- "The hotel and staff are fantastic, it’s in a great position a few steps from the pretty town centre. Our room was very cosy and spotless. We ate at the hotel both nights, the restaurant is run by young girls are so professional and do a fantastic job. The first night we had fish and chips which was superb, but the second night which was my birthday I don’t know what happened. I ordered the welsh sirloin steak, I can honestly it was the most tasteless steak I have ever eaten, I don’t know how it was cooked, but it looked like it had been microwaved, it had no grill marks and none of the fat had caramelised. It was awful, i did tel the girls awards but I really should have sent it back. it put a downer on my night. That’s my only complaint and if you ask would we go back. Absolutely it’s a fabulous hotel."

- "A beautiful converted train wagon nestled in the Welsh countryside. Very well put together with most amenities available. Very comfy bed - small but well sized for a intimate break together. There were just a few things we thought to mention: 1. No WiFi came as a huge surprise. Personally we (and probably most) assumed there would be wifi. We would’ve really appreciated this being explicitly stated. 2. There was practically no communication from the hosts, just an empty email with a pin on a map. No check in or checkout instructions were mentioned before our trip. It felt a bit strange to be staying on their farm with them working and basically being ignored!! 3. The wagon could’ve done with a few extras; oil to cook with, wood for the fire pit outside, and some kitchen towels/paper towels for the dishes. Overall would recommend but be warned about the WiFi! :) "

ASHFIELD COTTAGE is a picturesque stone Victorian cottage, in a cul de sac, situated on the edge of Crickhowell, in the beautiful Usk Valley, with views of the Brecon Beacons. It has a pretty front garden gated from the road, plus a lockable garage with power points and an off road parking space for two cars. The centre of Crickhowell with it's interesting shops, restaurants and pubs is a five minute walk away. Deservedly Crickhowell was the winner of The Great British High Street Awards 2018 for the whole of the U.K.
If you are interested in Ashfield Cottage, I recommend you send through an enquiry for an accurate price, the VRBO calculations are not always accurate. Also, the VRBO system times out after 24 hours from making a formal reservation, so if wishing to clarify points about the property do send a message before making the formal reservation.
COVID ADJUSTMENTS: Cancellation - In the unfortunate circumstances a reservation cannot proceed, postponement or refund may be available. The VRBO details are not completely accurate so please request my Terms and Conditions for full and more flexible details.
The property will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitised between all guests.
Located in the historic market town of Crickhowell, Ashfield Cottage is well situated for the many annual events in the area. Crickhowell has become 'festival city' now holding the Walking Festival in February, The Green Man Festival in August and the Literary Festival in October. Nearby there is also the Hay Festival in late May/early June, the Brecon Jazz Festival in August and every September brings the now famous Abergavenny Food Festival. In July you can take in The Royal Welsh Show at Builth Wells,
The cottage is our home, which we also let out rather than a property specifically set up as a Holiday Let, so if it seems a little personal and quirky we hope this will be part of the charm.
The cottage comprises: a large sitting/dining room with gas fired stove, smart television with incorporated DVD plus a stereo and i player/phone dock. Next door is a new well equipped kitchen with gas hob and double ovens. There are 3 bedrooms (one double and two double/twin) and a family bathroom with over bath shower. Downstairs there is shower room with lavatory plus a utility room with washing machine, Belfast sink, iron and board The sun room off the kitchen offers a cheerful second dining area for up to 8 people opening into the sunny back court yard. The whole house is decorated to a high standard. There is Unlimited Infinity Wi-Fi and we are lucky enough (for Wales!) to get a good mobile phone signal.
Ashfield cottage is heated throughout with gas fired central heating. The west facing front garden is particularly lovely on sunny evenings, when you can watch the sun set along the Usk Valley, while the courtyard outside the sun room catches the morning sun - lovely for al fresco breakfast! A welcome pack, linen and towels are included. While one well behaved dog is permissible by arrangement, the cottage is not really suitable for small children or infirm people - breakable items for the former and many steps for the latter. N.B. The garden is not fenced from the neighbours garden so pets can stray accross.
Notes and further details: The welcome pack contains basics such as milk, bread, eggs, sparkling water and a bottle of wine. General provisions (e.g. tea, coffee, jam and marmalade) and general cooking ingredients are constants in the food cupboards. However it is possible to supply more substantial provisions by arrangement.
We request no smoking anywhere in the house and reserve the right to charge for extra cleaning if smoking should take place.
There is a visitor centre in Crickhowell (visitcrickhowell.co.uk) which can provide details of local activities, events and facilities.
The minimum rental period tends to be 4 nights except in the summer when it is 7. Also there is a £400 returnable security deposit.
- "My family & I had 4 very enjoyable weeks staying in beautiful Ashfield Cottage. The location was perfect for us - close to family & easy walking distance into Crickhowell town centre. Joanna is a gracious & wonderful host, very easy to communicate with & quick in her responses."

The ceilings in the cottage are of varying heights, some of the lower ceilings are in the bathroom and bedroom 2. This is an old building and such features add to the charm and quirkiness of the cottage; however, this does mean that the shower is lower on the wall than it may otherwise be and could make it difficult for tall guests to use the shower; although the shower head is detachable.
Outside - there is a courtyard to the front of the cottage, which is not fully enclosed. There is a bench and garden furniture provided.
Parking - off road parking for one car adjacent to the courtyard, and on road parking for additional vehicles nearby.
The Brecon Beacons National Park, with its breath-taking scenery, has so much to offer to those wanting a quiet, relaxing holiday and wishing to get away from it all. However, if you are looking for a holiday full of excitement and adventure:-
There are fantastic walks - some straight from the cottage door
Wildlife watching
Canoeing
Horse riding
Sailing on nearby Llangorse Lake - which is also a haven for wildlife
Caves, forests and waterfalls to explore, the list goes on...
The Brecon Beacon National Park is a certified IDA Dark Sky Reserve. On a clear night in the Brecon Beacons, star-gazers are in for a real treat. You may see major constellations, the Milky Way and may be lucky enough to see meteor showers - it is truly magical!
There are some great towns nearby full of character and waiting to be explored:
Crickhowell (4 miles) is a delightful market town with a wide selection of places to eat. It is the perfect place to chill out, do some shopping and pick up some unique gifts on their independent high street. You may also like to see the castle ruins and the 17th century bridge over the River Usk, with its odd arches; 12 on one side and 13 on the other!
Also nearby are the larger market towns of Brecon (10 miles), nestled in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons with its ancient cathedral, and Abergavenny (10 miles) where there is an award winning annual food festival that attracts visitors from across the UK and abroad.
Further afield you may wish to visit Cardiff (38 miles) for a wider range of shops or to see a show at Wales Millennium Centre in the bay, or Hereford (36 miles) with its cathedral that contains the fascinating Mappa Mundi, the largest medieval map of the world known to still exist.
Granary Cottage is the perfect base for doing all these things and many more. There are also local village shows and festivals, including the Green Man Festival on Glanusk Park every August. This is within walking distance of Llangynidr.

I wish we had been able to stay longer." - "We had a fantastic stay at Caboodles Cottage. It was clean and comfortable, and had all the amenities we needed (having a place to do laundry was very helpful). The cottage is on a quiet lane that is only a few steps from town. If you've never been to Crickhowell, it is definitely worth a visit--it is a beautiful, scenic town with several lovely shops and pubs, and the people are friendly and welcoming. Whether you're there for a weekend or an extended stay, it's the perfect home base for exploring the area by foot or by car (we did both). We enjoyed our visit, and hope to return someday."

Dog-friendly bell tent site on the bank of the river Grwyne
Footpaths to the Black Mountains; 25 minutes’ drive to Llangorse Lake
Two miles of fishing on site; barbecue, firepit and outdoor kitchen
Sink your teeth into the Black Mountains from Brecon Beacons Bell Tents… this scenic bell tent site is on the bank of the river Grwyne in the national park, so mornings could look like a bacon sandwich and brew by the riverside or fishing along the two-mile stretch.
It’s remote here with the river, woodlands and meadows, but there’s a barbecue and firepit with a well-stocked woodpile to keep the evenings lively enough and a public footpath that leads to summits in the Black Mountains or the Grwyne Valley.
When you’re after a cuppa post-hike, just slide into the covered kitchen outdoors, where there’s a gas cooker and electric coolbox. The tent has a hot shower and toilet, a double bed with a memory foam mattress, a double futon and a tent stove.
Your area is fenced off, not to keep you in, but to keep the livestock out.
Perhaps follow the riverbank down to Llangenny village (15 minutes’ walk), where there’s a country pub with fine ales and good grub, or venture to Crickhowell (five minutes’ drive) for pubs, cafés, independent shops and a butchers… or Abergavenny (15 minutes) for that, and markets too. Otherwise, places deliver food locally – the site will bring it to your tent upon arrival.
There’s parking by the site for those with four-wheel drives and another car park a short walk away (get a lift in the tractor if you have lots of luggage).
- "Great three days. Owner is superb and very helpful. The walk to Sugar loaf mountain from the tent is a must do." - "Overall, amazing experience. My boyfriend and I were speechless with the location, view and set-up. Absolutely beautiful. Will be back again! ☺️" - "Had a lovely time and what a great area to be in. Couple of small things that that would help a longer shower hose and maybe have the shower head directly above the base. lighting in the shower and toilet maybe better on battery operated instead of solar panel as never came on during our 2 nights. Set in the heart of the National Park within the peaceful hamlet of Tretower, this detached 17th century home has recently been lovingly restored and beautifully finished with heirlooms, antiques, oil paintings and market finds. It offers a great base for family and friends to relax on leather chesterfields by the woodburing stove, around the huge kitchen table or tucked under welsh blankets around the massive outdoor fire-pit. This is not your bland, beige, boring, tired holiday home. This home has style, panache, glamour and quirk coming out of every nook and cranny. More recently a gorgeous Wood Fired Hot Tub was added in September 2023 which has been enormously popular with our guests of all ages.
The home is set within mature gardens with views of Tretower Court and Castle, a creation of Sir Roger Vaughan. Step back in time as you step through the bootroom door and onto the flagstone floor. To the right there’s a quirky cloak room with Thomas Crapper WC, butler sink and vibrant wallpaper. Relax in the lounge with its 17th-century stone fireplace, leather Chesterfields and velvet recliners surrounded by heirlooms, antiques and oil paintings. Enjoy the heat of the wood burner whilst watching a film on the Smart TV. To the rear of the house, the locally handmade shaker kitchen is well-equipped with a Smeg induction range, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, coffee machine and washing machine. Enjoy meals seated on antique chairs at the large oak refectory table with French low lights and Welsh pew covered in vintage tapestry cushions. The 17th century spiral stone castle staircase leads you to the dark oak-boarded first floor. Here four bedrooms are all beautifully finished with coloured Art Deco sanitary ware collected by Clair over a three year period . To the front of the cottage there’s the 'William Morris Room' with King size bed and a shower room homing the blue art deco suite. Also, the 'Rose Room' with yellow art deco sink, bunk beds and an Antique painted rose single bed. To the rear of the cottage there’s the 'Laura Ashley Room', a twin bedroom with green art deco sink and views to the hills. Lastly, there's the 'Duck Room' with double bed, pink art deco sink and views to the hills. The family bathroom decorated with oil paintings homes the antique free-standing double-ended zinc and copper bath enjoying castle views. There's also a separate shower and a WC. A quirky hidden gem upstairs is the Sheep Toilet with green Art Deco suite. There’s a small lounge area to relax in on the first floor. Perfect for teenagers or toddlers this has an extra TV, filled bookcase and games for children. The cottage comes with a detached fully-contained annex, perfect for two, known as 'The Cwtch' (Welsh for cuddle). Here twin beds can be made into a king on request at the time of booking. The Cwtch has a beautiful shower room, TV, small kitchenette with a fridge and kettle. Also, a breakfast bar to enjoy coffee with views to the fields, castle and sheep.
You are surrounded by gardens with stunning views, there are several seating areas within the gardens, catching the sun all day and an area with a BBQ and a massive fire pit. Loved by teenagers, the Cottage has an outdoor table tennis table and outdoor dartboard. Outside the boot room door there is a dog/bike/toddler hot and cold spray tap for washing down anything and anyone after a muddy day out. There is ample off-road parking and secure storage for bikes. And last but not least, let's not forget the men's favourite outside facility fondly called 'The Loo with a View'.

Tegfan offers plenty of space for a family or group of friends and is all on one level. As you enter through the lovely conservatory, you will undoubtedly be struck by the amazing views of the Black Mountains; the eastern range of the Brecon Beacons National Park. There is also gorgeous view from the open plan kitchen and living room, and of course the spacious garden. The owner, who lives nearby, has thoughtfully furnished and equipped the bungalow, and it offers spacious accommodation, with three bedrooms, a bathroom and additional walk in wet room, ideal for anyone less mobile.
Within the nearby Georgian town of Crickhowell, you will find a high street reflecting the character of a long lost era. John Evans described it as the "Glittering Jewel of the Vale" in his 19th-century book, ’The Garden of Wales’. Here, there are friendly independent shops and businesses selling local produce and products. There is also a wide selection of places to eat, from pubs and cafés to restaurants and a bistro. The remains of a 13th-century castle still stand in the town, whilst the Iron Age hillfort of Crug Hywel, better known as Table Mountain, looks down upon the town from the flanks of Pen Cerrig-calch to the north. The Beacons Way, which passes through the town, will take you steeply up there, although there plenty of more leisurely walks available, including beside the River Usk or along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in nearby Llangattock. The Crickhowell Walking Festival has become very well-established in recent years, or you might also want to catch the town’s Dragon Festival or the Green Man Music Festival in the Brecon Beacons.
There are events and activities in the area all year round, including festivals of food and drink, jazz and stargazing (the Beacons are an International Dark Skies Reserve). Adrenalin packed adventures nearby include caving, climbing, paragliding, cycling, horse riding and boating on Llangorse lake. A 30-minute drive will bring you to the Big Pit National Coal Museum, where you can go underground as the coalminers did, or visit the dinosaurs and show caves at Dan-yr-Ogof.
Check out the lovely towns of Brecon, Abergavenny, Monmouth and Usk, or visit Wales’ capital, Cardiff, which is an easy 60-minute drive. The city offers a startling range of unique attractions, top class entertainment and quality shopping. Fans of the cult show will enjoy a visit to the Dr Who Experience. Whatever your interest and whether you choose a short break or a longer stay, Tegfan will provide you with the perfect homely base to enjoy this wonderful part of Wales. Shop 1¼ mile, pub and restaurant 300 yards.

- "This cottage has everything you need. It feels like a home from home. Also fully equipped. The views are stunning from every corner. The garden is huge and super nice. Has many birds and squirrels too. So awesome to see them busy while you are having breakfast in the conservatory. The bedrooms are super nice. So are the beds. Our (adventure) cat had the time of his life. Could stay in his own (boot) room. Really purrfect fur pets. It is a super pet friendly accomodation. Was there any downsize? Yeah, the moment we had to go home again. 😿Really an amazing place where you want to stay!"
