Thank goodness that the big chain hotels were not actually as pet friendly as advertised on Expedia and that I ended up here. It was very affordable, even taking pet fees into account. It was also perfectly located walkable and equidistant between the town center and the battlefields. I was traveling with my two large dogs and was able to exit out the back door of the property, walk across a small grassy area, and start walking down the battlefield park trails. The free breakfast was pretty good and well stocked. The hotel overall seemed to have a pretty big and responsive staff, more than what I'm used to from chain hotels. They were very friendly. The room was a bit dark (aren't all hotel rooms, though?) and the blankets were pretty thin but otherwise no complaints. I brought blankets to cover the beds to prevent my dogs from getting them dirty and the heating worked well so I wasn't cold. Check in and check out were easy. "

Be aware that parking is around the back and you might need to roll or carry your bags across the yard and possibly up some stairs. - "We were on a family vacation for spring spring break. This was the fourth hotel we had stayed at and it was the best. The other hotels that we had stayed at. We had paid over $100 a day in this one was only $69 well worth the money, when we came into the hotel, we went to the room to check the bed for bedbugs. Our house has 4 Bedrooms with Queen Beds, 1 downstairs and 3 upstairs and in the living room is a Queen pull out couch. It also has 2 Full baths, one upstairs and one downstairs. A full Kitchen and a laundry room with Washer and Dryer, Iron and Ironing Board. The Kitchen is fully stocked with Pots and Pans, Baking and casserole dishes, plates, cups, bowls, glasses and utensils. We also supply linens and the start of paper products. The property will be clean when you arrive, however, there is no daily housekeeping service. Therefore, we respectfully request that you maintain the home in a neat and orderly fashion.

Early check in and late checkout (if possible) is $25.00 an hour.

The Gettysburg Retreat is a Pre-Civil War 2 story Gable front house. Built in 1853 it was originally owned by William Steinhour. Steinhour owned the house until 1859, then sold to Henry and Mary Zeigler in 1860, then repurchased by William Steinhour in 1864. It was later bought in 1868 by William Z. Little and then sold in 1872 to James Caldwell. The house was later passed down to Little's heir in 1873.

One thing interesting about the house, is in the first 2 blocks of West Middle Street. You will find several Civil War houses towards downtown Gettysburg, but as you reach The Gettysburg Retreat, the house beside it was the last house in town until you get to Seminary Ridge during the Civil War.

The land Gettysburg was founded on was originally owned by William Penn. Penn would later sell the land to town founder James Getty. The Gettysburg Retreat was the 127th lot of land allocated to Getty in the exchange.

Bedrooms on the first and second level pay tribute to the owners' family heritage. Take your pick from the Charles, Chastang, Earley or Hughes bedrooms. Like the people whose names they bear, each room has its own personality and ambiance.

You will love the location. We are with-in walking distance to restaurants, museums, the national cemetery where Lincoln gave his address, art galleries, shops, and everything else Gettysburg has to offer. Leave the driving to someone else and hop on the local trolley to see other out of town sites including the new national park service visitor center & museum, and cyclorama. You can take a day trip to surrounding Hershey park (50 miles), Washington DC (60 miles), Lancaster PA Dutch country (45 miles), or skiing about 10 minutes south of town.
