Skyline Crest is a private mountain-top retreat high in the Blue Ridge Mountains west of Charlottesville, Virginia.

Part of a 1,400-acre gated compound bordering the Shenandoah National Park, the property offers supreme privacy in one of the most spectacular natural settings in the Eastern Mountains. Many wildlife species - including deer, bear and turkey - can be spotted in the forests and open fields. An elevation of 3,200 feet ensures cool temperatures and constant breezes throughout the summer.

The views from the striking contemporary house are breathtaking - a 120-mile panorama from the level Piedmont in the east, over the near Blue Ridge and the Shenandoah Valley to the distant Alleghenies, fading far into West Virginia. Watch sunrise and sunset year-round. Five decks, including a spacious rooftop deck, open onto the various daytime vistas - and at night provide for thrilling star-gazing under some of the darkest skies in the Mid-Atlantic.

The house itself (2 bedrooms, 2 full baths) features every modern convenience, including a state-of-the art kitchen, satellite TV and wireless Internet.

Although it feels like a world apart, Skyline Crest is only 40 minutes from Charlottesville and Jefferson's University of Virginia, giving you easy access to all the cultural amenities that a cosmopolitan University community can offer. There are many distinguished vineyards in the vicinity, and wines from the Monticello American Viticultural Area (named for Jefferson's home) are considered among the best produced anywhere in the Eastern United States. Also nearby is Wintergreen, the renowned four-season resort, featuring two award-winning golf courses and some of the best skiing and snowboarding south of New England.

Some additional notes:

1. Skyline Crest is located at the summit of Buck's Elbow Mountain, just above the town of Crozet, VA. We like guests to know that the drive ends with a 5 mile ascent up a gravel road. It's a good road, well maintained and, except in snow or ice, fine for 2-wheel drive, as long as the vehicle has reasonable road clearance. It is, however, curvy and steep in places. In the winter months, because weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, we strongly recommend 4-wheel drive.

2. At the top of the Mountain, there are a number of radio towers. These are behind our house - the closest about 150 yards away - and don't interfere in any way with our views, a 270-degree panorama facing entirely in the other direction. But you do see them as you drive up, and from the parking area at the rear of our property. The setting is very much like that of an oceanfront beach house, with a gorgeous, unobstructed view of the ocean – but perhaps with a radio or water tower behind the house on the other side of the road. In more than 20 years of renting the house (hundreds of parties), we have had only 3 or 4 guests tell us that the towers affected their enjoyment in any way. We believe that the view photos on our web pages and the testimonials from our guests speak for themselves, but if you’d like to have a clearer sense what you see from the back of the house we are glad to send a photo taken from the parking area.

3. Although the house has WiFi and Internet, we cannot allow video streaming (Netflix, YouTube etc.). Our Internet service is through a cellular carrier provider - one of the only options in our remote location - and so we have a fixed data allowance each month. We are on one of their highest-data plans, but, even so, just a few HD streamed movies or extended periods of gaming will consume a portion of an entire month's allowance. Zoom calls are less data-intensive and we do allow a limited number of these per stay, as long as guests clear them with us in advance. For entertainment, we have DirecTV satellite service as well as a Blu-ray player and a selection of DVDs at the house.

4. We have three webcams at the property - two that look out of 2nd floor windows of the detached garage next to the house, and one mounted at the peak of the main house roof. None of these shows any part of the house itself, or the decks. One garage camera looks west over the driveway to the Shenandoah Valley and the Alleghenies; the other faces east and looks over our east pasture back toward Charlottesville. The roof mounted camera looks over our north pasture into the National Park. None of these cameras records. We use them mainly to check weather conditions and occasionally to enjoy the views when we can't be up there ourselves. For anyone with privacy concerns, we're happy to send screenshots showing exactly what each cameras sees.

5. Our additional guest fee is $12 per person per night for parties over 2. This used to be stated clearly in our "Rates and Availability" section, but a recent format change leaves it ambiguous now.

6. During the COVID-19 outbreak, the 6 landowning families on our mountain have agreed to suspend our normal wander-as-you-will policy in respect to each other's land, meaning that, for now, the trails within the 1,400-acre compound (which you may have read about in the reviews) are not accessible to our guests. Guests are still welcome to walk anywhere on our land (43 acres at the very top of the mountain), as well as the entire 1.5 mile length of Buck's Elbow Mtn. Rd between our house and the gate at the compound's entrance, where we border the Shenandoah National Park. From there, another half mile along a fire road leads to the Appalachian Trail and several nearby side trails within the Park. There's a parking area at the head of the fire road, so you can also drive to this point and walk just that last half mile to the Trail.

7. Please note that we do require a 3-night minimum stay for all dates, and a higher minimum for some holiday and peak periods. This is because the remote location of the property makes it impractical to have the house cleaned and prepared for guests on a shorter turnaround schedule.

This bright and cheerful Guesthaus is on the second floor above a large storage space. It has a private entrance, driveway and parking area. Surrounded by birds and wildlife, this spacious 2 bedroom, 1 bath accommodation sits at 3,100 feet and looks down on the mountains and the Skyline Drive with breathtaking 70 mile views!
Each bedroom has a queen size bed and a closet and one has an electric fireplace.
Living room has a 40" Smart TV and Wifi. The TV also picks up over 50 channels including some from DC and Richmond. Kitchenette includes basic kitchen utensils and food preparation appliances. We now have a Full size fridge/freezer in the Guesthaus. NO full STOVE/OVEN but does have a two-burner hot plate frequently used by guests. Outdoor grill and chiminea on private patio. Two decks provide seating to enjoy the beautiful views. Spacious fire circle with ample free firewood.
Two friendly 2 dogs live in the main house property, but they do not have access to the Guesthaus, which is a completely separated space from the main home.
One dog is allowed for an additional fee of $50 per stay. NO children are allowed. NOTE - during the winter months all-wheel drive vehicles are required. Property owner is NOT able to help move vehicles stuck in ice or snow on the mountain. Renters should monitor weather conditions closely. Property owner will try to be flexible with cancellation policy January through March.

Spacious remodeled 1906 traditional farmhouse on a fenced acre of private sanctuary located a short walk from downtown Crozet (galleries, restaurants, coffee shops, yoga). A short drive to hiking, orchards, vineyards, and breweries. 20 mins to Charlottesville (UVA Hospital, Monticello.) Max 3 pairs of people and an additional child. We offer our home to groups that can use the layout we have: a King, a Queen, and either the floor futon in the boys room or the pullout sofa double in the study, plus any pack-and-play you need for infants. - "My spouse, my puppy, and I visited Virginia for a hiking weekend in Shenandoah National Park. The cottage house is exactly how it looks in the pictures. Everything was clean, showers water pressure was great and the AC was perfectly chill for the hot summer months. There are great views of the mountains from a short walk down the residential street. I would recommend for anyone wanting to relax after a long hike. A few areas for improvement: The vacuum provided was not prepared for a dog that sheds as much as ours; the refrigerator still had food left over from a previous tenant; the house was listed as a different address than what we were given in arrival instructions so it should be updated; the parking was confusing for this reason, it would be great to have lot lines to dictate where to park. I would recommend this place to all staying in the area - it’s a show stopper."

- "Great communication w manager, super clean and comfortable. Our family rented 3 of the 4 units on this floor for a family wedding held nearby and we all found it very comfortable. In fact, we found the beds so comfortable we clamored to purchase the mattresses (I love mine!). Close to a breakfast restaurant (terrible service there!) and a cute coffee shop. I recommend this place wholeheartedly. I would book again if I wanted to visit for hiking in the Shenandoahs of had another reason to be in the area (looking at you UVA visitors!). The space

My Dad's dream was Historic Catterton House. He moved it to Ruxton Farm and restored it. All rooms are original and very large along with 2 added upper and lower decks. The house is split into 2 private sections so only half of the house is part of the Airbnb. Everywhere you look, you are surrounded by gorgeous views - the orange and red colors of the sunset and sunrise will astound you! Horses and dogs can have their own space so please enjoy with your pets! Additional fees for your horse. There is an outside grilling/kitchen area complete with a dining table. Cornhole boards are available for loads of fun in the frontyard and two tables along with a fire pit in the circle just inside the woods for an evening after dinner drink! The Airbnb is 2 large bedrooms, nice size bathroom, livingroom, 2 TVs, 2 large decks and outdoor grilling area complete with dining table, refrigerator, counter space, plates, utensils. outdoor cuisinart sink and glassware. There is not an indoor kitchen.
Other things to note
The house is filled with beautiful antiques that have been collected and handed down over the years. The chimneys, windows, floors and walls are all 1826 originals.

Getting Around:
Use your personal vehicle to get around the mountain. Parking at property can accommodate up to 4 cars.

Other Things to Note:
-We like guests to know that the drive ends with a 3 mile ascent up a gravel road. While it is a well maintained road, we require 4-wheel drive in the winter months as the weather on the mountain can be unpredictable. 2-wheel drive vehicle can work in non-winter months as long as it has reasonable road clearance. Please keep in mind that the road is windy and steep in certain areas.

-This Cabin is on top of a mountain and surrounded by a variety of wildlife as it is very close to Shenandoah National Park. During certain times of the year, the area will have lady bugs and stink bugs.

The views are incredible. Everything we needed was provided which is really nice. There are nice dishes and even lunch (plastic) dishes. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything we only had to buy our groceries. The host was very responsive with any questions. There are a few ways up the mountain as mentioned we enjoyed them all. We have a Audi Q5 all wheel drive did fine. My son came up in his car and took the easier route and was fine. We loved everything about this stay and house. Internet is STRONG as well which my husband loved as he did have to work a day or two and had no issues."

My daughter and I shared the studio apt for a quick mom/daughter weekend. I am guessing we may of been the first or first of few to stay here. Whole area seemed re-done and new. Maybe extra blankets and pillows would be an added benefit but all the minimal extras were nice. VERY CUTE Fridge and Microwave....I'm a sucker for retro items."
