Cozy cabin near some of California's most pristine pine forest, waterholes and fishing, and only 9 miles from the Lassen National Park's Southwest Visitor Center. The town of Mineral is a small island of private cabins surrounded by a sea of National Forest and National Park lands. An adventurer's dream. You could walk out the backdoor of the cabin, into the forest, and arrive at the Lassen Visitor Center without crossing a single paved road, or seeing another human. Just bears.
The space
Our happy little cabin is about 1,000 square feet, with one bedroom downstairs, and the other up a steep, narrow staircase that leads into a bright room with giant windows, giving the impression you are tucked comfortably among the trees. People say it's their favorite room in the cabin. You'll see why.
All the beds are new Tuft and Needle mattresses.
The recently renovated bathroom has a restored Victorian claw foot bathtub -- awwwwww -- and a separate shower. Find your zen with a candle and a book (and if you're coming from the Bay Area you can stop at the organic loofah and lavender farm, MoonBeam Farm, in the valley below the cabin.)
The kitchen is compact, but we added a gas-burning stove and accoutrements for those of you who like to cook big. The Mineral Lodge in town also has dining, and is about a 5 minute walk from the cabin.
We have a wood stove. It was custom built by a small company outside of Sacramento. It has little gnomes on it. They're cute. And you can put wood in it, get cozy, and stay warm. But remember, it gets hot. Real hot. Burn you hot.
Fun fact: Our cabin was originally built in 1928. And when we renovated it, we found the original blueprints for the two-story addition added more than 40 years ago -- and we uncovered some of the original siding and paint (bright red!) now nearly 100 years old. It was originally built shortly after Lassen volcano last erupted.
Guest access
We have a dirt driveway with parking for two or three cars. In the winter, per snowy conditions, the driveway can get slick and AWD/4WD makes life easier.
Other things to note...
There is so much National Forest, National Park and National Wilderness land around the cabin. It's amazing. So bring your hiking boots, bikes, skis, climbing gear, swim suit, fishing poles, and all the outdoor stuff that brings you joy. I have some hiking books and maps at the cabin. But you might wanna do some map exploring before you get here. There is a swimming hole and waterfall in town, plus Lake Almanor about 30 minutes away, also Ishi Wilderness down the hill, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Lassen Volcanic Wilderness, Caribou Wilderness, Thousand Lakes Wilderness and, of course, Lassen National Forest. It's why the travel writers constantly call this area the hidden gem of California.

Start your stay by walking five minutes into town and join the locals for a cup of coffee and a breakfast bagel (Coffee Station), then take a stroll around the Historic Red Barn (Olson Barn circa 1914) at the end of town and walk in the meadow at the edge of Lake Almanor. Take your boat south 20 minutes to the public boat launch and go fishing for the day. Take a visit to one of our National Parks (Lassen Volcanic Park). Upon your return, you can relax by the creek while BBQing your dinner. Kids love to play around the creek and partake in outdoor games while the adults have an evening drink in the covered porch. Later you can have dinner at the outdoor picnic table; afterwords, take an evening walk up Lassen Street and admire the old historic homes of yesteryear while hearing the faint sounds of nearby grazing cattle.
Not in the mood to cook? Take a two-minute walk for the best pizza and salad in Northern California (The Pizza Factory). A five-minute drive away is fine dining at the Steak House (Timber House) and other dining choices from Mexican to Chinese food. In a golfing mood, there are two golf courses within a 20-minute drive from the house. If you like to bike, there are several bike trails and logging roads around Chester to explore.
- "We loved this house. All the amenities you could want. We were very impressed with the well-stocked kitchen! Very family friendly. Great location, close to Lake Almanor and Lassen National Park." - "We loved waking up, making a cup of coffee in the beautifully stocked kitchen and heading out on to the front patio to listen to the birds and the sounds of the creek that runs through the front yard. The two downstairs bathrooms are spacious and new, large living room to relax, play games, read and the property is walking distance to Chester and just a short drive to the lake. Also, huge plus, it's a dog friendly spot. We loved staying here. Thank you so much!"

- "Stayed with 2 families (8 people total) and it worked well. About a 20 minute drive to the southern entrance to Lassen park. Nice outdoor space for grilling, hanging out and seeing friendly deer. The kitchen worked well for cooking. Bathrooms are ok but worn. Wifi and laundry worked well. Solid boardgame collection (Twilight Struggle!). Basically nothing nearby, so stock up on gas and groceries before you get here." - "Our group had an excellent stay! Everything was just as described. We enjoyed the hammocks in the backyard, the large selection of games and puzzles, the variety of room setups, and if we hadn’t been so tired from our travels, I’m sure the fire pit was amazing! If you have a baby that is mobile, the stairs are a bit treacherous. I wish we had brought a baby gate but didn’t expect one to be provided. Would definitely stay again!"

" - "Clean and comfortable " - "We enjoyed our stay at Latitude 40. We were comfortable and close (less than 1 mile) to our venue. There were a number of choices for a place to eat, as well as a nearby grocery store. There were good kitchen facilities and adequate cooking supplies. The host had provided coffee and tea choices and 2 different coffee machines (including a Keurig for both coffee and tea). And the host provided a basket with a good selection of snacks. We would consider a return visit."

Take it easy at this unique and tranquil getaway. Our little house is a smart home! The blinds go up and down with a tap on the light switch. The tv in the living room comes up out of a cabinet. Do you like heated towels? We have those as well!
If you enjoy the outdoors, there are trails close by for hiking, the lake has a lot to offer or you could drive to Mt. Lassen and explore the volcano!
Our little town has specialty stores, sporting goods store and restaurants! Hope you come visit soon!
The space
Our little house is a one bedroom, one bathroom home. We have a tv in the bedroom and one in the living room. We have Wi-Fi on premises. We have a single use coffee pot in the kitchen and a hair dryer in the bathroom! Nothing is worse then getting someplace and not having these two items!
There are three (3) steps to get into the house, but once inside only the shower has a lip to step over.
There is a laundromat in town if you are in need of that service.
You are also able to take your RZR straight from the little house to the nearby logging roads to ride and go on an adventure.
Please take in consideration… we are located in a small mountain town. Our cell phone services can be very spotty, but the trade-off is … it is a very beautiful destination!
Guest access
Our guests will have access to the whole little house and the patio! And parking is right outside the gate to the property!
Other things to note
Our home does have three (3) steps to get into the house.
No pets are allowed, no extra over night guests are allowed without prior notice.
- "I’m 1of 7 children, the oldest is no longer w/us. The other 6 come up and all get cabins. Each night 1 of us has to cook dinner. It’s very interesting on what everyone makes, all delicious. Dessert was ice cream pie, vim I cream w/vanilla wafers & bus of brickle" - "The property was very clean and well provisioned, and kitchen and bath were spotless. Wine chiller, mixer, icemaker in frig. Cutlery, and service for 4. Towel heater in bath and European toilet made for pleasant experience. Modern and up-to-date with touch screen controls for lights, shades, and viewing. Charging stations by bed. Cozy and comfortable. Plenty of seating, pillows, blankets. Host readily available, friendly and helpful. Asked for extra towels and no hesitation providing them. Coffee, and other cooking essentials (oil, salt/pepper) some condiments available. Mill Creek is also only minutes away — great food and famous milkshakes.
Battle Creek is less than 6 miles away and has great trout fishing.
A few things we love about our cabin…

- "Tony was super helpful and easy to communicate with before, during, and after our stay. Couldn’t ask for a better host. The cabin was beautiful, the location was excellent, and our weather was perfect. Only reason for four stars on the description is that we were all just a little disappointed that there wasn’t a hot tub, since the house overview had it marked, but on reading the description more carefully, we saw they were just referring to the bath tub downstairs."
