Established over forty years ago, Casa Ginjeira enjoys one of the mountain’s prime locations, in a peaceful south-facing valley, yet close to the local amenities. The house is set in a large garden surrounded by olive and citrus groves and ancient terraces that are still traditionally farmed, against a backdrop of cork oak forests. While sitting on the veranda or by the pool you will be able to relax in total seclusion, and yet the nearest restaurant is actually a short walk away, up a country track. Monchique is the perfect holiday location. The region is popular with walkers, cyclists and lovers of nature, as well as people who come for the gastronomic specialities of the area. The numerous excellent restaurants specialise in black pork dishes as well as favourites such as chicken piri-piri. You needn’t miss out on any of the famous beaches of the Algarve, as both the south and west coasts are equally accessible from our house, and when you return, the countryside provides a green refuge from the busy resorts.

The pretty market town of Monchique is just 4km away, with more restaurants and bars and a large supermarket where you can buy anything you may need. Further afield you have the choice of two coastlines within easy reach; the glamorous and busy South, with its golf courses and nightlife or the wild and spectacular West, with world class surfing. There are many famous golf courses also within easy reach. There are also historic towns to explore, and there are miles of empty lanes that wind around the valley to be explored. Wherever you go it is a pleasure to return to our peaceful valley, where the air is filled with the scent of eucalyptus and orange blossom and nothing but the sounds of gurgling streams, birdsong, chirping crickets and frogs.

When you first arrive you come to the large courtyard, with a typically Portuguese pavement of marble mosaics in a wavy pattern depicting lemons. To the side is a high retaining wall of beautiful granite stones, broken by a waterfall that trickles into a basin. This is the rock that the mountain is made from, and everywhere the slopes have been formed into wide terraces, mostly by manual effort without machinery, to create the food-basket of the Algarve, where the rich fertile soil is watered by numerous streams.

The feathery leaves of some mature jacaranda trees can be seen over the wall on the other side of the courtyard, their brilliant blue blossoms tempt you down into the garden below. When you look over it, you can see down into the first of many terraces that make up our garden, melding imperceptibly into the surrounding countryside, so that the neighbours’ donkeys, sheep and cows seem to be grazing on our land. The side of the house facing the courtyard resembles a traditional Portuguese country house, with decorative pediments in yellow ochre over the door and windows.

Casa Ginjeira retains the gracious style and comforts of an established home, with antiques and artworks collected over the years, whilst it has recently been thoroughly modernised with new bathrooms and beautiful terracotta floors which are heated when required and cool in the summer. The sitting room is furnished for comfortable evenings around the log fire, and has modern entertainment systems as well as a host of books. The well-equipped kitchen, decorated with traditional Portuguese tiles, opens onto the dining room, with a large dining table of African hardwood. The main house has two bathrooms with baths and walk-in showers and four spacious bedrooms all with terracotta tiled floors and enough space for a desk, an armchair, and other comforts that make a bedroom more appealing. All the rooms have french windows, with louvred shutters, that open onto the wide veranda, giving the house a colonial feel. With the french windows open and the curtains drawn to let in the breeze, the rooms are kept cool by the shade under veranda’s pretty tiled roof, and their high ceilings with ceiling fans ensure the air circulates within.

Further accommodation is provided by the 60 sq.m. Pool Cottage. A double bedroom on a mezzanine has an ensuite shower bathroom, and below this a further shower bathroom and a large open-plan living area with underfloor heating, a full size kitchen and enough seating around the open fire for twelve, or alternatively to bed-down two extra people. The Pool Cottage would be ideal for a couple who want to be a little separate from the rest of the house, or a family with children, or else it can be used as a large living room, being close to the pool.
For smaller parties who do not need the extra space we can also be flexible on price, offering a discount for mid-season or last minute bookings where the Pool Cottage is not required.
Please note that the Pool Cottage will never be rented separately while you are renting the main house. The place is exclusively yours - and so is the pool.

The 10x5metre swimming pool is built behind the main house so as not to spoil the peace of the garden in front. It is on the level of the rooftop, and so it also enjoys magnificent mountain views. You reach it by climbing a flight of curved steps in the courtyard. It has plenty of places to sunbathe between dips, and shares its broad terrace with four olive trees, which also provide the shade for another place to eat. There is a large built-in barbecue with a sink and running water. At the other end of the pool is the Pool Cottage with its kitchen, so you can easily prepare the food close by.

The extended season ensured with underfloor heating inside the house is also extended to the swimming pool, which is heated by a heat pump powered by our own solar electricity. From April to October pool heating is included in the price of your rental. This is a great benefit, as many holiday rentals charge extra for pool heating.

Above the pool is a decked area surrounded by flowerbeds providing another place to relax on sun-loungers under grapevines clambering over a rustic pergola. Our large garden has many more places to relax; in a hammock slung between jacaranda trees; amidst lavender and olive trees; or way down in the orange grove, where you can gather armfuls of sweet juicy fruit. Water runs through the garden in a rill, the air is cooled by fountains and waterfalls, and there is a large semicircular fish pond presided over by a garden spirit sculpted into the wall.

The garden extends down the valley, and a natural spring wells up forming a stream that falls into a pond surrounded by watercress.

Wherever you wander in the garden you will always return to the veranda, which is an outdoor room with many uses; enjoy lunch around the dining table in the shade; take a siesta in one of the recliners; watch the valley fill with golden sunlight as you take drinks in the evening and at night gaze up at the sky filled with countless stars.

An unspoiled picturesque part of the Algarve that enjoys breathtaking views, irresistible local charm and excellent regional food. A three week holiday in 1993 travelling the length and breath of the Spanish and Portuguese coastline was enough to realise Monchique must be one of the most idyllic places the world has to offer. I fell in love. A month later I was the proud owner of a broken down vacated farm house – My retirement project! We moved from the bustle of Hong Kong and started the decade build in 2000. The property is surrounded by wild trees& land with an abundance of flora & fauna. A paradisefor nature lovers, trekkers, conservationists & orienteers. Its remote roads and tracks offer a fantastic cycling and runningenvironment. The garden started off as a front lawn but soon grew and grew as I couldn't resist developing it with my 25 year old digger !! Dry stone wallsseparatethe different lawn tiers which replicate the traditional walls farmers used to section off their crops. The property itself was built around an existing old farm house constructed from granite and mud visible by thesheer thickness of the walls (up to 3 feet thick). Where possible, natural locally sourced materials were used hoping to create a timeless Algarvian environment. Being at an altitude of 600 meters, the sun can be very powerful during the day but offers cooler evenings and is that much fresher, and generally cooler than the coast, which can be very hot and muggy mid summer. Evenings can be spent sitting around the open outdoor fire and you have the advantage of cooler sleeping conditions. Many evenings have been spent simply star gazing, waiting for the shooting stars and spotting satellites moving across the crystal clear skies & listening to the crickets chirping happily in the background.

- "We spent a week in November relaxing is the very comfortable home. All the rooms are all spacious and well appointed - perfect for relaxing and enjoying the great views over the rolling landscape. Nigel was always responsive and provided excellent information and tips. Intermarche for shopping is very close and has everything you need. The local restaurant is O Luar a Foia, literally up the hill and well worth the climb up. After enjoying the excellent local food you have an easy stroll back down! We really enjoyed the hiking to Foia, Picota and the hills above the Convento (well worth the visit). Trips to the coast were relatively easy and also enjoyable, particularly the lighthouse at Sagres - more great walking. All in all, a lovely time spent in a lovely area."

- "We stayed two weeks with our two teenage boys and Granny. Had a super time, the villa was perfect in every way, the beds very comfortable and linen and towels top notch. The lounge is well furnished and we used our Netflix account on the TV though there was a good selection of English programs as well. The kitchen is well equipped and the outside entertainment area was used every day. The views from the villa are quite something, literally, from every window and we sat out late at night watching the sparkling lights along the coast. The kids were in the pool for hours at a time even Granny went in. The kids made friends with the neighbours black lab Duke. We had several barbecues and ate at some of the restaurants that the owner recommended, all were very reasonable with good food, friendly service, it was nice that we were not rushed, very relaxing, our favourite was the wild boar and an black pork, the kids loved the chicken piri piri, Granny liked the fresh fish. We spent quite a few days visiting some of the west coast beaches, Arifana was the best for body boarding but all of them are unspoiled and not too crowded. We spent a day in Lagos which is a very nice town with a lovely marina that do all kinds of boat trips. All in all the villa was very good value for the excellent quality provided and so we have decided to come back next year. We would certainly recommend this villa for any one wanting a quality holiday at a very reasonable price. Well done Nigel"

- "Fantastic place, the garden and the location are just marvelous. A bio-pool with two ponds for the water cleaning and many frogs, dragonflies, flowers and nature in and around those ponds, beautiful unchlorinated water, amazing natural beauty. The villa is very spacious, the only downside is the really bad lighting when its dark. Probably to save energy the owners have installed really weak LED-lights, you cannot even read when its dark, they definitely overdid the „saving“, thats a pity actually. Otherwise perfect experience, especially if you want total privacy, to unwind in your own beautiful nature-space."

The delightful town of Monchique, which is only 2 minutes drive from the villa, has a pretty central square with street cafes in which to while away the time and people watch. There are beautiful gardens to admire and narrow historic streets to explore. By the way, parking is free everywhere in Monchique including the underground car park! There are several supermarkets for you to stock up on supplies, 3 butchers, numerous cafés and a tea room serving delicious home made food, two banks with cash points, two petrol stations, 2 chemists, wine shop, gift shops and newsagents selling foreign papers. Recently opened is the new Intermarche supermarket mall, with a selection of shops, plenty of parking and ideal to stock up your holiday provisions.

There are many excellent yet inexpensive local restaurants, some of the best are within walking distance of the villa. You will be tempted by the delicious regional fare, chicken piri-piri, black Iberian pork, wild boar with plums, lamb casserole, chicken with cherries, pork and prawn cataplana, stuffed squid, grilled fish, local cured ham and smoked sausage, honey and marzipan sweets just to name a few, all are locally produced. There is an amazing sellection of wines and ports to enhance your dining experience, don't forget to try the local firewater Medronho, and for the ladies, Melosa, served from a glass slipper! (You have to search for the slipper!)

The Serra da Monchique

Monchique is nestled in a valley between the only two mountains in the Algarve, Foia and Picota. The Romans who established Monchique , as mentioned above they built, with precision granite terraces all over the Serra de Monchique, you will see them everywhere. Villa Vida Nova nestles in 'Corga das Ervilhas' - Terraces of Peas! Corga is an ancient word not used these days and means 'Terraces'. Our terraces still produce, oranges, tangerines, lemons, plums, peaches, figs, sharon fruit, grapes, olives, cherries of which our guests are welcome to eat. We have also found, various stone hand tools, a bone needle, a bronze spur, a bronze buckle and slate buttons.

There are level walks, steep walks, walks to the top of Foia and walks to the cafes in town. Bird watching is very popular as we are on a major migratory route. Cork oak forests abound and offer welcome shade from the hot summer sun, and after all that exercise kick off your shoes and cool off in the infinity pool. Wind down with a glass of local wine or ice cold beer or test your culinary skills on the BBQ.

From the villa there are many attractions within a short drive. The peaks and contour roads of Foia and Picota afford 360 degree panoramic views, don't forget your camera! For the more adventurous, take some of the side roads and visit deserted watermills or the ghost village of Barbelote with its stunning cascade. The mountains here are quite spectacular and not to be missed ideal for the biker, hiker or just a casual stroll.

There are several golf courses, the nearest just 15 minutes drive away, and the new Autodromo do Algarve, F1 designed race track, features various motorsport events and track days and if you are up to it, a stunning go kart track open to the public. The busier tourist areas of the south coast and the town of Portimao with shopping malls, night life, sardine restaurants, sandy beaches and marina is just 25 minutes away. Take a boat trip from Portimao or Lagos to watch the dolphins in their natural habitat.

Refurbished to a very high standard this villa provides a perfect base for your holiday in the Algarve. The villa can comfortably sleep 12 people, with four generous bedrooms. There are two double bedrooms (one of which has a sofa bed / sleeper couch) and two twin rooms, the living room also has a comfortable sofa bed / sleeper couch. All bedrooms have fully fitted en-suite bathrooms. "Quinta do Tempo" - Turismo Rural welcomes you in Monchique. Monchique Thermal Baths are 2.5 km away, and the picturesque village of Monchique is 2 km away. Parking is free is available. There are 3 self-catering studios with flat-screen satellite TV and free Wi-Fi. They are equipped with a kitchenette, microwave, electric hob, toaster, fridge and filter coffee machine. The interior decor is simple, nice, oversized bed for a good rest.
The Quinta includes barbecue facilities, a garden and a sun terrace. With the possibility of seeing in the distance part of the Algarve coast, Portimão to Lagos, which are about 23km. Guests can get involved in various Nature Activities such as hiking in the Algarve, which, due to its altitude and location, gives it a unique micro climate, crystal clear water and excellent air quality.
In the region you can enjoy the generous regional cuisine and sweets, as well as the typical handicrafts. In this farm of subsistence agriculture, there are several species of fruit trees like the cherry tree, apple tree, plum tree, goddess among others, that in its time can prove. Quinta do Tempo has its stone houses, centenaries completely restored, maintaining the typical moth of the region and the original facades.

- "My husband and I stayed at this property for four nights in late July. The property is very nicely equipped with hotpot and a drip coffee machine! I was so happy to see one...not many on our travels. There is a small kitchenette...counter space is limited but it works. A nice table and chairs inside and one right outside with an umbrella. Bathroom and shower are great. Bed (twins together as requested) was very comfortable. There is a nice sitting area in the loft but my husband didn't even go up because the slanted ceiling was too low for him. But we really didn't need to because the outside area is so pleasant. We spent one afternoon just sitting on the lounge chairs reading and enjoying the peace and quiet. There is parking for a car or two with fairly easy access to the property. The drive to the coast was about 30 minutes and because we aren't "beach people" we just stopped to eat and check out a couple of the smaller towns and the seaside cliffs. We did go into Monchique (about a 5-10 minute drive) several times and ate out at a nice restaurant one evening. A grocery is easy to get to (and park) and we ate at the property several times. Both Laura and Jorge are extremely nice and helpful people. I had a slight medical issue and when I contacted Laura she helped me find a place in town that could help. They responded to all our needs and questions very easily. We highly recommend this property and will definitely stay here if we visit this area again in the future."

Level 275, where this villa is located, is high enough to have a view of the reliefs of the mountains to the beaches, from the windward side of Lagos, to Albufeira and, on the other hand, it is low enough to benefit from the slope upstream, protect us from North wind.
The view fills the soul, the morning aromas rival the song of blackbirds or goldfinches.
The space around the house is divided between green area and lawns and large bamboo deck areas, surrounding the pool with an infinity horizon and salt water. By leaving cars on the street or parked in the basement, pedestrian access to both the garden and any location inside the house or terraces is made easier for people with motor disabilities. There is a solar lift on all floors of the house and access ramps where necessary.
In the garden, by the pool or on any of the generous terraces, the invitation is to enjoy a fresh breakfast under the morning sun, a generous wine in the evening or even a supper under the starry sky.
