In the winter you can snowshoe, cross country ski, earn some turns by skinning up/skiing down, ride your snow bike, go sledding, or just sip hot cocoa by one of our two wood burning fireplaces.
The fall is magical as the aspen groves share their golden glow. Take a drive up Cuchara pass and visit the beautiful Apishapa Arch and enjoy the view, or drive up to Bear or Blue Lakes for an afternoon lunch by the river surrounded in fall color.

- "This beautiful home delivered every it promised and more. We have a large family (18 of us) and often use VRBOs for our vacations. This property is, by far, the most accurately depicted home we have stayed in. There was more than enough room for all of us to be together in the common areas while still affording everyone room to retreat to our own rooms with en-suite. The littles all absolutely loved the downstairs game/bunk room! The kitchen was the best stocked of any that we have stayed in, making cooking for this crew a breeze. The owners were even kind enough to allow us access to their cleaning tools and supplies. That may not sound like a big deal but with 6 kids under 6, it was much appreciated. Katrena was kind and responsive to whatever random question or concern I threw at her and made the entire process a breeze. We cannot recommend this property highly enough and Can’t wait to go back!"

Enjoy Colorado mountain living at its best! Escape the heat and enjoy the cool and crisp mountain air of the Southern Colorado Rockies. The spectacular Elk Meadows Lodge, with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms easily sleeps 9 persons. The main floor offers a large Great Room with high vaulted ceilings, a stunning fireplace and a beautiful rock wall, a dining area, the master suite with a walk-in closet and master bathroom with walk-in shower, a modern kitchen with all appliances, a laundry room and an office with spectacular views of the 14K mountains to the west: Mount Lindsey (14,042), Mount Blanca (14,344) and Little Bear Peak (14,043).
The lower level has its own entrance and consists of a large living area with beautiful aspen paneling and rock wall and a wood stove. There are 5 bedrooms, one with a king bed, two with a queen bed and one with a bunk bed (lower queen and upper twin). Additionally, there is a second kitchen with a sink, cooktop and large refrigerator, a full bathroom with double vanity, shower and bathtub, a sauna and a recreation room with exercise equipment. Two families could stay in the Lodge with each having their own entrance, kitchen, bathroom etc. There is a table tennis table in the large room downstairs.
The Lodge is in Forbes Park, a private, gated neighborhood on 13,000 acres, 12 miles East of Fort Garland and about 90 miles north of Taos, New Mexico.
In the winter we get moderate amounts of snow, the temperatures during the daytime are mostly in the 20-30 degree range. We have on average 300 days of sunshine per year. Snow-shoeing or cross-country skiing on undisturbed powder snow right out the door is an experience you will remember forever. Two pairs of cross-country skis (bring your own cross-country ski-shoes) and snowshoes for 3 persons are available for our guests. For downhill skiing the Ski areas of Taos, Monarch and Wolf Creek are about a 120-150 min. drive, so you can be on the slopes at 10:00 am, great for a day or more of skiing or snowboarding.
The roads in Forbes Park are plowed in the winter, yet you will need either an AWD or 4WD vehicle and good all-season tires or you’ll have to bring some snow chains for your car to get up some of the hills that will bring you to the Elk Meadows Lodge.
For hunters among you, the neighboring San Isabel National Forest is only a 20 min. drive from the Lodge with an abundance of elk and mule deer, bears, mountain lions and turkeys. Hunting season is a busy season for us, so make your reservations early.
Forbes Park has lots of wildlife like deer, elk, turkey, coyote, bears, beaver, many bird species and all kinds of smaller animals and there is nearby fishing and hunting. Within a 30-45 min. drive you will find The Sand Dunes National Park with artesian hot spring pools, Lathrop State Park, the Cumbres and Toltec scenic railroad, the Rio Grande scenic railroad and the picturesque towns of Fort Garland (with a Pioneer village and the old Fort where Kit Carson once resided), La Veta (lots of art galleries) and Cuchara (visit the Dog Bar or Timbers restaurant).
We invite you to our Mountain Lodge and enjoy the peace and quiet of Forbes Park.
Note: In June 2018 the Spring Creek fire went through Forbes Park. Fortunately the fire did not affect the Elk Meadows Lodge and the trees surrounding the Lodge. New aspen trees are already more than 10 feet tall, and the meadows are greener than before the fire.
- "Loved the roominess and communication of the management" - "Very nice accommodations and the property managers were very helpful and accommodating with the needs of the crew." - "Good" - "Comfortable accommodations in a rural setting with fabulous hosts. Except for the old burnt trees from a devastating wildfire in 2018 the Forbes Park area was heaven for us. Definitely need a new coffee maker, although current one still works well"

Time to unwind and relax? Spend some time at ROAMING ELK LODGE!! Our secluded log cabin is a true escape from the hustle and bustle of life.
The cabin is located at an altitude of 9,500 feet in the gated community of Forbes Park nestled in the Sangre Cristo Mountains, in historic San Luis Valley/ South Colorado. Forbes Park is characterized by alpine meadows, aspen, spruces, pines, some ponds and creeks. Miles and miles of unpaved roads offer plenty of opportunity for hiking.
The park is teeming with wildlife. The cabin is a short walk from the Big Lake. At the end of the day, take a stroll to the lake where elk and deer gather to drink. You may even encounter a black bear or a mountain lion. Hunting is not allowed in Forbes Park; however, it is permitted in neighboring San Isabel National Forest (permit needed). Far away from city lights, you will have an amazing view of countless stars. Just bundle up under a blanket and enjoy the view from the deck.
The cabin (1600 sq. ft.) has recently been remodeled and it is yours to enjoy. The cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, with all the needed appliances. Three spacious bedrooms (two queen beds and two twin beds). Two and a half bathrooms, of which one with a large whirlpool tub. If you need to do any laundry, you have full access to the washer and dryer.
Things to do nearby: * Hike Mount Blanca. At 14,345 ft. Mount Blanca is the dominant landmark of the San Luis Valley. * Great Sand Dunes National Park. Hike the tall dunes, try sandboarding and play in Medano Creek (seasonal). * Climb aboard……. Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. The train will take you through steep mountain canyons and high deserts along the Colorado and New Mexico border. * Historic Fort Garland Museum takes you back in time to the era of Kit Carson. * Take a historic walking tour in downtown Alamosa and enjoy a local beer at the brewery.

* Lathrop State Park. Take a swim at the lake or try your luck fishing and golfing.
San Luis Valley is a good place for birders who visit to wildlife refuges in Alamosa and Monte Vista which are a major stop-over for migratory birds, especially in spring and fall.
** Note: The Spring Fire of 2018 burned through Forbes Park. Three years later young aspen are sprouting everywhere, wildflowers are blooming and the mountain slopes are turning green again!
We invite you to spend some time at ROAMING ELK LODGE. Make it your home away from home and enjoy it as much as we do.

OUR BOOKINGS ARE CURRENTLY BEING HANDLED BY CUCHARA VACATION RENTALS. THE SUMMER IS OPEN BUT THE BOOKINGS NEED TO BE MADE THROUGH THEM.
At 9,200 feet elevation, you will enjoy the clean Colorado air and be amazed by the dazzling star show every night! We would like to share our new (to us) home in the Spanish Peaks area. This is a custom-built log home with all the amenities.
We are in the high mountain valley south of Cuchara. Sunrise in the morning over the Spanish Peaks, sunset in the evening over San Isabel National Forest. Wildlife roam the mountains. You may see deer, elk, big horn sheep, black bear – all sorts of mountain wildlife.
Our home is four bedroom, three bath, on three levels. The loft level is the double bed with ensuite bathroom. There are also two nice blowup twin beds in the loft - great for kids. The main level is the open living room with fireplace and fully equipped kitchen and the master bedroom with queen-sized bed and ensuite bathroom. A deck on the mai level gives a beautiful view of the mountains, the tree, the birds....A small private deck off the master bedroom is perfect for morning coffee or an evening aperitif! The lower level is two bedrooms, sharing one bath, with a private deck. We replaced the carpeting with wood flooring and the warmth of the main room is special.
Cuchara boasts two restaurants, The Cuchara Yacht Club and The Dog Bar. La Veta, only about 8 miles north, has lovely shops and restaurants. Don’t miss Alys’s Restaurant – best around for miles! There is usually a bakery open. Legends on Main has great food with Mexican highlights. Stiano is the Italian restaurant in the hotel with a lovely courtyard and delicious food. La Veta Mercantile offers wine or beer while you browse their shop for artwork or just something to take home to remind you of the trip! H's shop across the street from Charlie's grocery is a treasure! And Charlie's has about everything one would need including a little deli and an ice cream counter!
Higher Grounds, at the turning off the highway, has some breakfast food and coffee. And the Cuchara Mercantile at the base of the mountain has food and general supplies.
Nearby is Lathrop State Park - just west of Walsenburg. Golf course, beautiful lake for jet skiing or kayaking or just hiking around!
A drive south on Highway 12 (Highway of Legends) on the way to Trinidad provides unbelievable scenery. The lake you will pass on the way is great for fishing! North of La Veta on Highway 160 is The Sand Dunes Monument . Taos is a couple of hours away.
We discovered this area several years ago and fell in love with it. We bought a condo in 2014 and then loved the area so much that we bought the Log House.
We aren’t totally retired, so we can’t be there full time yet. So, we would like to share it with special people who will enjoy it as much as we do.
- "An absolutely wonderful cabin. All the amenities with a perfect location. WiFi and tv worked great. All 8 of us had a wonderful time. The hummingbirds were amazing and what a beautiful view. " - "The property was very well maintained and the house was stocked with everything we needed. The property was clean, easy to locate, and secluded enough for our likings. The views from the deck were amazing. I cannot tell you how wonderful the owner of the property was to work with. Due to the fires in July, even though the house and surroundings were not damaged, she was kind and gracious enough to let us reschedule for a later date so the town would have time to recover. The owner was very quick to respond to any and all questions we had. We have been to Cuchara 3 times in the last two years, and this by far was our favorite place to stay. You can see the sun rise and set from the deck! Absolutely beautiful! Thank you for allowing us to stay in your home. We will certainly visit you again."

The large parking area is used by occupants of the yurt and by occupants of the camper. Sometimes a car or ATV passes by on a dirt road near the site. From time to time UPS delivers items to our house and drives down our long driveway and past the site. Our little old dog sometimes barks but is not a nuisance barker. He spends most of his time indoors. The site is beautiful and peaceful. Located in a safe sparsely populated mountain forest community.

The site is located in a remote area close to the dunes and the closest small grocery store is in Blanca which is about 18 miles away. Alamosa, which has a City Market and a Safeway, is about 30 miles away. G maps shows that the yurt is about 4 miles by vehicle from The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.
Smoking is only allowed outdoors (by the fire pit ect.). Please let me know if you plan on smoking so I can leave a professional grade cigarette disposal unit at the site.

The kitchen is stocked with all the basics to cook your meals on-site.
Dry air, little light pollution, and high elevation (approximately 8,000') make Dunes Rest an excellent dark sky viewing location. This community is certified by the International Dark Sky Association. The stargazing is truly stunning!
The cabin is located in a gated community that does not allow open fires of any kind due to the risk of a wildfire. We have a zero-tolerance policy on smoking of any kind inside or outside the property.
The cabin is primarily heated by a propane fireplace in the living room operated by the thermostat. There is electric baseboard heating in the bedrooms and bathrooms as well. There is no AC, so it will be warm in the summertime, but open the windows at night and enjoy the cool nighttime temps.

- "The property was as described - comfortable and full of amenities, located in an area from which beautiful and awe-inspiring scenery was visible from every room in the property as well as the outside patios and deck. Celina and Seth were very gracious hosts and easily accessible. We had a wonderful stay!" - "Gorgeous location with incredible views from every window. This home is well stocked and has excellent bedding, beds and pillows. Furniture is nice and comfortable. The hot tub, patio and patio furniture is great too. It is immaculately clean, which we appreciated with 2 -1year olds. We’ve never stayed in a cleaner VRBO, truly spotless!! The one and only thing I would change, adding window blinds. None of the windows have blinds, including the bathrooms. I understand the views shouldn’t be shrouded, however it was hard to have babies take naps with so much incredible light! We would love to stay here again in the future, if grand babies come we will bring a car windshield cover or something similar for baby naps. Cecelia and Seth were awesome and responded to evey request within minutes. Stay here!! You won’t regret it. "

The yurt is about 150 feet from the camper and there are trees and other vegetation separating the yurt from the camper. The large parking area is used by occupants of the yurt and by occupants of the camper. Smoking is only allowed outdoors (by the fire pit ect.). Please let me know if you plan on smoking so I can leave a professional grade cigarette disposal unit at the site.
- "We enjoyed our stay in the RV, the host was attentive and it came equipped with everything we needed. My only complaint would be the location of the bed in the bedroom, it’s a full and up against the wall, I get claustrophobic so sleeping on that side of the bed was difficult for me since my partner gets up at night. Other than that we had a good time!" - "Had a good over night stay here" - "The winter water shutdown was difficult to do dishes and make meals… other than that, great stay and very accommodating with great views and outdoor amenities. Hoping to book both cabins in the future for our next adventure!" - "The owners have thought of everything. Super clean inside and out. The cabin is what I would call cozy and compact, but nothing was missing due to size. Kitchen is very well stocked. Plenty of extra towels and blankets. The outdoor amenities extended the living space and we were able to grill breakfast on the deck, soak in the hot tub, nap in a hammock, and toast some marshmallows over a fire pit. The property provides an experience that far exceeds the possibilities of a hotel. The drive to the cabin is about 10 minutes off the highway and neighbors are not close. The views are stunning! Communication with hosts was excellent and access to the cabin was easy. We stayed with our elementary and middle school age kiddos and it was nice to have privacy of a separate sleeping space for them. They had fun climbing the ladder to the loft. There are two lofts in the tiny house and both allow whom ever is resting up there to still be apart of the group and conversations. There is a small room for changing under one loft, a main sitting area by the fire, and a cozy nook under the other loft. The entire wildflower is around 210 square ft.
Other things to note

This is a real lived-in country home, colorful, eclectic, a bit rough in some ways, un-manicured, full of books and art, and a true relief from city pressures. Kids will love to gather eggs from our six hens, and there's lots of space for ATV's, bikes, trailers, boats, and khayaks. We do have lots of stairs to climb, and we're at 8,400 ft altitude, so slow down!!
Guest access
Your host lives completely separately downstairs, with his own private entrance. Your hostess lives in her studio way up on the hill behind the house, so your privacy is assured. It's very quiet here, so bring your music or your guitar, get outside, hunt for arrowheads or deer sheds, and prepare to unwind in the hillside swing or hammock.
Other things to note
Please, no guns or weapons in the house. There are limited hunting rights, and you can get your tags seasonally, but please keep your guns in your car or somewhere else. We've lived peacefully here for over 30 years, with no trouble ever. A peaceful heart has no reason to build defenses. And if you hunt, we're glad to suggest some local outfitters.

The space
Our cabin runs on 100% renewable energy and has power backup in case of an electric outage. Cabin comes with a full kitchen, a smart tv, high speed fiber wire internet, and space heating. For those of you that like to sleep in, each bedroom has blackout curtain’s.
The property is a quiet place with plenty of open space. It’s up at 9,000ft elevation. There is a parking pad that fits 2 vehicles, and a fire pit with spark guard for campfires, if we are not under a fire restriction. We put a cover on the deck so it can be enjoyed in any weather. With the deck cover we had to update the grill to a Black Stone.
Parts of the park are burned from the 2018 spring fire with fallen trees, however there’s a lot of new growth now, and wildflowers in the spring and early Fall. There’s a lot of roads/trails for hiking, exploring and mountain biking. It also has unique access to the Spanish Peaks Wilderness area at the back of the park. Though you can not hunt in the private community of Forbes Park itself, Forbes Park does back to National Forest land that is very hunt able.
Check out is at noon but please feel free to let us know if you need a little longer to pack up from your stay.
Once you get off the highway, the roads to the cabin are dirt roads that are maintained. In the winter months 4WD is recommended. The park plows the main roads first and then the side roads. Since our cabin is close to the front of the park and our lot is close to the main road, our street usually gets plowed quickly after the main roads. However, sometimes it can take a day or two to plow depending on the storm. Our driveway does not have any snow removal.
Guest access
Forbes park is a gated community. During your stay we’ll provide an access card to enter and exit the park gate. As our guest you'll have access to the cabin, covered deck, and common space around the cabin.
Other things to note
We’ve included a small telescope for looking at the stars at night and binoculars for wildlife viewing.
We put a cover on the deck so it can be enjoyed in all weather. With the new deck, we had to upgrade the grill to a Black Stone.

9. Sauna & Exercise Equipment: Follow all posted Sauna safety rules. To reduce the risk of overheating 1. exit immediately if uncomfortable, dizzy or sleepy 2. supervise children at all times 3. check with a doctor before use if pregnant, in poor health or under medical care 4. breathing heated air in conjunction with consumption of alcohol, drugs or medication may cause unconsciousness.
Sauna Safety:
A dry sauna can be a soothing way to relax or sweat out some stress. Dry saunas are heated rooms that raise the body's temperature, causing you to sweat and relax. But there are certain things you should be aware of before stepping into the sauna in order to keep yourself safe and healthy.
Avoid Alcohol and Medication:
Consuming too much alcohol or taking certain prescription medications may inhibit your body from producing sweat, which can lead to your body overheating. Avoid consuming alcohol, and check with your doctor about prescription medications you may be taking before you decide to spend any amount of time in a sauna.
Disease:
Saunas can be dangerous for people suffering from certain chronic diseases as well as people in poor physical condition. Chronic diseases and conditions such as obesity can make it more difficult for the body to regulate its internal temperature, causing the body to overheat and leading to a dangerous increase in core temperature. Talk with your doctor before using a sauna if you suffer from a chronic illness or are in poor physical shape. People with a history of high blood pressure or other heart disease also should be wary before stepping in the sauna, as the high temperatures can cause an accelerated heart rate.
Stay Hydrated:
Due to the nature of saunas causing you to sweat, it's advisable to drink plenty of water before and after your sauna session. Drink between two and four glasses of water immediately after you leave the sauna in order to replenish your body's water supply and prevent dehydration. Too little water in your body's system can lead to electrolyte imbalance.
Limit Time:
Don't stay in the sauna for an extended period of time. Being in that heat for too long can cause your body temperature to rise to unsafe levels, so limit your session to 15 minutes at the most. If you begin to feel nauseated, dizzy or otherwise unwell, leave the sauna immediately. These could be signs that your body is overheating, becoming dehydrated or exhausted. Never visit a sauna if you feel sick in any way. Take your time cooling down afterward and avoid going out into the cold air immediately after leaving the sauna, as rapid changes in temperature can be harmful to your body.
Sauna safety rules
• Please shower before and after using the sauna. Use the provided towels to sit on while in the sauna.
• Children ages five and under are not permitted in the sauna.
• Children between the ages of six and 16 must be accompanied by an adult in the sauna at all times.
• Pregnant women and persons suffering from heart disease, diabetes, high or low blood pressure, circulatory or respiratory problems, seizures or epilepsy should not enter the sauna without prior medical consultation.
• Do not use the sauna while under the influence of any type of alcohol, drugs, anticoagulants, antihistamines, vasoconstrictor, vasodilators, stimulants, hypnotics, narcotics or tranquilizers.
• Participants are required to bring a towel to sit on when using the sauna.
• Remove all metal jewelry prior to entering the sauna.
• The surface of the rocks, heater and surrounding area can be extremely hot. Exercise caution.
• Prolonged use of sauna not recommended due to fatiguing effects. Limit yourself to a maximum of 15 minutes.
• Leave the sauna immediately if you experience any nausea, dizziness, hot flashes, cold chills, headaches or other discomfort.
• Drink plenty of fluids before and after leaving the sauna.
• Do not use the sauna to dry clothes, swimsuits or towels or place materials near the heater or guard fence.
High Altitude Sickness:
