Welcome to The Loft on Colby!

Located in the heart of historic Whitehall, The Loft on Colby was originally constructed as a Masonic Temple in 1922 and is home to the first piano delivered to the White Lake area. This piano continues to serve as a focal point to the large living space. The Loft on Colby is one of the original and tallest buildings of this quaint town. This one-of-a-kind property has one bedroom, two and a half baths and an open loft sleeping area (formerly the balcony.) The Loft can easily accommodate up to 8 guests. It is the perfect home-base to enjoy all that the Whitehall/Montague area has to offer.

The Loft is conveniently located to US 31, an hour from Grand Rapids, and 3.5 hour drive from Chicago or Detroit.

Relax with a good book while enjoying the view overlooking White Lake Bayou. Explore beyond to shops, restaurants, walking paths, bike trails, kayak liveries, or to the grassy park just steps away on White Lake. A scenic drive to the nearby Duck Lake State Park offers the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan and the warm wading waters beneath the bridge to Duck Lake.

In our well-stocked kitchen, you will find everything you need to prepare and serve meals for 8. If you prefer takeout or delivery, menus from local restaurants are available.

The Loft is stocked with kitchen staples such as table settings, coffee, paper goods, soaps (dishwasher/dish) garbage bags, as well as bedding and bath/beach towels, and travel size toiletries.

We do not host Bachelor/Bachelorette or any other gatherings of that nature.

NOTE: Two security cameras (one outside, facing out--covering balcony, first set of stairs and a portion of the parking lot), located on the 2nd floor of the building. Second security camera located in the vestibule of the storefront.

NOTE: The Loft is located at the top of the tallest building in downtown Whitehall. We don't have an elevator, but you may enter/exit from either the Colby Street front or back parking lot doors. Please note: Outside back parking lot stairs, to The Loft, are narrow and open to the elements. If carrying multiple pieces of luggage, or you feel more comfortable, please use the front indoor stairs.

Interior/exterior staircases require effort and maybe challenging for some.

NOTE: As stated above, The Loft is located in downtown Whitehall on Colby St. which is the main street of town. We offer sound machines; ear plugs and box fans (located in the hallway closet) for traffic noise in the front "downtown view" bedroom.

NOTE: The front "downtown view" bedroom has two king beds that are divided by a curtain and the Loft King bed sleeping space (with additional sofa sleeper) is open and airy overlooking the grand living quarters.

The space
Spacious home with lots of beds and plenty of indoor amenities and entertainment!

Dock is in the water from Memorial Day through Labor Day. When lower level lake access is open (seasonal, depending on weather -- open approximately from April through October), guests can enjoy use of 4 kayaks, 2 paddleboards, and a paddleboat. Some lifejackets available. Guests are encouraged to bring their own to ensure correct fit.

IMPORTANT: Home is equipped with an indoor and outdoor decibel-monitoring system to ensure compliance with noise requirements. Guests who book this property agree to the rules and the security deposit includes $500 for noise, which won't be charged if rules are followed and the neighborhood is respected. Thank you!!

13 reasons this might NOT be the right vacation home for you. PLEASE READ before booking.

1. You're looking for a party house. . . or your group is rowdy and won't be able to respect our neighbors. This is a quiet setting (equipped with a decibel-monitoring system to ensure compliance!), as we love our neighbors and the peace of the area. For guests to stay here, it's important they agree to help maintain the peace of the area. NO MUSIC OUTSIDE the home, and no disruptive or loud noise (shouting, singing, partying, etc.) at any time of the day. Any music inside the house MUST NOT be audible outside the house. Each booking is subject to a $500 noise deposit, refundable if noise rules and neighbors are respected.

2. Your group won't be able to respect property lines. ABSOLUTELY NO TRESPASSING outside the property onto our neighbor's properties.

3. The sixth bedroom and bathroom are in the basement. There's an egress window and quite a bit of natural light; however, no lake views. (Most other rooms do have lake views!)

4. In the summer, the ground by the lake can become a bit soggy. This occurs for a variety of reasons, but we can't control it unfortunately.

5. Due to the on-demand hot water heater, occasional variation in water temperatures during showers can occur.

6. Steps to the lake and seasonal lake access closures. Approximately 50 steps down to the water. Additionally, due to safety concerns, the lower level lake access is closed from approximately November-March.

7. Swimming requires use of a ladder off the dock--no ability to walk into the water.

8. The upstairs rooms share one small full bathroom (for room with Cali King and crib, room with two queens and two singles, common space with two queens). The bathroom is off the common space. Main floor has two full bathrooms, which is a bit disproportionate to the distribution of beds.

9. No garage.

10. Narrow (but long) lot. ABSOLUTELY NO TRESPASSING onto our neighbors' properties!

11. Surrounding area has only a few local restaurants and convenience stores. More restaurants and commercial attractions are nearby in Whitehall, North Muskegon, and Muskegon, but there's a limited offering within 15 minutes.

12. We do not provide firewood, but it is sold locally.

13. Home is not baby-proof.

Sloping front lawn has great views, a fire pit, and a 6' x 18' heated plunge pool. on large deck with gas grill and dining table. Lowest level has modern great room kitchen with gas fireplace, tv, sonos stereo, bedroom with king bed and ensuite bath with walk in shower. Mid level has front door with balcony and great views of lake, 2 bedrooms with ensuite baths - 1 king and 1 queen. Upper level has one bedroom with king bed and large bathroom with both shower and large jacuzzi tub as well as a separate large bunkroom.

On a sandy bluff overlooking the vast inland sea they call LAKE MICHIGAN, sits a special place, tucked in amid the pine and maple: 4951 … the perfect one-bedroom getaway for couples who don’t mind feeling just a little cut off from civilization, who won’t miss leaving behind the sounds of cars, lawnmowers, and leaf blowers … who won’t mind being lulled to sleep by the sound of waves lapping the sand, or breeze stirring the trees: water and wind.

Your beautifully-modernized apartment sits atop an old coachhouse; former outbuilding of a 19th C resort (that no longer exists). Up in your second story aerie, you’ll have an elevated vantage point with plenty of windows facing the water. And every day at 4951, the sun sets in the West, sometimes a ball of flame sinking into the deep blue water at the horizon. Other times not. And you’ll be perfectly situated to witness whatever shapes and colors that day’s sunset takes, whether inside, looking out through the windows, or out on your capacious elevated wooden deck where you’ll be spending lots of time. Here, high amid the waving branches in a green canopy, you’ll be tempted to observe, “We live in a tree house!”

Inside the airy studio apartment, there’s a definitive “Oh wow!” factor at work. One, open vaulted room houses a luxurious king-size bed, dressing area, a modern kitchen with dining area with full lake view. Cozy.

The edge of the bluff is not even 100 feet away. Have a seat there, and survey this promontory where the water meets the land. The Lake has many moods, It can be calm and hypnotizing. It can be a baleful and frightening swirl of big waves and white water. Every day is different, and you learn to enjoy every kind of weather. Should you choose to get closer to (or in) the water, Duck Lake State Park is a half mile to the south on Scenic Dr (a right out of the driveway), and has an impressive expanse of sandy beach, along with miles of woodland trails, a beautiful inland waterway (Duck L) connected by a shallow, sandy channel to the big water, and some great sand dunes to stomp around on.

This place where the waters meet, and the dunes pile so high, has been a landmark that attracted tribes (Ottawa / Ojibwa / Potawatomi) for many centuries. In their birchbark canoes they’d come, to gather, and trade. The first anglo explorers, fur traders, and settlers, also found this to be a natural spot to congregate. (There’s a settler’s boneyard behind one of the big dunes, in the forest.) Head in the other direction a couple miles, and you’ll come to “land’s end” at the White Lake pier, with an historic lighthouse that dates back about 140 years, and a big public beach. White Lake is the other major body of water that identifies the area, connected to the big lake via a channel. At the far end of White L (about 7 miles east) sits the tidy little burgs of Whitehall and Montague; sister towns astride the meeting of the White River and White Lake. This was a salient point in the harvesting of white pines during the 1880’s. Plenty of mill town history here.

If little road trips to bigger towns are on your check list, Muskegon, an old harbor and shipping town with a big beach, is 15 miles to the south, and Grand Haven (renowned beach destination) is another 10 miles south of that. A 45 minute drive to the north will land you at Silver Lake; location of massive dune formations and great outdoor fun.

- "This is a great location and the apartment was spotless and nicely stocked with all of the necessities. The bed was very comfortable. The owner and caretaker were both very nice and attentive. I would like to point out that there are 16 steps up to the deck and entry, however this was not an issue for us. Duck Lake and Muskegon State Park were both close by and wonderful with nice walking trails. Muskegon State Park, especially, had a fantastic beach area. We were amazed that this area was not overrun with tourists. It was a welcome surprise, especially for July! The view of the lake from the deck is somewhat obstructed. There was one branch in particular that was right in our line of sight. I kept thinking how much nicer the view would be if some of the branches were trimmed back and some of the overgrown bushes in the way were cut down. To completely see the sun go down we had to carry our camping chairs across a somewhat weedy side yard to the edge of the dune. Not a difficult thing but I did find a few ticks on me. It would be wonderful if there was a platform out there to set up on or even if the yard had been mowed. As noted, there is no direct access to the beach there. Cell service was very spotty and there is no TV there which was fine for us. WIFI worked great! Thanks for a lovely visit!"

Enjoy a short drive or a 1.5 mile walk to the channel. There is public beach access there as well as the White River Lighthouse Museum for your entertainment. The White Duck Market is just 1/2 mile away for quick grocery runs, lunch options and ice cream to satisfy your sweet tooth. Just past the White Duck is the Duck Lake State Park with public beach access and plenty of hiking trails to walk through (approx. 1.5 miles from the apartment). Downtown Whitehall and Montague features a great small town atmosphere with boutique shopping and restaurant opportunities. You will have plenty to keep you busy during your stay here.

Walking
We’re within walking distance to White Lake, Goodrich Park, Downtown Whitehall and many fantastic restaurants and shops.

Biking
We are just blocks from the Montague side of the Hart-Montague Bike Trail.

Boating
We do allow, on a first come first serve basis, boat trailers to be parked in our side yard. We are about one mile from the Montague Municipal Boat Launch.

Upfront and Honest:

Some of our units have slanted floors.
Our parking lot is old.
We may be doing light work while you’re around but only in the middle of the day and we do try to keep quiet and out of your way.

- "Check in was very easy, room was clean and bed was comfy. The photos are exactly what you get." - "It was a pleasant experience." - "The room was nice and clean. There was a few spiders and webs in the bathroom and main room. Overall nice place for the value" - "The outside appearance of this property is very off-putting and the explanation of how to use the electronic lock is non-existent but the room itself is clean. It is obviously updated as a DIY but you do get a little more than you pay for on the inside. The bathroom is clean and appliances and furniture are obviously updated. I would highly recommend an update to the windows, at least in the bathroom. Having painted shut 30+ year old windows is inconvenient for those of us who prefer a natural breeze to an air conditioner. The only real deal breaker for me staying here again is the parking lot. Not that it is old, I don't expect pristine concrete in Michigan near a lake, but when returning to my room at night, i expect a place to park. There were guests(?) parked in the lawn and since there are no lines in the parking area, it was just a free for all. Even some crooked cheap spray painted guidance would go a long way to prevent guests from having to park down a residential street and walk in the dark back to their hotel room."

- "We were traveling the west side of Michigan and stayed 2 night here as we wanted to explore some beaches and Michigans Adventure. This was a cute little spot that was close enough for us to do just that. There were many accommodations, plenty of towels, dishes, all the bathroom needs you could need in case you forgot something, beach toys etc. Would definitely consider again if we are in the area."

- "Great location" - "The room is average, wish it had a queen size bed instead of just a full size. It would also be nice to have a small coffee maker in the room. It is in a great area and I really enjoyed sitting outside in the courtyard area with a drink and a beautiful view of White Lake."

Like the Lake Michigan waters, this room is bursting with shades of blue! This 300 sq ft, king room sleeps two. This room boasts a private bathroom with our largest walk-in tile shower, updated white oak plank flooring, new lighting, as well as amenities like a mini fridge, microwave, and Keurig, ensuring a comfortable stay. Accompanied by a cozy corner, that allows for the perfect spot to unwind after a fun day at the lake.

- "My wife and I stayed for one evening while our children attended a scout event at the nearby Owasippe Scout Reservation. This room is comfortable and nicely remodeled. Bathroom and shower were great too. Will defiantly return next time we need a room in the area."
