. The two bedrooms and baths are quite separate from each other, which accommodate two couples ideally. If you are a family who needs a separate bed, we have an inflatable mattress available; the couch is not a sleeping option. A pack and play is also available - let us know if you need it. Well-supervised children are welcome, but please understand that you take full responsibility for their safety, as there is a raised deck on the back of the house and the horses are pastured nearby.
The house is stocked with books, family games and jigsaw puzzles, as well as a Smart 48" flat panel TV. There is not cable, but the house has a large library of movies, as well as Roku and a blue-tooth VCR.
The house has WiFi, which should support your own Netflix membership. Several couples and families have had extended stays, requiring multiple users on WiFi, and we have not had any complaints. Many of our recent guests have included two adults working from home.
You will find several collections of books: cookbooks, astronomy, WV history and nature, handbooks in nature topics, and a basket of novels. If you start a novel, you may take it with you. Please enjoy other books for reference during your stay. There is no phone at the house, but you are welcome to use ours, as well as your internet options. AT&T is the only cell phone service that works in town - there is little reception at the house - as we are in the "quiet zone" of the Greenbank deep space listening station. Most tech-savvy guests have been able to use their phones and the internet to meet their calling needs.
There is a free washer and dryer. Guests may enjoy interacting with our two draft horses - 1 Belgian and 1 Suffolk who live directly across the driveway; cut up apples or carrots , are the best way to make friends with The Big Boys from outside their fence. There is extensive lawn and outdoor space around the house, with croquet, ladder ball and corn hole games available in season. Grocery store, gas, pharmacy, liquor store and several local restaurants are one mile away.
The kitchen has some basic cooking staples if you choose to cook during your stay (oil, spices, condiments, etc.), and is extensively equipped for most cooking/baking - pots, pans, baking pans, muffin tin, waffle iron, mixer, casseroles, etc. There are drip coffee makers, complete with filters and coffee, both caffeinated and decaf. We also furnish creamer, sugar and sugar substitute.
Summer guests are welcome to enjoy our perennial gardens and pond at the farmhouse during their stay. Artists and photographers have especially enjoyed visiting our grounds.
Guest access
The house will be your private residence during your stay. Our farmhouse is within view across the horse meadow, and we will arrange access when you book and supply you with your personalized lock code. There is an attached garage, where you may park motorcycles and store sports equipment. Bicycles, canoes and kayaks are available for rent in our nearby village, and ski equipment can be rented at Snowshoe. The porch has two steps and both bathrooms have tub showers, so the property is not wheelchair accessible.
We love animals, but cannot accommodate pets in the guest house, as others may have allergies. You may see our cats when you stroll the grounds at the farmhouse. Our check in and out times are flexible if the house is available. Please turn off outside lights when you are in for the night - we maintain dark skies for everyone's star viewing.
Other things to note
We have put away the lovely bed linens and duvet covers in favor of white linens, including Marriott rippled coverlets, that can be laundered in hot water with bleach. All blankets, mattress covers, pillow covers and sofa throw pillow covers are laundered between guests. All possible surfaces, handles and knobs are sanitized. The house is aired out with all windows open and fans running during vigorous cleaning. We value your health and safety as our own.
Pocahontas County is a year-round natural playground. Snowshoe Mt. Resort is 35-40 minutes north (depending on weather) - a short drive for a day of skiing, with privacy and quiet when you leave the slopes; most summer weekends offer events in the Snowshoe Village. In milder weather, you can fly fish, hike, kayak and bike to your heart's content - the Greenbrier River Trail offers 76 miles of max 1% grade, and access is a mile away. We can usually help with transportation. This trail has been voted number one running and walking trail in the Blue Ridge . World-class mountain biking nearby, too.
Bird watching is a rewarding activity in this natural setting. At night, settle back on the deck and watch for shooting stars and meteors in our pristine skies, with little light pollution.
Cass and Durbin Scenic Railroads (purchase tickets ahead), and Green Bank Observatory offer interesting visits and are close by, as well as a growing number of artisan shops. There are two local golf courses; Raven is a Gary Player designed course at Snowshoe that offers challenging play and magnificent topography. Locally, Pocahontas Country Club is a 9 hole course that is enjoyable, friendly, rarely crowded and is inexpensive to play.
There are diverse choices within an hour drive - hiking, biking, a deep space listening center to tour, newly refurbished Warm Springs Pools, The Greenbrier Resort Bunker Tour and/or a casual lunch in an opulent setting, The Homestead Resort to visit, galleries and shops in Lewisburg - the house has informative brochures and there is a tourism center in town
There is plenty of room to stretch in the mountains - your body, your interests, your friendships and your activities. Local people are interesting, friendly and helpful, and there is plenty to keep all ages and interests busy. If you are looking to unwind and recharge, quiet and solitude abound.
We warmly welcome guests of all ethnicities, religions, cultures, orientations and views, as long as kindness prevails.
- "Peaceful, relaxing and beautiful setting. Couldn't of asked for a better place to celebrate our 50th. The hosts were very helpful and answered all our questions. We loved sitting on the front porch and watching the horses and lots of deer in the evenings. Would certainly come back." - "We had a wonderful time at Drennen Ridge. Although it was a 7 Hour Dr. from our home to Marlington, we stayed in a very lovely small log cabin with solar power, and propane. We were celebrating my wife’s birthday and I would love to have gotten an ice cream cake. , all linens and towels were provided for us. If I had to say one thing, I would ask that they get a slightly larger refrigerator. We were celebrating my wife’s birthday and I would love to have gotten an ice cream cake at The Dairy Queen in town, but it would not fit in the freezer. Also, a slightly more comfortable couch would’ve been really nice but overall we had an amazing time and if not for the 7 Hour drive, I would not hesitate to go back."

Plus there is some good mountain biking in the area. I would recommend utilizing the fully stocked kitchen to prepare meals. The restaurant situation is hit or miss. As for the lodging, great place. I was very pleased." - "Don't let the external look of this place fool you. The inside is incredible. Super nice place kept very clean and modern. Very quiet except for the occasional jake brake of a semi tractor. Right next to the rail trail and within easy walking distance of several restaurants. Highly recommend Dean's Den and Dari Land. I stayed for a week and it was great. Will be coming back again for sure. Can't beat the price."

Cozy, private, clean, newer cabin on 2 acres near the Monongahela National Forest sign in Nature’s Mountain Playground - Pocahontas County, WV. Close to Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort and the Greenbrier River Trail. Big back yard with fire pit.
- "The cabin was just what I was looking for - quiet location, clean, not close to other people. An added bonus was the multiple deer that visited the property and getting to spot several deer, rabbits and one large bird (too far away to id its species) flying overhead while walking on the road that the cabin is on. Had come to the area to ride the Greenbrier River Trail. Also did went on the Greenbrier Resort's Bunker Tour. Jacob and Hannah recommended seeing the Falls of Hill Creek in the Monongahela National Forest which I checked out on my way back home. Planning on returning again to ride the Greenbrier River Trail again (hopefully with better weather) and hike some trails in Monongahela."
