A Warm and Cozy 50' Houseboat in gated, quaint and peaceful marina near the city
Boat Rental
Richmond, Virginia, USA

Note: IF THE GIAMARIA IS NOT AVAILABLE, please check out my other boat the COOKIE B.
Available this spring. The ELIZABETH CLEMENTINE

Dear future guests,. I will admit there is no completely safe place to spend your time, but if you must get away please do it where the air flows free up and down a river or across farmer's fields or through a nearby forest if possible; areas similar to the one where all three of my boats are berthed.

We are blessed to be in a very unique country setting near the beautifully renovated Lily Pad Cafe; the only true outdoor riverside eatery in the Richmond area.

Here you will find what I believe is a safe place to hike, bike or run on nearby county roads in National Parks, or on the VIRGINIA CAPITOL TRAIL. Or you could just choose to read, paint, write, fish, sun, or work "from home" by using our internet service You will also find a great deal of personal space and solitude which will become immediately apparent as you drive down either of our three first highways in the entire United States of America: Osborne Turnpike, old route #5, or Kingsland Road before you get to experience America's first river; the James.
The GiaMaria and the Cookie B are berthed in very calm waters and are Indeed, awesome places to spend your time. They are in fact, places like no other in the entire United States, and I will make an honest attempt to back up this statement in the description that follows given the few words that are allowed.

As for the GiaMaria, she is a 50' Chris Craft houseboat that has been completely remodeled inside and out in order to give our guests a home-like atmosphere without losing the feel of being on an old riverboat. It is modern in every sense of the word. It has been reconstructed to have a large bathroom with a full sized vanity, a 4' designer shower, ventilator fans, and its own USCG certified sanitation system. It comes complete with a queen eleven inch memory foam mattress (Sleep Innovations) and high quality bedding, a small but complete galley and a large colorful salon with carpeted floors a 46" TV, and a fireplace to keep you warm and cozy. Outside you will find a large open upper deck with great views for morning coffee or evening drinks and a lower covered bow deck.

The Cookie B is equally as nice, however character limitations in this space do not allow such an elaborate description if I am to describe this unique area where these vessels are docked. But you can find the Cookie B's unique listing here on Homeaway as well.

But it is not just the GiaMaria or the Cookie B that you will enjoy. It is also there unique location. The Richmond Yacht Basin is less than 10 country road miles from downtown Richmond. And their setting cannot be duplicated. It is adjacent to the Richmond National Battlefield Park and well kept privately owned farms. Just one mile away is Osborne Landing, a county owned facility which has a nice fishing pier, a Bass Master's boat launch, a nice walking trail along the river's edge, a canoe and kayak launch ramp, pavilions for picnics/cookouts, bathrooms and a wonderful playground for kids. It is always kept in tip-top shape, and it is all free to the public.

After a beautiful canopied drive which will take you to the marina, you will find yourself standing on the ground where so many famous people lived and events took place that shaped our nation's history. Some of the historical people who lived in the nearby Indian settlement of Arrohateck included Chief Powhatan's son, Tanx or (Parahunt) and Pocahontas his daughter, who married her English born husband John Rolfe. Pocahontas and John Rolfe after marriage made their home on this property, and with the help of indentured servants and later African slaves, they helped to save Jamestown by producing tobacco from the "Varina" seed. It was the only "gold" that those early colonists would find, yet it would have tremendous economic value in many European countries and save the colony from being abandoned..

We are also located where Captain John Smith found his "sweetest water" during his early explorations, while others like, George Washington, Patrick Henry, Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee and his mother, Anne Hill Carter, John Marshall, 4th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Susannah Bowling, Layfayette, Benedict Arnold, Gen. Cornwallis and thousand of bound African slaves passed thru this oxbow in the James River on their way to build and transform our nation. Battles on land and in the river were fought here too, during both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. During the Revolutionary War, Benedict Arnold sank our Colonial Fleet within eyesight of the GiaMaria and the Cookie B before burning Richmond. Union Ironclads like the Monitor and Galena fought other Ironclads like the Confederate's CSS Virginia while trying to pass Drewery's Bluff, the confederate's "Annapolis" while trying to subdue Richmond.

And Just around the river's bend east of Richmond Yacht Basin is Henricus, the London Company's second settlement after Jamestown in the New World. Unfortunately the original "cittie" was destroyed by Opechancanough, Chief Powhatan's successor "brother" during the Indian Massacre of 1622.
Today however, Henricus is a thriving reconstruction of what it was like in the days of Sir Thomas Dale's early 1600's "town", and many of my guests who have visited there say it is on par with Jamestown.

Just down the road heading east along Route 5 (a Virginia Bi-Way) are plantations like Shirley, still owned and operated by the same family since its beginning in the 1600's and Berkley, where Taps was first composed and played, and also where the first Thanksgiving was arguably held. There is also Westover, the home of President William Henry Harrison (Ole' Tippecanoe), Sherwood Forrest, the home of "His Accidency", President John Tyler, and Evergreen, the birthplace of Edmund Ruffin, who is the father of modern agriculture and the southern firebrand who is credited with firing the shot that started the Civil War. These are just a few of the historical places or attractions to be found within a few minutes of the docking space of the GiaMaria or the Cookie B. Then going west on Route 5 into Richmond you will find St. John's Episcopal Church where Patrick Henry told the King of England, to go to hell, or Hollywood Cemetery where a great many historical figures are buried like the Presidents Monroe and Tyler. Within minutes if you are a Civil War buff, then you are in luck because you will be set squarely in the middle of where the Battle of the Crater took place, as did Cold Harbor, Malvern Hill, White Oak Swamp, Deep Bottom, Chaffin's Farm, Pamplin Historical Park and City Point (Gen. Grants headquarters during the siege of Petersburg) and many other well known and not so well known battle sites and fortifications.

Much about our old and dusty beginnings causes us to be proud, but at the same time ashamed. However, because of the lessons learned from our past, the Richmond area today has become a bright and shiny place which is set like Rome on seven hills.
Here you will find many and varied museums or river rapids for those brave enough to take the plunge, sports events of every kind, major universities and hospitals like Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia, world class car races at Richmond International Raceway and cycling (the UCI world championship 2015), as well as the Richmond Marathon (rated the 18th largest in the nation). There are also restaurants galore from local favorites to world class dining. Richmond is fast becoming a gourmets delight and the Craft Brewery Capital of the South. Chic shopping districts like Carytown, River Road, Short Pump or Stoney Point are all within a short distance, as are outlet malls and several large shopping centers.
Watersports and tours of many kinds are offered in several nearby places. Major garden tours (voted one of the best in the country) like Lewis-Ginter Botanical Gardens or Maymont Park as well as national, state and local parks are all within minutes of the GiaMaria. And in one to two hours by car you can be in the Blue Ridge Mountains or Charlottesville or Virginia Beach or Washington, DC, or Williamsburg or Jamestown, or Yorktown, or Petersburg, or Kings Dominion, or Busch Gardens, and several major outlet malls.

We even now enjoy the Virginia Capital Trail. It is a cycling/walking, running hard surfaced path of 52 miles that links Richmond, the Capital of Virginia, and the Colonial Capitals of Williamsburg and Jamestown. And all of this is only a sampling of what you will find within a stones throw of either vessel.

The area though is also a wildlife lover's delight. There are many native species of plants and animals such as rare Lady Slippers, Bald Eagles, ancient swamps of Cypress and Junipers, Running Cedar, and Song Birds galore. There are Foxes, both red and silver, and occasional bobcats, beavers and otters. We are also a flyway for many species of creatures, such as Butterflies, Purple Martins, Ducks, Geese, Humming Birds, Robins, Northern Bald Eagles. Fish such as Striped Bass, American and Hickory Shad and American Eels spawn here in the spring. And in the fall, ancient Sturgeons weighing more than 500 pounds can be seen jumping out of the water.
As for fishing, we have both Large and Small Mouth Bass, several species of Catfish, record sized Crappie and several local guides will guarantee that you will catch a catfish of 40 pounds or more during late fall and throughout the winter.

But if dancing is your thing, then the Tobacco Company is just down the road where you can party late into the night.

- "My family and I had the most amazing stay here for two weeks!! From the very start, we were treated like family and wish I could leave a 10 Star Review because it is absolutely 100% well deserved! The owners Janet & Rob are the most wonderful and gracious hosts. This property is a slice of heaven, the location is ideal with direct access to the river, it is so peaceful and tranquil with amazing views of the James River right from your living room window, kitchen window and sun room. The private dock is a fisherman's dream-my husband and kids were in heaven catching blue catfish, crabs and a variety of other fish. The hosts provided us with plenty of kayak's, life jackets, fishing poles, and went out of their way to deliver us exceptional hospitality. We will be coming back to stay during our son's college breaks and can't wait to stay again in this amazing cottage on the river. Also, we love coffee and appreciated the Keurig coffee maker as well as the overall cleanliness-it was top notch all the way around. Thank you so much Janet & Rob for everything! : )"

A Cozy And Classic Hatteras 43' Yacht In One Of The Best James River Locations
Boat Rental
Richmond, Virginia, USA

Note: If chosen nights not available check out my other very similar boat the GiaMaria.

The "Cookie B" is a 43' Hatteras yacht sporting a 12' x16' main salon with designer carpets, a sound system, a 40" TV, an antique Coca Cola table and chair set and a new sleeper sofa, installed july 2024. Her galley/kitchen is outfitted with a state of the art induction cook-top, cookware and red retro appliances, including a 3/4 sized fridge, coffee pot and toaster,. The master stateroom sports 10" memory foamed mattresses and pillows that have been topped with quality linens and coverlets. The re-decorated master bathroom has been equipped with a silent flush Jabsco electric toilet, light fixtures, floor coverings and paint. Outside, the "Cookie B" has a covered stern deck that is just the ticket for morning coffee or evening drinks. There is a large bow deck for enjoying a sunny day or starry evenings, and there is not a more beautiful view of the James to be had whether looking east or west. It can be beyond peaceful on nights when hoot owls call to one another from across the narrow channel on Hatcher's island. And because we are moored in a shallow oxbow of the original James River (the part where Chief Powhatan, Pocahontas, Captain John Smith, President Lincoln, the Marquis de Lafayette, Benedict Arnold, and so many other notables passed within a few feet of your bow, it is easy to visualize those folks, those times, and those events that have shaped our country right here where you will be sitting. But there is another bonus to where the "Cookie B" is docked, and that is, there is never any commercial traffic, or rough water because we are protected on all four sides from heavy winds and storms.
To get here is also a treat because you will enter the property by way of Hoke Brady, a National Park Service road, then continue on through a coded gate and travel for a short time past some beautiful farmland. Then as you descend the hill to the marina, you will pass a sign that says 4 1/2 MPH where you will get your first long glimpse of the beautiful James River. But be careful in the park because wildlife is everywhere, and so might be a park police radar. There is so much here to explore and enjoy in our little "piece of heaven" that it is difficult to know what to describe. Our ice is free as is our lighted parking lot which is videoed 24/7 and in view of the "Cookie B". So come and enjoy, you will not be disappointed.

A VERY NICE 43' YACHT WITH LONG RIVER VIEWS AND ONSITE RIVERSIDE DINING
Boat Rental
Richmond, Virginia, USA

The Jewel in so many ways, has it all: For openers, you will have 2 parking spaces, and they are directly behind the Jewel! Pulling a trailer? We will find a space for it as well.
As for boarding, it is relatively easy no matter our ages. (See picture)
Then once you are inside, you will enjoy either central AC or heat, a private bedroom and bath with a shower/tub, a second very large v-berth bed and a small second bath with shower, a well equipped galley with fridge, separate ice maker, microwave/convection oven, cook top, filter style coffee maker (coffee aboard), toaster, double stainless steel sink, ample counter space, cabinets and everything needed to cook and serve your favorite dishes. And when the day is done, you will find a 32" smart TV and internet, a comfortable leatherette sofa and two very nice stuffed recliners just waiting for y'all to enjoy in the Jewel's spacious living room.
Outside? You can enjoy a covered stern deck to just laze, or to watch the show of life along the river. And at the end of the you might might wittness some absolutely stunning sunsets.

NOTE: This section of the marina has several liveaboard families. Therefore, loud music or excessive partying will not be tolerated!

To continue: If history is your thing, then you will appreciate that no one spot in the U.S. can offer more of our history than the five miles surrounding this area. It was all here, from prehistoric Indian villages (Pocahontas lived here with her husband John Rolfe), and the 2nd English settlement (Henricus, 1611, which was named for King James' youngest son), or the earliest plantations or Civil War and Revolutionary War skirmishes and full scale battles.
Sports of every kind are close by too, including the new Virginia Capitol Trail for cyclists, hikers and meanderers. And it might sound like bragging, but there is no place in the entire area that can surpass the fresh air surrounding this vessel! That is because the river runs south thru southwest just off the Jewel's stern. Yet off her bow open farm land runs from the south thru southeast and back to the north to complete the circle.
This boat and the surrounding areas are a great find for those who want to enjoy a quaint, private, and safe location, whether it is for a one night stay or a longer staycation.

Guest Reviews:

- "Captain Ron and the "Kayla Leigh" were both terrific. Ron is both an abundance of information as well as an equal amount of life stories well worth hearing about (and you can read much more about in his published book that welcomes you inside the Kayla Leigh). The boat itself comes with all the creature comforts of a very unique "home." A very comfortable living/TV room. Strong internet connection. A well stocked galley. Two bedrooms whose beds give plenty of room to stretch out on. Two bathrooms. Even a very warm electric fireplace that we took full advantage of when the evening and early morning temps happened to plunge during our visit. There's also a comfortable deck to sit and watch and enjoy the river from .There's also a terrific bar/cafe within a simple stroll from the boat that had a couple of terrific musicians playing the night we enjoyed out stay and plenty of food/drink to consider ordering. We would definitely stay again if our travel plans have us staying in the Richmond, VA area."

Guest Reviews:

- "The property was great It was just as the pictures portrayed we definitely enjoyed our stay " - "We were visiting from Houston, seeing relatives in Chesterfield County so the house was conveniently located. My husband grew up in Meadowbrook and played golf at Meadowbrook Country Club. So this house, which backs up to the eleventh fairway, brought back lots of memories for him. The yard is lovely, front and back. Very nice to sit outside on the deck when the weather was warm enough. It’s mostly in shade this time of year, the leaves were starting to turn and the sun was shining. Bucolic! The house itself was more than adequate for the two of us, very clean, nicely appointed, comfortable. The only improvement I might recommend is to add a mattress topper to the master bedroom bed. The foam mattress was just a little too firm. But otherwise it was a delightful stay. Thank you!"

I’d definitely stay again." - "My family and I stayed June 2024. When we walked in it smelled clean and fresh. Richmond was very hot that weekend, the ac worked very well. Kitchen was well stocked. Easy access to washer/dryer. Stayed with my handicapped mother, so having a 1st floor bathroom was great. The beds were comfortable. Plenty of towels and wash rags. Neighborhood was quiet, never heard any neighbors or outside noise. Enjoyed taking my morning coffee on the enclosed back patio. Would definitely re-book this property."

!!! Property Access & Travel Notes !!!

***Getting to our home: ***
The house is located at the end of a historic mid-century gravel road, originally used before the surrounding subdivisions were built and preserved today to offer maximum privacy and seclusion. You will cross a small private bridge that connects the neighborhood to this quiet road. Take it slow and you will find our home.

At the end of the neighborhood, as you continue onto the wooded road, please drive slowly and carefully cross the small concrete bridge onto the gravel roadway. The home is tucked away in a secluded, rural area — perfect for privacy, but it requires a bit of extra caution.

Please note:
The backroads can be narrow and uneven in places, especially after rain.
There may be low-hanging branches and occasional muddy patches — especially during heavy downpours when the nearby creek can rise.
Motorcycles and low-clearance vehicles are not recommended for this drive.
Oversized vehicles may find it difficult to navigate the small concrete bridge that crosses the creek.

In inclement weather, all-wheel or four-wheel drive is highly recommended.
We encourage you to review the photos of the roadway in the listing and plan your travel accordingly. If you have any questions about accessibility or need further guidance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

***Those LOOKING FOR ADDITIONAL, NEARBY SPACE FOR LARGE GROUPS, please ask us about our "Modern Comforts, Classic Charm: Neighborhood Gem" located a convenient distance across from the property! Sleeps 8, dog friendly!***

The entirety of the home is accessible to guests with the exception of a hospitality closet located in the hallway next to the kitchen and in the basement to the right of the bathroom. There is one other guest house located on the property; the only shared space between these two properties is the brick patio with the picnic table and hammocks.

There's also a singular parking space parallel to the sidewalk leading to the front door. Parking is available for up to five vehicles, depending on their size.

It is of significance to acknowledge that your current location situates you within a rural environment. Consequently, it is anticipated that the prevalence of insects will surpass what you may typically encounter. Furthermore, there exists the potential for encounters with bears, raccoons, venomous as well as non-venomous snakes, and various other forms of wildlife that might deviate from your accustomed encounters.

-----A NOTE ON PROPERTY ACCESSABILITY:

To access the property, there are approximately 3–5 steps at the front entryway. Once inside, you'll be on the second floor, where you'll find the main living room, dining room, kitchen, three bedrooms, and two full bathrooms.

Alternatively, the basement can be accessed either from the upstairs level or through the garage. If entering through the garage, there are no stairs to navigate. Guests can park directly outside the garage, and someone inside the home can unlock the door by entering through the front door, going downstairs to the garage level, and opening it from the inside.

The basement features one bedroom, one full bathroom, and a second living area.
Please note that there is a full flight of stairs between the basement and the upstairs level, both when ascending and descending.

Ample free parking is available in the driveway in front of the garage, and the garage itself can accommodate up to two vehicles. Additionally, there is a single parallel parking space located along the sidewalk leading to the front door.

From the garage parking area, it’s approximately 125 feet to the front door. From the parallel parking space along the sidewalk, the distance is roughly 65 feet.

- "Great Hosts" - "My teenage son and I stayed here for a 4 day swim meet at SwimRva which was conveniently about 5 minutes away. The basement apartment was very clean and extremely well put put together!. The apartment was comfortable and my son certainly enjoyed the video games on the giant tv! Sharon was extremely communicative and even left out snacks for us every morning! I would highly recommend this property!" - "Not sure how this property was listed on VRBO. It was a shared space. The owners lived upstairs and were present the whole time we were there. The rental space was a basement they have somewhat converted into an apartment. However , there was no lock on the door to the basement so no way to prevent anyone from walking down the stairs at any point. Also, there is no private entrance to the basement. To enter, we walked in through the front door where we saw the homeowners in their kitchen. There was an entrance through a back patio but no walkway to access that entrance from the front of the house. It says in the listing there are multiple beds but there really is only one bed and a large couch that doesn’t pull out. There are some air mattresses in the closet but that was not mentioned in the listing. We were in Richmond for the Richmond marathon and had a last minute cancellation so had to book this the day before. It was definitely not as advertised but we didn’t have any choice since it was last minute and no other rentals were available. (The Richmond Marathon is large and all rentals were booked). "

***Those LOOKING FOR ADDITIONAL, NEARBY SPACE FOR LARGE GROUPS, please ask us about our "Serenity in the Suburbs: Your Gorgeous RVA Getaway" located a convenient distance across from the property! Sleeps 10, dog friendly!***

The entirety of the home is accessible to guests with the exception of a hospitality closet located on the upper floor off of the living room and a utility closet downstairs in the foyer. There is one other house located on the property; the only shared space between these two properties is the brick patio with the picnic table and hammocks.

This special place is close to everything, making it easy to plan your visit. This is my personal room. I’m renting out while I’m working remotely. My family lives in the house so it has a cozy feeling.

Guest Reviews:

- "The home was absolutely beautiful. The bed was comfy. The only extra we needed that was not in our room were washcloths. But that was promptly taken care of. We never saw or found any rules but just treated it as our own. I wish there had been a bit more lighting in the bedroom. I would absolutely stay here again if I was going to be in the area. We were the last to leave the house that day and had no direction on locking the house and had an issue with that as well. But as I said we would for sure keep this in mind for another stay. There was a mini fridge and microwave in the room as well as a coffee machine for those who like coffee and mini pancakes in the freezer."

Guest Reviews:

- "Me and my partner stayed for a weekend so none of the problems were too bad. The stove would not turn on or work, but they provided an airfryer to heat up our food. There was only one roll of oneply toilet paper which sufficed for us, but I worry other families may not be as lucky. I am pretty sure this might have been an oversight, but there was no indoor trash can or bags, which made it hard to keep the space clean. There were also coffee pods, which we appreciated, but no coffee machine. Maybe it will be put in later, or maybe it was unavailable at the time. We made due though. The space is well maintened and clean with only some outside bugs sneaking their way in from the yard. Parking was amazingly convenient and the host was very responsive through the app. Overall an okay experiece."

Artsy Home, 15 min to City
House
James River

Find safe passage through RVA, or a rural retreat, in this comfortable and artsy home. This is a family home that we Airbnb, not a house converted into an Airbnb. If you have allergies to pets this is not the stay for you.

The backyard is large and spacious with lots of plant life.

We are 11 minutes from the airport, 7 minutes from the Lilly Pad Cafe, 8 Minutes to paddle boat entries.

The space
The kitchen is equipped with most common appliances and utensils

This home nestled in the country of Virginia’s woods 10 minutes from the James River, the city’s edge, and surrounded by farmland.

The house water is supplied by well water. The well water runs through a three part system filter. However, well water can have an odor to it. This due to where it is sourced and not something we can fix. It’s typically a sulphirish smell and is safe to drink, use, and bathe with.

The bathroom has a tub, shower, and toilet.

The backyard is large and spacious with lots of plant life. There’s a gas fire pit and trampoline.

This is my home. I don’t charge a cleaning fee because I expect guests to be respectful. If you are actively sick or have allergies to dogs/cats this isn’t the spot for you.

Guest access
You will receive check in instructions through this App and we will provide further guidance on the date of your check in.

Other things to note
There is one exterior security camera in our front porch light, monitoring the front door.

Avoid potential issues by making sure your pets flea medication is current during warmer months. There are lots of trees and squirrels here, so fleas are common.

Our well water is triple filtered and occasionally has a sulfur smell.

A land steward often comes to care for the wooded area past the back yard lawn.

This is my home! Not a place we made up to be an Airbnb exclusively. I hope you enjoy all the little homey touches, personal pictures, and astrology books. I live here part time throughout the year and hope that you will respect my home by keeping it tidy and caring for the things in the space. When I'm not living here, I'll be camping! Often times I'll be camping in the back yard and tending the soon to be chickens and bees.

Warm, Cozy and Comfortable Houseboat, Gated Marina
Boat Rental
James River

Note: Dates taken? I have one other boat online-- The Cookie B with beautiful river views.

We offer no contact boarding if desired and we understand the need for a clean place to stay. Therefore we go beyond the recommended guidelines concerning sanitation by fogging the entire boat after each guests departure. And for dining, you can cook aboard or enjoy the Lily Pad Cafe, an outdoor covered and heated restaurant on the river, and it is only two miles from the marina.

The space
I will be the first to admit that in my 80 years the current pandemic is the worst that I have ever experienced. But if you are not someone who must or needs to get out, then come to the GiaMaria or my other boat the Cookie B in this beautiful country setting where you can watch birds, fish, hike, bike, read , play board games, and even work "from Home" or just hang out on the spacious outside decks. It is a great way for anyone to just keep on living in his/her own personal space where you will not need to come into contact with anyone unless you so desire! The 50' Chris Craft, GiaMaria, is a hybrid idea turned reality that came into my mind as I was exploring a way to provide an adventure for guests at a reasonable price, even for those who would be staying aboard only for one night. And so, I built the boat so that looking at the stars and hearing a Hoot Owl from the upper deck, would in my opinion beat hands down watching another dumbed down TV program. Also, my plan was for the GiaMaria to offer a total living space, where you can cook a full gourmet meal and dance in the main saloon. She is not just a place to stay where you don't know who is in the next room to you, but a safe and quiet place where you can relax, stay warm or cool depending on the seasons and still get away from that "beaten path."

For all practicable purposes, you will be experiencing living in a "tiny house" but it won't feel like it because the GiaMaria is really quite roomy. So, if you have ever wondered what living in less space, or what living in a houseboat would be like, then this is for you. Because you get not only a great place to enjoy your stay, but you get to experience both life styles. This vessel is a great addition to the greater Richmond area too because of her unique location, and also her close proximity to the cities of Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial heights.

And something else that is unique has to do with me, your host. And that is, I am the longest surviving USCG licensed James River tugboat captain, and in my retirement years in addition to building and offering the GiaMaria, I became an amateur historian, writer, and a lover of the hundreds of species of wildlife in our area. Even where the GiaMaria is berthed it is unique, because she is moored alongside a private dock, and in a remote oxbow of the James River where commercial vessels don't rock and roll us, or scare our game, or destroy our beautiful shorelines. In truth, we are remote without being remote because we are only nine miles from the Capital of Virginia. Yet the only approach to the Richmond Yacht Basin other than by water is through the beautiful, scenic, and well kept Richmond National Battlefield Park.
It is an area where many species of wildlife live and can appear at any time or place along the roadway, so please be careful when driving. The road which is about a mile long has a speed limit of 25 MPH and follows earthworks that were hand dug by Union soldiers during the Civil War .
At the end of the road and straight ahead, a walking path will lead you to Fort Brady (named for Matthew Brady the celebrated Civil War Photographer and Union General Hoke) which overlooks the James River. It is a magical spot well worth every minute you will spend there.
And only a few yards away and to your right is a coded gate that secures a couple of beautiful farms and the marina entrance.
As you descend the hill, the sign reads 41/2 miles per hour. It is not just to control speed or to be whimsical but because we want you to take a moment and enjoy the beautiful view and the historic space that you are entering as you approach the marina.

The GiaMaria seems to always surprise every guest that has stayed aboard because of how open, roomy and comfortable she is. As her owner and someone who has spent a lifetime on boats, I very well know how charming but uncomfortable some boats can be no matter their size. And so, my number one goal as I set out to redesign and rebuild this vessel was to make it as comfortable as your home, but also highly functional. And if what my guests have had to say about it is true, then this goal has been accomplished. My plan was not to just build in easy living, but also to locate the GiaMaria in a safe, seclude and picturesque marina. I therefore chose Richmond Yacht Basin. It is a place where my guests will have an opportunity to fish, play, or just relax while aboard in one of the most beautiful settings to be found in Eastern Virginia. It is not the kind of marina where all boats are necessarily stacked one beside the other, or where deck shoes are required, but a place with lots of local color because of the people who inhabit it. There is an old-time working boatyard, and just across the river on Hatcher Island there is a wilderness.
Richmond Yacht Basin is a place that I have personally come to cherish, because it is a small, quiet and cozy family owned Jewel only 15 minutes from downtown Richmond by way of (Osborne Turnpike) an old country road. The road itself you will find to be quite unique as you will travel under ancient cedar trees. And as you reach Tree Hill just before entering Richmond, you will experience a beautiful view of the downtown, yet you will still be in the midst of a well kept farm.
The marina however is within walking/jogging/cycling distance from the Richmond National Battlefield Park, a magnificent family park at Osborne Landing with a Bass Master's Classic landing for launching boats and a separate kayak/canoe launch dock. There is also a wonderful newly constructed playground for children, complete with toilet facilities. Within a few miles there is also Dory Park where you can fish for trout, watch a ball game or ride or stroll some beautiful trails. And best of all, it is all free.
We are also adjacent to one of the busiest and most scenic bike trails anywhere in Virginia; The Virginia Capital Trail which runs from Richmond to Williamsburg, and on any given weekend hundreds of cyclists peddle through the park near the marina or on the trail as individuals, couples or on club outings.
The historic James River will be your "front yard" where sea going tugs and ships travel sometimes on a daily basis, but of course not through "our front yard". The GiaMaria rests in only four feet of water at dockside, and it is protected from storms by a wild and beautiful island on the opposite shore.
And if you like history, there is no spot in the entire United States that can offer so much in such a small space. You will be onsite where Powhatan and his daughter Pocahontas spent much of their lives at Arrohateck, as did her husband John Rolfe and it was here where John Rolfe would plant his famous Varina tobacco that would save the colonies. Just around the river's bend you can experience Henricus Park (named for Prince Henry, the eldest son of King James I) and the second English Virginia settlement in America. Henricus is a re-created historical adventure park that is well worth visiting and it is similar in many ways to the Jamestown Historical Park.
Our area is also the place where Benedict Arnold sank our Colonial fleet as it rested on anchor almost within sight of our marina once our patriots had declared war on England in order to gain our independence. And just up the road in Church Hill, Patrick Henry gave his famous "give me liberty or give me death" speech.
Civil War battles were fought here on Chafin's farm while Union Ironclads like the Monitor and Galena fought unsuccessfully while trying to pass Drewery's Bluff (the confederate naval academy) and hoping to subdue the confederate General Robert E. Lee. And as a personal connection, my great grandfather,John Brown, a confederate solider was released at Akien's wharf just around the bend after spending his imprisionment at Point Lookout, Maryland.
Think names like Captain John Smith( Jamestown), Patrick Henry( "Give me liberty or give me death") and US Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, John Tyler and William Henry Harrison. Peter Jefferson(Thomas' father) lived here before moving to Monticello in the Albermarle as did the 4th Chief Justice of the United States, John Marshall. Generals during the Revolutionary War, like Washington (American), LaFayette (French), Arnold and Cornwallis (English), and Kosciuszko (Polish), Washington's "accomplished military architect" as well as Civil War Generals like Grant and Lee were also here. All of these giants spent considerable time here or lived here as did many other well known personalities throughout our history.
In modern times people like the Honorable Governor of Virginia, L. Douglas Wilder, grew up and lived just down the road in Churchill and became the first black governor of Virginia and in the United States. And the late and much loved singer Jimmy Dean chose his wife, his yacht, (The Big Bad John), and this area as his playground and also to make it his home.
Fortunately for us today, Jimmy Dean's beautiful widow and well known singer, Donna Meade Dean Stevens has been very successful in her own right while reviving The Old Dominion Barn Dance, a Virginia Treasure that was broadcast in the 40's and 50's throughout much of the country and even worldwide to our servicemen and women who were serving overseas during those years.
But the area is not all about famous people and events. Wildlife abounds here. Bald Eagles nest just across the channel as do Great Blue Herons, Little Green Herons and Ospreys among many other birds and land creatures.
And Osborne Landing which is only a mile away has become a sports person's paradise. Whether it is fishing, hunting, skiing, paddle boarding, canoeing, canoe sailing, small boat sailing, kayaking, playing on personal watercraft, hiking the beautiful and well planned paths that will take you down by the riverside, checking out the battlefields, hunting for relics or what ever suits your fancy, you will find it here. In fact, there is only one word to describe the docking spot that the GiaMaria enjoys, and that word is UNIQUE.
One more thing. I understand that anything is possible, but our area is UNIQUE in another way too. We have not suffered from many serious storms, earthquakes, fires, droughts or blizzards as do other parts of the US. We experience the four seasons, and it would be very unusual for any one season to have severe weather that would last more than a few days at a time. We truly are blessed to live in such a beautiful historic countryside that is laced with meandering back roads that cut through ancient forest or small well kept farms and villages. So..., what are you waiting for? Come and take the weight off and absorb the excitement (or the solitude) that the Crossroads of North American History has to offer. Note: Check out the online video: "On Board With The Henrico Marine Patrol" (June 8, 2015) and you will get a birds eye view concerning the beauty and care of this ancient waterway that we as users take very seriously. As the longest living professionally licensed United States Coast Guard Captain on the James River, and the first Maritime Commander of the Virginia Defense Force, I was honored to give opening comments, mid-video comments and closing comments about our beautiful waterway.

Guest access
Want to bring your personal fishing gear, bikes, kayaks, paddle boards, etc.? There is plenty of room on board the GiaMaria for them. One of the latest and very exciting recent developments surrounding Richmond Yacht Basin is that the Richmond National Battlefield Park bike route now has a direct link to the Virginia Capital Trail. This newly opened hard surfaced cycling/walking/running path covers more than 50 miles between Richmond, the capital of Virginia and the ancient colonial capitals of Jamestown and Williamsburg. As you will see, our area is truly a place where you can have it all.

Other things to note
I am a native Virginian who spent all of my childhood playing, working and living along the James and Appomattox Rivers. In fact I grew up in City Point, and on the same property where General Grant had his headquarters during the siege of Petersburg during the Civil War. And it was there at a very young age that I developed a love of our area, our people, and our history, and I will be glad to share what I know with my guests. However, I have spent many years traveling by boat, car, and plane throughout the country of Mexico. Then after retirement, I spent several years anchoring in the different island chains of the Bahamas, road tripping eastern Canada, traveling parts of Europe, sailing much of the Caribbean, vacationing in Dominican Republic, and cruising to Bermuda. And of course, I have spent many days by car traveling from coast to coast
in our own not to be equaled beautiful country.
