Perfect for a small group of guests looking for a peaceful retreat. With AC and heating, you'll stay comfortable no matter the season. And with Starlink internet, you'll stay connected. Skyline Lakes is a private, rustic cabin community, surrounded on 3 sides by Shenandoah National Park, at an elevation of 3,000 feet. There is horseback riding at Jordan Hollow and Wisteria winery is really fun. The community has a catch and release pond, well maintained roads and trail access to Shenandoah National Park (SNP). Stunning rear deck with panoramic views, this cabin has all the comforts of home. Starlink, SmarTVs, games, Keurig Coffeemaker, wood stove, fire pit, charcoal grill and nature galore.
The roads in Skyline Lakes are dirt and gravel, without any guard rails or street lights. The terrain is mountainous with switch-backs, and is impassable in snow/ice conditions, without 4-wheel drive vehicles with chains.
- "Property was remote and quiet. Beautiful night skies full of stars. Good jumping-off point for hiking in the National park. It’s out there, so plan to bring your own food if you don’t wanna take longer trips for meals. Brought our own towels and toilet paper. Driveway is steep, but Google Maps took us rigjt to the street address. " - "Cabin was secluded and in quiet surroundings. Property had two new decks and a brand new charcoal grill. We didn't have the heart to dirty the new grill so we used the smaller charcoal grill to cook our meals."

- "The cabin is clean and cozy. The balcony does face the pond, but couldn't see much of it because some small tree branches block the view. I would have liked to see more of the pond from the balcony. However, walk down to dock and get a gorgeous view of the pond. Caught 4 Bream off the dock as well. If like privacy, peace and quiet, this is the place to be." - "The cabin was clean and the location was ideal. Hardly heard a human sound during our stay. Had raccoons visit a couple of times, but they were actually pretty cute. Beds comfy and clean. I like to experience different venues, so might not stay here again. But, I would give them cudos for their cabin."

We got a little intro and your when we arrived. We loved sitting on the little deck of the Loft where we watched and listened to animals (songbirds and farm animals) and viewed the hills and sunsets. The cottage was everything we needed it to be for what we were there for. Really all you need to bring is food and clothes. Beautiful property. We had several bad reviews in a row, and we are remedying the problems We changed cleaning personnel. We dealt with the mice and are continually monitoring potential entry points. Since then through another website, we have had four stellar reviews. We have included them in descriptions with the bad review… for VRBO customers were having a special rate from now through December in order to say that we are on top of these issues. Thank you!
Romantic...Private...Honeymoon...Anniversary...or just because. You want to get away! Hemlock Hollow is located on 5 wonderfully wooded acres.
Great for Bird watching! Winter is Hawks, Owls, and woodpeckers. Recently a Peregrine Falcon was spotted on Tanners Ridge Road. He Flew Right in front of my Truck chasing a song bird. Vero's and Warblers, phoebes are among our visitors in the Spring.
Hemlock Hollow..is a 2 bedroom Custom Built Log home with Cathedral Ceilings and a Two-Person indoor Whirlpool Tub....and a Hot tub on Expanded Deck!....
Marvelously secluded, Hemlock Hollow is nestled in a High Mountain Hollow next to a Babbling Brook..... The Cabin is located just outside the Shenandoah National Park near Big Meadows. Cabin is a 1 1/2 mile hike from skyline drive via Tanner's Ridge road gate. Foot, Mountain Bike, and Hoarse traffic allowed via this access.
Watch the sunset from the covered porch...Take in nature from the outside breakfast nook bridging the porch and deck...... Relax on deck to catch the sparkling night sky after grilling dinner.... Maybe you'd rather just sit around the campfire....
...There's plenty to do with hiking to Big Meadows or fishing in the nearby private pond. All the activities of Luray and the Shenandoah Valley are just 20 minute drive away....
Hemlock Hollow is... Americans with Disabilities Act, ( or ADA) Compliant. There are 29 Cleverly built-in ADA features. ....The ADA features work well with Families with young Children, 0-5 and toddlers....
We have a camp fire ring a few steps from the Deck. Free use of Downed wood. Within 10 minutes of foraging you will get all the wood needed. This also helps prevents wild fires.
In the past pandemic years we have had inconsistent reviews. Several issues are supply chain related. With hot tubs we have replaced 5 control panels, three pumps, and 1 main panel.
In several instances there has been a lack of understanding. Hot tubs cannot overcome all weather at all times. At temperatures below 50f, if the lid is left off, the tub will cool. At 10f the tub will cool rapidly.
Hot tubs heat at a constant rate. Turning up the temperature does not make the tub heat faster. The tub will heat until it satisfies the temperature sensor. We have several point of use instructions. Guest are responsible for management of the tub during the length of the contract.
Patience and logic are needed in operating all of the devices within the building... Please take a deep breath, read the instructions, or take a minute to figure out to your understanding how something works.

- "Very nice cabin to stay at. Secluded property with plenty of privacy and quiet time. Hot tub on deck was wonderful, very relaxing. Great location with beautiful scenic views driving in and out." - "Tranquil and quiet, the cabin in well used but completely clean and stocked. There is no phone service. The hot tub worked perfect and the view is spectacular." - "Spend the Easter weekend with the family in the cabin, and we got what we where looking for. If you want to get away from things this place is right, no cell service (Verizon, ATT), but there's WiFi if you want to stay connected or want to prevent some meltdowns, sat TV and Netflix are available You're away from everything, off a gravel road with some nice ditches, so don't bring your lowered sport car, and I'm not sure if there's any grub-hub coming out there, so make sure you bring what you need. The well water from the tap is fine. Now, this is a wood cabin, the doors might to close 100% and there are some gaps in the walls and you will hear what's going on in the neighboring rooms. Also, you're in the wood, there will be bugs and critters you will have to live with it, and as you're in a forrest you're not having much of a view but trees and sky. Now, to the reason many are looking for this cabin, yes, the hot tub works, but it's running on 110V, changing water temps will take a while. When arrived it was at 86F, getting it up to 104F took until the next day, it was freezing overnight, what probably didn't help to heat up faster. As a verdict, we expected all of this, hence we enjoyed our stay a lot, and my son is asking when we're going back to the cabin."

- "This place was exactly what we needed. Very clean, very remote and gorgeous." - "Great experience overall. It is worth mentioning that 4WD is a definite must in case of inclement weather. Great stay and would stay at this property again!" - "Nice overall" - "This cabin was amazing! I would totally rent this again! The access road is mountainous as expected so 4WD is a must even if just to give you peace of mind. We pulled up and the cabin exterior is charming! Back “yard” area is great, big fire pit, grill, hot tub, wood etc. The hot tub was so relaxing and useful after long hikes in the park! Kitchen had everything we needed, measuring cup, glass baking dishes and sheet pans. Has all the other basics as well as having laundry which was also really useful. I enjoyed the feel and design of the cabin. The bed was really comfy! Everything was very clean and well maintained."

- "We just loved this beautiful home and the private setting. Most days we had deer and their fawns come eat from the apple tree while we enjoyed the screened porch. The home had every amenity we could hope for and it was beautifully decorated. The owners were wonderful and supportive even though our travel plans got rerouted several times due to airline mishaps. Supplies and a nice restaurant were 5 minutes away and more extensive choices were only 20 minutes away in Madison. But we especially enjoyed the easy access to Shenandoah National Park."

- "Really nice stay for the family. Kids loved seeing all the animals, feeding the goats, and taking the pedal boat for a spin around the pond." - "What a great location! Not far from the main road but in a different world. My wife and I stayed three nights to enjoy the fall colors and to hike in Shenandoah Nat'l Park. Sperryville is five minutes away, the park about 20. The cottage was charming and nicely decorated. We cooked in all three nights as most restaurants in the area are closed during the week. There is neither stove nor dishwasher, but we had no difficulties reheating frozen entrees we had brought from home, supplemented with fresh ingredients from the local store. Walking around the property watching the animals was such a refreshing change from city living, we would love to come back!"

It was clean, cozy and quiet. It far exceeded our expectations for the secluded getaway we were looking for. - "We were very happy with our stay here and hope to book another weekend! We enjoyed just sitting on the deck and just relaxing. This trip was just to unwind from a busy hectic life and this was just the ticket. We specifically wanted somewhere to go that we didn’t need to go exploring and we could just hangout, but still have fun. Loved having all the card games, board games, and especially the pool table. It honestly felt like walking into a home away from home, which was so nice. Thank you for providing a nice mountain retreat, we definitely appreciated it!"

- "Everyone in my group was a big fan of the cabin. There is a terrific porch with a beautiful mountain view, a cozy sitting area with a wood stove, a functional kitchen, and perfectly comfy bedrooms. Jess was a very welcoming host who told us all we needed to know about the property. There is another cabin just a few yards away from this one, but we didn't find that it killed the secluded mountaintop vibe in any way. Don't be afraid of the long, windy, gravel road up. It's well maintained and, at least in fair weather, any car should make it up easily."

Come be wild with the mountains! Our cozy and comfortable family propertyis bordered on two sides by the National Park and only a 1.5 mile drive (or walk) on a quiet roadto foot accessinto the park. From there you are just over a mile from intersecting with theAppalachian Trail and then the Big Meadows area and all of its phenomenal hikes. And while there are some phenomenal sunset views from SkylineDrive and along the trails,it's hard to find a better chance for an explosion of color and vista thanfrom the living room, balcony or patio of Shenandoah Hideaway.
Our home is under 20 minutesfromthe beautiful town of Luray, with its famous caverns and charming Main Street, and only 30-40 minutes from northern and southern automobile entrances to the National Park. We are less than 10 minutes from basic conveniences in the town of Stanley, and just over 30 minutes from Massanutten Resort and on toHarrisonburg.
It is important to mention a few facts first. We have a phenomenal western view that often provides a breathtaking sunset, but that view comes with a steep climb on the road to the house. It is a paved, state-maintained road, but demands precaution during poor, especially winter, weather. Also, there are lots of animals in the forest around the house, including: venomous snakes, black bear, coyote, deer, skunksand many others. Please be mindful of your safety! Additionally, while are doing our best to manage the bugs in the house, this house was built in 1964 and at times they come with the territory. However, we have the house equipped to help you manage them if needed. Finally, the wind and the sun can be intense at times given our elevation and exposure, so please keep that in mind with your belongings outdoors.
All that being said, our family bought this cabin in 2024 with the hope of creating a comfortable hiking retreat for ourselves that we can also share with others. We have added a new gas fireplace, outdoor walking, sitting and storage spaces, and also ceiling fans and new furniture to the interior. We have strong internet service and a well-equipped kitchen and laundry space. If you enjoy hiking, it is a 1.1 mile hike to the AT and then multiple excellent day hikes are available, including: Lewis Spring Falls, Dark Hollow Falls, Rose River Falls, Big Meadows, Hazeltop Mountain and more.
This home accommodates up to four people, per county regulations, but includes two bedrooms, each with a queen bed, and a loft with a large pull-out sofa. There is a full bathroom on the bottom floor and a half bath on the top floor. We also have fitness equipment and outdoor games in the car port, as well as a hammock, fire pit and picnic table on the back patio, with lots of firewood provided.
Our family welcomes you to getaway from it all at Shenandoah Hideaway!
- "My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful, well-equipped home with picturesque Mountain views and unbelievable night sky. The absolute ideal spot to relax, recharge, and unwind. It is a short drive for lunch at The Black Twig in Sperryville, dinner at Paddy O’s in Washington, or to access the Shenandoah National Park and Luray Caverns. We really enjoyed the scenic Skyline Drive as well. The owner was an absolute delight to work with. They have a spectacular patio with a stockpile of wood for you to enjoy an evening by the fire pit. 10/10 would absolutely return to this little slice of heaven. "

Incredible location!! With numerous water features, and a rich and charming history, this special property is the closest you can rent to the Old Rag Berry Hollow trailhead and a close walk to the White Oak Canyon/Cedar Run trailhead. Forget fighting for a parking spot, walk out the front door to the trailheads. “Berry Hollow Retreat” is the perfect escape for outdoor enthusiasts. The land consists of 5+ acres bordering Shenandoah National Park and has 2 ponds and a bold private mountain creek. Enjoy the famous waterfalls and panoramic summit views of the Shenandoah National Park. Watch the sun set from the patio, fly fish the nearby famous Robinson, Hughes and Rose trout streams. Gather with friends for drink and food at nearby Ducard Vineyard, Blue Quartz/Shotwell Run Brewery, and Graves Mountain Lodge. The property is rustic - expect to encounter lots of wildlife!
There are two cabins on the property. This listing is for the cabin called "Birch's Library." The cabin is perfect for nature lovers -- an amazing location if you like hiking fishing, birding, or just unplugging and going off grid. There is one ample sized bedroom with custom twin “captain” beds. A previous owner had them made extra high so he could wake up to views of his beloved ponds. There's also a comfortable futon in the great room. You'll also find plenty of interesting things in the cabin, such as an antique phonograph that still works.
The private mountain creek that runs through the entire property is a tributary to the Robison River. You can hear its soothing sounds from inside Birch's Library when the windows are open. The stream feeds two ponds which have a history of being stocked with trout. You can still see fish in the pond -- and we plan to stock it with rainbow trout for catch and release fishing (will update listing when stocked).
The other cabin on the property is solely for use by the owners. It was originally built in 1864/65 by a Union solider from the 16th Maine Regiment. It came to affectionately be known as "Potlikker House." You can see the hand-hewing marks on the logs made with an adze to roughly square up the logs.
Also, lore has it that a previous owner acquired Herbert Hoover’s dilapidated piano during a renovation of Camp Hoover and embedded its metal frame in the walkway between Potlikker House and Birch’s Library - you will still find it there!
- "Very charming cottage, extremely well situated for outdoorsy pursuits in Shenandoah National Park and beyond. The photographs don't do this place justice: The floorplan is absolutely huge, with a tremendous great room and a very spacious bedroom. The building's exterior is delightfully rustic, while the interior exudes a great deal of mid-century charm. Everything was immaculately clean, with lots of thoughtful touches everywhere. The well-equipped kitchen, heavy-duty air-conditioning, and carefully curated collection of books and brochures made this a wonderful getaway. So close to major cities, while so far away from the din of civilization. We look forward to returning!"

We offer Dish Network Satellite TV and DVD players on both TV's for your viewing pleasure. We make no guarantees on wifi speed or functionality.
Cell Service
-There is no cell service at the cabin. HOWEVER, we have installed a booster antenna on the roof of the cabin. There is an inside booster in the corner of the dining area that offers a weak signal that is only available in the kitchen/dining area. Depending on weather and signal conditions, this is enough to make and receive calls while sitting at the kitchen table. We recommend turning on wifi calling before heading to the cabin to assist with phone calls. We make no guarantee of cell service functionality.
Winter weather
-The cabin is located off a state maintained, paved road. The driveway is gravel. While every attempt will be made to plow/shovel the driveway during snowy weather, we recommend an AWD or FWD vehicle if it snows during your stay. No refunds will be given due to inclement weather.
The home is on a septic system. Please be mindful and do not place anything down the drains other than water, waste, and toilet paper. No feminine products or "flushable" products down the toilet, please. Damage or backups could occur.
There are two outdoor cameras on the premises for the safety and security of our guests and cabin. One overlooks the driveway on the side of the house, and a doorbell camera is located on the front porch. Please do not tamper with these devices.

Checkout: 11:00 AM
No Smoking in the house or front porch. Please limit smoking to the fire pit area. If smoking evidence is found in the house, your entire deposit will be forfeit.

- "We loved our stay at Naked Creek! The property was amazing. The house was clean and comfy with all the amenities we needed. We loved playing games in the game room, roasting marshmallows over the fire, relaxing in the hot tub, and watching the sunset behind the mountains and seeing all the stars at night. Jimmy and Don do an excellent job with the little touches that makes a stay extra special. We used the cabin as our home base for hikes in Shenandoah National Park and exploring the number of caves in the area. It was the perfect place to relax after long days."

- "The house is a brand new beautiful build. It was clean. But it needs some basic things to make the stay better. Our family of 4 with kids ages 7 and 8 stayed here for a long weekend. I do not recommend more than 4 people. The biggest downside for us was there was NO fire pit even though it was advertised in the literal headline for the property. I called to ask for a portable one, they were unable to accommodate. We like coming home after a long day of hiking, eating smores, relaxing and talking by the fire pit but there wasn’t even a table outside to eat at. They definitely should create a path to the creek to take advantage of that feature. Overall the outdoor spaces were blah for us. The kids slept in the loft and liked it. The things in the house as far as towels and sheets are very basic and we are glad we brought our own. There are only 4 dinner plates, so bring some disposable ones because when cooking there isn’t even a serving tray. "

- "This home and property was wonderful. The home is absolutely unique and gorgeous and we enjoyed our stay. The lighting, smells, temperature, towels, and decor all stood out as exceptional. The grounds are beautiful. We appreciated the movie selection, the welcome gift, and the labels for the thermostats. I was relieved to see they provided shampoo and conditioner as I did forget to pack that. We have zero complaints. It was truly as if we had been transported back into the 1700’s. It was so wonderful and we can’t wait to come back. "

The Finks-Johnson House on Strother Run is a renovated farmhouse built by the Finks Family @1900. We have 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a fully equipped kitchen, den, living room and front porch with swing and rockers!! Our property extends across the road, where there is a sitting area above Strother Run. The "sitting area" on Strother Run is shared with the "Little House," at the back of our property, which is rented as well.
The space
Our property is near the edge of the Shenandoah National Forest. There's lots of hiking, antiquing, wine and beer tasting opportunities...but best of all you can just sit on the porch and listen to the water roar over the rocks on Strother Run...and maybe see some butterflies, deer, and other wildlife that live in our area.
WiFi is provided, but not guaranteed. We are remote (part of our charm) and the only Internet available to us is through satellite. Our service is fairly reliable, but can be affected by the weather and is not strong enough for something like a zoom meeting.
No smoking or lighting of candles is allowed on the property. Because of our remote location and proximity to the National Forest, pPlease do not create a campfire or use the fire pit.
We rent the "Little House on Strother Run" through Airbnb which is located at the back of our property. Guests of the FInks-Johnson house will need to share the driveway and the "sitting area" across the street on Strother Run.
Other things to note
The sitting area across the street on Strother Run is shared with guests of the Little House that sits at the back of our property.
Campfires or use of the fire pit are not allowed because of proximity to the National Forest.
This property is in the rural mountains. Our only TV service comes through satellite with Dish service. It has proved reliable for satellite service.
Our internet comes through satellite also. It is reasonable reliable but slow. You can browse the internet, check your email but streaming movies, online gaming, or video conferencing is not practical or even doable most of the time.
Phone service is best by connecting your cell phone to our Wifi network. We also have a land line connected to the internet.

We are the Graves Family. We've been farming this land - the valley and mountain slopes - since 1740. We farm primarily apple orchards with some cattle, goats and hay making meadows. You'll see it all but let us know if you fancy a farm tour.
We are a family of six. Rachel and Jimmy are the Mom and Dad. You'll meet them down the road at our inn and family style southern restaurant, three meals a day for all our guests - along with the hikers, horse campers, fly fisher folk, and our farm team.
We're the Kids - Lynn, Lucky and our wives Tricia and Missy. You'll likely see us down at the restaurant lodge. We are frequently there with our team for meals - and joking with Margie and Margaret who run the Southern cooking kitchen stoves and bakeshop.
Just stop by and we'll fix you up with your next adventure here in our Blue ridge rural retreat.

Get away, relax & enjoy at Moonlight Trail, a rare, family and dog-friendly retreat. The spacious, bright ranch home with new stainless steel appliances is just a short walk to hiking trails and a quick drive to local fine dining/shops, wineries, breweries, and popular hikes. This beautifully-maintained home, surrounded by 10 acres of private space (we share a creek with Shenandoah National Park), has a Weber gas grill, fire table, ping-pong table, and 7-8 person hot tub for anytime relaxation.
The space
Welcome to Moonlight Trail (we offer flexible check-in/check-out times).
We love this secluded and peaceful getaway and we hope you will, too. The home offers plenty of room to relax with family and friends. The main level features a spacious and bright floor plan, with a fully-stocked kitchen, dining room, living room (with 65 inch TV), and sunroom that is perfect for reading or enjoying your morning coffee or tea. There are two bedrooms on the main level – one is a king bed (firm) suite with private bathroom and the other has a queen-over-queen bunkbed (lower mattress firm, top mattress medium). A third “office space” room with a daybed is perfect for remote workers – we have Starlink satellite Internet, which is fast enough to stream HD movies and allows for teleconferences.
On one side of the downstairs level is another spacious king suite (medium mattress) with private bathroom and the other side is a rec space with a ping pong table and a closet full of board games that are great for kids of all ages. Free weights available for those age 18+ (or 16+ with parental permission).
There is plenty of outdoor space for family activities and we’ll supply the badminton/volleyball, horseshoes, bocce, croquet and corn hole. Or you can simply relax in the new 7-8 person hot tub, chat by the fire pit, or sit at the picnic table, chair swing, or any of the benches placed throughout the .75 mile Moonlight Trail around the home.
One of the best parts of Moonlight Trail is the location. The Broad Hollow/Pine Hill Gap hike is hidden in a back corner of the Shenandoah National Park nestled between Old Rag, Catlett, and Hazel Mountains – and it’s a 5 minute walk from our front door. This is a great day hike that offers a surprising amount of solitude and is perfect for hikers of all ages and abilities.
The best times of the year to enjoy the views on the circuit are early spring and late fall when the leaves are off the trees providing nice views of Old Rag and Hazel Mountains. Spring and summer offer green views everywhere you look. There are also 3 crossings of Broad Hollow Run that are not difficult but may require rock hopping in the spring after winter snow melt.

Sperryville History
Located in the southeast section of Rappahannock County, Virginia, along the Thornton River, Sperryville was laid out by Francis Thornton, Jr. in 1817 and established in 1820 when the first deed was recorded. For most of the early 19th century Conestoga wagons were built by John Kiger. By the 1850s, Sperryville boasted two turnpikes: Thornton's Gap and Sperryville & Rappahannock. In the 1860s the Smoot family of Alexandria build a tannery on the Thornton River that closed by 1911. By that time Sperryville had grown to 350 residents with four churches, five general stores, one hotel, six mills, shops, and a masonic hall. The Sperryville Historic District is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Registry and the National Register of Historic Places.
Local Popular Hike Details
Broad Hollow Hike
Mile 0.0 - From the parking area on VA681/Rolling Rd. start the hike at the trail post on the right of the private driveway. Immediately cross Broad Hollow Run and follow the blue blazed Broad Hollow Run Trail on the right bank. Soon pass a small waterfall and cascade then arrive at the 2nd crossing. Now continue up the left back for 0.2 miles and cross Broad Hollow Run for the 3rd and final time. The trail will move away from Broad Hollow Run as it climbs one of the spurs off Sams Ridge.
Mile 1.0 - The trail becomes increasingly steep before making a turn back to the left and passing a seasonal spring. Shortly after the spring are remains of a cabin. After the cabin the Broad Hollow Trail will climb the ridge and turn back to the right. In 0.2 miles the trail levels out and passes through a thick area of Mountain Laurel the arrives at the intersection of the Sams Ridge Trail.
Mile 2.7 - Stay left remaining on the Broad Hollow Trail, cross the upper section of Sams Run, then the Broad Hollow Trail ends at the junction of the Hazel Mountain Trail.
Mile 2.9 - Turn left on the wider yellow blazed Hazel Mountain Trail as it passes through a small hollow then arrives at the Catlett Mountain Trail on the right in 0.5 miles. This section is full of hemlock and white oak.
Mile 3.4 - Continue straight on the Hazel Mountain Trail arriving at the intersection of the Hot Mountain/Short Mountain Trail in another 0.5 miles.
Mile 3.9 - Continue straight on the yellow blazed Hazel Mountain Trail where there are several views between the trees to the west and Skyline Drive. Shortly after passing the best viewpoint the trail arrives at an old trail marker for the closed Hot Mountain Trail and end of the Hazel Mountain Trail.
Mile 4.3 - From the old trail marker the Hazel Mountain Trail becomes the Pine Hill Gap Trail and steeply descends the ridge with Pine Hill Mountain visible directly ahead. There are views to the south of Old Rag Mountain, with the best views from the saddle on the ridge. From the saddle the Pine Hill Gap Trail is at its steepest before arriving at Pine Hill Gap.
Mile 6.1 - At Pine Hill Gap turn left following the old Pine Hill Gap forestry road. The forestry road is not maintained and can be boggy and overgrown. Stay on the forestry road until it ends at the Pine Hill Gap Trail sign and Rolling Rd.
Mile 6.4 - Continue along Rolling Road past several trailers for 0.3 miles back to the parking area at the Broad Hollow trailhead.
Old Rag Hike - NEED TICKET IN ADVANCE
search on hikingupward DOT com
The Old Rag Mountain hike in the Shenandoah National Park is one of the most popular hikes in the mid-Atlantic region. With many spectacular panoramic views, and one of the most challenging rock scrambles in the park, this circuit hike is a favorite of many hikers. But be prepared for the crowds. This hike gets a star rating for solitude, so the best time to enjoy Old Rag is during the week when there are significantly fewer people. In 2020 the Saddle Ridge Trail was re-routed to the main parking area on SR 600 Nethers Road.
Important: From March 1 - November 30, 2022, visitors to Old Rag Mountain, including hikers on the Saddle, Ridge, and Ridge Access trails, will need to obtain an Old Rag day-use ticket in advance, in addition to a Park entrance pass. Find out more information on our Old Rag day-use ticket FAQ page. Purchase Old Rag Day-Use Ticket Online
The circuit hike listed here follows the popular clockwise loop, however many hikers prefer to do this loop counterclockwise, thereby tackling the rock scramble at the Ridge Trail on the downhill. Either way, the rock scramble can be challenging, being both steep, and requiring climbing through cracks in the rock. If hiking on the weekend, the best time to arrive is by 7 a.m. beating the crowds.
Note: As of 2020, there are now three parking areas on SR600/Nethers Rd: Lot 1 - Upper Lot for horse trailers and RV's, although cars can also park here, the entrance for this one is about 100 yards beyond the entrance to the Lower Lot. Lot 2 - Lower Lot, this is now the main parking lot for Old Rag. Lot 3 - Overflow Lot, only used now when the new Lower Parking Lot is full.
Mile 0.0 - The hike begins on the Ridge Trail (blue blazed) to the left of Ranger Station at the new Lower Parking Lot. Pass an Information Kiosk and cross a small bridge to begin the climb (gaining 460') to the intersection of the Ridge Access Trail
Mile 0.8 - At the intersection of the Ridge Access Trail, bear left staying on the Ridge Trail. The trail will gradually increase in grade and make nine switch backs before reaching the first of many view points. From this first vista to the west, the Ridge Trail will become more rocky.
Mile 2.5 - Arrive at the main easterly vista on the ridge. From here the trail becomes a rock scramble with narrow passages and several spots requiring hand over hand climbing. From the easterly vista on the ridge start up the rock scramble, with the first obstacle a 12ft deep small crack in the rock. At the bottom of the crack continue out to the left. Follow the blue blazes passing around the easterly side of the ridge and through another crack where the trail meets a small cliff. From here, the trail will become increasingly steep going through a small cave, then arriving the minor summit where the trail turns left. Be careful to follow the blue blazes, as there are several false trails that lead to overlooks. After passing around the minor northerly summit, the trail is less steep but still requires rock-hopping for most of the remaining 0.3 miles to the true summit where there are several points with 360° views.
Mile 3.6 - Arrive at the Old Rag Summit, elevation 3291'.
Mile 4.2 - Descend south along the Ridge Trail for 0.6 miles to the intersection of the Saddle Trail and Byrd's Nest Shelter. Turn right descending on the blue blazed Saddle Trail. In 1.0 miles reach the Old Rag Shelter.
Byrd's Nest Area Scrambling:
For some additional rock scrambling, consider a side trip near the Byrd's Nest Shelter to see the Balance Rock that you can see from Old Rag and the Saddle Trail. About 20 yards from the shelter is a series of rocks worth climbing and to get a bearing (about 300 degrees with our compass pegged on North) to the Balance Rock, about 0.2 miles away. This will involve some bushwhacking, follow a visible path for about 50 yards or so beyond the first set of rocks and it will bear to the right near a campsite and take you below a cliff and the Balance Rock will be visible to the North West, mostly bushwhacking from this point to the Rock. We did not see an easy way to climb Balance Rock but with a little bit of effort we were able to get on the rock just below it for some great views. The coordinates for Balance Rock: N38.5505 W78.3236, the coordinates for the Byrd's Nest Shelter: N38.5501 W78.3211
Mile 5.2 - Old Rag Shelter, both shelters are available for day use only. From the Old Rag Shelter the trail widens and follows a forestry road for the 0.4 miles to the intersection of the Berry Hollow Fire road (left), Old Rag Fire Road (straight), and Weakley Hollow Fire Road (right).
Mile 5.6 - Turn right downhill on the yellow blazed Weakley Hollow Fire Road. In 1.2 miles pass the Robertson Mountain Trail, then in another 200 yards the Corbin Hollow Trail. Continue along the Weakley Hollow Fire Road back to the intersection of the Ridge Access Trail
Mile 8.0 - Arrive at the Ridge Access Trail. This intersection has a small parking area that has been closed for many years. Turn right uphill on the Ridge Access Trail.
Mile 8.4 - Turn left on the Ridge Trail back towards the Lower Parking Lot.
Mile 9.1 - Arrive back at the new Lower Parking Lot on Nethers Road.

Relax with the whole family in this serene setting along a native brook trout stream where nature's sounds prevail. Most every room has wonderful views of the Hazel River and the Appalachian Mountains (Shenandoah NP) beyond. The river's clear waters invite fly fishing, and swimming holes abound as do nearby hiking trails in SNP (favorites, Old Rag and Marys Rock).
Noted restaurants are nearby as are many vineyards and antique stores.
(County code encourages multi-day [weekly/monthly] stays).
The space
Be sure to explore and appreciate our home and our landscape on both sides of the river. The spacious living area welcomes you with its airy ambiance and large windows that invite the beauty of the outdoors inside. Great books in our library and board games (in cabinets below) will inform and entertain, and on rainy days, the dvd collection, upstairs and downstairs, should help, as should the portable player and cd collection (in cabinet). Our kitchen is well equipped to prepare most any meal which then can be enjoyed in the breakfast nook or on the spacious side deck or in the formal dining room (birthday supplies in chest). The fireplaces add warmth and light as we try to use them conservatively to save resources. We especially enjoy the river and the surrounding landscape (a trail from the house [beside the large rhododendron] parallels the river upstream) which are full of beauty and wonder, with outstanding views of Old Rag and neighboring mountains and valleys; the river's cool waters refresh on those hot summer days. The Hazel River Trail in the Park (upstream a half mile, on left before the bridge) and others nearby (e.g. Sam's Ridge, Broad Hollow, Pine Ridge Gap...) make for interesting circuit hikes. Mary's Rock and Old Rag, also in the Park, are celebrated favorites nearby.
We are less than 30 minutes from the Thornton Gap entrance to SNP and less than five minutes from Sperryville (noted restaurants along the Thornton River, country store grocery, breweries, distillery, antique gallery...) and less than 15 minutes from little Washington (The Inn at Little Washington [five star], galleries, Trinity Episcopal, ...). Off the Grid (solar-powered chargers) is a favorite as are Sharp Rock Vineyards and Belle Meade Farm (fresh eggs and meats).
Guest access
As guests, you are welcome to use and care for the entire house and property; neighbors are friendly and support appreciation of the larger landscape.
And, be sure to take your time, to fully enjoy the rich variety of surrounding life, especially along the river.
To access the river, two paths may be evident. Be sure watch your footing especially along the steeper path slightly upstream. Weather and river dynamics can make access a bit challenging.
Be careful and enjoy.
Other things to note
We feel so lucky, so blessed to live where we do, along a beautiful river, at the base of spectacular and old (over a billion years) mountains; Shenandoah National Park trails are just upstream, a few minute hike away. Please come and gather and enjoy and appreciate. As we appreciate, we'll take better care of each other and the natural world which sustains all of us, all life.
The county code encourages long stays; feel free to consider staying the week, the month or longer; please call.
Thank you for your consideration.

Other things to note
*No pets allowed. (Sorry!)
*There is one security camera monitoring the front entrance.
*The house is up a significant driveway. In the case of inclement weather (snow, sleet, ice, etc), we recommend a vehicle with four-wheel drive. Two-wheel drive vehicles should have no problem getting up in normal weather, but may have to work to get up the steep climb.
*The parking pad can easily fit 4 cars, potentially more if you don’t mind some maneuvering.
*We offer high-speed satellite Internet with Starlink, which can stream HD movies and allow for teleconference. The connection may occasionally cut out for a few seconds at a time, but is largely suited for streaming, zooms meetings, and telework. Harsh weather can sometimes interfere with the Internet, so please plan accordingly.
*Verizon and T-Mobile have workable LTE reception at this property, but it is an AT&T dead zone.
*All are welcome here. This listing is friendly to the LGBTQ+ community, immigrant communities, liberals, conservatives, people who want to ignore politics altogether, people of any and all religious persuasions, races, ethnicities, etc. We really don’t care as long as you’re nice, take good care of the property, and respect the community.
Make some memories at this unique and family and dog-friendly place. Relax in the hot tub after hiking Old Rag. This rustic redone farmhouse with modern amenities is a short walk to the trailhead for the hike up Old Rag, a short walk to Hughes River fishing, and a short drive to Sperryville, historic Madison, wineries, breweries and other Shenandoah National Park hikes. The house is surrounded by acres of fenced open space, with a front porch, deck, weber gas grill, and 360 Mountain Views.
The space
We can accommodate 10 people. If your party is larger than 10 you can consider renting our other property, next to this one, which also accommodates 10. You can find this second property looking under my profile.
Our house is on the road to the Old Rag trailhead. It's a short walk to the Old Rag parking lots, and a few minutes farther to the trailhead, so you can start your Old Rag trek bright and early! It's also a short walk to the Hughes River, known for trout fishing, and to other hiking trails. At the house itself you will have plenty of space to relax with family and friends. The house has four bedrooms, a dining area, a large living room, a wood-burning stove in the family room, and three fully renovated bathrooms.
The property is in the area known as Nethers, with a Sperryville address, and is a 15 minute drive to the historic town of Sperryville itself. From there you can head to the Skyline Drive, Luray, and the Shenandoah River for water activities. We're also less than a half an hour by car to the White Oak Canyon trail lower parking lot. Wineries and breweries are also just a few minutes away.
The house is about 2500 sq ft., with central heat and air conditioning, a hot tub, dishwasher, washer, and dryer. You can see surrounding mountains from almost all its rooms. The first section of the ground floor is an open concept. There is a family room as you enter, with a 55 inch flat screen TV to stream your favorite shows. From there you have a cozy space to relax in two chairs in front of the wood burning stove, while you chat with whoever is in the bright and airy kitchen that follows. On the shelves you will find board games and books.
We love to cook, and we like to keep a well-stocked kitchen for our guests. You will find everything from cast iron cookware, to pots and steamers and non stick pans, to baking utensils such as hand mixers, baking sheets, rolling pins, muffin pans, to silicone pads, to other utensils such as knives, microplane graters and glass containers, to serving and salad bowls. There are also mugs, plates, bowls, and flatware.
We also provide some kitchen essentials, including salt, pepper, a variety of spices and rubs, Spanish extra virgin olive oil, Italian Modena vinegar, baking soda, ground Colombian coffee, organic sugar, and an assortment of black and herbal teas. We also provide an electric kettle, a moka pot coffee maker, an electric coffee maker that does not need paper filters, table mats, paper towels, sponge, dishwasher and dish detergent, baking paper and aluminum foil. We do not provide ziplock bags as we are trying to minimize plastic.
Off the stove room you find a full bathroom, just renovated, the laundry room, and access to the side deck. We provide laundry supplies should you need to wash your clothes. You will also find there lawn games, including bocce, croquet, badminton, bean toss and lawn golf.
Off the other side of the stove room you have access to the old log cabin section of the house. There is a very large fireplace with two large couches. It also has the dining area, with a large art deco table that can sit up to 12 people.
Firewood: On request, we can provide a rack or half rack of firewood for a fee. You can use it for the woodstove, or for the fire pit outside (weather permitting).
Upstairs you will find four bedrooms and two bathrooms. All the bedrooms have mirrors in them, and all have mountain or pasture views from at least one of the windows.
At the top of the stairs is El Sueño (the dream), a king bedroom with two antique sets of drawers, and a chair and a small desk that you can open and use as a table for your laptop. El Sueño has three windows facing the front and the east of the house, and shares a Jack and Jill, freshly retiled bathroom with tub. Along the hallway, also on your left, is the second bathroom. This one features Spanish tile, an extra large shower with two shower heads and a hand shower, an antique vanity, a talavera sink and a skylight. At the end of the hall is the La Vista (the view) queen bedroom, with my favorite view of the mountains from the back of the house. La Vista has a reading nook with a bench and pillows, and shares the Jack and Jill bathroom with El Sueño bedroom.
To the right of the stairs you find two more cozy queen bedrooms. The first one is named after our neighbor’s pony, Five, whose paddock you can see out of the window. Five has a queen bedroom and a sofa bed, full size, that we can have ready for you as a bed if you let us know in advance. Five has a closet with shelves where you can put away your things. The other bedroom, el Nido (the nest), just across the hallway from Five, faces the back of the house. It also has a queen bed, and an L-shaped antique cushioned bench. El Nido has a closet with shelves and space for your belongings.
Outside the kitchen, to the left, there is a screened sun porch with a sofa, chairs and views. Off the porch, on the large raised deck, is a large dining table with eight chairs, and a Weber grill (we provide tongs for the grill and utensils to scrape it). The deck wraps around two sides of the house, and you can access the main floor bathroom from the deck through a side door to the laundry/bathroom area. On the deck you can sit in the hot tub and see the mountains, usually the neighbors’ cows and sheep, and sometimes a llama. For stargazing, it gets pretty dark in the area, with almost no lights on the hills and very few street lights around.
There is plenty of space for outdoor family activities, and a smaller fully fenced area in the back of the house, suitable for a dog to run around in. Come visit!
Other things to note
If you would like to visit the area with family or friends and have a larger group than we can house, please know that we own the house next door, and it is available for rent at airbnb.com /h/oldragtrailhead. You can also find this other property under my profile. Please contact us for any questions.
Other things to note:
*We have Starlink satellite Internet, which is fast enough stream HD movies and allow for teleconferences. The connection, however, does occasionally cut out, especially in bad weather. If the Internet does cut out for more than a few minutes please contact us. Please do not reset it, as the system will then need to be reconfigured, and we will need to send a technician who may not be available right away.
*There is very limited cell phone reception in the area. Please plan accordingly.
There are occasional power outages, which can happen in bad weather, from trees downing lines, and from equipment failures. The local power cooperative works to minimize and manage outages, and most such outages last only a few hours.
