The Lookout is a former wartime signal station which has been lovingly converted into a comfortable and secluded holiday cottage. The Lookout is nestled on a hilltop 100 yards above the Davaar Island Lighthouse with outstanding views up Kilbrannan Sound and across to Arran and Ailsa Craig.

This one bedroom cottage is unique and charming with many features retained from its previous role. On the ground floor there is a wonderful open plan cosy kitchen/sitting room with a well equipped kitchen area s as well as a wood burning stove, providing the perfect setting for a peaceful break or romantic getaway.

Off the sitting room is the bedroom with a comfortable king size bed with heated mattress topper and 100% cotton ben linen. An ensuite bathroom with shower leads off the bedroom.

On the 2nd floor there is a wonderful Observatory from which the outstanding views can be enjoyed through the resident telescope and guests can relax in the comfortable seating complete with ample supply of reading and art materials.

One of the original features retained is an internal ladder through a hatch joining the sitting room and the observatory upstairs (unsuitable for infirm or children).

Leading off the observatory is a roof terrace which provides a secluded place to sit on sunny days or on clear nights, stargazing next to the fire pit can be an unforgettable experience.

All prices include full bed linen, towels, essential supplies (and complimentary local whisky, gin and our eggs!) as well as transfer to and from the island. Crossings are made to this remote island at low tide in our 4×4 with an experienced driver. We will advise on crossing times when you book.

We explored around the island and across the bay as well as walking over the island. Toni & Ned were great hosts and available if we needed anything, especially a lift across the causway giving us extra time on the mainland before the tide turned! A great getaway in a cosy property! This spacious single story cottage which was a shepherds house in days gone by has been modernised without losing it's traditional features. Situated in a very quiet location surrounded by fields and moorland makes it ideal for couples looking for a quiet retreat but also for families . There is access to a nearby beach, and attractive and secluded rocky bay via a path which is easy walking but fairly steep. The cottage is built in traditional style with thick stone walls and is very cosy and warm all year round. The large sitting room is light and airy and has a log burning stove as well as central heating. There is a large enclosed garden surrounded by a hedge affording total privacy with garden furniture and a barbecue. The kitchen is well equipped and has a dining table. The double bedroom is spacious and has a king sized bed with electric blanket and the bathroom is separate but next to the bedroom. The second bedroom has two full sized 3' single beds and is comfortable for two adults or two children. South Argyll is one of the most spectacular parts of Scotland with beautiful scenery, hills, lochs and wildlife.. The cottage is an ideal base for visiting the nearby islands and the Mull of Kintyre. It is an area steeped in history, offering varied activities and is a wonderful area for hillwalking, bird watching, fishing and touring. On the shore can be seen otters, seals and many waders and other seabirds.

- "We had a blissful two weeks stay at Stable Cottage. The accommodation was comfortable, clean and really well equipped, it also felt incredibly warm and welcoming. The garden area was brilliant for our two little boys, building camps, running off energy and chatting to the cows in field next door. The surrounding area is full of adventure, climbing hills to see ruined hill cottages, visits to the sandy beach at Westport and Southend, hot chocolate in Campbletown and a speed boat ride from the harbour not to mention the wildlife, seals, golden eagle, porpoise and dolphins - spectacular! It’s worth saying that we had real issues with our car which made us less mobile than expected, we needed a new clutch and a reconditioned gear box all sorted by Alan Glen at AG Autos, who went above and beyond! Despite the stress and extra cost of this it made sure we stayed put more than we might and were able to relish the incredible surroundings of Stable Cottage with the occasional hire car from the very helpful Kintyre Hire. Mary was always quick to respond to our queries and we felt very well looked after by the community as a whole, a really friendly “wee toon” We’ll be back!"

The kitchen and living room are open plan creating a relaxed space to enjoy evenings in with delicious food and a favourite film on the TV. There’s also a study on the ground floor complete with a beautiful bureau, and a reading area, perfect for lazy afternoons with a good book. Upstairs, the king-sized bedroom and further twin room await with luxurious bedding and an ensuite shower room.

On clear nights, you might want to venture outside to the private garden area which has a fire pit. Rugs are provided to keep you warm and you’ll be captivated by the night’s sky in all its glory away from any light pollution.

There is a fantastic variety of walks on and around the island with the highest point of the island (trig point), the cave painting, exploring the caves and shoreline and so forth. There is also sea-fishing off variety of points on the island. Swimming and snorkeling is fantastic due to the water clarity and a wealth of marine life. We supply a lobster pot with the cottage and we can advise you on where best to try catching your own crab, lobster or prawns (as well as any help with cooking if you do!). There are also mussels and cockles readily available on the causeway so this is a foragers heaven!

Dogs are welcome – but not in bedrooms/upstairs. Please keep dogs on leads near livestock. We have a £25 pet surcharge (per pet).

The well equipped open plan kitchen has all of the modern conveniences, including a dishwasher, espresso machine, microwave, fridge and also a further stand alone freezer. Good quality and ample kitchen utensils and equipment make cooking a pleasure and a handy supply of kitchen essentials are provided including bin bags, dishwasher tablets, salt & pepper, cooking oils, tea and coffee, cling film, tin foil etc.

Caretakers Ned and Toni live on the island, tucked around the corner in the end building of the compound house and are on hand to provide any assistance guests may require, whilst ensuring complete privacy. Ned and Toni keep chickens in the Lighthouse compound and also own three very friendly collies (Binley, Dudley and Nellie).

Dogs are welcome on Davaar and there is a £25 pet surcharge (maximum of 2 pets). Please be aware that there are wild goats and sheep roaming as well as some very steep cliffs so if there is any risk that your dog may chase livestock then we ask you keep it on a lead.

We look forward to welcoming you here to this very unique place. Davaar Island forms part of Kildalloig Estate, a working hill farm. Spread over approx 4,000 acres the estate encompasses over 1 mile of coastline and beaches and rises gradually to about 1,200 feet at its highest point, from where there are many vantage points enjoying panoramic views over the sea to the highlands and islands beyond. The farm is a family-run business and our organic breeding stock includes Aberdeen Angus and Luing cattle as well as pedigree registered Blueface Leicester, Blackface and North Ronaldsay sheep.

As well as being organic, Kildalloig Estate aims to be ecologically sustainable and encourages guests where possible to use best practice in terms of water use and detergents. We have a 20kw wind turbine which provides electricity to power the farm and water for all of the cottages comes from natural springs in the surrounding hills.

Davaar Island is just 3 miles directly south of Campbeltown on the Mull of Kintyre – one of Scotland’s most secluded spots. The journey to reach the cottages on the island makes a beautiful trip itself – with the Dhorlin (causeway) exposed twice a day at low tide.

On the mainland we have a parking area where you can leave your car and we will transport you and your luggage across by 4×4. On booking we will advise on best crossing times. Guests can also consult the BBC tide times webpage for Campbeltown which gives the tide times for the week ahead and is helpful for planning your stay. For longer term tide times the ‘Visit My Harbour‘ website is also a useful reference. Or you can simply email us if you need any further advice or have any questions at all about the journey.

As a general guide, it is safe to walk 3 hours either side of the low tide.

Finally, please be aware that we may have other guests and changeovers to manage so we will advise on all transfer times. Timings must be adhered to for everyone’s safety and enjoyment.

But the flat itself was fine, a bit basic but it had everything we needed, nice and clean, plenty of towels, quiet despite being next to a busy road. Parking was difficult - in theory there is on street parking but there is a Vehicle Hire/Garage business next door so all the parking spaces are taken up by their vehicles. However there is plenty free parking nearby on the Esplanade and probably less chance of your car getting damaged. Location is good, easy to find and town centre, close to Tesco, shops, pubs and Distilleries. The shower was fine, bed was ok, good kitchen. Good value for money."

Part of the reason we chose to come was for its proximity to the two Machrihanish courses but we didn't quite realise how great the beaches are as well!
