The Space:
Guests will enter through the front door by using a digital keypad. From the entryway, the dining room with a large farm table is straight ahead, and the kitchen is to the right. We stock the kitchen with all essential kitchenware items to prepare meals during your stay and provide a second dining table with four chairs.
For those working during your stay, the room off the kitchen is a quiet spot with a desk and chair.
Continue through the kitchen to the hallway leading to a full bathroom, the basement, and the living room. The first full bathroom has a stand-up shower.
The living room has a queen sofa bed, two armchairs, and a SmartTV.

The spacious basement has a large laundry room, a separate bedroom, and a kitchenette area with a mini fridge and microwave- kids and adults will enjoy this space! The main living space/open room has a pool table, a futon, and a full bed. The basement bedroom has two twin-over-twin bunk beds and a full bed.

Left of the front door is three bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The first bedroom has a full bed. The second room is the master with two full beds and an ensuite bathroom. The last bedroom has two full beds.

“I am a very light sleeper. Even the smallest noises wake me at night. When we moved here (we live on the property), it only took me one night of no sleep to get used to the train noise. For light sleeper guests who choose to book anyway, expect at least one night of poor sleep getting used to the noise.”

“I am not a light sleeper at all. The train noise and traffic noise don’t bother me. There isn’t a lot of outside light that the curtains and blinds can’t block out, so I didn’t have trouble falling or staying asleep. If you’re used to city living, you’ll feel right at home with the noises as you fall asleep.”

Our home features multiple Common Areas that are available to you. The main level features a common living room area. Woodland animals & birds frequent the living space in our back yard including deck and firepit which are lovely spaces to relax.

The lower level in our ranch home is expansive and set up for relaxation and fun. A common use family room where you may listen to music, watch tv, shoot a game of billiards on the pool table (with Simonis cover), play board games or read a book in a quiet nook. The adjacent full kitchen is stocked with all the basics for you.

We rent 4 bedrooms in our home for a total of 8 guests. All of our bedrooms provide peaceful, wooded views and have fresh & comfortable bed linens for a good night’s rest. You’ll find towels, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, hair dryer and other bathroom necessities. We’re even prepared with other items you may have forgotten.

During your stay
As your hosts, we are dedicated to making you comfortable & will treat you with kindness & care. We find joy when intentionally preparing for and delighting our guests with delicious food. Built in 1877, and remodeled with current comforts, Kownover Farmstead is a registered historic home. Secluded with a separate quaint cottage, old silo, and pasture, you'll enjoy the history and peace that comes with being our guest!

The space
Designated for family enjoyment, this home has history, space to spread out, modern comforts and the peace of being secluded in a wooded haven, yet restaurants are within walking distance! And, it's all yours! This is NOT a primary or shared residence. Its sole purpose is to provide you with a relaxing getaway without having to worry about host belongings or clutter! A modern kitchen with granite counter tops and amazing appliances greet you upon entry. The large formal dining room will take you back to the 1800's and feels more like a ballroom with its 11' ceilings. The stair landings will make you say "awww!" The parlor and living rooms provide main floor gathering spaces, while the former office provides a main floor bedroom. There is also a full bathroom on the main floor. We are excited to tell you that the sun room has been converted into a spa room, complete with a hot tub and sauna (separate access fee)!! The upper level has 4 bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths. The lower level has a more rustic feel like a pub, with natural wood beams overhead, and stone walls. The lower level also has another large bedroom as well as a full bathroom. Outside, if you didn't see it when you came in, you will find an amazing patio, complete with gas grill. Ask us about that cute little cottage beside it! The rest of the farmstead has a large garage for our maintenance equipment. Check out the old silo beyond the parking area! Don't climb it, though! In our site photos, you’ll notice there are real hops growing on the side of the silo. The back pasture is more of an orchard with apple, cherry and other fruit trees that grace the property, and we have grape vines there, too.

The whole property is yours!! Since we don't live on the property, we don't have any plans to be in your way. We will provide you access information for your arrival, and instructions for departure.

Notre Dame is the biggest attraction of our community, with a beautiful campus and ivy-league architecture, top-tier sporting events and world class concerts. This college town is also home to Bethel College, St. Mary's College, Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) and Ivy Tech. But, don't discount the fun of Amish Acres' shows and the flea markets of Shipshewana, South Bend Chocolate Factory, and our own South Bend Cubs minor league baseball team! About 45 minutes away is New Buffalo, MI, where you can enjoy the entertainment at "Four Winds Casino Resort" and cap off the day with a beautiful sunset in Lake Michigan. Wine country of southwest lower Michigan, and Fernwood Botanical Gardens (Niles) are just a short drive away! Canoe the St. Joseph River or kayak South Bend's East Race. The Morris Performing Arts Center in South Bend attracts major concerts and off-Broadway shows, and is home to the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. The spacious basement has a large laundry room, a separate bedroom, and a kitchenette area with a mini fridge and microwave- kids and adults will enjoy this space! The main living space/open room has a pool table, a futon, and a full bed. The basement bedroom has two twin-over-twin bunk beds and a full bed.

Left of the front door is three bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The first bedroom has a full bed. The second room is the master with two full beds and an ensuite bathroom. The last bedroom has two full beds.

We hope you find time to enjoy our patio and large backyard. A charcoal grill is available!

Guest access
The house has a lockbox at the front door which will provide you access to the house. The code will be provided upon check-in. You will have full and private access to the home.

The guest count you provide must be accurate as there can be additional guest fees. Notify us if you need to adjust the guest count before arrival. A fine of $25 per night will be applied for each undeclared guest.

The Field House is a large facility including courts for volleyball and basketball, a turf field for soccer and flag football, and 12 pickleball courts. If you have tournaments at this location, the Mishawaka Fieldhouse is less than 2 miles away and only an 8-minute drive!

Wineries/Breweries:
Our home is right on the Michigan border and a quick drive gives you plenty of options to choose from. Our home would make a great stay for someone wanting to take a day or weekend trip to try out these locations. Needing ideas? Get a bunch of family and friends together and rent a bus for the day to drive you around while you enjoy drinks and company with one another.

Snowmobile Trails:
For a winter trip, a drive into Michigan allows access to state snowmobile trails.

Notre Dame:
If you are from out of town, Notre Dame has a beautiful campus that is great to explore. There is plenty to do and restaurants all over.
