In the adjacent lane kangaroos may be seen grazing each morning and also may be seen living in the bushes of the extinct volcanic plug on the property. For the energetic; guests may climb the extinct volcano and stimulate a good appetite for their hearty Poppy's Cottage breakfast.
You can then settle back under the fruit trees in an enchanting garden and enjoy the delicious meal served to you at your leisure. Spend the day relaxing in the shaded 2 acres of gardens or explore the town in the daily bus tour to hear the highlights of life in Armidale from its beginnings to the current time. There is information in the cottage for a self drive tour by car or a walk around the town to see some of the lovely old buildings and their attractive architecture. Set amongst gorgeous 100 year old gardens, our freestanding little cottage is the perfect place to escape to the country for some rest and recuperation. Easy to access off a main road and only 7 km from the town of Walcha you can come and go as you please or just settle right in and cosy up in front of the wood fire with a home cooked meal prepared in your fully furnished kitchen. Completely private and ultimate comfort, you won't want to leave!

The space
The cottage is known to our family as the "Old Rooms", approx. 10 m from our historic homestead, once serving as the homestead laundry where a wood fire burned to boil the clothes in a copper.

The Old Rooms remained unused following the introduction of the modern electric washing machine in the 1950's, until recently when we decided to restore the quaint building and convert the space into a little cottage.

Refreshments such as tea, coffee and milk are supplied, along with home made biscuits.

Other things to note
Currently we are unable to offer guests free Wifi access.

Walcha is a small country town and does not have the variety or extensive availability for evening and take away meals you would typically find in larger towns or the city. However The Taphouse is worth a visit from Wednesday to Saturday 2-10pm.Great simple meals and beverages.


Because of this minor restriction, the Cottage kitchen has been furnished with all the utensils and equipment needed to prepare meals, no matter how big, small or complex, including gas stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge and freezer.

Walcha has two very well stocked supermarkets, open until 7 pm (weekdays, 4 pm on weekends) where you'll find pretty much everything you need to prepare your own meals or just put together a cheeseboard to enjoy with a couple of drinks.
