- "T Vs did not work. VERY complicated controls " - "Shoulder season gives the best rates" - "We stayed in 101, which was quite a walk from the front desk. The walk is definately worth it. Our balcony was right outside our bedroom, and also right off the living room. It's far enough away from the pool that it's not a distraction from the view. Also a perfect spot to catch the sunset on the ocean between the palm trees. We slept with the balcony door open (screen closed, there were a few mosquitos) so we could hear the ocean as we fell asleep. Our first morning, we had our coffee on the balcony and saw dolphin playing. My wife saw wales. I would recommend bringing a good pair of binoculars so you can see them. The condo was spacious enough for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Full kitchen, 2 bedroom with 2 bathrooms, AND a washer/dryer in the unit. Housekeeping and other staff were very attentive and helpful, which definately makes for a better experience. There was no construction going on during our stay (late March, early April 2010), and it didn't appear that there were any future plans of it at the time either. In room internet was available for $40 a week, and cable TV kept the kids busy during the downtime. Garage parking was nice. CONS: There's always some bad, but the good far outweighs the bad here. The main bedroom is separated from the living room by 3 slatted sliding doors which gave little privacy. The trash recepticle area was a bit of a walk from our unit, but that's also a PRO, depending on how you look at it. Finding the place is a little difficult at night. We almost drove past it our first time, but it was dark. The carpet needs to be either cleaned or replaced."

Also, the roads leading to the hotel is very dark in the night. It is safe property with gate & security. Staff members in the property were very nice & relaxed. You want to make sure that this is a residential place, so you want to respect your neighbors as you are at home. Cozy lower level Ohana apartment, with ocean view, in our home on our 4 acre family farm in the Ohia cloud forest of Kaloko Mauka. We are located at 2,000 feet up enjoying cooler weather and a unique microclimate just above Kona. We are a 10 minute drive to the nearest beach, 8 minutes to Costco and restaurants, and 15-20 minutes to Kona town. It is a private one bed, one bath with its own separate entrance and parking. It has a kitchenette with full fridge/freezer, and a mini washer and dryer.

The space
The Ohana has one bedroom, 1 full bathroom, a kitchenette with full-sized fridge/freezer, 2 burner electric hot plate, toaster oven, and microwave, and living room with a fold down futon couch. We have a pack-n-play available upon request. Dining is alfresco on your own covered lanai with ocean view and beautiful sunsets. There are a mini washer and dryer out on the lanai. There is also a gas grill on the lanai. The gated property is on four acres with beautiful trees and plants. It is in a cloud forest so most afternoons we get some rain. We have goats, cats, a small dog, chickens, and ducks on the property as well as beautiful native pheasants, parrots and wild birds.

We are a family of four with two children. Sometimes our kids laugh, sometimes they cry, sometimes they play, sometimes they bicker, sometimes they run and jump. You will likely hear them and our upstairs foot traffic and noise periodically, but we try to be as quiet as possible. We are also musicians with an indoor music space on the property. Please contact me ahead of booking if you have any questions or concerns about this.

The futon couch in the living room is 71” long and 42” wide when converted down for a bed for guests that choose to sleep on it. We now have a new one, that is different than the photo, and has memory foam filling.

We live at a cooler elevation and nighttime temperatures can drop, especially in the winter. You may want warmer clothing for the evenings.

There are coqui frogs that chirp at night. It does not bother us and we consider it pleasant white noise. But if you feel you will be sensitive to this, please bring earplugs.

Hawaii Island is wild and tropical. Some summer days can become quite humid but the late afternoon breeze cools it down. Expect geckos (little lizards) and the occasional bug to be in and around the home. We try our best to keep these critters away but it is impossible to not have any. Stay tidy and don’t leave open food and crumbs out please. The cats never go inside the ohana but they are friendly so may come up to you outside or on your lanai during your stay. Please keep this in mind if you are allergic to, or uncomfortable with cats.

Also this is an older, unique and beautiful home, made of recycled cedar wood, in a damp tropical environment without central air conditioning or heat. It was actually built by a well known architect here and even featured in a Hawaii style magazine at one point. However, If you prefer modern construction with clean lines, no quirks, and not having a sense of bringing the outside in, then you may not feel comfortable here. It is an open air concept home (like most in Hawaii) so you will feel all of the outdoor temperatures/humidity and smell all of the plants and flower blooms in the air, which we love! The ohana does have a ceiling fan and dehumidifier in the bedroom for use if needed.

GET and TAT taxes are required by Hawaii for vacation rentals . In addition, the property taxes have now increased significantly for homes hosting vacation rentals. Hawaii is greatly trying to discourage vacation rentals, unfortunately, but we would still like to provide one for travelers that do not like to stay in pricy resorts/condos. We have tried to offset this cost by giving guests discounts for longer stays and a lower cleaning fee. These taxes will be calculated into your final rate that you pay via air bnb (the "management fee " are the taxes). You will see them included when you book. Nothing is added on afterwards.

You will be staying in an ohana (apartment) in our family home that we live in. You will likely see and hear us during your stay.
