The Gettysburg Retreat is a Pre-Civil War 2 story Gable front house. Built in 1853 it was originally owned by William Steinhour. Steinhour owned the house until 1859, then sold to Henry and Mary Zeigler in 1860, then repurchased by William Steinhour in 1864. It was later bought in 1868 by William Z. Little and then sold in 1872 to James Caldwell. The house was later passed down to Little's heir in 1873.
One thing interesting about the house, is in the first 2 blocks of West Middle Street. You will find several Civil War houses towards downtown Gettysburg, but as you reach The Gettysburg Retreat, the house beside it was the last house in town until you get to Seminary Ridge during the Civil War.
The land Gettysburg was founded on was originally owned by William Penn. Penn would later sell the land to town founder James Getty. The Gettysburg Retreat was the 127th lot of land allocated to Getty in the exchange.

NO ORDINARY ADDRESS
Built in the 1840's and newly renovated, this 2-level, 4-bedroom Italianate-style townhome apartment reflects the Federal majesty of the mid-1800's, and the individualistic expressions of post-Civil war Gettysburg. Street-facing windows on the main level are accentuated with stained glass, creating a feel-good rainbow effect in the common area parlor and dining room.
Bedrooms on the first and second level pay tribute to the owners' family heritage. Take your pick from the Charles, Chastang, Earley or Hughes bedrooms. Like the people whose names they bear, each room has its own personality and ambiance.
A major upgrade is the amazing chandelier-adorned spa bath that lets you know this is no ordinary Gettysburg address... This is The LaVerne Guesthouse.
Located one-half block from Lincoln Square and three doors down from the historic Wills House, The LaVerne is within walking distance to dining, antiquing, shopping, and the theater. This guesthouse is appointed with all the basics you need to feel at home, including kitchenware, towels, linens and paper products.
The property will be cleaned and ready for your arrival; however, there is no daily housekeeping service. Therefore, we respectfully request that you maintain the home in a neat and orderly fashion, wash any dishes used in the kitchen and spot clean when necessary.
This is our second home in Gettysburg. We welcome only guests who are willing to respect our property as if it is their own. This is why we will rent only to families or couples. Please do not inquire if you intend to use our home as a “party pad.” We have a property manager who will respond immediately if you ever need assistance during your stay.

Your stay at The LaVerne Guesthouse puts you in the heart of everything Gettysburg is known for. Whether it's sightseeing, nightlife, performing or cultural arts, cinema, vintage or contemporary shopping, fine dining or artsy coffee houses...You can walk there from here!

- "A group of four friends just returned from an extended Gettysburg weekend, including a stay at 322 Baltimore. The apartment was everything as advertised plus more. Rooms were ample and provided plenty of character (especially for a building that survived the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863). Bedrooms were sizable and beds were comfortable. Full kitchen was an added bonus - though we didn't utilize it fully. Living room was comfortable. This was a second story apartment - so navigating narrow steps was required (no elevator). Main entrance and exit was in the rear of the building - but a narrow alley way to the right of the home, you gained access to Baltimore Ave. Parking was most convenient - off the alley way and safe from traffic/crowds. As for as location - you couldn't ask for better - within a block of ice cream and winery - within 4-5 blocks of Gettysburg business or the more touristy portion of Gettysburg. Both directions offered ample shops and restaurants. Rod, the owner, met us with a key (with a 20 minute notice) - and provided a quick tour. Very pleasant fellow - with strong roots to Gettysburg proper. I can't recommend staying here enough. "

- "This place is so wonderful! The location is by far the best part. We walked everywhere and didn’t have to worry about parking. I was a little nervous when we first walked in to see window ACs but it was 97 degrees outside and completely cool inside. Beds/sofas were very comfy and My 2 teen boys loved that they each had their own rooms. If you are questioning where to stay in Gettysburg and considering a hotel, look no further than Lincoln Quarters. We booked a hotel on our last visit and we paid more and had to drive to all of the fun shops and restaurants. We will never stay in a hotel in Gettysburg again! Sandee even called us after check out while we were having breakfast because my son left a small bag on the sofa. Would a hotel do that??? We will definitely be back!"

This high-end rental home in Gettysburg has earned its 5-Star Customer Rating by our valued guests since we opened our doors just a little over 8 years ago as carried on our multiple rental hosting companies.
Downtown Civil War Home ~~~~ 2 Blocks From Lincoln Square, this historic vacation getaway is tailored for discriminating guests who desire an authentic Gettysburg experience, while catering to all your 21st-century comforts allowing you and your friends/family to enjoy exclusive and private occupancy of the entire house.
Our circa 1839 York Street Manor stood as a brick sentinel in the path of retreating Union soldiers on July 1, 1863. Confederate troops camped in these very yards while Confederate General Ewell planned his repeated strategy to take Culp’s Hill (that house only several houses east of here).
The York Street Manor, owned by Cecilia Codori (of the prominent Codori’s of Gettysburg), was where Cecilia and her husband Joseph called home from 1850 to 1865. In 1865, the house’s proud new owner was William F. Baker, Company E of the 87th Pennsylvania Volunteers. It is awesome to think an actual Civil War soldier owned and lived in this house
After Baker's ownership, in 1870, title to the home transferred to another famous family from Gettysburg, John and Catherine Culp, with the road to Culp’s Hill (East Confederate Avenue) just two blocks south of the house.
Memoirs of a 16 year old girl who lived across the street (Liberty Hollinger) recalled she and her father yelling at the Confederate soldiers looting the unoccupied homes across from her's, and how General Robert E. Lee himself and his command paused their horses in front of these houses, surveying their strength. A temporary Confederate grave was located in the backyard of Cecilia and Joseph’s property.
Nestled only two blocks from the heart of downtown Gettysburg’s Lincoln Square, enjoy the antebellum homes along York Street as you leisurely stroll to restaurants, pubs, eateries, retail shoppes and antique stores, including the nostalgic Majestic movie theater.
Our Accommodations:
Each of our three bedrooms has its own private on-suite bath, and the house provides you with not one, but two master suites.
Master Suite 1: The first floor Lincoln Master Bedroom boasts a king size memory foam bed fit for a Presidential stay. Flanking the bedroom is the master bath, extending the length of the room, with lavish amenities which compliment the radiant heated bathroom floor to keep you cozy in cooler seasons.
Master Suite 2: The spacious 2nd floor Codori Master Suite offers you a queen size mattress, full parlor/sitting room and includes a separate living room and a dressing room attached to your spacious en-suite private bath. Fronting York Street, you can look down and almost see General Lee’s army proceeding past.
Bedroom 3: The John Culp room bears its namesake from an owner of the house and of the famous Culp family of Gettysburg. Take a step back in time and relax in your queen size bed and on-suite private bath with marble floor that transports you to days of old, with the original Civil War exposed brick wall set against a refinished cast iron claw foot bathtub and shower.
Antiquity meets modernity in each bedroom which is equipped with wall-mounted flat screen televisions, digital clocks equipped with usb ports (no more charging your phone from across the room) with soft towels and clean bedding upon arrival. An extra pillow top auto-inflate air bed for 7th guest in Codori parlor for a small additional charge.
Relax on the 2nd floor screened in porch, or enjoy your favorite drink on the back yard porch. Bring your own wine and keep it that perfect temperature in our wine chiller located in the separate media room (complete with 46” TV and DVD player to watch your favorite Civil War movies), or treat yourselves to a complementary bottle in the chiller. You can be chef for the day and prepare dinner in our modern kitchen, complete with granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances, or treat yourself to grilling your favorite barbecue in the backyard (seasonal).
Off-street parking is extremely convenient in the three bay garage which sets on the same location of the original carriage barn along Race Horse Alley.
We want you to enjoy your stay at the Historic York Street Manor every time you visit Gettysburg.
We enjoyed all the effort and time spent to provide the unique and special touches that make the Manor a very special place to enjoy family and friends!

- "Our stay at the Historic York Street Manor was absolutely fantastic! The house is beautifully maintained, blending historic charm with modern amenities seamlessly. The location near downtown Gettysburg was great and convenient. Frank ensured we had everything we needed for a memorable stay. We highly recommend this home for anyone seeking an authentic and comfortable Gettysburg experience." - "We had a fabulous stay! The house was perfect for catching up with old friends. The back porch is private and a perfect spot for morning coffee or evening wine. We also enjoyed sitting on the upper level screened porch at night. Loved all the coffee and sweetener options too! Many little touches that made things easier! The house was very clean, the bathrooms are updated and the beds are very comfy! We loved the location - a five minute walk to the circle and campus! The off street parking for 3 cars is also wonderful! We are so happy we’re chose to stay at York Street Manor!"
