Unique, beautiful & Zen stylish quiet home with king size private 22' ft diameter bedroom; ensuite with 3x5' sunken tub with three walls of windows overlooking the beautiful mountains. Open plan dining & living rooms with click clack couch, small yard and wonderful views. 4 miles to town.
Architecturally elegant and unique design situated with beautiful views. This was a big home that has been duplex-ed and is about 1000 square feet. It was designed for privacy, so the entry door for the other home is on the opposite side of the house from where you enter. Very peaceful and quiet - the only house on the street. I call the area 'country suburbia' with houses peppered in the neighborhood about 1/4 mile away. While this home is open and not small - it provides a warm and intimate setting. Great for writers, retreats and romance with a big 3x5' sunken tub with three walls of windows and mirrors. If you have guests there is a futon couch in the living room with doors for privacy. (The yard is not totally secure for pet safety.) The sister dome is about 1200 square feet - and renting both sides is excellent for smallish events/retreats. There have been a few weddings held here. Location-location!! 4 miles to town.
There is wi-fi/internet access and a TV for watching DVD's. There is a selection of DVD's provided for your entertainment. Organic or all-natural bath wash, shampoo and conditioner, as well as a hair dryer are provided.
There is no formal check-in. I give you the combination for the door to arrive on your own timing. Check-in 3:30 pm and check-out 10:30am. I am open to meeting all my guests needs/questions. However, unless they come to me - I give them total space, peace and quiet! Checking out is simple. All you do is leave ! If you have any questions or problems - please call or text.
This rental is half of a duplex that has been built for privacy. There is an ascetically lovely wide paneled high wooden fence in the back yard. (At the time of this entry, the yard is not secure for pets safety. Please ask when booking if this is required by you.) As well, separate parking spots and entry doors are on opposite sides so that it's most likely you won't even see the other person. We have a lot of folks coming for meditation and designed our home for retreats, writers & romance.
Crestone this is a very remote area without public transportation so you do need a vehicle.
Crestone is one of the most beautiful places to be for hiking and spiritual adventures! There are many hikes with 14,000 ft peaks and for all levels. Also, the peaceful majestic beauty attracts folks from all over the world that come to attend one of the many retreats at the dozen or so spiritual centers. There is a small park and campground 1 block away. As well as horse riding/stables.
- "Great getaway to disconnect and easy day trip to the dunes. We loved the dome house. It was clean and had everything we needed. Really close to downtown Crestone. The pub downtown has excellent pizza! Make sure to bring bug spray if you’re going in summer/July. It’s mosquito season in that part of the state!" - "We had a lovely time staying under the dome, which is especially well-suited for couples, although if you have kids, they can stay in the living room area comfortably. All of the furnishings are very comfortable, the kitchen has all the necessities, and the bathroom has plenty of space along with a luxurious tub. This is actually a duplex, this half being around the back, and the other half also gets rented out under a separate listing. The adjoining wall on this side is only along the kitchen wall off the living room, so you will have privacy in the rest of the house. The house sits at the very edge of the San Luis Valley, right next to the mountains, where the trees give way to the shrubs and dry plants of the valley. The yard is filled with fragrant plants (one of those smells that you wish you could just take with you), bringing you into nature as soon as you step outside. The nearest town is Crestone, which is a tiny little place with an unusual vibe. It's a good spot (and really, the only spot nearby) for grabbing a few light groceries or getting something to eat for dinner if you aren't out and about seeing the rest of the valley. The house is a good staging area for seeing the Great Sand Dunes, Zapata Falls, and the nearby hot springs/pools, if you don't mind a little bit of a drive to get to those places. Overall, we certainly recommend this dome if you're looking for a quiet and comfortable place to stay in the area!"

Main dwelling - 34 ft diameter, rustic wooden floors & 5 1/2 ft round windows over looking great views! Large kitchen, open plan space; king bed in main living area, queen bed in open loft. Retreat-writing, meditation, yoga, dancing, playing, fun! Location-location!! 4 miles to town

I call the area 'country suburbia' with houses peppered in the neighborhood about 1/4 mile away. This is a monolithic dome which means a huge balloon was blown up and sprayed with concrete before the balloon was popped. That part of the house is 34 ft diameter with rustic wooden floors & two 5 1/2 ft round windows over looking great views & yard. (The yard is not totally secure for pet safety.) Large kitchen, very roomy open plan space; king bed/queen bed in the loft, a smart TV and selection of DVDs for your entertainment. The picture shows a ladder going to the loft but it is now a stair case. The loft has an artsy 2 1/2 foot 'picket fence' as a wall. There is sight privacy, but due to it being a half wall, there is no sound privacy. Parents note: Please look at the pictures to decide if this room is child-safe for your needs. About 2 % of folks decide it's not right for them.I imagine it should be no problem unless they are climbers when you're not looking! Please ask for details if you're unsure. This is a wonderful space for retreats, writing, meditation, yoga, dancing, playing, fun! The sister dome is about 1000 square feet - and renting both sides is excellent for smallish events/retreats. There have been a few weddings held here. Location-location!! 4 miles to town.
We are a tourist destination for the great hiking (all levels), as well as many spiritual retreat centers, peace, quiet and beauty. We can be a sleepy town with many smatterings of Fun. There are several hot springs 30-40 mins away, as well as the Great Sand Dunes, alligator park and UFO park.
There is no formal check-in. I give you the combination for the door to arrive on your own timing. Check-in 3:30 pm and check-out 10:30am. I am open to meeting all my guests needs/questions. - "My partner and I had a wonderful experience at the “dome”. The check in process was easy and accommodation was clean." - "Everything was as advertised and place was very clean." - "This quirky dome was pretty spacious. The lofted bed was a bit unsafe for toddlers. The view was incredible from the circle windows, making for fantastic pictures. The property manager was very responsive and helpful. Unfortunately we had hoped it was closer to the Great Sand Dunes but it was over an hour drive which would be nice to note on the description. Overall good experience."

Comfortable bedding. Small refrigerator/freezer. Hammock. Flowers in the warmer months. If you need more cooling space, please request that we leave a medium sized cooler at the site. We are unable to provide ice. There is a 30 foot dog lead if you would like to use it. Nighttime small bulb lighting that brightens up the site. Sponge bath supplies provided. My cell service works well (T-Mobile and AT&T) most of the time. Occasionally, a call drops. There is a camper on the property that may have guests during your stay. The camper is about 150 feet from the yurt. The yurt and the camper are not only separated by distance but also by trees and other vegetation. The yurt is nestled in its own private wooded area. The large parking area is used by occupants of the yurt and by occupants of the camper. Sometimes a car or ATV passes by on a dirt road near the site. From time to time UPS delivers items to our house and drives down our long driveway and past the site. Our little old dog sometimes barks but is not a nuisance barker. He spends most of his time indoors. The site is beautiful and peaceful. Located in a safe sparsely populated mountain forest community.
The bathroom tent utilizes a flush-able portable toilet as the weather permits. During this time there will also be a hand washing foot pump sink with a soap dispenser. (This is the current setup effective 4/14/25) The bathroom tent is not heated. During the colder months, the bathroom tent utilizes an environmentally friendly biodegradable bag system. Use the bathroom, tie the bag off, and dispose of the bag in the adjacent garbage can. If you do not want to change the bag every time, there is the option to utilize cat litter and change the bag per your preference.
Other things to note
Very close to Zapata Falls (about 2 miles). The site borders a green belt (an area that is left to be undeveloped). Another side of the property borders BLM land. The Great Sand Dunes became certified as a International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association, meeting strict standards for sky darkness. The site is located in a remote area close to the dunes and the closest small grocery store is in Blanca which is about 18 miles away. Alamosa, which has a City Market and a Safeway, is about 30 miles away. G maps shows that the yurt is about 4 miles by vehicle from The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.
Smoking is only allowed outdoors (by the fire pit ect.). Please let me know if you plan on smoking so I can leave a professional grade cigarette disposal unit at the site.
- "That never happened. It was amazingly peaceful and private and very accommodating. The owners are nice and helpful. It’s nice to have a good place to relax." - "This yurt was well appointed. We appreciated having two picnic tables. We used one for cooking with our own stove, and one for eating. Four nice chairs made it easy to be comfortable. It was really nice to have a clean camping toilet to ourselves. Close proximity to the Sand Dunes was why we chose this location. it was very convenient. So nice to turn on a heater for a bit on a chilly morning."

- "We stayed here just for a night as when we saw the Great Sand Dunes. The property was clean and nicely decorated, and was more spacious then I originally thought it would be. The small cooler helped to cool things down but was a little loud. When we had some issues with VRBO web site, the manager quickly communicated with us via texts." - "We stayed at this property for one night, and our main plans were to spend some time at the Sand Dunes recreation pool. The location was perfect! We were a short ten minute drive from the pool, as well as numerous other attractions. The house was very well-stocked with cooking equipment, but also had many items for convenience like extra cell phone chargers and beach towels for the pool. It was very clean and quiet at night. There are two bedrooms, each with queen beds, and the loft has two futon mattresses for sleeping as well. Please note that the stairs to the loft are very steep. The kitchen is stocked with all the basics to cook your meals on-site.

- "Great cabin! Very clean and quiet. Perfect place to relax by the fireplace on a cozy evening. Had everything we needed. It was a very nice weekend. I would highly recommend it. And we will be back!!" - "We stayed in this beautiful house for a weekend getaway with our 3 kids (6, 3 and 1 year old) and dog. There was plenty of space to play and run around inside. The beds were super comfy and even had a cot and air mattress for more sleeping options. Loved the decor and beauty throughout the house. We took advantage of the sand sleds when we were at the Dunes and then later took advantage of the washer/dryer in the laundry room to clean up the kids' clothes! Kitchen was fully stocked. K-cups for the morning. Everything is brand new! Great location for the Dunes or the Gators. Highly recommend checking this place out!!"

Exquisite luxury off grid property. Private room, Queen bed, private entrance with ensuite bath. Close to Great Sand Dunes National Park, hiking, fishing and Zapa Falls.
If you are looking for peace and quite, this is it! Enjoy your morning coffee at the base of Mt Blanca. Wild horses roam the propery. There is a cafe close by in Blanca and Ft Garland.
- "I highly recommend this place, visit Zapata Falls, take water shoes, not flip flops, and make sure you go all the way in to the cave to see the second (or is it the first) section of the fall. It's beautiful. Go see the dunes, take a red lantern and see the stars. Visit the mission churches of the valley, and try the fudge shots at the All Gone Cafe. We've really enjoyed our 7 day stay here, we had a few things break, and the owner had someone out to repair them faster than you can usually get someone in the city. It's been very pleasant, the bathtub is very nice and a pleasant place to loll around in during the hottest (85°F) part of the day. It's beautiful here, there are feral horses, pronghorns, rabbits and a few loose cattle roaming. But here are some things you should know about this rental. There is no stove, refrigerator, or kitchen in general. There is a coffee maker. And a good quality ice chest, bring your own ice of course. There is a security system and video monitoring, and motion activated flood lights, which makes star gazing a little hard. There is no A/C. The windows are all sealed so if you're expecting to be able to have a cross breeze in the afternoons, it's not going to happen. (There are dust storms, so this is to help keep the place clean) This place is off grid, so there is a limited amount of power, while we never ran out of power even just before sunrise, we didn't push the system. We charged our 2 phones and our headphones, and a laptop. The lights only flickered when the water pressurizer switched on during showers. The water pressure is great by the way, and the water was always hot. There is a gas stove heater which we never needed, so didn't try. You are getting a bed room and large bathroom attached to a house, it's like staying in a nice hotel room (all the same amenities, except no daily house cleaning)"

Summary:
This luxurious and cozy cabin is tucked into the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo with gorgeous mountain views and the tranquility of nature. Besides enjoying your time at this getaway, venture out to see the Great Sand Dunes National Park and hike the Zapata Waterfall, both less than 10 minutes from the cabin. Don't forget to relax in the hot tub after hiking or cozy up with your favorite drink by the fireplace. After dark, gaze upward on a clear night for an incredible stargazing opportunity.
The Space:
This cabin is perfect for couples, families, and adventurers alike!
The 3 bedrooms (1 king, 2 queens) and open living space will comfortably suit the needs of up to 6 adults.
Guest Access:
Please do not venture further than 50 feet from the house during your stay as we have no fence marking the property and we prefer to keep the view natural.
The Neighborhood:
The home is a part of a lovely HOA surrounded by nature so please respect the nature and the neighbors by observing a quiet time from 9pm to 8am as well as turning off outdoor lights when not in use. The home is in a Dark Sky Association certified area so minimizing light exposure at night allows everyone to enjoy the breathtaking stars!
Other Things to Note:
Important! Please read!
Note 1: We require guests to sign a rental agreement, which states they will adhere to the property rules.
Note 2: There are NO window blinds in the house, but we provide sleeping masks if you want to snooze a bit in the mornings :)
- "The property was as described - comfortable and full of amenities, located in an area from which beautiful and awe-inspiring scenery was visible from every room in the property as well as the outside patios and deck. Celina and Seth were very gracious hosts and easily accessible. We had a wonderful stay!" - "Gorgeous location with incredible views from every window. This home is well stocked and has excellent bedding, beds and pillows. Furniture is nice and comfortable. The hot tub, patio and patio furniture is great too. It is immaculately clean, which we appreciated with 2 -1year olds. We’ve never stayed in a cleaner VRBO, truly spotless!! The one and only thing I would change, adding window blinds. None of the windows have blinds, including the bathrooms. I understand the views shouldn’t be shrouded, however it was hard to have babies take naps with so much incredible light! We would love to stay here again in the future, if grand babies come we will bring a car windshield cover or something similar for baby naps. Cecelia and Seth were awesome and responded to evey request within minutes. Stay here!! You won’t regret it. "

Other things to note
Dogs are welcome at Nelson's Crash Pad. Our house is on the property and part of it is visible from the camper. The side of the house that is closest to the camper is unoccupied as it is only used for storage. There is a yurt on the property that may be occupied during your stay. The yurt is about 150 feet from the camper and there are trees and other vegetation separating the yurt from the camper. The large parking area is used by occupants of the yurt and by occupants of the camper. Smoking is only allowed outdoors (by the fire pit ect.). Please let me know if you plan on smoking so I can leave a professional grade cigarette disposal unit at the site.
- "We enjoyed our stay in the RV, the host was attentive and it came equipped with everything we needed. My only complaint would be the location of the bed in the bedroom, it’s a full and up against the wall, I get claustrophobic so sleeping on that side of the bed was difficult for me since my partner gets up at night. Other than that we had a good time!" - "Had a good over night stay here" - "The winter water shutdown was difficult to do dishes and make meals… other than that, great stay and very accommodating with great views and outdoor amenities. The neighborhood is very quiet, peaceful, and not populated, feels like the last frontier. Great cell service makes for a fantastic location for working remote! The dirt roads after leaving Highway 160, can get quite bumpy but have had low profile sports cars make it in no problem.
- "A lovely off-grid cabin with plenty of amenities. It's fenced in with plenty of room for dogs to roam. There is the amazing view of Mt Blanca towering over the valley, or the inquisitive animals on the ranch." - "I can not say enough about how perfect this space was. The kitchen is stocked with all the basics to cook your meals on-site. There are two bedrooms, each with a queen bed. The loft has a sleeper sofa as well as additional single mattresses that can be moved around the cabin to accommodate your sleeping needs. *Please note that the stairs to the loft are very steep.
Dry air, little light pollution, and high elevation (approximately 8,000') make Dunes Rest an excellent dark sky viewing location. This community is certified by the International Dark Sky Association. The stargazing is truly stunning!
Other things to note
The cabin is located in a gated community that does not allow open campfires (i.e., any flame without an on/off function) due to wildfire risk. We have a zero-tolerance policy on smoking of any kind inside or outside the property.
A propane fireplace in the living room heats the cabin. The fan on the fireplace is also connected to the thermostat and will turn on and off automatically.
*Due to its remote location, there is no Wi-Fi at Dunes Rest. Streaming apps will not work on the TV, though we do provide a selection of DVDs and encourage guests to bring their favorites. Most cell phone providers receive one or two bars of service, but not enough to stream digital content. We invite you to disconnect from your devices and enjoy connecting with your family, friends, and nature during your stay. Offline is the new luxury :)

We are only 4 miles from the entrance of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve and you can enjoy a view of the Dunes right from the house!
Our two-bedroom two-bathroom home has an open layout connecting the living room, dining area, kitchen and laundry area. There is a central bathroom with a tub/shower and the master bedroom has an attached bathroom with standing shower.
Just off the living room you will find a convenient space for coming in and out of the backyard, storing gear, playing with pups and also your single (XL Twin) bed.
The master bedroom has a Nectar king-sized bed and plenty of space if you have extra people who need a floor to "camp out" on or want to use the blow-up mattress or pack-and-play crib available in the closet. This bedroom also has a sliding door that opens to a patio deck with beautiful views of fields, dunes, and mountains where you can enjoy a propane fire table. You have a large closet with iron and ironing board available plus a clean, quiet desk for working.
The second bedroom has its own closet, plenty of natural light, many kids books, toys, baby supplies, a tv with Wii and Roku, and a bunkbed. This is no ordinary bunkbed. You will have a full-sized mattress below and twin-sized comfy mattress on top. In the closet you will find a toddler sleeping mat and extra infant through youth supplies.
The kitchen is equipped with all the tools you might need for cooking, baking, eating and drinking. There are some pantry basics (salt, pepper, oil) but you will want to make sure you bring your own food and beverages. We are on well water and it is oh-so delicious water! As coffee-lovers ourselves, you will have a coffee maker, grinder and medium- or dark-roast coffee available as well as sugar and powdered creamer.
What about entertainment? You don't need much when you are in such a beautiful place, but you will find outdoor seating, a propane grill, a propane fire pit, the TV in the bunkbed room with Roku and a Wii game console with games, a new 55" smart TV in the living room, DVD player and DVDs, a record player and records, many games and books, and some puzzles.
The fenced back yard is the perfect place to enjoy nature while playing fetch safely with your pup. Whether you eat at the picnic table, relax on the swing, or enjoy a fire in our (propane ONLY) fire pit, you will have all the options with the backyard. We worked hard to make it a space that was perfect for our dogs and ourselves year-round.
If you want more space for your group, take a look at our listing that combines this house with a detached loft space on our property, The Dunes Place: House and Loft.
Note: this property is located in a covenanted HOA community and guests should not wander the neighborhood. You will be expected to read and abide by the instructions provided. All smoking and drugs are strictly forbidden in our home and on our property outside. You agree to this when booking.
Guest access
Our private Zapata HOA community is a peaceful area that values respect, conservation and the beauty of this area. You will receive a temporary gate code upon booking that you will use to enter the neighborhood. Please do not wander other roads or into private areas or unmarked neighboring land. Your access is for our home only, do not drive around the neighborhood. The roads are dirt/gravel but easily accessible for all vehicles.
There is a small path halfway down our driveway that leads to a bench where you can enjoy an open view of the mountains and dunes.
Feel free to enjoy the grill and patio furniture (stored in the small room off the living room) respectfully. We have many fun supplies to make your time as enjoyable as possible in all the different seasons. We just ask that you let us know if you encounter any issues and that you return things where you found them, as much as possible.
Other things to note
We love our fur-children and we want you to have a place where you feel welcome to bring your pets. There are no pet fees or additional cleaning expenses. Please be respectful by keeping them leashed when not inside or in the backyard. Additionally, never leave them unattended in the yard. Remember that the sun and sand create hot conditions for dog paws that we might not notice since we wear shoes. Also remember that the coyotes are always on the prowl and porcupine quills are not a fun experience for dog noses.
You will find a poop scooper in the backyard so you can clean up after your pet.
Help us keep our furniture in good shape by keeping pets off or covering with a dog blanket. There are plenty of dog towels and blankets in the same space where you find the XL crate and toys.
Cooling/Heating:
Like most homes in Colorado, there is no central A/C. Instead, the dry climate means even the hottest summer days end with cool evenings. Black-out shades and curtains also help keep the house cool during the hot summer as long as you remember to lower/close them before you leave for adventures. Fans help circulate air all day long to keep the house comfortable. During hot months, there is a standing A/C unit you can use on the especially hot days along with lowering the sun-blocking shades. I promise you will always be able to stay cool and comfy!
Our home is heated with wall infra-red heaters plus two electric baseboard heaters (please remember to turn the baseboard heaters off when you leave) and the woodstove is available in the winter as well. Please do not unplug the wall heaters (living room and master bedroom). There are also two smaller space heaters that do a wonderful job getting an extra boost of warmth if needed! If you have any issues, let us know!
If you would like to use the wood stove you will need to provide your own firewood. There is a brief tutorial video for using the wood stove. You can purchase firewood from local gas stations and grocery stores.
Of course, we are available to answer any and all questions.
You will find a detailed guest manual in the house when you arrive.
Early or Late Checkin/Checkout:
If you would like to inquire about an early checkin or late checkout, please message us at least 48 hours in advance to see if we can accommodate it. Understand we are coordinating checkouts of other guests, cleaning and maintenance schedules. For pre-approved changes we charge $10 an hour.
Any early checkin or late checkout that is not pre-approved will incur a $20-$150 charge and/or cancellation consequence.
Before you Check-Out we ask if you could help us out and:
- Place all used towels and washcloths in a hamper
- Remove any used sheets and pillow cases and place on the floor, leaving the blankets and pillows on the bed.
- Place all dirty dishes in the dishwasher and start the dishwasher on "normal" cycle for a full load, "light" for a partial load.
- Remove the trash bag from the kitchen and place it in the black trash bin outside.
- Scoop all pet waste in the yard and place tied bag of waste into the large black trash bin.
