- "This is a fantastic, clean, affordable and cozy place to stay. At night the wildlife wakes up and sings you to sleep with really cool croaks, tweets and whistles. It’s off the beaten path just enough to get some quiet, but still close to the main highway to reach the national park easily. Owner is very communicative and friendly. We spent a lot of time out in the screened-in lanai and in the evenings I sat out there with the lights off and eyes closed to enjoy the sound bath of nature. Super meditative! We spent a few days exploring the volcanoes (less than half an hour away) and Black Sand Beach (about an hour). We ate out both nights at Coconut Grill (our kids loved the fare). The house itself is cute, well equipped with fans and appliances. It was great to be able to wash our clothes in the washer/dryer. Beds were comfy. We stayed in our last night and cooked so we could enjoy the house and lanai. We were surprised that we weren't too bothered by mosquitos even though a few slipped in. We tried to seal a tiny hole in the screen in the lanai with the only "tape" we could find (a bandaid). Appliances (stove/oven, microwave, washer/dryer), showers, etc are great, but you may need to bring your own spices, foil, maybe an aluminum pan for baking if you plan to cook a lot, and a lighter for the mosquito coil. (Owner should consider adding a silicone spatula for use with the non-stick cookware). We made breakfast every morning and a fairly elaborate dinner our last night. Grocery stores/restaurants are about 26 minutes away. Once you pull into the property, you will feel like you're on your own secluded tropical island. We loved our stay and hope to return someday."

This peaceful country home is considered a " private residence" with a detached living area. It is located in a rural area away from tourism and off the beaten path. There are two separate structures situated in a way to provide privacy from one another. There is a main 1-bedroom house (this is the rental) and a smaller "cottage". We are located 1/2 way between Volcano National Park and Hilo; being 1296 sf under roof and a totally furnished 1 bedroom, 1 bath house on 2 acres. The relaxation experience is enhanced by a private 1-person whirlpool tub, quiet surroundings, and lots of songbirds. The bedroom has one queen size memory foam bed with and a walk-in closet. The living room has a sofa and a futon that will lay flat. The dining area consists of a 4-seat dining table and a kitchen bar. The bathroom has a walk-in shower and a whirlpool tub. There is a front porch for relaxing and listening to the birds. You will find this house very comfortable with all the amenities you need. Everything is included; all appliances; including washer / dryer, microwave, dishwasher, dishes, towels etc. Just bring your suitcase. There are many adventures to explore in East Hawaii such as Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, black and green sand beaches, tropical gardens, newly formed (2017 and 2018) lava fields and cones. It is a newer house and although this house is close to various vacation spots, it is off the beaten path located in a country atmosphere. The rate is very affordable, allowing you to stay just a little bit longer in Paradise. I hope that you will come relax and explore our beautiful Island. INTERNET** Internet usage is unlimited data but after using 100GB the speed slows down behind other users. If you need a lot of fast internet you would have to provide your own hotspot.

The property is located between Hilo town (30 min drive) and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (25 min drive), convenient to explore the windward side of the island.

Our duplex home consists of three bedroom main house and one bedroom/guest house. Both units are currently being rented out. The units are separated by laundry room and carport - the shared space with other guests.

The one-bedroom guest house (left side of the duplex) is bright with lots of natural sun light and breezy trade winds. Two private entrances, a wrap-around lanai and a large private front and back porches where you can enjoy your morning cup of coffee or evening cocktail drinks.

The bedroom has a comfortable king size bed and a full bed with 100% cotton sheets. A full size pull-out sofa in the living room sleeps additional two guests.
The kitchen is equipped with a full size refrigerator, hot plate, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, air fryer, and other essentials for cooking. The bathrooms are furnished with clean towels, soap, shampoo, conditioner and hair dryer.

Our water comes from the rain water catchment system, very common for this island. It is filtered by UV light system, but it may not be best for drinking. You may want to bring your own bottled water.
The laundry room and carport are common area to be shared with other guests staying in the three bedroom main house.
The gate lock code and other check in instructions will be provided a day before your arrival.

- "If all you need is aplace to sleep, this is it. The proerty is located on a dirt road (which you are on for 2 miles) There is a bed, which was comfortable, toilet, sink, and shower, with a small microwave and smaller refridgerator (think showbox size) There is electricity and WiFi as well. There is a small narrow ladder/staircase to reach the bedroom and the toilet is also located there as well, so no fumbling with going up and down at night.. Volcano National Park is located within 20 minutes and Hilo about 40 minutes. Their water system utilizes reclimated rainwater, so water consveration should be kept in mind when staying there. One morning, there was no water and Kevin was very responsive to the issue and fixed it quickly. We would stay there again."

- "I needed a place to stay while I was arranging a new residence in the area. I know the area and had been wondering about Fern Acres specifically. The area of the neighborhood was fairly quiet. The property is well maintained, and the room is nice and clean. We made pizza in the brick oven one evening. Delicious! I used the kitchen most nights. I loved the stone walled outdoor shower. MISC
There are a total of four cabins on the one-acre lot. The owners and groundskeeper are on property including a dogs, cats, and chickens. We are a 501c3 nonprofit dog rescue so there are various dogs/puppies here at any given time. We love when our guests take dogs on field trips and/or walks as well! =) We homestead and have many foods growing such as lilikoi, bananas, papayas, pineapple, fig, strawberries, poha berries, sugar cane, lemons, blood oranges, rosemary, basil and more!

Rainforest massages are available starting at $100 for the hour.

Please note the main image is not visible from the cabin. We are about about a 30 minute drive from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. All of our cabins are equipped with propane heaters for comfort. Winters are also rainy season so if traveling to the Big Island in the winter, we suggest some light layers for warmth, a raincoat and rain boots.

There are a total of four cabins on the one-acre lot. The owners and groundskeepers are on property including dogs, cats, and chickens. We homestead and have many foods growing such as lilikoi, bananas, papayas, pineapple, fig, strawberries, poha berries, sugar cane, lemons, blood oranges, rosemary, basil and more! We are a 501c3 nonprofit dog rescue so there are various dogs/puppies here at any given time. We love when our guests take dogs on field trips and/or walks as well! =)

Rainforest massages are available starting at $100 for the hour.

We are about about a 30 minute drive from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and a lovely central location to many other places on the island. Keep in mind, we are a BIG island so more driving is required here than the other islands.

We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. All of our cabins are equipped with propane heaters for comfort. Winters are also rainy season so if traveling to the Big Island in the winter, we suggest some light layers for warmth, a raincoat and rain boots.

- "This was a very clean home. Housekeeper sets the home up beautifully! The beds are firm and the pillows are very....floppy. It's fun watching the wild pigs root up the yard from the lani 😝 downside was the neighbors listened to their news sooo loud on their lani when they were home. That we didn't even want to sit outside and even had to closed some windows at one point. Luckily they were only there for two days of our visit! The man was all smiles and friendly.....it was just overwhelming loud news/tv/radio or what have you that was a bummer to have drowning out the beautiful sounds of the forest. THE STORY OF BAUMHAUS

At the end of 2021 we fulfilled ourselves the dream of building an independent OFF-GRID living space in the middle of a lush Hawaiian Rain Forest. Every piece of this building it was designed and hand crafted by us,made with much love for details and functionality!

Our parking area can accommodate up to four cars. After you park your vehicle you will be led on a lava formation and gravel trail (approximately 150ft) until you reach the treehouse.

BAUMHAUS consists of TWO 360 VIEW TRANSPARENT ROOMS, when you book under this listing called “Hawaiian tree house” you ll get a KING SIZE BED room (1 room), the other room ll be locked and you will still have the full tree house for your self.
If you would like to fit 4 people and have 2 rooms available please book under the listing called “delightful”.

The rooms are connected with an expansive wooden deck and , fully equipped KITCHEN plus a BATHROOM that includes a BATH TUB with a dimming light.

In your bedroom you will find a KING SIZED BED, a puristic piece of furniture for your clothes and power outlets, with minimalistic designs that bring you closer to nature again.

The feeling of being indulged in nature lets you relax and find inner peace, as the surrounding flora is gently swaying in the wind.
In addition to that outdoor living situation you will find a small GYM setup below the platform while the birds sing.

BAUMHAUS is basically a part of this ecosystem. As it rains the tanks fill up, providing drinking water quality as the collected water runs through 3 different filters. When the sun is shining this energy is also harvested with our solar system and stored in a battery bank. A real eco friendly place where natural resources are used sustainably.

THE LOCATION & NATURE

The location is right in the middle between Hilo and VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK, both within a distance of 20 miles. The road leading to the property is paved.
The place provides a very calm surrounding as the few neighbours are also enjoying their privacy here in midst of the forest.
From the parking lot you will have a short walk over a winding trail that brings you to the elevated nature resort which is 12 feet high in the air. The entrance of the BAUMHAUS is a spacious staircase that leads to a big trapdoor, which is hydraulically supported to let you be able to enter your vacation stay with ease. As you set foot on the deck you enter a whole new world of freedom and nature connectedness.
Imagine a mystical wood deck on “eye level” with the lush surrounding Hawaiian Rainforest. As you take a look around you will notice a calming green paradise of endemic Ohias and Guave trees, as well as Papaya, Banana and Avocado trees. The forest is also home to a great variety of birds, that can be watched very well, especially from the elevated platform. At nightfall the typically Hawaiian coqui frogs will provide your melody for the evening.

TERMS OF CONDITIONS

As the deck is 12 feet elevated we will not take responsibility for falling off in any case. The deck is secured with a roped fence but it takes additional care especially for children as there is a gap between the ropes.
Only one person at a time is allowed to be in the “floating net”.
Please be aware of not wasting electric power or water irresponsibly since the resources are limited and only provided by nature.
Any damages must be reported.

HOUSE RULES

Close the trap door slowly, dont let it fall

Don’t take anything from the house out of the house.

You are not allowed to bring any guest from outside for security reasons, this place is designed and insure only for 2 guest.

The fire pit cant be taken inside any closed room, you must keep it outside for security reasons.

Just one person at the time is allowed on the net for safety reasons(it just resist the weight for one person)

No pets are allowed in this place.

Don’t step in the toilet lid, it’s fragile and you can fall down.

Don’t lean agains the manila ropes (fence) for security reasons

🐶 We have a 501(c)(3) dog rescue so there are quite a few dogs here at any given time. Dogs, cats, and chickens are on the property. Dogs are outside. If this is an issue upon arrival please let us know PRIOR to your checkin date. We usually have rescues here along with our own dogs. They may bark upon guest arrivals or when we aren’t here. If this is an issue, you might be better suited for a different property. We do provide ear plugs in case any occasional barking is bothersome. 🐝 🦋 🐛 We have purposefully planted many things for our pollinators and also have a monarch butterfly sanctuary so you will often see them flying around! Our other property has hives on it but we filter and jar the honey here. This cabin theme is dedicated to our bees which help provide us with the fruits and vegetables growing on the homestead 🐝

The ULTIMATE rainforest experience while providing comforts to make your stay enjoyable. Live in traditional Hawaiian style homes! We have strong wifi and grid power so there is never a shortage. Although we have everything you will want to be comfortable, we have done so in a sustainable way, with about 1/4 of the energy consumption of the average household.

This rustic, under the sea themed jungalow with exposed stud walls with built in shelves for a light, open feel, features a mini fridge, propane heater, private full bathroom and covered lanai. There is one queen bed in the cabin. We have one other cabin with a queen bed as well as a listing where we have combined the two cabins for a max of 4 people. The cabins are right next to each other making it ideal for groups! This cabin does not have a window.

We provide a detailed welcome packet with a variety of mostly free but some paid must see/do activities on the island that our past guests have loved!

We have a hot tub deck with a plug n play spa. Use of this is NOT included in your nightly stay but is available as an add on for $25/night. Please note that the $25/night is not for the nights you would want to use it but for each night of your stay regardless if you use it. The cheapest rental on island, with a hot tub is AT LEAST double our nightly price.

TOURS
At night your ears will be greeted by the forest with sounds of coqui frogs. Many people love them. Please search for Bathing Suits and Rain Boots on YouTube to find a video of what our property sounds like at night. Our channel also features videos of tours we offer. More to be uploaded, check back often! Our tours include off the beaten path adventures ranging from sunrises and geothermal Kings baths, to hikes that lead to waterfalls! All tours are local gems that you will not find online or offered by any other tour guide agency.

BEACH GEAR
We have boogie boards, surf boards, masks and snorkels (no fins) available for guests as well as beach towels!

ANIMALS
We have a 501(c)(3) non-profit dog rescue so there are a number of dogs on the one acre property at any given time. Guests should only interact with loose dogs on the property and not ones in kennels without owner discretion.

MISC
There are a total of four cabins on the one-acre lot. While the cabins are close they are still private. We feel for the price we charge in comparison to what others charge even to sleep in tents here, that although the cabins may be close, we still provide a comfortable stay at an affordable price.

The owners are on property including dogs, cats, and chickens. We have a non-profit dog rescue so there are a number of dogs here at any given time. We do our best to keep their barking to a minimum, but occasionally, there is still some. They have tons of play time, enrichment toys, walks, cuddles, etc. but can bark more when we are not home especially. We provide ear plugs for this as well as rain or any other occasional noise that you may incur.

We homestead and have many foods growing such as lilikoi, bananas, papayas, pineapple, fig, strawberries, poha berries, sugar cane, lemons, blood oranges, rosemary, basil and more!

Rainforest massages are available starting at $100 for the hour.

We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. All of our cabins are equipped with propane heaters for comfort. Winters are also rainy season so if traveling to the Big Island in the winter, we suggest some light layers for warmth, a raincoat and rain boots.

If you are looking for a quiet cabin in the woods, look no farther. This simple cabin is set in beautiful Fern Forest near Volcanoes National Park. Large screened windows and a screen door let the breeze through and give a great view of the forest and access to breezes, birdsong, and the sounds of the coqui frogs. The metal roof with UV shield keeps the cabin cool when it is sunny and allows for the soothing sound of rain when it is not. Cleaning fee and breakfast are included in the price.

The space
The guest cabin is a stand alone bedroom for privacy. It contains a queen bed with energy cancelling memory foam. The bathroom is down a short walk through the woods in the centrally located kitchen/bathroom cabin. There are breakfast foods available such as pancake mix, oatmeal packets, granola, eggs and instant coffee. The kitchen can also be used for cooking a simple lunch or dinner, although it is quite small, so you might have to take turns with the owners. There are two bathrooms in the kitchen/bathroom cabin, so one has been designated as the quest bathroom and the other is used by the owners. We are not opposed to letting children sleep on the floor. As a mother of four, I have done that in hotel rooms many times. There is no extra fee for children.

Online maps has been updated and will take you almost to our driveway. Go just a little bit farther. The driveway should match the picture with a rock wall on both sides of the gate and the Hollow Way sign. The number ending in 16 is on a sign and on the gate. As you enter the main driveway you will make an immediate left and go to the second cabin.

During your stay
We enjoy meeting our guests, but we also are sometimes busy and not at home when you arrive. Don't hesitate to call or text or wander the property looking for me if you have questions.

Other things to note
-There is no glass in the windows so it can get quite chilly in the room at night. There are extra blankets in the window seat.
-This cabin is completely off-grid. The solar panel will run lights and charge devices, but cannot be used all night. (The kitchen/bathroom cabin has enough power to run the refrigerator all night.)
-We do have two bars of cell service.
-Beach chairs and snorkel gear is available by request.
-hammock is also available by request.
-No pets, no smoking.

The space
Comfortable. Light, airy floor through elevated 1,200 SF space with lots of privacy within two blocks of main highway. Located within ten minutes of the ocean, two towns — Pahoa and Keaau — and less than 30 minutes from the volcano. Fifteen minute drive to Hilo. Five minutes to wonderful Sunday Makuu Farmers Market. Two minute drive to convenience store with everything you need.

Other things to note
There is a large refrigerator, dishwasher, stove and ample space in kitchen with bar and stools. Front and rear access. Bedrooms have one queen size bed in each. Smaller middle room can be used as common space such as office.

Take it easy at this unique and tranquil getaway. This simple off-grid cabin is set in the rain forest near Volcanoes National Park. Large screened windows and a screened door let the breeze through and give a great view of the rain forest as well as providing access to bird song and the sounds of the coqui frogs. The metal roof with UV shield keeps the cabin cool when it is sunny and allows for the soothing sound of rain when it is not.

The space
The guest cabin is a stand alone bedroom for privacy. It contains a queen bed with energy cancelling memory foam. The bathroom is down a short walk through the woods in the centrally located kitchen/bathroom cabin. There are breakfast foods available such as pancake mix, oatmeal packets, granola, eggs and instant coffee. The kitchen can also be used for cooking a simple lunch or dinner, although it is quite small, so you might have to take turns with the owners. There are two bathrooms in the kitchen/bathroom cabin, so one has been designated as the quest bathroom and the other is used by the owners. We are not opposed to letting children sleep on the floor. As a mother of four, I have done that in hotel rooms many times. There is no extra fee for children.

Guest access
Online maps like to send you to our neighbors, so PLEASE do not turn in their driveway. Go to the next place on the left. Make sure it matches the picture with a rock wall on both sides of the gate and the Hollow Way sign. The number ending in 16 is on a sign and on the gate. To the left of the main driveway is a sign for cabin 1 parking. Pull far enough off the driveway that others can get past, but not far enough to hit the tree.

During your stay
We enjoy meeting our guests, but we also are sometimes busy and not at home when you arrive. Don't hesitate to call or text or wander the property looking for me if you have questions.

Other things to note
-There is no glass in the windows so it can get quite chilly in the room at night. There are extra blankets in the bottom two drawers of the dresser.
-This cabin is completely off-grid. The solar panel will run lights and charge devices, but cannot be used all night. (The kitchen/bathroom cabin has enough power to run the refrigerator all night.)
-We do have two bars of cell service.
-Beach chairs and snorkel gear is available by request.
-No pets, no smoking.

Our property is located 30 minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Your cabin features a queen size bed, queen size air mattress, a space heater, ceiling fan, and floor fan. Relax & start your day with a complementary cup of coffee or hot tea on your lanai.

You're also welcome to prepare & enjoy meals in our screened communal & well-stocked kitchen, where you'll feel close to nature with lots of space for meal prep & dining.

The space
We hope you will choose to stay with us if you're planning to explore the National Park and enjoy the peace and quiet of a remote location and understand off-grid living.

We get 300 inches of rain a year on average, so you'll be happiest at our place if you enjoy the sound of rain on the roof while you sleep.

While you won't find a tv in your cabin, we do have cards, board games, books, and wifi. We have an incredible view of the Milky Way from our driveway, and are happy to let you stargaze with our telescope, weather permitting.

Amenities include private outdoor restroom with a sink, flushing toilet, and hot shower.

We provide coffee and tea, and occasionally have farm fresh eggs as well (feel free to verify that our chickens are laying before you shop).

Optional add-ons include transportation, on-site laundry, and massage sessions with a Hawaii-licensed therapist.

Our newest add-on: a meal prepared while you adventure. Maximize your time on island and let us cook for you!

* You do NOT need a four wheel drive vehicle to navigate our gravel road.

The purple cabin is your private space.

We will be sharing the kitchen with you, but will always yield to you. Thank you for being mindful of shared use when you are in the kitchen.

Other things to note
Our elevation is 1900 feet. You will want to bring warm clothes - 55⁰ at night is colder than it sounds!

It is VERY HUMID in the rainforest - rain is in the name. You are welcome to refresh your wet towels in the dryer if the sun isn't shining to dry them - please check with us first as we are powered by solar.

Laundry is an add-on. If you would like to do a load during your stay, just let us know. We're happy to switch it over while you are out adventuring.
