About the SS James Comrie
The 73 ton James Comrie, built at Shoalhaven, NSW in 1877, was one of the first regular transport between Kangaroo Island and the mainland. Small and able, the wooden-hulled Comrie made regular shuttle trips with mail, other necessities and passengers to Penneshaw, Kingscote and the mainland and was celebrated by Islanders for climbing over waves “like an acrobat or a duck,” Comrie later became the tug boat Yulta.

The boat was named after the philanthropist James Comrie, who arrived in NSW on the 2nd June 1843 on the EMMA and initially worked at Moor’s Wharf at Millers Point, Sydney.

Being a very high price range I would just suggest to add a few things: the pillows were all really high and no other sizes stored so we actually all had really sore necks and not the most comfortable sleep. Not being serviced- a vacuum is a must! Only one towel was left per person which is fine but maybe in the email confirmation state what is offered and not and that just helps guests pack extra towels for the beach - but again price point wise I would hope beach towels or extra would be provided. The toilet has a really cheap exposed toilet brush which I just find unhygienic and off putting - it wouldn’t cost much to buy one in a cylinder. A few little things here and there would just make it a little more luxury for the price. But it’s new - it’s a great location and beautiful views from the lounge."

About the SS Karatta
The SS Karatta was one of the longest serving and best loved of all steamers that have operated between Kangaroo Island and them mainland.

She was the lifeblood of the Island for both passengers and cargo, with a capacity for 2600 bags of wheat and 900 shorn sheep. Built especially for the Kangaroo Island service, in Scotland in 1907, the Karatta was owned by the Adelaide Steamship Company and named after Karatta House, Robe, South Australia. She commenced the run in 1907 and ran for 54 years before being replaced by the MV Troubridge. Picture taken at Hog Bay.

The lifeboat from the SS Karatta is on display at the Maritime Museum Penneshaw.

About the YC Lily May
The Lily May was a small wooden sailing yawl cutter (YC) built by Henry Chant at Birkenhead, Port Adelaide circa 1870 that serviced the postal run between Kangaroo Island and the mainland between 1870 and 1880, by Harry Bates.

Harry Bates was a farmer and contractor carrying the mail across Backstairs Passage in the Lily May and operated Surbiton House as a boarding house, (located behind Cove Landing).

For that payment Harry was contracted to carry mail from the Talisker silver-lead mine, six miles from Cape Jervis to Cygnet River once a fortnight for £98. He walked six miles from Cape Jervis to Talisker and back again and then sailed the Lily May to Hog Bay where the mail was sorted. He then rode his horse Champion to Cygnet River to deliver the mail in waterproof saddle bags. The Lily May was named after Harry's daughter.

The tour desk is available to assist guests in planning their days out. This option features; six (6) separate bedrooms. With notice, two (2) bedrooms may set to two (2) long singles in each OR two King Beds in each. Four (4) bathrooms with shower, toilet and hairdryer. Three (3) lounge rooms and three (3) dining areas and three (3) Flat screen TV’s, one in each apartment. The space
You will find the kitchen well appointed with cooking appliances, including an electric pizza oven.

Our property is very child/baby friendly. We have included a high chair and portable cot along with a a kids corner with pre loved toys, games and books. For the safety of small children we have a gate which can be installed at the top of the stairwell.

The inclusions at the apartment will make your stay enjoyable and memorable.

While staying in our apartment why not indulge in a glass of your favourite Kangaroo Island wine selected from one of our local wineries or enjoy some of the local produce that Kangaroo Island. These include island pure cheeses, honey, fresh water crayfish, marron, oysters, fresh fish and southrock lamb.

The KI Visitor Information centre is directly across the road from the apartment and you will find the staff very helpful and they will assist with information regarding the abundant wildlife including resident fairy penguins and wallabies. We recommend you keep an eye out for marine life including dolphins, seals and whales in the winter months. There have been occasions where whales have been sighted in Christmas Cove and you might be one of the lucky ones.

You are free to use any appliances within the apartment. The full size fridge will allow you plenty of room to store all of the local produce you purchase to enjoy.

The laundry is equipped with a front loading washing machine and a dryer for your convenience.

About the SS James Comrie
The 73 ton James Comrie, built at Shoalhaven, NSW in 1877, was one of the first regular transport between Kangaroo Island and the mainland. Small and able, the wooden-hulled Comrie made regular shuttle trips with mail, other necessities and passengers to Penneshaw, Kingscote and the mainland and was celebrated by Islanders for climbing over waves “like an acrobat or a duck,” Comrie later became the tug boat Yulta.

The boat was named after the philanthropist James Comrie, who arrived in NSW on the 2nd June 1843 on the EMMA and initially worked at Moor’s Wharf at Millers Point, Sydney.

Overlooking Backstairs passage and Christmas Cove, this amazing apartment is perfect for a luxury Island getaway; or for a longer home away from home stay.

The apartment is home to Australia’s first settlement with beach front address. About the YC Lily May
The Lily May was a small wooden sailing yawl cutter (YC) built by Henry Chant at Birkenhead, Port Adelaide circa 1870 that serviced the postal run between Kangaroo Island and the mainland between 1870 and 1880, by Harry Bates.

Harry Bates was a farmer and contractor carrying the mail across Backstairs Passage in the Lily May and operated Surbiton House as a boarding house, (located behind Cove Landing).

For that payment Harry was contracted to carry mail from the Talisker silver-lead mine, six miles from Cape Jervis to Cygnet River once a fortnight for £98. He walked six miles from Cape Jervis to Talisker and back again and then sailed the Lily May to Hog Bay where the mail was sorted. He then rode his horse Champion to Cygnet River to deliver the mail in waterproof saddle bags. The Lily May was named after Harry's daughter.

About the SS Karatta
The SS Karatta was one of the longest serving and best loved of all steamers that have operated between Kangaroo Island and the mainland.

She was the lifeblood of the Island for both passengers and cargo, with a capacity for 2600 bags of wheat and 900 shorn sheep. Built especially for the Kangaroo Island service, in Scotland in 1907, the Karatta was owned by the Adelaide Steamship Company and named after Karatta House, Robe, South Australia. She commenced the run in 1907 and ran for 54 years before being replaced by the MV Troubridge. Picture taken at Hog Bay.

The lifeboat from the SS Karatta is on display at the Maritime Museum Penneshaw.
