Grandfather Mountain, Chimney Rock and the Blue Ridge Parkway are a few of the more well known destinations, but there are plenty more to be discovered. Bring your bikes and ride on Sink Valley Road right in front of Waters Edge, or transport them to biking trails in the area, including one near the Mast General Store outside of Boone, North Carolina and the Virginia Creeper Trail out of Abbingdon, Virginia to the north. And if none of that interests you, just sit back on one of the four decks and take in the beautiful scenery of the lake and mountains. Or turn on your favorite music on the outside speakers.

The town used to be at what is now the bottom of Watauga Lake. Old structures, signs and roads are explored by avid scuba divers. In Boone, NC near Appalachian State University and in Blowing Rock, NC, there are plenty of shops with arts, pottery, clothing and collectibles. There are also quite a few excellent restaurants. For bigger city shoppers, Johnson City, TN is not far away. - "Of all the homes we've rented this was by far the best. The location, the house, was everything we hoped it would be. The house is beautiful, better than the pictures show! The beds are comfortable, except for the downstairs pull out. The kitchen is well stocked and even has room to store your food. Our family of seven all agree we'd like to come back. The Lake is fantastic...although you can get lost out there! We didn't see any bear but had deer come for a visit. The two 75 year old's managed the stairs pretty well."

- "Had a great time! Your home was so perfect! Kayaking and lake fun with the pups. Did a lot of exploring. Hot tub was great in the evenings. Over all great home!" - "Exactly what we were expecting, great house, great lake, great times with family." - "The property is wonderfully secluded, and beautifully remodeled and decorated. The owners have provided nearly everything you can think of for supplies and amenities. Kitchen supplies, including spices, etc. are abundant. Watercraft (canoe, 2 kayaks and a paddle boat), horseshoes, corn hole, board games and puzzles are all there. Even outdoor (blue) and indoor (white) towels are provided. The owners couldn't have been more thoughtful. The 123 steps to the water are something to take into consideration for people who are less able. It worked out perfectly for us, but you should be clear that the third bedroom has bunkbeds and that, to sleep 8, 2 would need to sleep on the pull out sofa. The place is idyllic, really. Though the owners have installed all of the modern conveniences, including multiple flat screen TVs with satellite, we never once turned on even one of them in the entire week. Even when it rained, there is enough covered deck that you can still be outside. Watauga Lake is amazing! Not much in the way of restaurants, stores and the like, but if you want to escape and immerse yourself in your family and you, this is a great place to do it."

- "Enjoyable." - "other than the owner needs bear proof trash cans(garbage from previous renter was attacked by bear the first night),we had a great time and would go back!!!!!!!!!" - "It was a true get-away place for a graduation weekend at Milligan University." - "Beautiful home with amazing views! The deck needs some attention, but you can see it is being worked on. That being said, the only negative I would say is that whoever is working is not cleaning up after themselves completely. It in no way takes away from the home or the view, unless you want to let it, but it is a little untidy outside. The home is cozy and welcoming. The communication with the host was wonderful! It seems more and more that I've had to ask for check in info the day of the stay for other VRBOs, but he sent the info a week ahead. I was really appreciative of that. The bed in the master upstairs is very firm, but that is a matter of preference. Overall we really enjoyed ourselves!"

NEVER BEEN TO WATAUGA LAKE?
Watauga Lake is an extremely beautiful and clean recreational lake (3rd cleanest in the country) located in the Cherokee National forest with 105 miles of shoreline. More than half of the lake is mountainous national forest and cannot be developed, so its really naturally beautiful and not crazy overpopulated with boats. This hidden gem is known to be one of the most beautiful lakes on the east coast. Watauga lake is great for boating, jet-skiing, tubing, skiing/wakeboarding, fishing, swimming, kayaking etc.
Downstream of the dam is a very popular whitewater rafting area as most of the local companies in TN and NC bring their patrons here. Hiking is also very popular as the Appalachian trail and a couple of small waterfalls are nearby. This property is also close to attractions in Boone, Banner Elk and Blowing Rock, NC and also attractions in eastern TN.
We have great sunny summers with no mosquitoes and beautiful fall colors when the leaves change. In the winter time, skiing is a popular option at nearby Sugar and Beech Mountain. This is a spectacular mountain and lake getaway.
Stair notice: Nestled in a scenic mountainous location, this charming vacation rental offers the perfect lakeside retreat. Please note that the property features approximately 15 steps leading to the front door, and additional steps down to the dock. As with most properties on the lake, the terrain offers a bit of a climb and descent, making it a great option for guests who appreciate nature and don't mind a little extra effort. Please consider these features when booking.
Rural Location Notice:
Our property is located in a very rural area. Cell service may be spotty. Local services such as maintenance, repairs, or emergency help can be limited and slower to respond. If an unexpected issue arises during your trip (such as power outages, weather impacts, or pest encounters, etc), we recommend checking out early if the issue affects your comfort. We do not offer refunds tor trip related interruptions, delays or inconveniences outside of our control. We strongly encourage guests to purchase travel insurance.
- "We had a great time at the house. Everything was clean and ready to go at time of check in. House was perfect for 2 adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs. Beds were comfy! We rented a pontoon boat for 3 days and the dock is perfect size to tie it up in. Dock is in a very quiet cove and the kids loved the lily pad and kayak. Enjoyed the fire pit as well and it was nice that I didn't have to go gather wood, just pushed the button and it was on. Fishing off the dock is good as well, lots of smaller blue gill and sunnies along with a very large 5lb large mouth bass. Would highly recommend this house for anyone looking for a nice cozy quiet place to relax. Owner was great to work with and answered all our questions very fast. Stairs could be a challenge for older folks but we had no problem going up and down them about 3-4 times per day."

We also had an issue with the hot tub which again she communicated with us and we were able to get it up and running to be use it our last day. - "Beautifully decorated, very comfortable condo. We had everything we needed. The view of the lake from the back deck was amazing! We enjoyed grilling and sitting on the deck. The walk to the lake was pretty steep and we weren’t really sure where we could access it without trespassing. We also had to cross the highway to get to the lake which was a little tricky with traffic. There are other units in the same building but we still felt like it was peaceful and secluded. We enjoyed a trip to a local winery and did some great hikes. Would definitely go again."
