We booked the Open Air Big Stone Bath room type so we had a private hot springs bath in our onsen. It was amazing to get in whenever we wanted, but it may be unnecessary depending on your budget since their public (hotel guests only) open air baths are so spectacular. Also, if you don’t book a room with a private bath, you can reserve a time slot for a private one on the hotel grounds. The time slots will give you access to a private bath, steam spa and bathroom for 40 minutes. We did this for the experience and it was a beautiful and relaxing private bath with forest vegetation to look at. There is a downside to the Gora Kadan but it is still 5 stars for me. I mention it next because I feel it is worth noting. When I first arrived I heard some traffic noise from vehicles and the mountain railway from our room. I was initially discouraged by this but the experience at the hotel that followed muted my disappointment. If I knew about this beforehand, I may not have booked but that would have been a mistake and an amazing experience missed. You may be able avoid the noise if you book one of their higher end rooms. I’m not sure. Absolutely make sure you book a room with in room meals though. I believe at least one of the annex rooms does not have in room meals. At this price point, I often do not feel like we got our moneys worth from our accommodation but with the Gora Kadan we absolutely did. "
