Wake up to beautiful views of the lake and enjoy your morning coffee on the spacious covered porch. Just a 3minute drive from I-81, this property is on the north side of the lake and very easy to get to. A big plus is shopping and restaurants only a few minutes away.

This property was our primary residence for 17 years. We now live in a home on an adjoining property, so we are close by. The property is at the end of a private drive that is well maintained and is very secluded but sits directly on the lake. We currently have two bedrooms ready to rent with a sleeping loft over the living room. It can sleep 6 people. There are three full bath rooms and a 1/2 bath in the laundry room.

The kitchen is well stocked for cooking and there is an outside grill for cook-outs. The living room dining room and kitchen are an open floor plan along with the upstairs loft. All living spaces have a wonderful view of the lake. There is a wrap around porch that over looks the lake, drive, and the woods around the house. There is also a gazebo with a swing. The top of the boat house and the floating dock come with the rental. There is a cement drive with a basketball backstop and a horse shoe pit.

A handmade one of a kind spiral staircase leads to a sleeping loft which has a full size futon and full bathroom. There is a full size pull-out sofa in the downstairs living area. Each bedroom has a queen sized bed with a private bathroom. There is also, a playpen for your convenience.

Wildlife (deer, lizards, migratory geese) was easy to find as well. Easy kayak rentals that deliver to, and pick up from, the dock. Steve and Laurie were easy to deal with and are right up the road for any questions. About 45 minutes to Va. Tech and to Floyd (little town with local artists’ galleries and great local food)."

- "The house was just a short drive off I-81, easy to find, sparkling clean, beautifully decorated, and had great little touches like providing coffee and s'more fixings and allowing access to the kayaks and canoes. It's in a quiet area on a scenic cove with easy access to the main lake channel. We had a great time there and Dwayne was very communicative. Be aware that there are lots of steps to navigate and cellular service at the house is iffy, but that comes with the territory of vacationing on a mountain lake!"

Though our winter visit didn't allow us to get out on the water, we loved the views over the frozen lake and listening to the ice "sing" as it shifted and cracked. The Do Better Cottage is owned by the New River Historical Society and holds a storied past intricately linked to the story of the area and it’s prominent citizens. The house is thought to have been built in 1849 which is where historical records first indicate someone living on the property. The cottage, locally known as the “Do Better Cottage” may have gotten it’s name during this time. When it was built, it was only a small two room cottage and the name may have been since the couple who built it were to live there until they could “do better” for themselves.

The front of the home will be used for archival purposes as a part of the Wildness Road Museum which is across the street from the home. Additionally, the home will be used for various events associated with the Museum.

The kitchen was great, TV worked well with apps. Be careful not to let the key fall through the porch when accessing the key box. I would definitely stay again!"

The very quiet neighborhood has a private road with little traffic and is conveniently located within 6 minutes of Exit 98 of Interstate 81. The house sits directly on Claytor Lake with a dock for your own private access to the water. Only 30 minutes to Virginia Tech and 20 minutes to Radford University, and less than 15 minutes from Claytor Lake State Park. There are many wineries and breweries throughout the area. The area is great for a summer lake vacation, a fall get-away to enjoy the beautiful fall colors, or a peaceful winter retreat.

All areas of the house, decks, and dock are open for access to guests. The dock is available for use by renters and their guests for sun-bathing and swimming, there is space for renters to dock their own boat.

The dock is just a short walk from the house and can be seen from the deck of the house. You'll just need to walk down the hill to get to it.

This home has direct TV, all directions and remote are labeled for guest use on the entertainment system. The surround sound is all over the home, and outlets are placed for you to use, to turn that off and on in designated areas.
The dock and side of back deck has the ability to use the radio source that is located on the dock, in boathouse closet.
Guests have access to the lower level outdoor closet that has life jackets, and floats.
There is 3 adult ( 1 is a double), and 3 child size kayaks.
There is a charcoal grill in that lower level outdoor closet available.
The main dining room table has a leaf, and is able to accommodate to 12 people.
There is a twin size trundle bed located on the lower level closet (extra sheets can be found for that in closets).
Wine coolers are located in butlers pantry on main level, and lower level kitchenette .
Corn hole boards are located in lower outdoor closet.
There is a fire pit located under the covered gazebo.
There is both a Keurig and regular coffee maker in main kitchen
There are two washer and dryers in the home, both available for guest use. (in mudroom on main level, and behind closet doors at the bottom of stairs on lower level).
There is a key lock box on outdoor post at the gate entrance if you desire to lock the gate. PLEASE put the key back and leave the gate OPEN when leaving.
There is a backup generator that will operate lights, and refrigerators. (it will come on automatically if needed.)
There doors going to outside (except front door) are spider lock doors, that means when you unlock the deadbolt push the handle DOWN to open. (lifting up the handle will trigger locks that come out of the perimeter of the door into doorframe.)

Owners are open to allowing "events" such as a party of 25, and a wedding of up to 50 people. Please reach out in your inquiry if this applies. (the traditional cleaning fee will change based on this inquiry)
