We have hosted many travelers from all over the world in the unique structures on the land. The country quiet is only 10 minutes to the quaint town of Sedro Woolley and 15 minutes to city of Mount Vernon, home to the Lincoln Theatre and many excellent restaurants.
This rugged 9 acre property has walking trails, mountain views, gardens, apple orchard and many examples of handcrafted, sculptural homes and structures.
The Stump House ID#1541586 and Mush Room ID#1541712 are adorable little cold water cabins set in a stand of giant fir and cedar trees. Each cabin overlooks a different trout pond. Each cabin has electricity, cold water sink, tea station and wood fired heat in addition to electric heater November through April. The cabins each have a comfortable double bed. The Stump additional has an easy chair that fold out into a small single bed to accomodate a child or third guest. Bring your rain boots fall through spring as the trails get wet and muddy.
Guests are welcome to use and socialize in the beautiful outdoor kitchen located in the apple orchard. The cabins share an outdoor, composting toilet and outdoor shower house. The rustic nature of our property is not for everyone but those who are looking to unplug, reconnect with nature and enjoy whimsical creations will not be disappointed. If you have mobility issues our property is not a good choice for you as the parking area is at least a 100 yards away from the cabins and requires a walk down an earthen trail.

Be ready to make some memories in this 4+ bedroom home with a game room and a large private driveway. The upper level has an open floor plan with a fully equipped kitchen, dining room, laundry room, living room with a fire place, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, one with a jet tub and two decks overlooking the lake. There is a large patio on top of the boathouse overlooking the lake with patio furniture. By the yard is a hammock on one side, a BBQ with patio furniture on the other And a fire pit. There is a back road called Deer Creek that can be more difficult, so it is not the recommended rout.

Outside, there are never-ending possibilities for fun. Relax in the private hot tub, take a peaceful paddle in our 2 tandem kayaks provided, or enjoy a variety of other boating activities. The lake is the perfect place to spend summer days, playing with the kids and swimming. Our western exposure provides ample sun all day. Bring your boat and spend the day swimming, water-skiing or tubing. If you like fishing, the season is open year round. The main species are rainbow and cutthroat trout, as well as brook trout, largemouth bass and kokanee.

The surrounding area has quad trails, hiking, and wonderful biking opportunities. The paved road around the lake is about 8 miles around and well traveled by homeowners and guests. Keep a look out for deer, bald eagles and plenty of other wildlife while you're enjoying the splendor of the lake and surrounding area.

For other activities near by, you can enjoy a round of golf at Overlook Golf Course (20 min away) or Eaglemont Golf Course (30 min away in Mount Vernon). There are also 3 major casinos within 30 to 45 minute's drive: Angel of the Winds, Tulalip Casino and Quil Ceda. While you're in town, you can also hit the outlet mall in Tulalip or head north to the Burlington outlet mall.

Take a day trip to the San Juan Islands by catching a ferry at Anacortes, just under an hour's drive. The San Juans by ferryboat is a beautiful way to experience the Puget Sound.

In the spring, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is a wonderful event to attend. You can get there easily within 30 to 40 minutes. Don't forget your camera to capture the colorful display. The Kangaroo Farm in Arlington makes a wonderful outing, especially if you have kids who will enjoy feeding and petting various animals.

During fall and winter, cozy up in front of the fire with a puzzle, board game or good book after a bike ride or hike around the lake. The mountains and trees take on a fabulous glow under a dusting of winter snow.

Chefs Kitchen: In addition to the adjoining dining spaces and butler’s pantry; the kitchen features a Viking range and oven, 2 Viking dishwashers, a custom built-in refrigerator/freezer, a x-large basin kitchen sink, an additional prep sink in the large island, an abundance of granite countertop space, and various built-in shelving and food storage spaces. The kitchen comes fully stocked with cookware, dishes, and serving items for 24+ guests. Pair that with its bright open-concept layout and views of the Stilly Valley from every window, you won't want to leave this gem!

Dining Spaces: Our formal dining room seats 14 between 2 long tables. The parlor room immediately next-door seats another 6. The dining nook off the kitchen seats 7. The rear outdoor terrace dining set can comfortably seat up to 24 (seasonal). Our ballroom can accommodate up to 80 (tables and chairs provided).

Living Rooms: 4 living rooms equipped with comfy couches, fireplaces, and TV's with cable.

Outdoor Living (seasonal): Large terrace off the back of the Castle with a family style dining table with seating for up to 24 people, as well as several other terraces throughout the castle.

Ballroom – Our 3-tier ballroom features a built-in custom bar with 2 wine fridges and 2 sinks, two private terraces accessed via double-doors complimented by arched stained glass windows, and a private co-ed restroom. The ballroom comes stocked with tables, chairs, plates, glassware, silverware, and more.
Pool Table/Game Room – Equipped with a full-sized pool table, arcade game, large flat screen TV with cable, mini-bar with wine fridge and sink, restroom, private terrace, and comfortable seating.
Poker Room – The poker table can seat 6 players + a dealer. The brightly lit and windowed room also features 4 arcade games.
Arcade Games – Pinball, Shooting, PacMan, Space Invaders, Asteroids, and MANY MORE arcade games to play throughout the Castle. A play station is set-up in the downstairs living room (and a handful of games are provided).
Outdoor Fire Pit – You will need to provide your own firewood.
Wifi – We recently (June 2024) had Starlink internet installed! You can now enjoy premium internet in our theater and on all of our Smart TV's!

While certain features are a bit dated, the size of the castle more than makes up for it. The entire estate is beautiful and the interior of the "home" is beyond impressive. Our grandkids had so much fun running around, exploring, and playing with one another. We used the movie theater for a family talent show and watch a sporting event in comfort and class. The master bedroom and bathroom is beyond ridiculous. The upstairs bathrooms are perfect and there are ample bedrooms. The downstairs/basement accommodations are best suited for kids or teens as there is only one bathroom for everyone to share. While overall the number of bathrooms to bedrooms is impressive, the basement is a bit challenging. Knowing that in advance could be helpful in assigning rooms. The lights are a bit confusing so make sure you take time to read the instructions carefully and reach out to the host if you have problems. They are very responsive. In general, there is no way to overstate the breadth of the experience. We have stayed in dozens of large rental properties in the region and other parts of the country. This castle experience is unparalleled and you can expect to make great memories. It is expensive but definitely makes a lasting impression. We plan to rent this one again in the future!!"

Welcome to a beautiful forest house that sits on 5 acres of private forest land. Just a few steps to the backyard deck that holds a wet barrel Sauna for 6-8 people with a view of the mountain from the inside window. Walk on the private trail (advanced trail) to a private river beach where you can sit by the fire , enjoy seasonal fishing or unwind to the sound of birds and the river flow. Sip morning coffee in one of the many seats outdoors while watching the sun rise. Two new plug and play hot tubs with multi-color underwater LED lights - 4 people per tub (8 people in total between 2 tubs). Grill bbq on the outdoor grill and finish the night sitting around the bonfire making s’mores while sharing stories.

INDOOR

The dining room has a large dining table to sit and enjoy a meal you can prepare with your entire family in the roomy and well equipped kitchen. The living room has plenty of space for lounging and recliner sofas for extra comfort as you take in the stunning scenery of the mountains and nature. Entertainment room has a pool table, Smart Tv, full body massage chair, popcorn machine and game boards/toys for kids.

- "The code for the lock box for the front door was not provided. Anywhere. I had to call to get this info. Lock box code should be provide with gate" - "This is the second time we’ve stayed in this unit. The home was very clean with cute little touches. No complaints about the bed and bedding... again very clear and comfortable. Our plan was to relax away from home and enjoy the New Years games with friends that live nearby, however, we weren't able to connect to the internet for any television viewing whatsoever. I'm guessing the seclusion of the home probably has a lot to do with this, plus the weather wasn't ideal. This could pose a real problem for someone that's telecommuting or reliant on the internet. We reached out to what I assume is the property manager, Vacasa, that made suggestions, which we had already attempted multiple times. The reply times were not particularly prompt, however, they did respond each time with basically the same suggestions. We ended up all going to the local casino to view the games in the sports bar, so it wasn't a total loss. All in all, we enjoyed our time there, albeit without internet connection."

Our 20’ Kodiak Cub RV is the perfect landing spot for those wanting to get away, but not break the bank while doing it! We’re outside the hustle and bustle, but only a 10 minute drive to the nearest grocery store. Better yet, hop on one of our cruiser bikes and venture half a mile down the road to the Big Lake Grocery (the local’s convenience store)! Overlook Golf Course, Little Mountain trails, the Big Lake Bar and Grill and Centennial Trail are also just minutes away. Our place is equipped for both long or short stays to make your holiday one to remember.

A no gas engine boat policy makes the lake perfect for swimmers, paddle boarding and utilizing the provided kayaks and pedal boat. During the spring and fall, forage for mushrooms on site in our old growth woods. In winter, Skagit’s snow birds come and go at sunrise/set to sleep on the lake, watch and photograph them from our lakeside fire pit.

The Salish Sea is an inland sea that encompasses the Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands, and the waters off the Canadian province of British Columbia. Spanning from Olympia, Washington in the south, to Campbell River, British Columbia in the north. Named after the first inhabitants of the region, the Coast Salish people. This unique sea is the largest inland sea on the west coast of North America, between Alaska and Mexico. It is one of the most biologically rich inland seas in the world. Everything great about the PNW (Pacific Northwest) is due to the ecosystem of the Salish Sea. It is a must-see while you're visiting. We are located off the Salish Sea on a lake named Big Lake. Our suite is located on one of the oldest properties in Big Lake. The original house next door was built in 1910. The suite was added on more recently and is the first space done during the current remodel as we work on bringing this old property back to life. This perfect-sized studio has a well-stocked full-sized kitchen. Complete with a microwave, blender, food processor, hand mixer, coffee maker, full-sized fridge, and oven. Plus anything you would need to cook a meal (i.e. oil, seasonings, and any utensil you can think of). Try a recipe from one of the Washington cookbooks located in the suite. Sleep sound on the 1886 refurbished murphy bed. Need extra space for the 2nd guest, lay down the couch for another bed. Extra pillows and blankets are provided. Enjoy wifi and a smart TV with Netflix during your stay. All the windows have privacy film on them. Enjoy the light from outside while still enjoying your privacy. Each window also has a black-out curtain if you want to sleep in or enjoy a nap during the day. Important Things to Note: We are not a pet-friendly rental and please make sure to smoke outside. Please do not place hot pots or pans directly on the counters. Hot pads are provided. The space is not intended for children. However, it can fit an adult and a child. We do not have anything to entertain a child in the suite. But if you are coming with a child please let us know. We do have three children ourselves and can leave some items for the child. We currently do not have an outdoor area for our guests. We are working on it for the future. If your stay is over 7 days please note there are living plants in the suite. Owners will coordinate a time that works for the guests for the owners to water the plants on a weekly basis. We are on a septic system and ask that guests do not flush anything other than toilet paper (and human waste) down our toilet or dump coffee grounds down the sink. Also, there is a glass container under the kitchen sink to dump grease into instead of the drain. Just leave it out and we will take care of it after your stay. Thank you for being mindful of our system. Self-check-in: Keyless entry via keypad at the front door. We will message you a unique code before checking in. (Do not lock the bottom handle when leaving the suite) We live here on-site. The suite is detached from our house. If you need anything we are here for you. The property is in the middle of a remodel. This old 1910 farm is far from its original glory. The building the suite is in will be getting a new roof and new siding this summer. We are working around our guest's schedules so as not to disturb any stay. No materials or equipment will impede your stay. The entire inside of the suite has been remodeled this year and is ready and comfortable for your stay.

During your stay, you will have exclusive access to the entire house, yard, and our lakefront. We offer a lovely swimming area with zero-entry sandy beach, which is perfect for children. This is our family home, and we hope you find it as cozy and relaxing as we do.

The space
Our home features an open-concept design, with the ground floor comprising the living room, kitchen, bathroom with a shower, and closets—where you will find beach toys and towels. This floor also includes a deck with a barbecue and benches for seating.

The second floor features the master bedroom, complete with an en suite bathroom, a laundry room, bunk beds, and toddler beds for your family. This open-concept layout includes all the beds in a single room. The toddler bed has a pocket door that can be closed for privacy. Additionally, this floor has a patio that offers a stunning view of the lake, where you will find two chairs for you to enjoy the sunrise and your morning coffee.

The third floor features a second king bed, a living room equipped with a TV entertainment center, a pool table, and a bathroom with a bathtub. If needed, two twin cots and one full-sized cot are tucked into the corner. Extra sheets and pillows are stored in cabinets and the linen closet on the second floor.

**IMPORTANT** The "Bunk House" bedroom #3, features a twin-over-full bunk bed and does not include a bathroom. It is situated behind the main house in a separate building, accessible from the back porch. Please note that this space is best suited for an adult, a cozy option for a couple or a child accompanied by an adult, as it is detached from the main house and has an exterior door located up a set of stairs from the back of the house. You will need to enter the main house to access the bathroom. If you arrive and find that "cabin camping" is not suitable for your group, we have three cots available that can be set up in either living room.

You will have exclusive access to our yard, decks, and beach area. You are welcome to enjoy our private beach located between the dock and the ‘boat house’. The dock features smooth composite decking, making it ideal for sunbathing and splinter free for the children. We provide a paddle boat, a water bicycle, adult kayaks, children kayaks, a stand up paddle board, a water mat, and several life jackets for your use.

Guest access:
Guests will have access to the entire property and house, with the exception of two locked closets located upstairs. We may need to access the garbage container on or before trash day, which is collected on Tuesdays. We work closely with a pest control company that may need to access both the interior and exterior of the house. We will do our best to schedule these appointments to ensure that your stay is not interrupted.

Neighborhood description:
Enjoy a leisurely walk or ride your bike along the scenic 8-mile road that encircles Lake Cavanaugh, which is nestled in a beautiful forested area. The lake is located approximately a 35-minute drive from Arlington or Mount Vernon, Washington. While you're in the area, consider hiking in Darrington, exploring the stunning North Cascades National Park, taking a drive along the Mountain Loop Scenic Byway, visiting Deception Pass State Park, or sampling the local restaurants and breweries.

Getting around:
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is located 85 miles away, which typically takes 1 hour and 35 minutes to drive without traffic. Paine Field in Everett (PAE) is 50 miles away and usually requires 1 hour and 10 minutes of travel time under ideal conditions. Bellingham International Airport (BLI) is a 55-mile drive that generally takes 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Common Questions:

I hear a siren! What is it for?

A: When emergency services dispatch the fire department in response to a 911 call, a loud siren can be heard echoing around the lake. They conduct a system test every Thursday at 7:00 PM.

Can we have a fire? Should we bring firewood?

A: As long as there is no burn ban in effect, a small beach fire is permitted. Please plan on bringing your own firewood. Our fire pit will be underwater from approximately November to April due to rising lake levels. Please do not light a fire anywhere but in our fire pit.

Do we need to bring drinking water, or can we drink the water provided?

A: Our water is potable and safe; however, we prefer to drink bottled water for taste. We provide at least one 5-gallon bottle of drinking water sourced from a neighbor's well on the lake for our hot/cold water dispenser. It is acceptable to use tap water for cooking.

It seems that the tap and shower take a while to get hot. Why is that?

A: We have a combi boiler that heats both the floors and the domestic water. This type of boiler is more common in Europe, as it prioritizes room heating over domestic hot water. When the system switches modes, there can be a 30-second delay to prevent frequent switching during short tap use.
The advantages include an endless supply of hot water and toasty warm floors during chilly days. Additionally, it is highly energy efficient.
The disadvantage is having to wait for a minute at the sink with the tap running.
