Hale Iki is a treasured family home for 3 generations. Tropical sunsets and the wide Pacific Ocean is all yours, right out front, all day long for you to enjoy. Recently remodeled, Hale Iki has a darling new kitchen with black sand granite countertops, ocean seaglass tile backsplash, a farmhouse kitchen with and ocean view, lovely koa wood tile floors throughout and all the appliances you need. The two bedrooms have a queen bed in the master and 2 twins in the other (a memory foam mattress topper can convert the twins to a king bed if needed). Each room has their own private bathroom attached. There's both an indoor & outdoor shower. A stacked washer & dryer is available in the attached laundry room. The little house has a TV, with Netflix/Prime apps, shelves of books to read, snorkels, fins, beach chairs and surfboards, boogie boards to borrow. There's a lava rock BBQ and Weber to grill up fresh fish while the sunsets on the Pacific. The best day is spent relaxing on the lanai in chaise lounges reading a book & bird watching, or take a road trip to see the erupting volcano, it's mildly flowing, but quite exciting. The ocean right out front might be glassy smooth for snorkeling, or if the surf's up just walk 4 houses down to Kahalu'u public beach for sea turtles and surfing. Hale Iki is on a large flat lot surrounded by lawn, a very old banyan tree, a lava rock wall, literally right on the ocean. There are tide pools to explore for shells & crabs. Just 4 miles south from Kona town, (home of the Iron Man Tri-athalon) in October, the marathon runners go past right out front on Ali'i Drive.

Our family likes to rent to happy people who respect the treasure found at Hale Iki. Many months are booked ahead by return renters. It's clean classic Hawaiian style living. The highest honor is to be asked if you're a "local" or Kama'aina when you walk out the gate. There might be lil' green geckos scampering around and rainbows over the horizon, but it is all good luck. This is Kona and you may find an open week or two to enjoy Hale Iki as your home base to explore the Big Island of Hawaii.

Hale Honu is a two-story, two bedroom three bath, plus ground level rumpus & den room , TRULY OCEANFRONT home with extraordinary views of the ocean from all rooms of the home. The house is designed with an upstairs 2 bedroom/2 bath main house (plus a private day bed) , and a large (650 sq feet) rumpus room with full bathroom and wet bar on the ground level with a separate entrance. This is a lengthy detailed description of Hale Honu… there are several unique features of this house worth learning about! You might read in some older reviews about the ground level space being rented separately. That is no longer an option. Your booking is for the entire property with no other guests present.

The entire house has undergone a major remodel, including all new windows, bedrooms and baths, kitchen, and exterior. The main living area of Hale Honu ('the upstairs house') is on the second level, and offers two large bedrooms (with really comfortable king beds and down pillows), plus an alcove with a full bed. Upstairs are two full baths, and a sunny, open kitchen and living area, with a fully retractable glass wall that opens onto our 450 sq. ft. lanai, making the kitchen, living/dining room and oceanfront lanai one contiguous open air space. The kitchen is a gourmet's delight with a 2022 new induction range and oven, stainless steel appliances with a new 4 door GE Profile french door refrigerator, tons of cabinets, a huge kitchen island with power supply, pantry, and reverse osmosis water purification system (no more plastic water bottles!), plenty of workspace and everything a serious cook wants. We get a lot of comments from guests who tell us the kitchen is the best equipped of any vacation rental they have previously rented. Provided for you is a blender, toaster, whaffle iron, griddle, Kitchen Aid electric stand mixer, hand mixer, rice maker and food processor. And of course, a drip coffee maker and basic espressor maker. The 180 degree views of the Kona coastline are breathtaking from every window. You may never want to leave this spot!

Upstairs, the two large bedrooms upstairs each boast a 4 X 10 foot retractable Nana window that completely opens to the ocean below. It's like being on the bow of an ocean liner, with the waves breaking literally a stone’s throw away. The master bath has a soaking bathtub and a custom Mango wood vanity and vessel sink with a private WC. The second bathroom upstairs is entered from the hall, and has a large walk-in travertine tiled shower and new fixtures.

The alcove room upstairs is a perfect place for an afternoon nap on pune'e full sized bed. It's cozy, though with the three large jalousie (louvered glass panes) windows overlooking Pahoehoe Beach Park and the ocean encompass almost all of one wall, plus another window at the head of the bed, this room seems roomier and is filled with the sound and breeze of the ocean.

The upper lanai is 450 square feet of travertine tiled, partially covered open air space with cable railings that are almost invisible and gives you unobstructed views of turtle cove, with its reef fishes and Honu (sea turtle) directly below, as well as 180 degrees out to 2500 miles of unbroken Pacific Ocean. Flood lights can be operated from upstairs or from the studio on the ground level, and create a dramatic scene of the surf at night. There are six chairs for the 52" round glass table, and an outdoor sectional that will easily sit six.

On the garden/ground level is the large rumpus room with a king sized murphy bed, full bath and a wet bar with refrigerator. This space has a separate, secured entrance, outdoor garden, with dining and relaxing areas. The bathroom has luxurious marble tile and glass block, and a walk in shower for two with dual shower heads. Windows and sliders encompass all of the makai (ocean side) walls, so you can simply let the ocean air in, or step out and be right at the ocean’s edge. There is a free standing AC unit in this room.

This gated property is surrounded by a beautiful lava rock wall and borders Pahoehoe Beach Park (an oceanfront beach park with shaded sitting areas, grass and a small keiki (child) friendly beach). A two minute walk takes you to MAGIC SANDS BEACH, the best white sand beach in Kailua-Kona, and renown for body surfing & boogie boarding. It’s a kid friendly beach too, with a gentle slope, and sugar white sand. Magic Sands Beach is also known as Disappearing Sands Beach…. It gets this name because winter swells can make much of this beach disappear and limit access for swimming.

Hale Honu is located just three miles south of Kailua-Kona village, and two miles north of the Keauhou shopping and cinema complex. Here you are close enough to everything but still in a world of your own!

The grounds of the property are nicely landscaped and totally private, enclosed within 6 foot lava stone walls. We have 6 padded chase lounges in addition to 3 sets of outdoor tables and chairs, love seats, and two outdoor futons. You can bask in the sun just meters from the waves or wile away the hours swaying in our oceanside hammock for two.

When the sea is calm, there is excellent snorkeling at the abundant reef and arches directly in front of the house. We enter the ocean right off the property, but this requires a climb down the sea wall, and is for people comfortable with a rock entry into the ocean. You can also easily enter the ocean from the always sheltered small beach at Pahoehoe Beach Park adjacent to Hale Honu. We swim with Honu (turtles) almost every time! A large lava shelf has excellent tidal pools for exploring at low tide.

Throughout the home there are open beam cathedral ceilings and nearly floor to ceiling windows making the home light and airy, with full ocean views everywhere. The sound and energy of the ocean is present in every room. Decorated with travertine tile and bamboo flooring, Balinese antiques, island art, as well as elegant tropical furnishings, you will feel like ali'i (royalty) in this home.

Hale Honu has a second covered lanai on the ground level, where you can spend your evenings in the Kama'aina (Local way ...barbequing and talking story. This 400+ square foot outdoor lanai is filled with the sound of waves, trade winds, and Hawaiian ambience.

Hale Honu would be a PERFECT SITE FOR A FAMILY EVENT (reunion, celebration). The beautiful outdoor areas will accommodate a larger party, with room for outdoor cooking/reception areas, seating, and spectacular ocean views.

- "Our family stayed at this vacation rental for 5 lovely nights in April, our last stay after several weeks on the Big Island. On our arrival at the Turtle House, we felt as though we had saved the best for last. The value here is in its location, private yet with access next door to a public beach, and comfort, the owners have thought of everything to maximize your enjoyment. The new accordion windows in the bedrooms are fabulous, allowing you to sleep as though you are out on the ocean. The kitchen is spacious, extremely well equipped, and there is a gas barbecue (not charcoal!). There are plenty of comfortable conversation / viewing areas on the property, and you can easily move from one to the next as your mood allows. All the rooms are screened (not all vacation homes are - we found out!) for bugs, a necessity in the evening. Parking is secure, bathrooms updated and spacious, and the beds are comfortable. The little extras in the home such as the stereo with numerous Hawaiian music CDs illistrate the care put into this property. I am reluctant to recommend vacation properties without a disclaimer as every family is unique in thier needs and preferences, but I can recommend this property without reserve - you and your family will be happy here. The only complaint I have is we were so comfortable, it took a great deal of effort to mobilize ourselves for any day trips! Don't miss the night dive/ snorkel trip with the Manta Rays - magical! Finally, the cleaning lady was cheerful and helpful, both on our arrival and departure. "

Unit 1

Our DIRECT OCEANFRONT corner unit (#1) has its own beach only 27 steps away from the lanai (patio). This end unit (no one below you or above you) has added privacy including a quiet grassy area. Experience sunsets year round and let the sound of the waves relax you. From the lanai, the seaside bedroom, and even the upstairs shower, enjoy watching green turtles grazing on the rocks, the spinner dolphins leaping (typically mornings), and the humpback whales breaching or tail-slapping offshore (during the winter birthing/mating season).

We are directly on a salt & pepper beach. At the far north end, lots of tide pools with critters & petroglyphs. At the closer south end, at high tide if the waves are calm, then experienced & fit snorkelers (with a buddy, never alone!) can find a variety of sea life. However, if a novice and/or the seas are rougher, then the Kahaluu state beach (just ~ 5 to 10 minute walk north of our bay) is full of sea life and a safer location (with protective ancient seawall & lifeguards).

Both bedrooms have Cal King beds. The living room has a sofa and love seat, 42” HDTV, DVD/BluRay player, & audio system (with plug & USB ports). Free high-speed WiFi & telephone (Free Calling Within U.S Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guam & The Virgin Islands.) Fully equipped kitchen for simple or elegant meals alike. This lovely, spacious condo at Kahalu'u Beach (Turtle Beach) has Ocean and Sunset views, and is the perfect escape for guests wanting easy access to swimming, snorkeling, surfing, paddle boarding and golfing. Ours is an unit on the ground floor in the back with views of the ocean and coastline (no stairs and away from street noise).

Our complex, the Beach Villas, is the newest development in Kailua-Kona and offers off-street parking, an infinity pool overlooking the ocean, a cozy lava rock spa, a gas barbecue and a large picnic area with tables, chairs and lounge chairs for family gatherings. The Keikei area of the Infinity Pool is great for kids to play in or simply for all to sit and sunbathe in the shallow water.

Kahalu'u Beach Park across the street is well protected by sea walls, and provides for gentle swimming and a tide pool for kids. Sea turtles and colorful fish of various species are so plentiful making this spot the snorkeling paradise in the Big Island. Immediately to the north past the swimming/snorkeling are the rolling surfs where surf boards may be rented. Guests may use the boogie boards stocked in our unit, saving the trouble of renting boards. Cooler, umbrella, beach towels, beach chairs, snorkel gears and sand toys are all available to guests without extra charges. However, to assure better fits, guests may bring their own gears.

Golfing in the Kona Country Club is only 1/2 mile down the road. Its 4 star Ocean Course offers a spectacular setting of lush, wide fairways, and the sparkling Pacific at one's feet. Its 4-1/2 star Mountain Course overlooking the ocean offers a more challenging terrain with Ancient Hawaiian rock slides running through the center. Its Vista Restaurant has a spectacular view and serves customers breakfast and lunch.

Shopping and restaurants (including the famous Sam Choy's Kai Lanai) are all within a short walking distance, making our condo a comfortable home away from home for guests.

Our condo also offers a full cooking kitchen. Costco is a convenient stop on the way from the airport where guests may stock up for groceries.

It was just a nice little touch. All the extra towel racks were so convenient for drying gear. The only thing I would add is a couple more chairs for the outdoor table. The team at Kahalu'u Bay Surf and Sea will have you out and in the water with the best local knowledge of the bay.

When you're not on an ocean adventure or exploring all the Big Island has to offer, relax on one of 3 lanais, all offering an ocean view. The main lanai is equipped with a custom cooler bar, making access to your favorite beverage effortless. Grill up local caught fish on the Webber propane grill, and enjoy your meals on the outdoor table for 6. Watch every sunset of your vacation from your private lanai, or walk across the street and put your toes in the water and okole (bum) in the sand.

Once you've exhausted yourself and are ready to wind down, enjoy the temperature controlled rooms and amenities offered to make your vacation easy going.

Upstairs is a loft style bedroom with a queen sized futon bed, dresser and 36" smart TV. It also has its own 1/2 bath, 2 private lanais and Daikin minisplit AC unit.

If additional places are needed to sleep, the living room couch pulls out into a queen size bed. The living room also has a large Daikin minisplit AC unit to help keep you cool and comfy!

The Keauhou shopping center is a quick 5 minute drive south and contains a local grocery store, gas station, restaurants and shops. Just 5 minutes south of the Keauhou shopping center is Keauhou Bay. Popular activities offered at Keauhou are kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, snorkel cruises to the famous Kealakekua Bay and nightly manta ray tours. Keauhou also offers a 18 hole golf course and driving range at the Kona County club.

Drive 4 miles north or ride the free trolley along Ali'i drive and spend time shopping and dining in Kailua-Kona. Check out historical sights like, Huliee palace, the stone church and the residents of King Kamehameha.

FUNCTIONALITY OF THE HOUSE: This is an ideal property for couples or families. There are 2 bedrooms, 2 baths total. The queen-size pull-out couch in living room can also sleep 2 comfortably if needed. We provide snorkel gear, boogie boards, surfboard, and cooler.

TOP FLOOR LIVING AREA: Kitchen/Dining/Living -- All Open Flow -- connecting from the Front Porch straight through to the Rear Deck off the kitchen with a mountain view. The kitchen features granite counters and new electric induction stove, oven and microwave. The living room includes a 50" flat screen TV and comfortable couch. The flat screen TVs in the living room has Chromecast and connects to high-speed internet (300MBS) for various streaming options. Master and Guest Suites are also on this level.

MASTER SUITE: offers an incredibly comfortable Cal King, small built-in office desk w/ wifi enabled printer, walk-in closet, shower and two sinks. Tall ceilings with overhead fan help give it a pleasant, airy feeling. The master is also equipped with a 35" flat screen TV and Google Chrome for Netflix, etc.

GUEST SUITE: This room is ample size and has a comfortable murphy bed with overhead fans. The guest suite offers its own bathroom with a sink with marble vanity, bathtub and shower. Entry: The gated stairs from the driveway lead up 20 steps to the lanai and main entry doors.

GROUND LEVEL: stairs lead from the main floor down to a private laundry room (Because these stairs are wide and cannot be blocked off, our home may not be suitable for young children. We reserve the right to decline booking requests from guests with children between the ages of 1-5 or guests with fewer than 4 star reviews; please inquire for possible exceptions).

MORE DETAILS: High ceilings, fans and open-air cooling provides an eco-sensitive alternative to traditional AC (No Central Air... but a cross-breeze typically keeps the house a comfortable temp!). To air the house: 1. Turn on all the fans, 2. open all the sliding doors (and/or screens), and windows, 3. Open the balcony door to the kitchen to create a nice cross breeze (we typically leave all the doors open with the screens closed). 4. In addition, each room has a portable tower fan that can be positioned as needed.

Ditch your car keys and skip the parking hassles, traffic and noise of downtown -- you can easily walk/bike anywhere from here. Bike Share bikes are available right across the street from the beach at Magic Sands (The Hele-on-bus also stops at Magic Sands. Rideshare apps are under $10 for such a short distance.

We are walking distance to the beach and two blocks away from the Ironman course, but also have easy access to the upper highway when Ali'i Drive is busy.

Please Note: The home is situated in a neighborhood with working families, dogs, leaf blowers and other noises commonly associated with residential areas. This listing is for the main living area on the second floor only. At this time, guests do not have access to the garage or downstairs areas of the house. We have 4-night minimum stays on all weekends & holidays; unless there are not 4 consecutive nights available on the calendar... then we will book a 3 night minimum. - "The property exceeded our every expectation. Perfect for our family of 5 including 3 young adult daughters. We were warmly welcomed by our hosts and enjoyed having this as our home base for a 10-day stay. Located in a quiet and safe neighborhood, the house is stocked with indoor features and outdoor amenities including beach/snorkeling gear and various surf/body boards. The outsized lanai spans the entire width of the house but allows privacy if desired. We cooked several meals in the kitchen and made good use of the gas grill, which is conveniently located on a small balcony adjacent to the kitchen. A large shopping plaza with a grocery store is a 5-minute drive away. This house is the real deal and gets our top recommendation. We'd love to stay here again!"

You will love having coffee in the morning in your Private Ocean-View Courtyard or a glass of wine in the evening while watching the beautiful sunsets! We do have pets (a very friendly and quiet Great Dane and 4 cats), but they have no access to the Ohana suite.

My husband and I are always available and happy to recommend restaurants, the best "Happy Hour" locations, and other things to see and do. It will be our pleasure to provide almost anything that will help you make the most of your Hawaii vacation!

My house is located about 5 miles south of Kailua town. It's two blocks away from White Sands Beach & a mile from Kahalu'u Beach. The kitchen, living room, dining room , are in the center of house and each bedroom suites are on opposite sides of shared spaces. I have solar , AC , surfboards, and other water toys ... I have three pets two dogs and 2 year old female Indian ringneck bird . She is very loud in the morning. I suggest you bring the noise canceling headphones…

I am pretty flexible and tend to spend a lot of my time at my home when not working. The floor plan works amazing for an Airbnb because the master and guest quarters are on either sides of the shared living space , kitchen, dining room and den , Complete privacy for all when needed . Considering Hawaii is a tropical environment, please shower daily. I’ve had a few guests whose hygiene practices were below par, or had a very pungent body odor from not showering daily!

Very special oceanfront Cottage

The space
Located right on the water, Makana Kai, gift of the sea, has been family-owned for more than 40 years and retains the feeling of visiting a beloved and well-furnished home. The house has been renovated with a new kitchen, appliances, beds, fans, furnishings, and a rebuilt Ipe lanai. The beauty of this house is its spectacular location at the edge where the pacific ocean meets the Kona coast. Guests love the views from the deck: sunrises, ocean tides, dolphin spinning, whales in winter, golden sunsets, the moon over the water and stargazing at night.

The house has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and is best suited for two couples or a family with 2-3 children. The primary bedroom has a king sized bed. The guest bedroom has a Japanese-style shoji screen doors that sections off the room to provide privacy of a separate sleeping area in the room. The sleeping arrangement would be one queen bed and one double bed. You have the option to open up into one larger room or close to two smaller sleeping spaces. The The house stays cool through the open louvered windows and daily ocean breeze. Some amenities in addition to a full kitchen include a barbecue and washer/dryer. There is beach gear for your use: cooler, boogie boards, beach chairs, mats and umbrella.

A short walk north from the house is Magic Sands - a white sand beach - and Mile 4 Marker Cove. Less than a mile south is Kahalu’u known for its calm waters, snorkeling inside the breakwater and surfing/stand-up-paddle-boarding at the point. The nearby Keauhou Shopping Center has a market, bakery and coffee shop, restaurants, a book store, shops and a movie theater and also hosts a Farmer's Market on Saturdays.

In the town of Kailua (4 miles north) are restaurants, shops, and historic sites including the Hulihe’e Palace of Queen Kapiolani and Kamakahonu Bay, a home for King Kamehameha in his later years.

Most activities along the Kona Coast are within a few miles of the house: swimming, snorkeling, golf, hiking, biking, deep sea fishing and diving and exploring the art galleries of Holualoa. You can also enjoy drives around the island to the beaches and hotels of the
northern Kohala coast, see the spectacular Waipi’o Valley, explore beautiful waterfalls and rainforests, visit the old Hawaii of Hilo and journey to the Volcano National Park to see the active volcano Kilauea.
