- "This was the perfect spot for a restful getaway. The property is peaceful and the house is stunning. Guest apartment is well-appointed, even providing little extras like coffee, chocolates at the bedside, and everything a person could possibly need for a first-class stay. Host Nancy is delightful—friendly, prompt in communication, and just a lovely person. Her assistant, border collie Wheezie, was sweet and friendly too. Our Labrador was along on the trip and he gives Wheezie 5 stars. We enjoyed hanging out on the covered patio, swimming in the lake, and checking out Lynchburg. On days that we preferred to stay put, we watched a doe and her fawns grazing, swallowtails frequenting the butterfly bush, and even a hummingbird who came up to the patio to see what we were having for dinner! The evenings were a chorus of woodland and lake creatures serenading. We felt rested and renewed when we reluctantly headed home, and would highly recommend this beautiful place. We plan to return!"

Our cozy cabin features a private master bedroom. The two twin beds have a low ceiling in the loft and are accessible via ladder only. This arrangement may not be comfortable or safe depending on age and dimensions of guests so use at your own discretion. The couch is also a very suitable sleeping option.

Kitchen has apartment size (4 burner) stove, toaster oven, microwave and full-size fridge. Keurig with coffee. Pots, pans, plates & cups. Bathroom is stocked with towels, wash clothes, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, first aid kit and hair dryer.

Cellular service is very limited in this area. US Cellular has very weak signal and no other carriers are available. Make sure to note the Wi-Fi SSID and password ahead of your trip. Wi-Fi calling works very well but may need to be enabled in the settings of your device.

Outside, you will find a large, lit covered patio with stone fireplace overlooking Overstreet Creek with the base of Headforemost Mountain beyond.

Overstreet Creek is a native trout stream in a fairly remote and heavily wooded area. The creek attracts an abundance of critters, pests, and dangerous wildlife so please be careful - this is their home too.

Our property has rocky, uneven terrain and our landscaping is a work in progress.

The WiFi in the cabin helped keep us connected to the outside world as needed (no cell service). We explored various attractions in the area, Natural Bridge state park, the caverns, the safari park, and went into Bedford for some antiquing and the farmers market. But honestly, the highlight of our trip was Black Bear Lodge itself. It’s nestled in the woods off a dirt road next to a beautiful little river. We played in the water, made s’mores in the outdoor fireplace, played card games with our kids. It was exactly what we needed and I could feel my stress melt away. Brandy was a super receptive host, easy to communicate with, and the cabin was clean and well stocked with all the necessities. We grabbed some food and drinks from a local store and looked forward to returning to the cabin each afternoon after exploring the area. We will definitely be back to Black Bear Lodge."

Large daylight basement apartment in upscale neighborhood. Back yard of 1.5 acres of wooded trails. Your apartment has wifi access, 40" HDTV, blu ray disc player, full size pool table, microwave, laundry room. patio. All linens and towels provided. The bedroom is cool (but lots of extra blankets and heaters too if you need them). There can be some noise from the upstairs of the house, but we strive to keep things quiet for guests from 9PM to 6AM. Some basic kitchen utensils too. The apartment is about 900 square feet. One separate bedroom, but also two couches and other available single mattress too.

Throughout the cabin are touches of items uncovered during the renovation…old boards found behind the walls are now the kitchen backsplash, a local company cigarette carton from the 1900’s, original beams, records uncovered in the loft can be played on the record player, and other fun finds are scattered throughout the space.

Guests will get their own code to unlock the front porch door before check-in time.

There are exterior security cameras on the property for guest and host safety.
There is absolutely no smoking or vaping anywhere on the property. If found to be smoking, you will be asked to leave the residence immediately and the remainder of your trip will not be refunded, in addition to a $150 additional cleaning fee. This house rule also includes marijuana of any kind.
There are no pets of any type allowed, this includes service animals, due to allergies and health concerns.

My teen daughter and I enjoyed relaxing and unwinding, waking up to the stillness and peacefulness is something we should all get to enjoy. The cabin was clean, orderly, and very eco-friendly. The cabin is about a 10 to 15 minute drive to Kroger, gas stations, and several great restaurants. We enjoyed the scenic drive to the Virginia Safari and the Natural Bridge which was about 50 minutes away, but worth every minute of the drive. There is no TV, so plan on spending time outdoors, reading, relaxing, and just away from all the media madness. We can't wait to take another trip and utilize this cabin! The beds were very firm, but that's just a personal preference in what you like to sleep on. Overall, this place is fabulous and the contact (Steve) was a great help and very neighborly."

This unit is fully renovated and is in pristine condition. Our goal is that you feel rested and rejuvenated from the moment you walk in!

- There is no thermostat in the basement, it is shared with the rest of the house & located on the 1st floor. There is an electric fireplace in the basement to provide extra heat in winter. It stays very cool in there in the summer, however we do offer a tower fan for guests to use that's in the closet to move the air during if desired.

Our basement unit is very comfortable for up to 4 guests (3 adults/1child). Please note that you may hear people walking around upstairs so if you need 100% quiet then this unit, as wonderful as it is, may not be for you.

Security Deposit: a $500 security deposit will be required/due 24-72hrs prior to arrival to cover any damage to the property during your stay. (Deposit must be paid prior to entering the house.) It is extremely rare that we ever have to ask guests to cover costs for replacement of linens or damage to anything, as most everyone is extremely respectful and conscious of how they treat things at our property. If anything is found to be damaged or missing during the cleaning after your departure, we will reach out to you to do everything possible to figure out a solution to what happened prior to furthing holding your deposit. If you don't hear from us in these regards, the deposit will be refunded 7 days after your departure. Reach out to us with any questions about this!

PET POLICY: we do not allow any pets.
SMOKING POLICY: no smoking / vaping / doing drugs anywhere on the property - not inside OR outside

-> If we find that you have violated our pet or smoke/vape/drug policies, you will be responsible to pay a $2,000 fee. We are not looking to make money on fees, however from prior guests blatantly disregarding our policies we are left with no choice. Our goal and requirement is a smoke free property!

If you rent for more than 7 days, we should be able to get you access to washer/dryer. Just let us know if that's of interest!

We are 9 miles from Liberty, making it easy to visit your student. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, we rent our jet skis, and blow-up kayaks and paddle boards. Access to the river is a quick 8 minute drive.

The home has 4 bedrooms, with 6 beds. There are also 2 camping cots available for use.

The home is sitting on 1.5 acres with the forest behind. In the summer, you can enjoy catching fireflies at night. During the day, rent our blow-up kayaks or paddle boards and drive 8 minutes to the river to enjoy them. We also rent our jet skis if you are interested in driving to Smith Mountain Lake. Owners occasionally stay in separate basement apartment with private entrance. It is rare to run into them outside during your stay.

- "The condo is beautiful, spacious, very clean, offers private nature views, and has a big kitchen with all appliances. I was not impressed with the oddly-shaped bath towels, though, some of which had holes and tears. The master shower had very low water pressure, but hopefully that got fixed. Also, the place desperately needs a comfortable, reclining couch. That was a big minus for us, as the two large living room chairs were not very comfortable and the ottoman footstools kept sliding under our feet, making it uncomfortable to rest and watch TV. Good quality overall, but a few improvements needed!"

The beds were comfortable, everything necessary to make our stay uncomplicated was included, toilet paper, soaps, shampoo and even k cups and a few snacks.
