Pieter phoned before we set out to ensure that we knew that there were no restaurants nearby, and was equally helpful once we arrived, finding a fridge for us. Everything was clean and tidy and the facilities were excellent, with good-quality bed and bathroom including linen and supplies. The TV has a cheaper satellite service than DSTV, Openview, with fewer options, but we were there to rest on a long trip, so we did not miss our usual entertainment and news options. Just two minor quibbles – a helpful list of options such as asking for a gate remote if you want to go for a walk would be good. And the curtain was not heavy enough to mask an outside light."

Please note we have had very little rain and although we try our utmost to keep the garden watered it is a ongoing battle with the high temperatures we are currently experiencing.

The 100 years old Purple House in Smithfield is legendary! Your host, Johann Greeff, is always available. You will find GREAT service, friendliness and if you require I will make you the best breakfast in the Free State! We will part as friends for sure! The Pierneef room is nice and comfortable with FULL air conditioning, oregon floors and high ceilings. The unit sports a queen-sized bed, extra length and private bathroom with shower only. The unit is actually like a private suite. Full DStv is available with 2 easy chairs.

The Gallery room is FULLY air conditioned, fitted with two single beds, two lounge chairs and has an en-suite bathroom with shower inside the room. Full DStv is available.

The Gecko Cottage has FULL air conditioning and can accommodate four persons in comfort. We have two rooms in the cottage. One room has a double bed and the other has two single beds. There is a kitchen and bathroom with gas shower is separate. It is ideal for a family to overnight or even for long term stays for contractors.
Dinners and breakfasts are served inside the house or on the veranda.
